Correlation effect in Sr$_{1-x}$La$_x$RuO$_3$ studied by soft x-ray photoemission spectroscopy

To clarify how the electronic state of Sr1-xLaxRuO3 evolves with La doping, we conducted photoemission (PES) experiments using soft x-rays. The spectral shape of the Ru 4d derived peak near the Fermi level changes significantly with increasing x. This variation indicates that a spectral weight transfer from the coherent to incoherent component occurs due to an enhancement of the electron correlation effect. Resonant PES experiments at the La 3d_{5/2} edge have confirmed that there is no significant contribution of the La 5d state in the energy range where the spectral weight transfer is observed. Using the dependence of the photoelectron mean free path on the photon energy, we subtracted the surface components from the PES spectra and confirmed that the enhancement of the electron correlation effect with La doping is an intrinsic bulk phenomenon. On the other hand, a large portion of the coherent component remains at the Fermi level up to x = 0.5, reflecting that the Ru 4d state still has itinerant characteristics. Moreover, we found that the PES spectra hardly depend on the temperature and do not exhibit a discernible change with magnetic ordering, suggesting that the temperature variation of the exchange splitting does not follow the prediction of the Stoner theory. The presently obtained experimental results indicate that the electron correlation effect plays an important role in Sr1-xLaxRuO3 and that the Ru 4d electrons possess both local and itinerant characteristics.

Muon Spin Relaxation and Neutron Diffraction Studies of Cluster-Glass States in Sr1-xLaxRuO3

To clarify the magnetic properties of cluster-glass states in Sr1-xLaxRuO3 (0.3 <= x <= 0.5), we report herein the results of muon spin relaxation (muSR) and neutron powder diffraction measurements. The muSR experiments showed that magnetic clusters start developing well above the peak temperature T^* in the ac susceptibility. The volume fraction of the magnetically ordered region increases continuously with decreasing temperature, showing no anomaly at T^*, and reaches nearly 100% at the lowest temperature. The temperature variation of the volume fraction is essentially independent of the La concentration in the x range presently investigated, although the dc magnetization is significantly suppressed with increasing x. Neutron powder diffraction experiments revealed that the ground state for x = 0.3 is a long-range ferromagnetic ordered state. These results indicate that, with decreasing temperature, cluster-glass states in Sr1-xLaxRuO3 gradually develop into long-range ferromagnetic ordered states with decreasing temperature, and that the magnetic ordering process differs strikingly from that expected for a conventional second-order ferromagnetic transition.

Electronic structures of ferromagnetic superconductors $\mathrm{UGe}_2$ and $\mathrm{UCoGe}$ studied by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy

The electronic structures of the ferromagnetic superconductors $\mathrm{UGe}_2$ and $\mathrm{UCoGe}$ in the paramagnetic phase were studied by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy using soft X-rays ($hν=400-500$). The quasi-particle bands with large contributions from $\mathrm{U}~5f$ states were observed in the vicinity of $E_\mathrm{F}$, suggesting that the $\mathrm{U}~5f$ electrons of these compounds have an itinerant character. Their overall band structures were explained by the band-structure calculations treating all the $\mathrm{U}~5f$ electrons as being itinerant. Meanwhile, the states in the vicinity of $E_\mathrm{F}$ show considerable deviations from the results of band-structure calculations, suggesting that the shapes of Fermi surface of these compounds are qualitatively different from the calculations, possibly caused by electron correlation effect in the complicated band structures of the low-symmetry crystals. Strong hybridization between $\mathrm{U}~5f$ and $\mathrm{Co}~3d$ states in $\mathrm{UCoGe}$ were found by the $\mathrm{Co}~2p-3d$ resonant photoemission experiment, suggesting that $\mathrm{Co}~3d$ states have finite contributions to the magnetic, transport, and superconducting properties.

Ferromagnetic cluster-glass state in itinerant electron system Sr1-xLaxRuO3

The magnetic and electronic properties of Sr1-xLaxRuO3 were studied by means of dc-magnetization, ac-susceptibility, specific heat, and electrical resistivity measurements. The dc-magnetization and ac-susceptibility measurements have revealed that the transition temperature and the ordered moment of the ferromagnetic order are strongly suppressed as La is substituted for Sr. The ac-susceptibility exhibits a peak at T* due to the occurrence of spontaneous spin polarization. Furthermore, we observed that T* shows clear frequency variations for x>= 0.3. The magnitude of the frequency shifts of T* is comparable to that of cluster-glass systems, and the frequency dependence is well described in terms of the Vogel-Fulcher law. On the other hand, it is found that the linear specific heat coefficient gamma enhances with the suppression of the ferromagnetic order. The relatively large gamma values reflect the presence of the Ru 4d state at Fermi level, and hence, the magnetism of this system is considered to be tightly coupled with the itinerant characteristics of the Ru 4d electrons. The present experimental results and analyses suggest that the intrinsic coexistence of the spatially inhomogeneous magnetic state and the itinerant nature of the Ru 4d electrons is realized in this system, and such a feature may be commonly involved in La- and Ca-doped SrRuO3.

Itinerant magnetism in URhGe revealed by angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy

The electronic structure of the ferromagnetic superconductor URhGe in the paramagnetic phase has been studied by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy using soft x rays (hn=595-700 eV). Dispersive bands with large contributions from U 5f states were observed in the ARPES spectra, and form Fermi surfaces. The band structure in the paramagnetic phase is partly explained by the band-structure calculation treating all U 5f electrons as being itinerant, suggesting that an itinerant description of U 5f states is a good starting point for this compound. On the other hand, there are qualitative disagreements especially in the band structure near the Fermi level (E_B < 0.5 eV). The experimentally observed bands are less dispersive than the calculation, and the shape of the Fermi surface is different from the calculation. The changes in spectral functions due to the ferromagnetic transition were observed in bands near the Fermi level, suggesting that the ferromagnetism in this compound has an itinerant origin.

Na-ion dynamics in Quasi-1D compound NaV2O4

We have used the pulsed muon source at ISIS to study high-temperature Na-ion dynamics in the quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) metallic antiferromagnet NaV2O4. By performing systematic zero-field and longitudinal-field measurements as a function of temperature we clearly distinguish that the hopping rate increases exponentially above Tdiff=250 K. The data is well fitted to an Arrhenius type equation typical for a diffusion process, showing that the Na-ions starts to be mobile above Tdiff . Such results makes this compound very interesting for the tuning of Q1D magnetism using atomic-scale ion-texturing through the periodic potential from ordered Na-vacancies. Further, it also opens the door to possible use of NaV2O4 and related compounds in energy related applications.

Possible Evolution of Antiferromagnetism in Zn-Doped Heavy-Fermion Superconductor CeCoIn5

We have succeeded in growing single crystals of the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCo(In1-xZnx)5 with x<=0.07. Measurements of specific heat, electrical resistivity, dc magnetization and ac susceptibility revealed that the superconducting (SC) transition temperature Tc decreases from 2.25 K (x=0) to 1.8 K (x=0.05) by doping Zn into CeCoIn5. Furthermore, these measurements indicate a development of a new ordered phase below T_o ~ 2.2 K for x=>0.05, characterized by the reduced magnetization and electrical resistivity in the ordered phase, and the enhancement of specific heat at T_o. This phase transition can be also recognized by the shoulder-like anomaly seen at H_o ~ 55 kOe in the field variations of the magnetization at low temperatures, which is clearly distinguished from the superconducting critical fields Hc2=49 kOe for x=0.05 and 42 kOe for x=0.07. We suggest from these results that the antiferromagnetic (AFM) order is generated by doping Zn, and the interplay between the SC and AFM orders is realized in CeCo(In1-xZnx)5.

Magnetic instability induced by Rh-doping in Kondo semiconductor CeRu$_2$Al$_{10}$

Magnetic ground state of Rh-doped Kondo semiconductor CeRu$_2$Al$_{10}$ [Ce(Ru$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$)$_2$Al$_{10}$] is investigated by muon-spin relaxation method. Muon-spin precession with two frequencies is observed in the $x$ = 0 sample, while only one frequency is present in the $x$ = 0.05 and 0.1 samples, which is attributed to the broad static field distribution at the muon site. The internal field at the muon site is enhanced from about 180 G in $x$ = 0 sample to about 800 G in the Rh-doped samples, supporting the spin-flop transition as suggested by macroscopic measurements, and the boundary of different magnetic ground states is identified around $x$ = 0.03. The drastic change of magnetic ground state by a small amount of Rh-doping (3%) indicates that the magnetic structure in CeRu$_2$Al$_{10}$ is not robust and can be easily tuned by external perturbations such as electron doping. The anomalous temperature dependence of internal field in CeRu$_2$Al$_{10}$ is suggested to be attributed to the hyperfine interaction between muons and conduction electrons.

Magnetic order in pyrochlore iridate Nd$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ probed by muon spin relaxation

Muon-spin relaxation results on the pyrochlore iridate Nd$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ are reported. Spontaneous coherent muon-spin precession below the metal-insulator transition (MIT) temperature of about 33 K is observed, indicating the appearance of a long-ranged magnetic ordering of Ir$^{4+}$ moments. With further decrease in temperature, the internal field at the muon site increases again below about 9 K. The second increase of internal field suggests the ordering of Nd$^{3+}$ moments, which is consistent with a previous neutron experiment. Our results suggest that the MIT and magnetic ordering of Ir$^{4+}$ moments have a close relationship and that the large spin-orbit coupling of Ir 5\textit{d} electrons plays a key role for both MIT and the mechanism of the magnetic ordering in pyrochlore iridates in the insulting ground state.

Electronic Structure of Heavy Fermion Uranium Compounds Studied by Core-Level Photoelectron Spectroscopy

High-energy-resolution core-level and valence-band photoelectron spectroscopic studies were performed for the heavy Fermion uranium compounds UGe2, UCoGe, URhGe, URu2Si2, UNi2Al3, UPd2Al3, and UPt3 as well as typical localized and itinerant uranium compounds to understand the relationship between the uranium valence state and their core-level spectral line shapes. In addition to the main line and high-binding energy satellite structure recognized in the core-level spectra of uranium compounds, a shoulder structure on the lower binding energy side of the main lines of localized and nearly localized uranium compounds was also found. The spectral line shapes show a systematic variation depending on the U 5f electronic structure. The core-level spectra of UGe2, UCoGe, URhGe, URu2Si2, and UNi2Al3 are rather similar to those of itinerant compounds, suggesting that U 5f electrons in these compounds are well hybridized with ligand states. On the other hand, the core-level spectra of UPd2Al3 and UPt3 show considerably different spectral line shapes from those of the itinerant compounds, suggesting that U 5f electrons in UPd2Al3 and UPt3 are less hybridized with ligand states, leading to the correlated nature of U 5f electrons in these compounds. The dominant final state characters in their core-level spectra suggest that the numbers of 5f electrons in UGe2, UCoGe, URhGe, URu2Si2, UNi2Al3, and UPd2Al3 are close to but less than three, while that of UPt3 is close to two rather than to three.
