Connection between the semiconductor--superconductor transition and the spin-polarized superconducting phase in the honeycomb lattice

The band structure of noninteracting fermions in the honeycomb lattice exhibits the Dirac cones at the corners of the Brillouin zone. As a consequence, fermions in this lattice manifest a semiconducting behavior below some critical value of the onsite attraction, $U_{c}$. However, above $U_{c}$, the superconducting phase can occur. We discuss an interplay between the semiconductor--superconductor transition and the possibility of realization of the spin-polarized superconductivity (the so-called Sarma phase). We show that the critical interaction can be tuned by the next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) hopping in the absence of the magnetic field. Moreover, a critical value of the NNN hopping exists, defining a range of parameters for which the semiconducting phase can emerge. In the weak coupling limit case, this quantum phase transition occurs for the absolute value of the NNN hopping equal to one third of the hopping between the nearest neighbors. Similarly, in the presence of the magnetic field, the Sarma phase can appear, but only in a range of parameters for which initially the semiconducting state is observed. Both of these aspects are attributed to the Lifshitz transition, which is induced by the NNN hopping as well as the external magnetic field.

Dynamical properties of magnetic topological insulator $T$Bi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$ ($T=$Mn, Fe): phonons dispersion, Raman active modes, and chiral phonons study

Recently discovered magnetic topological insulators $T$Bi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$ ($T=$Mn, Fe) crystallize into the $R\bar{3}m$ rhombohedral structure and exhibit the antiferromagnetic order. Here, we discuss the lattice dynamics of these compounds to confirm the stability of these systems. We show that the phonon dispersion does not contain soft modes, so both compounds are dynamically stable in the $R\bar{3}m$ phase. We perform theoretical analyses of the mode activity at $Γ$ point for the discussed compounds. In the case of the Raman active modes, our results are in agreement with the experimentally observed frequencies. Finally, we also discuss the possibility of realization of chiral phonons.

Shiba states in systems with density of states singularities

Magnetic impurities placed in the superconductor can lead to emergence of the Yu-Shiba-Rusinov bound states. Coupling between the impurity and the substrate depends on density of states (DOS) at the Fermi level and can be tuned by DOS singularities. In this paper, we study the role of DOS singularities using the real space Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations for chosen lattice models. To uncover the role of these singularities (Dirac point, van Hove singularity, or the flat band), we study honeycomb, kagome, and Lieb lattices. We show that the properties of the Shiba state strongly depends on the type of lattice. Nevertheless some behaviors are generic, e.g. dependence of the critical magnetic coupling on the DOS at the Fermi level. However, the Shiba states realized in the Lieb lattice exhibit extraordinary properties, which can be explained by the presence of a few nonequivalent sublattices. Depending on the location of the magnetic impurity in the chosen sublattice, the value of critical magnetic coupling $J_\text{c}$ can be reduced or enhanced when the flat band is located at the Fermi level. In this context, we also present differences in the local DOS and coherence lengths for different sublattices in the Lieb lattice.

Dynamical Study of the Origin of the Charge Density Wave in $A$V$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ ($A=$K, Rb, Cs) Compounds

Systems containing the ideal kagome lattice can exhibit several distinct and novel exotic states of matter. One example of such systems is a recently discovered $A$V$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ ($A$ = K, Rb, and Cs) family of compounds. Here, the coexistence of the charge density wave (CDW) and superconductivity is observed. In this paper, we study the dynamic properties of the $A$V$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ systems in context of origin of the CDW phase. We show and discuss the structural phase transition from $P6/mmm$ to $C2/m$ symmetry that are induced by the presence of phonon soft modes. We conclude that the CDW observed in this family of compounds is a consequence of the atom displacement, from the high symmetry position of the kagome net, in low-temperature phase. Additionally, using the numerical {\it ab initio} methods, we discuss the charge distribution on the $A$V$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ surface. We show that the observed experimental %$4\times 1$ stripe-like modulation of the surface, can be related to surface reconstruction and manifestation of the three dimensional $2 \times 2 \times 2$ bulk CDW. Finally, the consequence of realization of the $C2/m$ structure on the electronic properties are discussed. We show that the electronic band structure reconstruction and the accompanying modification of density of states correspond well to the experimental data.

Majorana bound states in a superconducting Rashba nanowire in the presence of antiferromagnetic order

Theoretical studies have shown that Majorana bound states can be induced at the ends of a one dimensional wire, a phenomenon possible due to the interplay between s-wave superconductivity, spin-orbit coupling, and an external magnetic field. These states have been observed in superconductor-semiconductor hybrid nanostructures in the presence of a Zeeman field, and in the limit of a low density of particles. In this paper, we demonstrate and discuss the possibility of the emergence of Majorana bound states in a superconducting Rashba nanowire deposited on an antiferromagnetically ordered surface. We calculate the relevant topological invariant in several complementary ways. Studying the topological phase diagram reveals two branches of the non trivial topological phase -- a main branch, which is typical for Rashba nanowires, and an additional branch emerging due to the antiferromagnetic order. In the case of the additional topological branch, Majorana bound states can also exist close to half-filling, obviating the need for either doping or gating the nanowire to reach the low density regime. Moreover, we show the emergence of the Majorana bound states in the absence of the external magnetic field, which is possible due to the antiferromagnetic order. We also discuss the properties of the bound states in the context of real space localization and the spectral function of the system. This allows one to perceive the band inversion within the spin and sublattice subspaces in the additional branch, contrary to the main branch, where the only band inversion reported in previous studies exists in the spin subspace. Finally, we demonstrate how these topological phases can be confirmed experimentally in transport measurements.

First principles study of topological phase in chains of $3d$ transition metals

Recent experiments have shown the signatures of Majorana bound states at the ends of magnetic chains deposited on a superconducting substrate. Here, we employ first principles calculations to directly investigate the topological properties of $3d$ transition metal nanochains (i.e., Mn, Cr, Fe and Co). In contrast to the previous studies [Nadj-Perge et al. Science 346, 602 (2014) and Ruby et al. Nano Lett. 17, 4473 (2017)], we found the exact tight binding models in the Wannier orbital basis for the isolated chains as well as for the surface--deposited wires. Based on these models, we calculate topological invariant of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ phase for all systems. Our results for the isolated chains demonstrate the existence of the topological phase only in the Mn and Co systems. We considered also a non-collinear magnetic order as a source of the non--trivial topological phase and found that this type of magnetic order is not a stable ground state in the Fe and Co isolated chains. Further studies showed that a coupling between the chain and substrate leads to strong modification of the band structure. Moreover, the analysis of the topological invariant indicates a possibility of emergence of the topological phase in all studied nanochains deposited on the Pb surface. Therefore, our results demonstrate an important role of the coupling between deposited atoms and a substrate for topological properties of nanosystems.

Low-Temperature Phase of the Cd$_2$Re$_2$O$_7$ Superconductor: Ab initio Phonon Calculations and Raman Scattering

Using an {\it ab initio} approach, we report a phonon soft mode in the tetragonal structure described by the space group $I4_{1}22$ of the $1$ K $5d$ superconductor Cd$_2$Re$_2$O$_7$. It induces an orthorhombic distortion to a crystal structure described by the space group $F222$ which hosts the superconducting state. This new phase has a lower total energy than the other known crystal structures of Cd$_2$Re$_2$O$_7$. Comprehensive temperature dependent Raman scattering experiments on isotope enriched samples, $^{116}$Cd$_2$Re$_2{^{18}}$O$_7$, not only confirm the already known structural phase transitions but also allow us to identify a new characteristic temperature regime around $\sim 80$ K, below which the Raman spectra undergo remarkable changes with the development of several sharp modes and mode splitting. Together with the results of the \textit{ab initio} phonon calculations we take these observations as strong evidence for another phase transition to a novel low-temperature crystal structure of Cd$_2$Re$_2$O$_7$.

Origin of monoclinic distortion and its impact on the electronic properties in KO$_2$

We use the density functional theory and lattice dynamics calculations to investigate the properties of potassium superoxide KO$_2$ in which spin, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom are interrelated and determine the low-temperature phase. After calculating phonon dispersion relations in the high-temperature tetragonal $I4/mmm$ structure, we identify a soft phonon mode leading to the monoclinic $C2/c$ symmetry and optimize the crystal geometry resulting from this mode. Thus we reveal a displacive character of the structural transition with the group-subgroup relation between the tetragonal and monoclinic phases. We compare the electronic structure of KO$_2$ with antiferromagnetic spin order in the tetragonal and monoclinic phases. We emphasize that realistic treatment of the electronic structure requires including the local Coulomb interaction $U$ in the valence orbitals of the O$^-_2$ ions. The presence of the `Hubbard' $U$ leads to the gap opening at the Fermi energy in the tetragonal structure without orbital order but with weak spin-orbit interaction. We remark that the gap opening in the tetragonal phase could also be obtained when the orbital order is initiated in the calculations with a realistic value of $U$. Finally, we show that the local Coulomb interactions and the finite lattice distortion, which together lead to the orbital order via the Jahn-Teller effect, are responsible for the enhanced insulating gap in the monoclinic structure.

GPU-based acceleration of free energy calculations in solid state physics

Obtaining a thermodynamically accurate phase diagram through numerical calculations is a computationally expensive problem that is crucially important to understanding the complex phenomena of solid state physics, such as superconductivity. In this work we show how this type of analysis can be significantly accelerated through the use of modern GPUs. We illustrate this with a concrete example of free energy calculation in multi-band iron-based superconductors, known to exhibit a superconducting state with oscillating order parameter. Our approach can also be used for classical BCS-type superconductors. With a customized algorithm and compiler tuning we are able to achieve a 19x speedup compared to the CPU (119x compared to a single CPU core), reducing calculation time from minutes to mere seconds, enabling the analysis of larger systems and the elimination of finite size effects.

Multiple phase transitions in Pauli limited iron-based superconductors

Specific heat measurements have been successfully used to probe unconventional superconducting phases in one-band heavy-fermion and organic superconductors. We extend the method to study successive phase transitions in multi-band materials such as iron based superconductors. The signatures are multiple peaks in the specific heat, at low temperatures and high magnetic field, which can lead the experimental verification of unconventional superconducting states with non-zero total momentum.

Phase separation of superconducting phases in the Penson-Kolb-Hubbard model

In this paper we determine the phase diagrams (for $T=0$ as well as $T>0$) of the Penson-Kolb-Hubbard model for two dimensional square lattice within Hartree-Fock mean-field theory focusing on investigation of superconducting phases and possibility of the occurrence of the phase separation. We obtain that the phase separation, which is a state of coexistence of two different superconducting phases (with $s$-wave and $η$-wave symmetries), occurs in define range of the electron concentration. In addition, increasing temperature can change the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter (from $η$-wave into $s$-wave). The system considered exhibits also an interesting multicritical behaviour including bicritical points.

Probe-type of superconductivity by impurity in materials with short coherence length: the s-wave and $η$-wave phases study

The effects of a single non-magnetic impurity on superconducting states in the Penson-Kolb-Hubbard model have been analyzed. The investigations have been performed within two steps: (i) the homogeneous system is analysed using the Bogoliubov transformation, whereas (ii) the inhomogeneous system is investigated self-consistent Bogoliubova-de Gennes equations (by exact diagonalization and the kernel polynomial method). We analysed both signs of pair hopping, which correspond to s-wave and $η$-wave superconductivity. Our results show that an enhancement of the local superconducting gap at the impurity-site occurs for both cases. We obtained that Cooper pairs are scattered (at the impurity site) into the states which are from the neighborhoods of the states, which are commensurate ones with the crystal lattice. Additionally, in the $η$-phase there are peaks in the local-energy gap (in momentum space), which are connected with long-range oscillations in the spatial distribution of the energy gap, superconducting order parameter as well as effective pairing potential. Our results can be contrasted with the experiment and predicts how to experimentally differentiate these two different symmetries of superconducting order parameter by scanning tunneling microscopy technique.

Unconventional superconductivity in iron-base superconductors in a three-band model

Iron-base superconductors exhibits features of systems where the Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase, a superconducting state with non-zero total momentum of Cooper pairs, is actively sought. Experimental and theoretical evidence points strongly to the FFLO phase in these materials above the Pauli limit. In this article we discuss the ground state of iron-base superconductors near the critical magnetic field and the full $h-T$ phase diagram for pnictides in case of intra-band pairing, in a three-band model with $s_{\pm}$ symmetry.

Influence of $s_{\pm}$ symmetry on unconventional superconductivity in pnictides above the Pauli limit -- two-band model study

The theoretical analysis of the Cooper pair susceptibility shows the two-band Fe-based superconductors (FeSC) to support the existence of the phase with nonzero Cooper pair momentum (called the Fulde--Ferrel--Larkin--Ovchinnikov phase or shortly FFLO), regardless of the order parameter symmetry. Moreover this phase for the FeSC model with $s_{\pm}$ symmetry is the ground state of the system near the Pauli limit. This article discusses the phase diagram $h-T$ for FeSC in the two-band model and its physical consequences. We compare the results for the superconducting order parameter with s-wave and $s_{\pm}$-wave symmetry -- in first case the FFLO phase can occur in both bands, while in second case only in one band. We analyze the resulting order parameter in real space -- showing that the FeSC with $s_{\pm}$-wave symmetry in the Pauli limit have typical properties of one-band systems, such as oscillations of the order parameter in real space with constant amplitude, whereas with s-wave symmetry the oscillations have an amplitude modulation. Discussing the free energy in the superconducting state we show that in absence of orbital effects, the phase transition from the BCS to the FFLO state is always first order, whereas from the FFLO phase to normal state is second order.

The Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state in pnictides

Fe-based superconductors (FeSC) exhibit all the properties of systems that allow the formation of a superconducting phase with oscillating order parameter, called the Fulde--Ferrell--Larkin--Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase. By the analysis of the Cooper pair susceptibility in two-band FeSC, such systems are shown to support the existence of a FFLO phase, regardless of the exhibited order parameter symmetry. We also show the state with nonzero Cooper pair momentum, in superconducting FeSC with $\sim \cos(k_{x}) \cdot \cos (k_{y})$ symmetry, to be the ground state of the system in a certain parameter range.

Coexistence of superconductivity and incommensurate magnetic order

The influence of incommensurate spin density waves (SDW) on superconductivity in unconventional superconductors is studied by means of the Bogolubov-de Gennes (BdG) equations. Exploiting translational symmetries of a magnetically ordered two-dimensional system we propose an approach that allows to solve the BdG equations on much larger clusters than it is usually possible for inhomogeneous systems. Applying this approach we demonstrate that the presence of incommensurate spin density waves induces real-space inhomogeneity of the superconducting order parameter even in the absence of external magnetic field. In this case a homogeneous order parameter of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer-type superconducting state is slightly modulated, or equivalently, a small fraction of the charge carriers form Cooper pairs with non-zero total momentum. However, when a sufficiently strong magnetic field is applied, the homogeneous component of the order parameter is suppressed and the system transits to the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state, where the order parameter oscillates changing sign. We show that for s-wave pairing the presence of external magnetic field diminishes the destructive influence of the SDW order on superconductivity. A simple explanation of this effect is also proposed.
