Dynamical properties of magnetic topological insulator $T$Bi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$ ($T=$Mn, Fe): phonons dispersion, Raman active modes, and chiral phonons study

Recently discovered magnetic topological insulators $T$Bi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$ ($T=$Mn, Fe) crystallize into the $R\bar{3}m$ rhombohedral structure and exhibit the antiferromagnetic order. Here, we discuss the lattice dynamics of these compounds to confirm the stability of these systems. We show that the phonon dispersion does not contain soft modes, so both compounds are dynamically stable in the $R\bar{3}m$ phase. We perform theoretical analyses of the mode activity at $Γ$ point for the discussed compounds. In the case of the Raman active modes, our results are in agreement with the experimentally observed frequencies. Finally, we also discuss the possibility of realization of chiral phonons.

Dynamical Study of the Origin of the Charge Density Wave in $A$V$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ ($A=$K, Rb, Cs) Compounds

Systems containing the ideal kagome lattice can exhibit several distinct and novel exotic states of matter. One example of such systems is a recently discovered $A$V$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ ($A$ = K, Rb, and Cs) family of compounds. Here, the coexistence of the charge density wave (CDW) and superconductivity is observed. In this paper, we study the dynamic properties of the $A$V$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ systems in context of origin of the CDW phase. We show and discuss the structural phase transition from $P6/mmm$ to $C2/m$ symmetry that are induced by the presence of phonon soft modes. We conclude that the CDW observed in this family of compounds is a consequence of the atom displacement, from the high symmetry position of the kagome net, in low-temperature phase. Additionally, using the numerical {\it ab initio} methods, we discuss the charge distribution on the $A$V$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ surface. We show that the observed experimental %$4\times 1$ stripe-like modulation of the surface, can be related to surface reconstruction and manifestation of the three dimensional $2 \times 2 \times 2$ bulk CDW. Finally, the consequence of realization of the $C2/m$ structure on the electronic properties are discussed. We show that the electronic band structure reconstruction and the accompanying modification of density of states correspond well to the experimental data.

Origin of monoclinic distortion and its impact on the electronic properties in KO$_2$

We use the density functional theory and lattice dynamics calculations to investigate the properties of potassium superoxide KO$_2$ in which spin, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom are interrelated and determine the low-temperature phase. After calculating phonon dispersion relations in the high-temperature tetragonal $I4/mmm$ structure, we identify a soft phonon mode leading to the monoclinic $C2/c$ symmetry and optimize the crystal geometry resulting from this mode. Thus we reveal a displacive character of the structural transition with the group-subgroup relation between the tetragonal and monoclinic phases. We compare the electronic structure of KO$_2$ with antiferromagnetic spin order in the tetragonal and monoclinic phases. We emphasize that realistic treatment of the electronic structure requires including the local Coulomb interaction $U$ in the valence orbitals of the O$^-_2$ ions. The presence of the `Hubbard' $U$ leads to the gap opening at the Fermi energy in the tetragonal structure without orbital order but with weak spin-orbit interaction. We remark that the gap opening in the tetragonal phase could also be obtained when the orbital order is initiated in the calculations with a realistic value of $U$. Finally, we show that the local Coulomb interactions and the finite lattice distortion, which together lead to the orbital order via the Jahn-Teller effect, are responsible for the enhanced insulating gap in the monoclinic structure.

Rattling enhanced superconductivity in MV$_2$Al$_{20}$ (M = Sc, Lu, Y) intermetallic cage compounds

Polycrystalline samples of four intermetallic compounds: MV$_2$Al$_{20}$ (M = Sc, Y, La, and Lu) were synthesized using an arc-melting technique. The crystal structures were analyzed by means of powder x-ray diffraction and Rietveld analysis, and the physical properties were studied by means of heat capacity, electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements down to 0.4 K. For ScV$_2$Al$_{20}$, LuV$_2$Al$_{20}$, and YV$_2$Al$_{20}$, superconductivity was observed with critical temperatures T$_c$ = 1.00 K, 0.57 K, and 0.60 K, respectively. Superconductivity for the Lu compound is reported for the first time. Theoretical calculations of the electronic and phonon structures were conducted in order to analyze the superconductivity and dynamics in ScV$_2$Al$_{20}$, YV$_2$Al$_{20}$, and LuV$_2$Al$_{20}$ and to explain the lack of a superconducting transition in LaV$_2$Al$_{20}$ down to 0.4 K. The results of the experimental and theoretical studies show that all the compounds are weakly-coupled type II BCS superconductors, and reveal the importance of the M-atom anharmonic "rattling" modes for the superconductivity in these materials, which seem to enhance T$_c$, especially for ScV$_2$Al$_{20}$.

TiC lattice dynamics from ab initio calculations

Ab initio calculations and a direct method have been applied to derive the phonon dispersion curves and phonon density of states for the TiC crystal. The results are compared and found to be in a good agreement with the experimental neutron scattering data. The force constants have been determined from the Hellmann-Feynman forces induced by atomic displacements in the 2x2x2 supercell. The calculated phonon density of states suggests that vibrations of Ti atoms form acoustic branches, whereas the motion of C atoms is confined to optic branches. The elastic constants have been found using the deformation method and compared with the results obtained from acoustic phonon slopes.

Structure and elastic properties of Mg(OH)$_2$ from density functional theory

The structure, lattice dynamics and mechanical properties of the magnesium hydroxide have been investigated with static density functional theory calculations as well as \it {ab initio} molecular dynamics. The hypothesis of a superstructure existing in the lattice formed by the hydrogen atoms has been tested. The elastic constants of the material have been calculated with static deformations approach and are in fair agreement with the experimental data. The hydrogen subsystem structure exhibits signs of disordered behaviour while maintaining correlations between angular positions of neighbouring atoms. We establish that the essential angular correlations between hydrogen positions are maintained to the temperature of at least 150 K and show that they are well described by a physically motivated probabilistic model. The rotational degree of freedom appears to be decoupled from the lattice directions above 30K.
