Characteristic approach to the soliton resolution

As a toy model for understanding the soliton resolution phenomenon we consider a characteristic initial boundary value problem for the 4$d$ equivariant Yang-Mills equation outside a ball. Our main objective is to illustrate the advantages of employing outgoing null (or asymptotically null) foliations in analyzing the relaxation processes due to the dispersal of energy by radiation. In particular, within this approach it is evident that the endstate of evolution must be non-radiative (meaning vanishing flux of energy at future null infinity). In our toy model such non-radiative configurations are given by a static solution (called the half-kink) plus an alternating chain of $N$ decoupled kinks and antikinks. We show numerically that the configurations $N=0$ (static half-kink) and $N=1$ (superposition of the static half-kink and the antikink which recedes to infinity) appear as generic attractors and we determine a codimension-one borderline between their basins of attraction. The rates of convergence to these attractors are analyzed in detail.

Dynamics at the threshold for blowup for supercritical wave equations outside a ball

We consider spherically symmetric supercritical focusing wave equations outside a ball. Using mixed analytical and numerical methods, we show that the threshold for blowup is given by a codimension-one stable manifold of the unique static solution with exactly one unstable direction. We analyze in detail the convergence to this critical solution for initial data fine-tuned to the threshold.

Vacuum initial data on $\mathbb{S}^3$ from Killing vectors

We construct compact initial data of constant mean curvature $\widetilde{K}$ for Einstein's 4d vacuum equations with $\widehatΛ = Λ- (\widetilde{K}^2/3)$ positive, where $Λ$ is the cosmological constant, via the conformal method. To construct a transverse, trace-free (TT) momentum tensor explicitly we first observe that, if the seed manifold has two orthogonal Killing vectors, their symmetrized tensor product is a natural TT candidate. Without the orthogonality requirement, but on locally conformally flat seed manifolds there is a generalized construction for the momentum which also involves the derivatives of the Killing fields found in work by Beig and Krammer [2]. We consider in particular the round three sphere and classify the TT tensors resulting from all possible pairs of its six Killing vectors, focusing on the commuting case where the seed data are $\mathbb{U}(1) \times \mathbb{U}(1)$ -symmetric. As to solving the Lichnerowicz equation, we discuss in particular potential "symmetry breaking" by which we mean that solutions have less symmetries than the equation itself; we compare with the case of the "round donut" of topology $\mathbb{S}^2 \times \mathbb{S}$. In the absence of symmetry breaking, the Lichnerowicz equation for a $\mathbb{U}(1) \times \mathbb{U}(1)$ symmetric momentum on $\mathbb{S}^3$ reduces to an ODE. We analyze distinguished families of solutions and the resulting data via a combination of analytical and numerical techniques. Finally we investigate marginally trapped surfaces of toroidal topology in our data.

A Yang-Mills field on the extremal Reissner-Nordström black hole

We consider a spherically symmetric (magnetic) $SU(2)$ Yang-Mills field propagating on the exterior of the extremal Reissner-Nordström black hole. Taking advantage of the conformal symmetry, we reduce the problem to the study of the Yang-Mills equation in a geodesically complete spacetime with two asymptotically flat ends. We prove the existence of infinitely many static solutions (two of which are found in closed form) and determine the spectrum of their linear perturbations and quasinormal modes. Finally, using the hyperboloidal approach to the initial value problem, we describe the process of relaxation to the static endstates of evolution for various initial data.

Initial data for rotating cosmologies

We revisit the construction of maximal initial data on compact manifolds in vacuum with positive cosmological constant via the conformal method. We discuss, extend and apply recent results of Hebey et al. [19] and Premoselli [31] which yield existence, non-existence, (non-)uniqueness and (linearisation-) stability of solutions of the Lichnerowicz equation, depending on its coefficients. We then focus on so-called $(t,φ)$-symmetric data as "seed manifolds", and in particular on Bowen-York data on the round hypertorus $\mathbb{S}^2 \times \mathbb{S}$ (a slice of Nariai) and on Kerr-deSitter. In the former case, we clarify the bifurcation structure of the axially symmetric solutions of the Lichnerowicz equation in terms of the angular momentum as bifurcation parameter, using a combination of analytical and numerical techniques. As to the latter example, we show how dynamical data can be constructed in a natural way via conformal rescalings of Kerr-deSitter data.

Resonant dynamics and the instability of anti-de Sitter spacetime

We consider spherically symmetric Einstein-massless-scalar field equations with negative cosmological constant in five dimensions and analyze evolution of small perturbations of anti-de Sitter spacetime using the recently proposed resonant approximation. We show that for typical initial data the solution of the resonant system develops an oscillatory singularity in finite time. This result hints at a possible route to establishing instability of AdS under arbitrarily small perturbations.

Generic self-similar blowup for equivariant wave maps and Yang-Mills fields in higher dimensions

We consider equivariant wave maps from the $(d+1)$--dimensional Minkowski spacetime into the $d$-sphere for $d\geq 4$. We find a new explicit stable self-similar solution and give numerical evidence that it plays the role of a universal attractor for generic blowup. An analogous result is obtained for the $SO(d)$ symmetric Yang-Mills field for $d\geq 6$.

Global dynamics of a Yang-Mills field on an asymptotically hyperbolic space

We consider a spherically symmetric (purely magnetic) SU(2) Yang-Mills field propagating on an ultrastatic spacetime with two asymptotically hyperbolic regions connected by a throat of radius $α$. Static solutions in this model are shown to exhibit an interesting bifurcation pattern in the parameter $α$. We relate this pattern to the Morse index of the static solution with maximal energy. Using a hyperboloidal approach to the initial value problem, we describe the relaxation to the ground state solution for generic initial data and unstable static solutions for initial data of codimension one, two, and three.

Wave maps on a wormhole

We consider equivariant wave maps from a wormhole spacetime into the three-sphere. This toy-model is designed for gaining insight into the dissipation-by-dispersion phenomena, in particular the soliton resolution conjecture. We first prove that for each topological degree of the map there exists a unique static solution (harmonic map) which is linearly stable. Then, using the hyperboloidal formulation of the initial value problem, we give numerical evidence that every solution starting from smooth initial data of any topological degree evolves asymptotically to the harmonic map of the same degree. The late-time asymptotics of this relaxation process is described in detail.

A remark about wave equations on the extreme Reissner-Nordström black hole exterior

We consider a massless scalar field propagating on the exterior of the extreme Reissner-Nordström black hole. Using a discrete conformal symmetry of this spacetime, we draw a one-to-one relationship between the behavior of the field near the future horizon and near future null infinity. In particular, we show that the polynomial growth of the second and higher transversal derivatives along the horizon, recently found by Aretakis, reflects well known facts about the retarded time asymptotics at null infinity.

Globally regular instability of $AdS_3$

We consider three-dimensional AdS gravity minimally coupled to a massless scalar field and study numerically the evolution of small smooth circularly symmetric perturbations of the $AdS_3$ spacetime. As in higher dimensions, for a large class of perturbations, we observe a turbulent cascade of energy to high frequencies which entails instability of $AdS_3$. However, in contrast to higher dimensions, the cascade cannot be terminated by black hole formation because small perturbations have energy below the black hole threshold. This situation appears to be challenging for the cosmic censor. Analysing the energy spectrum of the cascade we determine the width $ρ(t)$ of the analyticity strip of solutions in the complex spatial plane and argue by extrapolation that $ρ(t)$ does not vanish in finite time. This provides evidence that the turbulence is too weak to produce a naked singularity and the solutions remain globally regular in time, in accordance with the cosmic censorship hypothesis.

Dynamics near the threshold for blowup in the one-dimensional focusing nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation

We study dynamics near the threshold for blowup in the focusing nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation $u_{tt}-u_{xx} + u - |u|^{2α} u =0$ on the line. Using mixed numerical and analytical methods we find that solutions starting from even initial data, fine-tuned to the threshold, are trapped by the static solution $S$ for intermediate times. The details of trapping are shown to depend on the power $α$, namely, we observe fast convergence to $S$ for $α>1$, slow convergence for $α=1$, and very slow (if any) convergence for $0<α<1$. Our findings are complementary with respect to the recent rigorous analysis of the same problem (for $α>2$) by Krieger, Nakanishi, and Schlag \cite{kns}.

Equivariant wave maps exterior to a ball

We consider the exterior Cauchy-Dirichlet problem for equivariant wave maps from 3+1 dimensional Minkowski spacetime into the three-sphere. Using mixed analytical and numerical methods we show that, for a given topological degree of the map, all solutions starting from smooth finite energy initial data converge to the unique static solution (harmonic map). The asymptotics of this relaxation process is described in detail. We hope that our model will provide an attractive mathematical setting for gaining insight into dissipation-by-dispersion phenomena, in particular the soliton resolution conjecture.

On weakly turbulent instability of anti-de Sitter space

We study the nonlinear evolution of a weakly perturbed anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime by solving numerically the four-dimensional spherically symmetric Einstein-massless-scalar field equations with negative cosmological constant. Our results suggest that AdS spacetime is unstable under arbitrarily small generic perturbations. We conjecture that this instability is triggered by a resonant mode mixing which gives rise to diffusion of energy from low to high frequencies.

Shrinkers, expanders, and the unique continuation beyond generic blowup in the heat flow for harmonic maps between spheres

Using mixed analytical and numerical methods we investigate the development of singularities in the heat flow for corotational harmonic maps from the $d$-dimensional sphere to itself for $3\leq d\leq 6$. By gluing together shrinking and expanding asymptotically self-similar solutions we construct global weak solutions which are smooth everywhere except for a sequence of times $T_1<T_2<...<T_k<\infty$ at which there occurs the type I blow-up at one of the poles of the sphere. We show that in the generic case the continuation beyond blow-up is unique, the topological degree of the map changes by one at each blow-up time $T_i$, and eventually the solution comes to rest at the zero energy constant map.

Saddle-point dynamics of a Yang-Mills field on the exterior Schwarzschild spacetime

We consider the Cauchy problem for a spherically symmetric SU(2) Yang-Mills field propagating outside the Schwarzschild black hole. Although solutions starting from smooth finite energy initial data remain smooth for all times, not all of them scatter since there are non-generic solutions which asymptotically tend to unstable static solutions. We show that a static solution with one unstable mode appears as an intermediate attractor in the evolution of initial data near a border between basins of attraction of two different vacuum states. We study the saddle-point dynamics near this attractor, in particular we identify the universal phases of evolution: the ringdown approach, the exponential departure, and the eventual decay to one of the vacuum states.

A note about late-time wave tails on a dynamical background

Consider a spherically symmetric spacetime generated by a self-gravitating massless scalar field $ϕ$ and let $ψ$ be a test (nonspherical) massless scalar field propagating on this dynamical background. Gundlach, Price, and Pullin \cite{gpp2} computed numerically the late-time tails for different multipoles of the field $ψ$ and suggested that solutions with compactly supported initial data decay in accord with Price's law as $t^{-(2\ell+3)}$ at timelike infinity. We show that in the case of the time-dependent background Price's law holds only for $\ell=0$ while for each $\ell\geq 1$ the tail decays as $t^{-(2\ell+2)}$.

Late-time tails of a self-gravitating massless scalar field, revisited

We discuss the nonlinear origin of the power-law tail in the long-time evolution of a spherically symmetric self-gravitating massless scalar field in even-dimensional spacetimes. Using third-order perturbation method, we derive explicit expressions for the tail (the decay rate and the amplitude) for solutions starting from small initial data and we verify this prediction via numerical integration of the Einstein-scalar field equations in four and six dimensions. Our results show that the coincidence of decay rates of linear and nonlinear tails in four dimensions (which has misguided some tail hunters in the past) is in a sense accidental and does not hold in higher dimensions.

Codimension-two critical behavior in vacuum gravitational collapse

We consider the critical behavior at the threshold of black hole formation for the five dimensional vacuum Einstein equations satisfying the cohomogeneity-two triaxial Bianchi IX ansatz. Exploiting a discrete symmetry present in this model we predict the existence of a codimension-two attractor. This prediction is confirmed numerically and the codimension-two attractor is identified as a discretely self-similar solution with two unstable modes.

Late-time tails of a Yang-Mills field on Minkowski and Schwarzschild backgrounds

We study the late-time behavior of spherically symmetric solutions of the Yang-Mills equations on Minkowski and Schwarzschild backgrounds. Using nonlinear perturbation theory we show in both cases that solutions having smooth compactly supported initial data posses tails which decay as $t^{-4}$ at timelike infinity. Moreover, for small initial data on Minkowski background we derive the third-order formula for the amplitude of the tail and confirm numerically its accuracy.

On blowup for semilinear wave equations with a focusing nonlinearity

In this paper we report on numerical studies of formation of singularities for the semilinear wave equations with a focusing power nonlinearity $u_{tt} - Δu = u^{p}$ in three space dimensions. We show that for generic large initial data that lead to singularities, the spatial pattern of blowup can be described in terms of linearized perturbations about the fundamental self-similar (homogeneous in space) solution. We consider also non-generic initial data which are fine-tuned to the threshold for blowup and identify critical solutions that separate blowup from dispersal for some values of the exponent $p$.

Equivariant self-similar wave maps from Minkowski spacetime into 3-sphere

We prove existence of a countable family of spherically symmetric self-similar wave maps from 3+1 Minkowski spacetime into the 3-sphere. These maps can be viewed as excitations of the ground state wave map found previously by Shatah. The first excitation is particularly interesting in the context of the Cauchy problem since it plays the role of a critical solution sitting at the threshold of singularity formation. We analyze the linear stability of our wave maps and show that the number of unstable modes about a given map is equal to its excitation index. Finally, we formulate a condition under which these results can be generalized to higher dimensions.

Self-similar spherically symmetric wave maps coupled to gravity

We investigate spherically symmetric continuously self-similar (CSS) solutions in the SU(2) sigma model coupled to gravity. Using mixed numerical and analytical methods, we provide evidence for the existence (for small coupling) of a countable family of regular CSS solutions. This fact is argued to have important implications for the ongoing studies of black hole formation in the model.

Critical Collapse of Skyrmions

We study first order phase transitions in the gravitational collapse of spherically symmetric skyrmions. Static sphaleron solutions are shown to play the role of critical solutions separating black-hole spacetimes from no-black-hole spacetimes. In particular, we find a new type of first order phase transition where subcritical data do not disperse but evolve towards a static regular stable solution. We also demonstrate explicitly that the near-critical solutions depart from the intermediate asymptotic regime along the unstable manifold of the critical solution.
