The structure of the singular ring in Kerr-like metrics

The Kerr geometry is believed to represent the exterior spacetime of astrophysical black holes. We here re-analyze the geometry of Kerr-like metrics (Kerr, Kerr-Newman, Kerr-de Sitter, and Kerr-anti de Sitter), paying particular attention to the region near the singular set. We find that, although the Kretschmann scalar vanishes at the singular set along a given direction, a certain combination of curvature invariants diverges regardless of the direction of approach. We also find that the two-dimensional geometry induced by the spacetime metric on the orbits of the isometry group also possesses a singularity regardless of the direction of approach. Likewise, the two-dimensional geometry in the directions orthogonal to the isometry orbits is $C^{2}$-divergent, but extends continuously at the singular set as a cone with opening angle $4π$. We conclude by showing that tidal forces lead to infinite stresses on neighboring geodesics that approach the singular set, destroying any such observers in finite proper time. Those geodesics that come in from infinity and do not hit the singular set but approach it are found to need tremendous energy to get close to the singular set, experiencing an acceleration transversal to the equatorial plane which grows without bound when the minimal distance of approach goes to zero. While establishing these results, we also present an alternative description of some other known properties, as well as introducing toroidal coordinates that provide a hands-on description of the double-covering for the geometry near the singular set.

Future-complete null hypersurfaces, interior gluings, and the Trautman-Bondi mass

We present the argument that the past limit of the Trautman-Bondi mass is the ADM mass under weak hypotheses on the decay of the metric towards spatial infinity, without any smallness conditions on the initial data, assuming well defined energy, momentum, center of mass and angular moment. Part of the proof consists of a careful inspection of the proof of stability of Minkowski space-time, which is sketched. This is complemented by an interior gluing result for asymptotically flat initial data with well defined Poincaré charges, which is proved in detail.

On the characteristic initial value problem for nonlinear symmetric hyperbolic systems, including Einstein equations

We consider a characteristic initial value problem for a class of symmetric hyperbolic systems with initial data given on two smooth null intersecting characteristic surfaces. We prove existence of solutions on a future neighborhood of the initial surfaces. The general result is applied to general semilinear wave equations, as well as the Einstein equations with or without sources, and conformal variations thereof.

The cosmological constant and the energy of gravitational radiation

We propose a definition of mass for characteristic hypersurfaces in asymptotically vacuum space-times with non-vanishing cosmological constant $Λ\in {\mathbb R}^*$, generalising the definition of Trautman and Bondi for $Λ=0$. We show that our definition reduces to some standard definitions in several situations. We establish a balance formula linking the characteristic mass and a suitably defined renormalised volume of the null hypersurface, generalising the positivity identity of one of us (PTC) and Paetz proved when $Λ=0$.

On differentiability of volume time functions

We show differentiability of a class of Geroch's volume functions on globally hyperbolic manifolds. Furthermore, we prove that every volume function satisfies a local anti-Lipschitz condition over causal curves, and that locally Lipschitz time functions which are locally anti-Lipschitz can be uniformly approximated by smooth time functions with timelike gradient. Finally, we prove that in stably causal spacetimes Hawking's time function can be uniformly approximated by smooth time functions with timelike gradient.

Characteristic initial data and smoothness of Scri. I. Framework and results

We analyze the Cauchy problem for the vacuum Einstein equations with data on a complete light-cone in an asymptotically Minkowskian space-time. We provide conditions on the free initial data which guarantee existence of global solutions of the characteristic constraint equations. We present necessary-and-sufficient conditions on characteristic initial data in $3+1$ dimensions to have no logarithmic terms in an asymptotic expansion at null infinity.

On Lorentzian causality with continuous metrics

We present a systematic study of causality theory on Lorentzian manifolds with continuous metrics. Examples are given which show that some standard facts in smooth Lorentzian geometry, such as light-cones being hypersurfaces, are wrong when metrics which are merely continuous are considered. We show that existence of time functions remains true on domains of dependence with continuous metrics, and that $C^{0,1}$ differentiability of the metric suffices for many key results of the smooth causality theory.

Stationary Black Holes: Uniqueness and Beyond

The spectrum of known black-hole solutions to the stationary Einstein equations has been steadily increasing, sometimes in unexpected ways. In particular, it has turned out that not all black-hole-equilibrium configurations are characterized by their mass, angular momentum and global charges. Moreover, the high degree of symmetry displayed by vacuum and electro-vacuum black-hole spacetimes ceases to exist in self-gravitating non-linear field theories. This text aims to review some developments in the subject and to discuss them in light of the uniqueness theorem for the Einstein-Maxwell system.

Construction of N-body initial data sets in general relativity

Given a collection of N solutions of the (3+1) vacuum Einstein constraint equations which are asymptotically Euclidean, we show how to construct a new solution of the constraints which is itself asymptotically Euclidean, and which contains specified sub-regions of each of the N given solutions. This generalizes earlier work which handled the time-symmetric case, thus providing a construction of large classes of initial data for the many body problem in general relativity.

Maximal analytic extensions of the Emparan-Reall black ring

We construct a Kruskal-Szekeres-type analytic extension of the Emparan-Reall black ring, and investigate its geometry. We prove that the extension is maximal, globally hyperbolic, and unique within a natural class of extensions. The key to those results is the proof that causal geodesics are either complete, or approach a singular boundary in finite affine time. Alternative maximal analytic extensions are also constructed.

On smoothness of Black Saturns

We prove smoothness of the domain of outer communications (d.o.c.) of the Black Saturn solutions of Elvang and Figueras. We show that the metric on the d.o.c. extends smoothly across two disjoint event horizons with topology R x S^3 and R x S^1 x S^2. We establish stable causality of the d.o.c. when the Komar angular momentum of the spherical component of the horizon vanishes, and present numerical evidence for stable causality in general.

On the global structure of the Pomeransky-Senkov black holes

We construct analytic extensions of the Pomeransky-Senkov metrics with multiple Killing horizons and asymptotic regions. We show that, in our extensions, the singularities associated to an obstruction to differentiability of the metric lie beyond event horizons. We analyze the topology of the non-empty singular set, which turns out to be parameter-dependent. We present numerical evidence for stable causality of the domain of outer communications. The resulting global structure is somewhat reminiscent of that of Kerr space-time.

Solutions of quasi-linear wave equations polyhomogeneous at null infinity in high dimensions

We prove propagation of weighted Sobolev regularity for solutions of the hyperboloidal Cauchy problem for a class of quasi-linear symmetric hyperbolic systems, under structure conditions compatible with the Einstein-Maxwell equations in space-time dimensions $n+1\ge 7$. Similarly we prove propagation of polyhomogeneity in dimensions $n+1\ge 9$. As a byproduct we obtain, in those last dimensions, polyhomogeneity at null infinity of small data solutions of vacuum Einstein, or Einstein-Maxwell equations evolving out of initial data which are stationary outside of a ball.

The Cauchy problem on a characteristic cone for the Einstein equations in arbitrary dimensions

We derive explicit formulae for a set of constraints for the Einstein equations on a null hypersurface, in arbitrary dimensions. We solve these constraints and show that they provide necessary and sufficient conditions so that a spacetime solution of the Cauchy problem on a characteristic cone for the hyperbolic system of the reduced Einstein equations in wave-map gauge also satisfies the full Einstein equations. We prove a geometric uniqueness theorem for this Cauchy problem in the vacuum case.

The classification of static vacuum space-times containing an asymptotically flat spacelike hypersurface with compact interior

We prove non-existence of static, vacuum, appropriately regular, asymptotically flat black hole space-times with degenerate (not necessarily connected) components of the event horizon. This finishes the classification of static, vacuum, asymptotically flat domains of outer communication in an appropriate class of space-times, showing that the domains of outer communication of the Schwarzschild black holes exhaust the space of appropriately regular black hole exteriors.
