Polynomially effective equidistribution for unipotent orbits in products of $\mathrm{SL}_2$ factors

We sketch the proof of an effective equidistribution theorem for one-parameter unipotent subgroups in $S$-arithmetic quotients arising from $\mathbf K$-forms of $\mathrm{SL}_2^{\mathsf n}$ where $\mathbf K$ is a number field. This gives an effective version of equidistribution results of Ratner and Shah with a polynomial rate. The key new phenomenon is the existence of many intermediate groups between the $\mathrm{SL}_2$ containing our unipotent and the ambient group, which introduces potential local and global obstruction to equidistribution. Our approach relies on a Bourgain-type projection theorem in the presence of obstructions, together with a careful analysis of these obstructions.

Polynomial effective density in quotients of $\mathbb H^3$ and $\mathbb H^2\times\mathbb H^2$

We prove effective density theorems, with a polynomial error rate, for orbits of the upper triangular subgroup of $\operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb R)$ in arithmetic quotients of $\operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb C)$ and $\operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb R)\times\operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb R)$. The proof is based on the use of a Margulis function, tools from incidence geometry, and the spectral gap of the ambient space.

Recent progress on rigity properties of higher rank diagonalizable actions and applications

The rigidity propeties of higher rank diagonalizable actions is a major theme in homogenous dynamics, with origins in work of Cassels and Swinnerton-Dyer in the 1950s and Furstenberg. We survey both results and conjectures regarding such actions, with emphasize on the applications of these results towards understanding the distribution of integer points on varieties, quantum unique ergodicity, and Diophantine approximations.

Mean dimension of $\mathbb{Z}^k$-actions

Mean dimension is a topological invariant for dynamical systems that is meaningful for systems with infinite dimension and infinite entropy. Given a $\mathbb{Z}^k$-action on a compact metric space $X$, we study the following three problems closely related to mean dimension. (1) When is $X$ isomorphic to the inverse limit of finite entropy systems? (2) Suppose the topological entropy $h_{\mathrm{top}}(X)$ is infinite. How much topological entropy can be detected if one considers $X$ only up to a given level of accuracy? How fast does this amount of entropy grow as the level of resolution becomes finer and finer? (3) When can we embed $X$ into the $\mathbb{Z}^k$-shift on the infinite dimensional cube $([0,1]^D)^{\mathbb{Z}^k}$? These were investigated for $\mathbb{Z}$-actions in [Lindenstrauss, Mean dimension, small entropy factors and an embedding theorem, Inst. Hautes Études Sci. Publ. Math. \textbf{89} (1999) 227-262], but the generalization to $\mathbb{Z}^k$ remained an open problem. When $X$ has the marker property, in particular when $X$ has a completely aperiodic minimal factor, we completely solve (1) and a natural interpretation of (2), and give a reasonably satisfactory answer to (3). A key ingredient is a new method to continuously partition every orbit into good pieces.

Random walks in the group of Euclidean isometries and self-similar measures

We study products of random isometries acting on Euclidean space. Building on previous work of the second author, we prove a local limit theorem for balls of shrinking radius with exponential speed under the assumption that a Markov operator associated to the rotation component of the isometries has spectral gap. We also prove that certain self-similar measures are absolutely continuous with smooth densities. These families of self-similar measures give higher dimensional analogues of Bernoulli convolutions on which absolute continuity can be established for contraction ratios in an open set.

Homogeneous orbit closures and applications

We give new classes of examples of orbits of the diagonal group in the space of unit volume lattices in R^d for d > 2 with nice (homogeneous) orbit closures, as well as examples of orbits with explicitly computable but irregular orbit closures. We give Diophantine applications to the former, for instance we show that if x is the cubic root of 2 then for any y,z in R liminf |n|<nx-y><nx^2-z>=0 (as |n| goes to infinity), where <c> denotes the distance of a real number c to the integers.

Joint Quasimodes, Positive Entropy, and Quantum Unique Ergodicity

We study joint quasimodes of the Laplacian and one Hecke operator on compact congruence surfaces, and give conditions on the orders of the quasimodes that guarantee positive entropy on almost every ergodic component of the corresponding semiclassical measures. Together with the measure classification result of the second-named author, this implies Quantum Unique Ergodicity for such functions. Our result is optimal with respect to the dimension of the space from which the quasi-mode is constructed. We also study equidistribution for sequences of joint quasimodes of the two partial Laplacians on compact irreducible quotients of $\mathbb{H}\times\mathbb{H}$.

The distribution of closed geodesics on the modular surface, and Duke's theorem

We give an ergodic theoretic proof of a theorem of Duke about equidistribution of closed geodesics on the modular surface. The proof is closely related to the work of Yu. Linnik and B. Skubenko, who in particular proved this equidistribution under an additional congruence assumption on the discriminant. We give a more conceptual treatment using entropy theory, and show how to use positivity of the discriminant as a substitute for Linnik's congruence condition.

Distribution of periodic torus orbits and Duke's theorem for cubic fields

We study periodic torus orbits on spaces of lattices. Using the action of the group of adelic points of the underlying tori, we define a natural equivalence relation on these orbits, and show that the equivalence classes become uniformly distributed. This is a cubic analogue of Duke's theorem about the distribution of closed geodesics on the modular surface: suitably interpreted, the ideal classes of a cubic totally real field are equidistributed in the modular 5-fold SL_3(Z)\SL_3(R)/SO_3(R). In particular, this proves (a stronger form of) the folklore conjecture that the collection of maximal compact flats in SL_3(Z)\SL_3(R)/SO_3(R) of volume less than V becomes equidistributed as V goes to infinity. The proof combines subconvexity estimates, measure classification, and local harmonic analysis.

Graph Eigenfunctions and Quantum Unique Ergodicity

We apply the techniques of our previous paper to study joint eigenfunctions of the Laplacian and one Hecke operator on compact congruence surfaces, and joint eigenfunctions of the two partial Laplacians on compact quotients of $\mathbb{H}\times\mathbb{H}$. In both cases, we show that quantum limit measures of such sequences of eigenfunctions carry positive entropy on almost every ergodic component. Together with prior work of the second named author, this implies Quantum Unique Ergodicity for such functions.
