Giant Magnetoresistance Effect in the Metal-Insulator Transition of Pyrochlore Oxide Nd2Ir2O7

We investigated the magnetoresistance (MR) effect of the pyrochlore oxide Nd2Ir2O7, which shows a metal-insulator transition at T_MI =33 K. A small positive MR effect was observed in the metallic state above T_MI, while a large negative MR effect was observed in the insulating state below T_MI . MR effects exceeding 3000% were found at 1 K at a field of 9 T. As a result, we confirmed the crossover from the insulating state to a state with a small or partial band gap in a field up to 56 T. Furthermore, from the MR effect in Eu2Ir2O7 (T_MI = 120 K) and Gd$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ (T_MI = 127 K), we revealed that the large negative MR effect of the pyrochlore iridate Ln2Ir2O7 depends on the magnetism of the lanthanide Ln^{3+} ion. The d-f interaction plays a significant role in the large negative MR effect in the insulating state.

Magnetic order in pyrochlore iridate Nd$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ probed by muon spin relaxation

Muon-spin relaxation results on the pyrochlore iridate Nd$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ are reported. Spontaneous coherent muon-spin precession below the metal-insulator transition (MIT) temperature of about 33 K is observed, indicating the appearance of a long-ranged magnetic ordering of Ir$^{4+}$ moments. With further decrease in temperature, the internal field at the muon site increases again below about 9 K. The second increase of internal field suggests the ordering of Nd$^{3+}$ moments, which is consistent with a previous neutron experiment. Our results suggest that the MIT and magnetic ordering of Ir$^{4+}$ moments have a close relationship and that the large spin-orbit coupling of Ir 5\textit{d} electrons plays a key role for both MIT and the mechanism of the magnetic ordering in pyrochlore iridates in the insulting ground state.

Crystal structure and superconducting properties of hexagonal lithium-niobium oxynitride

A hexagonal oxynitride (Li0.88_0.12)Nb3.0(O0.13N0.87)4 was synthesized through ammonia nitridation of LiNb3O8. The structural analysis revealed that this oxynitride consists of alternate stacking of octahedral and prismatic layers with different Li/Nb ratios: significant amounts of Li and Nb atoms (Li/Nb = 43/57) coexist in the octahedral layer, while the prismatic site is preferentially occupied by Nb (Li/Nb = 3/97). A metallic behavior was accompanied by an abrupt drop of electrical resistivity at about 3 K. Furthermore, large diamagnetism and specific-heat anomaly were observed below this temperature, suggesting the appearance of superconductivity in the Li-Nb oxynitride.
