Giant Magnetoresistance Effect in the Metal-Insulator Transition of Pyrochlore Oxide Nd2Ir2O7

We investigated the magnetoresistance (MR) effect of the pyrochlore oxide Nd2Ir2O7, which shows a metal-insulator transition at T_MI =33 K. A small positive MR effect was observed in the metallic state above T_MI, while a large negative MR effect was observed in the insulating state below T_MI . MR effects exceeding 3000% were found at 1 K at a field of 9 T. As a result, we confirmed the crossover from the insulating state to a state with a small or partial band gap in a field up to 56 T. Furthermore, from the MR effect in Eu2Ir2O7 (T_MI = 120 K) and Gd$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ (T_MI = 127 K), we revealed that the large negative MR effect of the pyrochlore iridate Ln2Ir2O7 depends on the magnetism of the lanthanide Ln^{3+} ion. The d-f interaction plays a significant role in the large negative MR effect in the insulating state.

Magnetic order in pyrochlore iridate Nd$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ probed by muon spin relaxation

Muon-spin relaxation results on the pyrochlore iridate Nd$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ are reported. Spontaneous coherent muon-spin precession below the metal-insulator transition (MIT) temperature of about 33 K is observed, indicating the appearance of a long-ranged magnetic ordering of Ir$^{4+}$ moments. With further decrease in temperature, the internal field at the muon site increases again below about 9 K. The second increase of internal field suggests the ordering of Nd$^{3+}$ moments, which is consistent with a previous neutron experiment. Our results suggest that the MIT and magnetic ordering of Ir$^{4+}$ moments have a close relationship and that the large spin-orbit coupling of Ir 5\textit{d} electrons plays a key role for both MIT and the mechanism of the magnetic ordering in pyrochlore iridates in the insulting ground state.

A Magnetic Transition Probed by the Ce Ion in Square-Lattice Antiferromagnet CeMnAsO

We examined the magnetic properties of the square-lattice antiferromagnets CeMnAsO and LaMnAsO and their solid solutions La1-xCexMnAsO by resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity measurements below room temperature. A first-order phase transition is observed at 34.1 K, below which the ground-state doublet of the Ce ion splits by 3.53 meV. It is likely that Mn moments already ordered above room temperature are reoriented at the transition, as reported for related compounds, such as NdMnAsO and PrMnSbO. This transition generates a large internal magnetic field at the Ce site in spite of the fact that simple Heisenberg interactions should be cancelled out at the Ce site owing to geometrical frustration. The transition takes place at nearly the same temperature with the substitution of La for Ce up to 90%. The Ce moment does not undergo long-range order by itself, but is parasitically induced at the transition, serving as a good probe for detecting the magnetism of Mn spins in a square lattice.

Quantum spin fluctuations in the spin liquid state of Tb2Ti2O7

Neutron scattering experiments on a polycrystalline sample of the frustrated pyrochlore magnet Tb2Ti2O7, which does not show any magnetic order down to 50 mK, have revealed that it shows condensation behavior below 0.4 K from a thermally fluctuating paramagnetic state to a spin-liquid ground-state with quantum spin fluctuations. Energy spectra change from quasielastic scattering to a continuum with a double-peak structure at energies of 0 and 0.8 K in the spin-liquid state. Specific heat shows an anomaly at the crossover temperature.
