Sparsity of Integral Points on Moduli Spaces of Varieties

Let $X$ be a quasi-projective variety over a number field, admitting (after passage to $\mathbb{C}$) a geometric variation of Hodge structure whose period mapping has zero-dimensional fibers. Then the integral points of $X$ are sparse: the number of such points of height $\leq B$ grows slower than any positive power of $B$. For example, homogeneous integral polynomials in a fixed number of variables and degree, with discriminant divisible only by a fixed set of primes, are sparse when considered up to integral linear substitutions.

The derived Hecke algebra for dihedral weight one forms

We study the action of the derived Hecke algebra in the setting of dihedral weight one forms, and prove a conjecture of the second- and fourth- named authors relating this action to certain Stark units associated to the symmetric square L-function. The proof exploits the theta correspondence between various Hecke modules as well as ideas of Merel and Lecouturier on higher Eisenstein elements.

Derived Hecke algebra and cohomology of arithmetic groups

We describe a graded extension of the usual Hecke algebra: it acts in a graded fashion on the cohomology of an arithmetic group $Γ$. Under favorable conditions, the cohomology is freely generated in a single degree over this graded Hecke algebra. From this construction we extract an action of certain $p$-adic Galois cohomology groups on $H^*(Γ, \mathbb{Q}_p)$, and formulate the central conjecture: the motivic $\mathbb{Q}$-lattice inside these Galois cohomology groups preserves $H^*(Γ,\mathbb{Q})$.

Entropy bounds and quantum unique ergodicity for Hecke eigenfunctions on division algebras

We prove the arithmetic quantum unique ergodicity (AQUE) conjecture for non-degenerate sequences of Hecke eigenfunctions on quotients $Γ\backslash G/K$, where $G\simeq\mathrm{PGL}_{d}(\mathbb{R})$, $K$ is a maximal compact subgroup of $G$ and $Γ<G$ is a lattice associated to a division algebra over $\mathbb{Q}$ of prime degree $d$. More generally, we introduce a new method of proving positive entropy of quantum limits, which applies to higher-rank groups. The result on AQUE is obtained by combining this with a measure-rigidity theorem due to Einsiedler-Katok, following a strategy first pioneered by Lindenstrauss

The behavior of random reduced bases

We prove that the number of Siegel-reduced bases for a randomly chosen $n$-dimensional lattice becomes, for $n \rightarrow \infty$, tightly concentrated around its mean. We also show that most reduced bases behave as in the worst-case analysis of lattice reduction. Comparing with experiment, these results suggest that most reduced bases will, in fact, "very rarely" occur as an output of lattice reduction. The concentration result is based on an analysis of the spectral theory of Eisenstein series and uses (probably in a removable way) the Riemann hypothesis.

Homological stability for Hurwitz spaces and the Cohen-Lenstra conjecture over function fields

We prove a homological stabilization theorem for Hurwitz spaces: moduli spaces of branched covers of the complex projective line. This has the following arithmetic consequence: let l>2 be prime and A a finite abelian l-group. Then there exists Q = Q(A) such that, for q greater than Q and not congruent to 1 modulo l, a positive fraction of quadratic extensions of F_q(t) have the l-part of their class group isomorphic to A.

Hurwitz Monodromy and Full Number Fields

We give conditions for the monodromy group of a Hurwitz space over the configuration space of branch points to be the full alternating or symmetric group on the degree. Specializing the resulting coverings suggests the existence of many number fields with full Galois group and surprisingly little ramification --- for example, the existence of infinitely many such number fields unramified away from {2,3,5}.

Homological stability for Hurwitz spaces and the Cohen-Lenstra conjecture over function fields, II

We prove a version of the Cohen--Lenstra conjecture over function fields (completing the results of our prior paper). This is deduced from two more general theorems, one topological, one arithmetic: We compute the direct limit of homology, over puncture-stabilization, of spaces of maps from a punctured manifold to a fixed target; and we compute the Galois action on the set of stable components of Hurwitz schemes.

The distribution of closed geodesics on the modular surface, and Duke's theorem

We give an ergodic theoretic proof of a theorem of Duke about equidistribution of closed geodesics on the modular surface. The proof is closely related to the work of Yu. Linnik and B. Skubenko, who in particular proved this equidistribution under an additional congruence assumption on the discriminant. We give a more conceptual treatment using entropy theory, and show how to use positivity of the discriminant as a substitute for Linnik's congruence condition.

Distribution of periodic torus orbits and Duke's theorem for cubic fields

We study periodic torus orbits on spaces of lattices. Using the action of the group of adelic points of the underlying tori, we define a natural equivalence relation on these orbits, and show that the equivalence classes become uniformly distributed. This is a cubic analogue of Duke's theorem about the distribution of closed geodesics on the modular surface: suitably interpreted, the ideal classes of a cubic totally real field are equidistributed in the modular 5-fold SL_3(Z)\SL_3(R)/SO_3(R). In particular, this proves (a stronger form of) the folklore conjecture that the collection of maximal compact flats in SL_3(Z)\SL_3(R)/SO_3(R) of volume less than V becomes equidistributed as V goes to infinity. The proof combines subconvexity estimates, measure classification, and local harmonic analysis.

Linnik's ergodic method and the distribution of integer points on spheres

We discuss Linnik's work on the distribution of integral solutions to $x^2+y^2+z^2 =d$, as $d$ goes to infinity. We give an exposition of Linnik's ergodic method; indeed, by using large-deviation results for random walks on expander graphs, we establish a refinement of his equidistribution theorem. We discuss the connection of these ideas with modern developments (ergodic theory on homogeneous spaces, $L$-functions).

The subconvexity problem for $\GL_{2}$

Generalizing and unifying prior results, we solve the subconvexity problem for the $L$-functions of $\GL_{1}$ and $\GL_{2}$ automorphic representations over a fixed number field, uniformly in all aspects. A novel feature of the present method is the softness of our arguments; this is largely due to a consistent use of canonically normalized period relations, such as those supplied by the work of Waldspurger and Ichino--Ikeda.

On Quantum unique ergodicity for locally symmetric spaces I

We construct an equivariant microlocal lift for locally symmetric spaces. In other words, we demonstrate how to lift, in a ``semi-canonical'' fashion, limits of eigenfunction measures on locally symmetric spaces to Cartan-invariant measures on an appropriate bundle. The construction uses elementary features of the representation theory of semisimple real Lie groups, and can be considered a generalization of Zelditch's results from the upper half-plane to all locally symmetric spaces of noncompact type. This will be applied in a sequel to settle a version of the quantum unique ergodicity problem on certain locally symmetric spaces.
