A search for feebly-interacting particles in BB decays with missing energy at Belle

We present a search for an invisible hidden-sector particle Xinv X_{\rm{inv}}, produced in B0→Dˉ0XinvB^0 \to \bar{D}^0 X_{\rm{inv}} and B±→hXinvB^\pm\to h X_{\rm{inv}} decays, where h=π±h = π^\pm, K±K^\pm, Ds±D_{s}^\pm, p±p^\pm. The search is performed using e+e−e^+ e^- collision data recorded with the Belle detector, corresponding to 711~fb−1^{-1}. No significant signal is observed. We set 90\% confidence level upper limits ranging between 10−410^{-4} and 10−610^{-6} on the branching fraction B(B→hXinv)\mathcal{B}(B \to h X_{\rm{inv}}) as a function of mXinvm_{ X_{\rm{inv}}}. Corresponding limits are set on B(B→hX)×B(X→γγ)\mathcal{B}(B \to hX)\times\mathcal{B}(X\toγγ) for lifetimes cτXcτ_X between 10 μ10~μm and 10 m. Many of these limits are the first direct constraints on their respective decays. Our results provide the most stringent exclusion limits to date on the branching fractions for all search channels, and exclude previously unexplored regions of parameter space relevant to several new physics models.

Search for an Axion-Like Particle in B→K(∗)a(→γγ)B\rightarrow K^{(*)} a (\rightarrowγγ) Decays at Belle

We report a search for an axion-like particle aa in B→K(∗)a(→γγ)B\rightarrow K^{(*)} a (\rightarrowγγ) decays using data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy electron-positron collider. The search is based on a 711fb−1711 \mathrm{fb^{-1}} data sample collected at the Υ4SΥ4S resonance energy, corresponding to a sample of 772×106772\times10^6 Υ4SΥ4S events. In this study, we search for the decay of the axion-like particle into a pair of photons, a→γγa \rightarrow γγ. We scan the two-photon invariant mass in the range 0.16 GeV/c2−4.50 GeV/c20.16\ \mathrm{GeV/}c^2-4.50\ \mathrm{GeV}/c^2 for the KK modes and 0.16 GeV/c2−4.20 GeV/c20.16\ \mathrm{GeV/}c^2-4.20\ \mathrm{GeV}/c^2 for the K∗K^{*} modes. No significant signal is observed in any of the modes, and 90\% confidence level upper limits are established on the coupling to the WW boson, gaWg_aW, as a function of aa mass. The limits range from 3×10−6GeV−13 \times 10^{-6} \mathrm{GeV}^{-1} to 3×10−5GeV−13 \times 10^{-5} \mathrm{GeV}^{-1}, improving the current constraints on gaWg_aW by a factor of two over the most stringent previous experimental results.

Measurement of branching fractions and direct CPCP asymmetries for B→KπB \to Kπ and B→ππB\toππ decays at Belle II

We report measurements of the branching fractions and direct CP\it{CP} asymmetries of the decays B0→K+π−B^0 \to K^+ π^-, B+→K+π0B^+ \to K^+ π^0, B+→K0π+B^+ \to K^0 π^+, and B0→K0π0B^0 \to K^0 π^0, and use these for testing the standard model through an isospin-based sum rule. In addition, we measure the branching fraction and direct CP\it{CP} asymmetry of the decay B+→π+π0B^+ \to π^+π^0 and the branching fraction of the decay B0→π+π−B^0 \to π^+π^-. The data are collected with the Belle II detector from e+e−e^+e^- collisions at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance produced by the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy collider and contain 387×106387\times 10^6 bottom-antibottom meson pairs. Signal yields are determined in two-dimensional fits to background-discriminating variables, and range from 500 to 3900 decays, depending on the channel. We obtain −0.03±0.13±0.04-0.03 \pm 0.13 \pm 0.04 for the sum rule, in agreement with the standard model expectation of zero and with a precision comparable to the best existing determinations.

Measurement of the B0→D∗−ℓ+νℓB^{0} \rightarrow D^{*-} \ell^{+} ν_{\ell} branching ratio and ∣Vcb∣|V_{cb}| with a fully reconstructed accompanying BB meson in 2019-2021 Belle II data

We present a measurement of the B0→D∗−ℓ+νℓB^{0} \rightarrow D^{*-} \ell^{+} ν_{\ell} (ℓ=e,μ\ell=e,μ) branching ratio and of the CKM parameter ∣Vcb∣|V_{cb}| using signal decays accompanied by a fully reconstructed BB meson. The Belle II data set of electron-positron collisions at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance, corresponding to 189.3 \,fb−1^{-1} of integrated luminosity, is analyzed. With the Caprini-Lellouch-Neubert form factor parameterization, the parameters ηEWF(1)∣Vcb∣η_{\rm EW} F(1) |V_{cb}| and ρ2ρ^{2} are extracted, where ηEWη_{\rm EW} is an electroweak correction, F(1)F(1) is a normalization factor and ρ2ρ^{2} is a form factor shape parameter. We reconstruct 516 signal decays and thereby obtain B(B0→D∗−ℓ+νℓ)=(5.27±0.22 (stat)±0.38 (syst))%\mathcal{B} (B^{0} \rightarrow D^{*-} \ell^{+} ν_{\ell} ) = \left(5.27 \pm 0.22~\rm{\left(stat\right)} \pm 0.38~\rm{\left(syst\right)}\right) \%, ηEWF(1)∣Vcb∣×103=34.6±1.8 (stat)±1.7 (syst)η_{EW} F(1) |V_{cb}| \times 10^{3} = 34.6 \pm 1.8~\rm{\left(stat\right)} \pm 1.7~\rm{\left(syst\right)}, and ρ2=0.94±0.18 (stat)±0.11 (syst)ρ^{2} = 0.94 \pm 0.18~\rm{\left(stat\right)} \pm 0.11~\rm{\left(syst\right)}.

A New Charged Lepton Flavor Violation Program at Fermilab

The muon has played a central role in establishing the Standard Model of particle physics, and continues to provide valuable information about the nature of new physics. A new complex at Fermilab, the Advanced Muon Facility, would provide the world's most intense positive and negative muon beams by exploiting the full potential of PIP-II and the Booster upgrade. This facility would enable a broad muon physics program, including studies of charged lepton flavor violation, muonium-antimuonium transitions, a storage ring muon EDM experiment, and muon spin rotation experiments. This document describes a staged realization of this complex, together with a series of next-generation experiments to search for charged lepton flavor violation.

An improved search for the electric dipole moment of the ττ lepton

We report a measurement of the electric dipole moment of the ττ lepton (dτd_τ) using an 833~fb−1^{-1} data sample collected near the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance, with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+ e^- collider. Using an optimal observable method, we obtain the real and imaginary parts of dτd_τ as Re(dτ)=(−0.62±0.63)×10−17 ecm{\rm Re}(d_τ) = ( -0.62 \pm 0.63 ) \times 10^{-17} ~e{\rm cm} and Im(dτ)=(−0.40±0.32)×10−17 ecm{\rm Im}(d_τ) = ( -0.40 \pm 0.32 ) \times 10^{-17} ~e{\rm cm}, respectively. These results are consistent with null electric dipole moment at the present level of experimental sensitivity and improve the sensitivity by about a factor of three.

Application of recoil-imaging time projection chambers to directional neutron background measurements in the SuperKEKB accelerator tunnel

Gaseous time projection chambers (TPCs) with high readout segmentation are capable of reconstructing detailed 3D ionization distributions of nuclear recoils resulting from elastic neutron scattering. Using a system of six compact TPCs with pixel ASIC readout, filled with a 70:30 mixture of He:CO2_2 gas, we analyze the first directional measurements of beam-induced neutron backgrounds in the tunnel regions surrounding the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB e+e−e^+e^- collider. With the use of 3D recoil tracking, we show that these TPCs are capable of maintaining nearly 100%100\% nuclear recoil purity to reconstructed ionization energies (ErecoE_\text{reco}) as low as 5 keVee\mathrm{keV_\text{ee}}. Using a large sample of simulated 4^4He, 12^{12}C, and 16^{16}O recoil tracks, we find consistency between predicted and measured recoil energy spectra in five of the six TPCs, providing useful validation of the neutron production mechanisms modeled in simulation. Restricting this sample to 4^4He recoil tracks with Ereco>40E_\text{reco}>40 keVee\mathrm{keV_\text{ee}}, we demonstrate axial angular resolutions within 8∘8^{\circ} and we introduce a procedure that under suitable conditions, correctly assigns the vector direction to 91%91\% of simulated 4^4He recoils. Applying this procedure to assign vector directions to measured 4^4He recoil tracks, we observe consistency between the angular distributions of observed and simulated recoils, providing first experimental evidence of localized neutron "hotspots" in the accelerator tunnel. Observed rates of nuclear recoils in these TPCs suggest that simulation overestimates the neutron flux from these hotspots.

First test of Lepton Flavor Universality in the charmed baryon decays Ωc0→Ω−ℓ+νℓΩ^{0}_{c} \to Ω^{-} \ell^{+} ν_{\ell} using data of the Belle experiment

We present the first observation of the Ωc0→Ω−μ+νμΩ_{c}^{0} \to Ω^{-} μ^{+} ν_μ decay and present measurements of the branching fraction ratios of the Ωc0→Ω−ℓ+νℓΩ_{c}^{0} \to Ω^{-} \ell^{+} ν_{\ell} decays compared to the reference mode Ωc0→Ω−π+Ω_{c}^{0} \to Ω^{-} π^+, (ℓ=e\ell = e or μμ). This analysis is based on 89.5 fb−1^{-1}, 711 fb−1^{-1}, and 121.1 fb−1^{-1} data samples collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+e^- collider at the center-of-mass energies of 10.52 GeV, 10.58 GeV, and 10.86 GeV, respectively. The Ωc0Ω_{c}^{0} signal yields are extracted by fitting MΩ−ℓ+M_{Ω^{-} \ell^{+}} and MΩ−π+M_{Ω^{-}π^+} spectra. The measurement of ACP{\cal A}_{CP} for B0→Dˉ0π0B^{0}\to \bar{D}^{0}π^{0} is the first for this mode, and the value is consistent with Standard Model expectations.

The branching fractions of the decays B+→ηℓ+νℓB^{+} \to η\ell^{+} ν_{\ell} and B+→η′ℓ+νℓB^{+} \to η^{\prime} \ell^{+} ν_{\ell} are measured, where ℓ\ell is either an electron or a muon, using a data sample of 711 fb−1711\,{\rm fb}^{-1} containing 772×106BBˉ772 \times 10^6 B\bar{B} pairs collected at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+ e^- collider. To reduce the dependence of the result on the form factor model, the measurement is performed over the entire q2q^2 range. Mu2e-II: Muon to electron conversion with PIP-II

An observation of Charged Lepton Flavor Violation (CLFV) would be unambiguous evidence for physics beyond the Standard Model. The Mu2e and COMET experiments, under construction, are designed to push the sensitivity to CLFV in the mu to e conversion process to unprecedented levels. Whether conversion is observed or not, there is a strong case to be made for further improving sensitivity, or for examining the process on additional target materials. Mu2e-II is a proposed upgrade to Mu2e, with at least an additional order of magnitude in sensitivity to the conversion rate over Mu2e. The approach and challenges for this proposal are summarized. Mu2e-II may be regarded as the next logical step in a continued high-intensity muon program at FNAL.

Novel Sensors for Particle Tracking: a Contribution to the Snowmass Community Planning Exercise of 2021

Five contemporary technologies are discussed in the context of their potential roles in particle tracking for future high energy physics applications. These include sensors of the 3D configuration, in both diamond and silicon, submicron-dimension pixels, thin film detectors, and scintillating quantum dots in gallium arsenide. Drivers of the technologies include radiation hardness, excellent position, vertex, and timing resolution, simplified integration, and optimized power, cost, and material.

Primary track recovery in high-definition gas time projection chambers

We develop and validate a new algorithm called \textit{primary track recovery} (\ptr) that effectively deconvolves known physics and detector effects from nuclear recoil tracks in gas time projection chambers (TPCs) with high-resolution readout. This gives access to the primary track charge, length, and vector direction (helping to resolve the "head-tail" ambiguity). Additionally, \ptr provides a measurement of the transverse and longitudinal diffusion widths, which can be used to determine the absolute position of tracks in the drift direction for detector fiducialization. Using simulated helium recoils in an atmospheric pressure TPC with a 70:30 mixture of He:CO2_2 we compare the performance of \ptr to traditional methods for all key track variables. We find that the algorithm reduces reconstruction errors, including those caused by charge integration, for tracks with mean length-to-width ratios 1.4 and above, corresponding to recoil energies of 2020 keV and above in the studied TPCs. We show that \ptr improves on existing methods for head-tail disambiguation, particularly for highly inclined tracks, and improves the determination of the absolute position of recoils on the drift axis via transverse diffusion. We find that \ptr can partially recover charge structure integrated out by the detector in the zz direction, but that its determination of energy and length have worse resolution compared to existing methods. We use experimental data to qualitatively verify these findings and discuss implications for future directional detectors at the low-energy frontier.

Search for a light Higgs boson in single-photon decays of Υ(1S)Υ(1S) using Υ(2S)→π+π−Υ(1S)Υ(2S) \to π^+ π^- Υ(1S) tagging method

We search for a light Higgs boson (A0A^0) decaying into a τ+τ−τ^+τ^- or μ+μ−μ^+μ^- pair in the radiative decays of Υ(1S)Υ(1S). The production of Υ(1S)Υ(1S) mesons is tagged by Υ(2S)→π+π−Υ(1S)Υ(2S)\to π^+ π^- Υ(1S) transitions, using 158 million Υ(2S)Υ(2S) events accumulated with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy electron-positron collider. No significant A0A^0 signals in the mass range from the τ+τ−τ^+τ^- or μ+μ−μ^+μ^- threshold to 9.2 GeV/c2c^2 are observed. We set the upper limits at 90\% credibility level (C.L.) on the product branching fractions for Υ(1S)→γA0Υ(1S)\to γA^0 and A0→τ+τ−A^0\to τ^+τ^- varying from 3.8×10−63.8\times10^{-6} to 1.5×10−41.5\times10^{-4}. Our results represent an approximately twofold improvement on the current world best upper limits for the Υ(1S)→γA0(→τ+τ−)Υ(1S)\to γA^0(\to τ^+τ^-) production. For A0→μ+μ−A^0\to μ^+μ^-, the upper limits on the product branching fractions for Υ(1S)→γA0Υ(1S)\to γA^0 and A0→μ+μ−A^0\to μ^+μ^- are at the same level as the world average limits, and vary from 3.1×10−73.1\times10^{-7} to 1.6×10−51.6\times10^{-5}. Using 980 fb−1980~\rm fb^{-1} of data on and around the Υ(nS)(n=1,2,3,4,5)Υ(nS)(n=1,2,3,4,5) resonances collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+e^- collider, the two-photon process γγ→γψ(2S)γγ\to γψ(2S) is studied from the threshold to 4.2 GeV4.2~{\rm GeV} for the first time. Two structures are seen in the invariant mass distribution of γψ(2S)γψ(2S): one at MR1=3922.4±6.5±2.0 MeV/c2M_{R_1} = 3922.4\pm 6.5 \pm 2.0~{\rm MeV}/c^2 with a width of ΓR1=22±17±4 MeVΓ_{R_1} = 22\pm 17\pm 4~{\rm MeV}, and another at MR2=4014.3±4.0±1.5 MeV/c2M_{R_2} = 4014.3\pm 4.0 \pm 1.5~{\rm MeV}/c^2 with a width of ΓR2=4±11±6 MeVΓ_{R_2} = 4\pm 11 \pm 6~{\rm MeV}; the signals are parametrized with the incoherent sum of two Breit-Wigner functions. The first structure is consistent with the X(3915)X(3915) or the χc2(3930)χ_{c2}(3930), and the local statistical significance is determined to be 3.1σ3.1σ with the systematic uncertainties included. The second matches none of the known charmonium or charmoniumlike states, and its global significance is determined to be 2.8σ2.8σ including the look-elsewhere effect. ττ lepton mass measurement at Belle II

The reconstruction of tau-pair production, e+e−→τ+τ−e^{+}e^{-} \to τ^{+}τ^{-}, from the subsequent 3-prong (τ+→π+π−π+νˉττ^{+} \rightarrow π^{+} π^{-} π^{+} \barν_τ) and 1-prong (τ−→ℓ−νˉℓνττ^{-} \to \ell^{-} \barν_{\ell} ν_τ, τ−→h−νττ^{-} \to h^{-} ν_τ or τ−→π−π0νττ^{-} \to π^{-} π^0 ν_τ) decays, is presented using 8.8 fb−1^{-1} of e+e−e^{+}e^{-} collision data of Belle II at the center-of-mass energy s=mΥ(4S)\sqrt{s} = m_{Υ(4S)}. The pseudomass technique developed by the ARGUS experiment is used to measure the ττ-lepton mass mτm_τ in the 3-prong τ+→π+π−π+νˉττ^{+} \to π^{+} π^{-} π^{+} \barν_τ decay, resulting in mτ=1777.28±0.75 (stat.)±0.33 (sys.) MeV/c2m_τ = 1777.28 \pm 0.75~{\rm (stat.)} \pm 0.33 ~{\rm (sys.)}~{\rm{MeV}/\rm{c}^2}.

First 3D vector tracking of helium recoils for fast neutron measurements at SuperKEKB

We present results from the first deployment of novel, high definition, compact gas Time Projection Chambers (TPCs) with pixel chip readout as part of the BEAST II beam background measurement project at SuperKEKB. The TPCs provide detailed 3D imaging of ionization from neutron-induced nuclear recoils in a helium and carbon dioxide target gas mixture at standard temperature and pressure. We find excellent electron background rejection, leading to background-free nuclear recoil measurements above 50 keVee, despite the extreme high-background environment. We measure an angular resolution better than 20° for recoil tracks longer than 1.7 mm, corresponding to an average ionization energy of ~100 keVee. We also obtain the 3D vector direction of helium recoils by utilizing charge profile measurements along the recoil axis, with a correct head/tail assignment efficiency of approximately 80%. With this performance, we present comparisons between measured and simulated event rates, recoil energy spectra, and directional distributions originating from beam-gas and Touschek beam losses at SuperKEKB. We utilize head/tail recognition to distinguish neutron components travelling with positive radial velocity in the Belle II coordinate system from those with opposite directionality. Finally, we present a novel method of discriminating beam-gas interactions from Touschek beam losses that can eliminate the need for dedicated accelerator runs for background measurements. This method is still statistics-limited. However, future studies should be able to verify this method, which in turn could lead to neutron background analysis runs symbiotic with normal Belle II operation. The capabilities demonstrated here also suggest that high definition recoil imaging in gas TPCs is applicable to low energy, low-background experiments, such as directional dark matter searches.

Measurements of the branching fractions of Ξc0→ΛKS0Ξ_c^0 \to ΛK_S^0, Ξc0→Σ0KS0Ξ_c^0 \to Σ^0 K_S^0, and Ξc0→Σ+K−Ξ_c^0 \to Σ^+ K^- decays at Belle

Using the entire data sample of 980 fb−1980\mathrm{~fb}^{-1} collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+e^- collider, we present measurements of the branching fractions of the Cabibbo-favored decays Ξc0→ΛKS0Ξ_c^0 \to ΛK_S^0, Ξc0→Σ0KS0Ξ_c^0 \to Σ^0 K_S^0, and Ξc0→Σ+K−Ξ_c^0 \to Σ^+ K^-. Taking the decay $Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^- \pip$ as the normalization mode, we measure the branching fraction ratio B(Ξc0→ΛKS0)/B(Ξc0→Ξ−π+)=0.229±0.008±0.012{\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to ΛK_S^0)/{\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^- π^+) = 0.229\pm0.008\pm0.012 with improved precision, and measure the branching fraction ratios B(Ξc0→Σ0KS0)/B(Ξc0→Ξ−π+)=0.038±0.006±0.004{\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to Σ^0 K_S^0)/{\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^- π^+) = 0.038\pm0.006\pm0.004 and B(Ξc0→Σ+K−)/B(Ξc0→Ξ−π+)=0.123±0.007±0.010{\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to Σ^+ K^-)/{\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^- π^+) = 0.123\pm0.007\pm0.010 for the first time. Taking into account the branching fraction of the normalization mode, the absolute branching fractions are determined to be B(Ξc0→ΛKS0)=(3.27±0.11±0.17±0.73)×10−3{\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to ΛK_S^0) = (3.27\pm0.11\pm0.17\pm0.73) \times 10^{-3}, B(Ξc0→Σ0KS0)=(0.54±0.09±0.06±0.12)×10−3{\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to Σ^0 K_S^0) = (0.54\pm 0.09\pm 0.06\pm 0.12) \times 10^{-3}, and B(Ξc0→Σ+K−)=(1.76±0.10±0.14±0.39)×10−3{\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to Σ^+ K^-) = (1.76\pm 0.10\pm0.14\pm 0.39) \times 10^{-3}. The first and second uncertainties above are statistical and systematic, respectively, while the third ones arise from the uncertainty of the branching fraction of Ξc0→Ξ−π+Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^- π^+.

Search for lepton-number- and baryon-number-violating tau decays at Belle

We search for lepton-number- and baryon-number-violating decays τ−→p‾e+e−τ^{-}\to\overline{p}e^{+}e^{-}, pe−e−pe^{-}e^{-}, p‾e+μ−\overline{p}e^{+}μ^{-}, p‾e−μ+\overline{p}e^{-}μ^{+}, p‾μ+μ−\overline{p}μ^{+}μ^{-}, and pμ−μ−pμ^{-}μ^{-} using 921 fb−1^{-1} of data, equivalent to (841±12)×106(841\pm12)\times 10^6 τ+τ−τ^{+}τ^{-} events, recorded with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^{+}e^{-} collider. In the absence of a signal, 90%90\% confidence-level upper limits are set on the branching fractions of these decays in the range (1.8(1.8-4.0)×10−84.0)\times 10^{-8}. We set the world's first limits on the first four channels and improve the existing limits by an order of magnitude for the last two channels.

A calibration of the Belle II hadronic tag-side reconstruction algorithm with B→XℓνB \rightarrow X\ell ν decays

Tag-side reconstruction is an important method for reconstructing BB meson decays with missing energy. The Belle II tag-side reconstruction algorithm, Full Event Interpretation, relies on a hierarchical reconstruction of BB meson decays with multivariate classification employed at each stage of reconstruction. Given the large numbers of classifiers employed and decay chains reconstructed, the performance of the algorithm on data and simulation differs significantly. Here, calibration factors are derived for hadronic tag-side BB decays by measuring a signal side decay, B→XℓνB \rightarrow X\ell ν, in 34.634.6 fb−1^{-1} of Belle II data. For a very loose selection on the tag-side BB multivariate classifier, the calibration factors are 0.65±0.020.65 \pm 0.02 and 0.83±0.030.83 \pm 0.03 for tag-side B+B^{+} and B0B^{0} mesons, respectively.

Charmless BB decay reconstruction in 2019 Belle II data

We report on the reconstruction of various charmless BB decays from electron-positron collisions at the energy corresponding to the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider. We use simulation to devise optimized event selections and apply them to the full data set collected in 2019, corresponding to 8.7\,fb−1^{-1} of integrated luminosity. We fit the difference between half of the collision energy and the BB candidate energy (in the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) frame) for events restricted to a signal-rich range in beam-energy-constrained mass to search for charmless signals. Signal yields of approximately 80, 15, 20, 30, 90, and 160 decays are reconstructed for the channels B0→K+π−B^0 \to K^+π^-, B0→π+π−B^0 \to π^+π^-, B+→KS0(→π+π−)π+B^+ \to K^0_S(\to π^+π^-)π^+, B+→K+π0(→γγ)B^+ \to K^+π^0(\to γγ), B+→K+K−K+B^+ \to K^+K^-K^+, and B+→K+π−π+B^+ \to K^+π^-π^+, respectively. Yields and background contaminations are compatible with those expected from simulation and comparable with those obtained by the Belle experiment. The results show a good understanding of the detector performance and offer a reliable basis to assess projections for future reach.

First flavor tagging calibration using 2019 Belle II data

We report on the first calibration of the standard Belle II BB-flavor tagger using the full data set collected at the Υ(4S)Υ(4{\rm S}) resonance in 2019 with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider, corresponding to 8.7 fb−1^{-1} of integrated luminosity. The calibration is performed by reconstructing various hadronic charmed BB-meson decays with flavor-specific final states. We use simulation to optimize our event selection criteria and to train the flavor tagging algorithm. We determine the tagging efficiency and the fraction of wrongly identified tag-side BB~candidates from a measurement of the time-integrated B0−B‾0B^0-\overline{B}^0 mixing probability. The total effective efficiency is measured to be εeff=(33.8±3.6(stat)±1.6(sys))%\varepsilon_{\rm eff} = \big(33.8 \pm 3.6(\text{stat}) \pm 1.6(\text{sys})\big)\%, which is in good agreement with the predictions from simulation and comparable with the best one obtained by the Belle experiment. The results show a good understanding of the detector performance and offer a basis for future calibrations.

Measurement of Hadronic Mass Moments ⟨MXn⟩\langle M_X^n \rangle in B→XcℓνB \rightarrow X_c \ell ν Decays at Belle II

We present measurements of the first six hadronic mass moments in semileptonic B→XcℓνB \rightarrow X_c \ell ν decays. The hadronic mass moments, together with other observables of inclusive BB decays, can be used to determine the CKM matrix element ∣Vcb∣|{V_{cb}}| and mass of the bb-quark mbm_b in the context of Heavy Quark Expansions of QCD. The Belle~II data recorded at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance in 2019 and 2020 (March-July), corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 34.6  fb−134.6\;\mathrm{fb}^{-1}, is used for this measurement. The decay Υ(4S)→BB‾Υ(4S) \rightarrow B \overline{B} is reconstructed by applying the hadronic tagging algorithm provided by the Full Event Interpretation to fully reconstruct one BB meson. The second BB meson is reconstructed inclusively by selecting a high-momentum lepton. The XcX_c system is identified by the remaining reconstructed tracks and clusters in the electromagnetic calorimeter. We report preliminary results for the hadronic mass moments ⟨MXn⟩\langle M_X^n \rangle with n=1,…,6n=1,\dots,6, measured as a function of a lower cut on the lepton momentum in the signal BB rest frame.

Measurement of the B0B^0 lifetime using fully reconstructed hadronic decays in the 2019 Belle II dataset

This document presents the measurement of B0B^0 meson lifetimes using the 2019 Belle II dataset that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 8.7±0.28.7 \pm 0.2 fb−1^{-1}. Each candidate is fully reconstructed with hadronic decay final states on the signal side, while the rest-of-event technique allows to infer the decay vertex position on the other (tag) side. B0B^0 lifetime is extracted from an unbinned maximum likelihood fit to the distribution of the difference between the signal side B0B^0 candidate and the tag side decay times. The measured lifetime is τB0=1.48±0.28±0.06τ_{B^0} = 1.48 \pm 0.28 \pm 0.06 ps, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Measurement of two-particle correlations in hadronic e+e−e^{+}e^{-} collisions at Belle

The enhancement of charged-particle pairs with large pseudorapidity difference and small azimuthal angle difference, often referred to as the ``ridge signal'', is a phenomenon widely observed in high multiplicity proton-proton, proton-ion and deutron-ion collisions, which is not yet fully understood. In heavy-ion collisions, the hydrodynamic expansion of the Quark-Gluon Plasma is one of the possible explanations of the origin of the ridge signal. Measurements in the e+e−e^+e^- collision system, without the complexities introduced by hadron structure in the initial state, can serve as a complementary probe to examine the formation of a ridge signal. The first measurement of two-particle angular correlation functions in high multiplicity e+e−e^+e^- collisions at s=10.52\sqrt{s}=10.52 GeV is reported. The hadronic e+e−e^+e^- annihilation data collected by the Belle detector at KEKB are used in this study. Two-particle angular correlation functions are measured over the full azimuth and large pseudorapidity intervals which are defined by either the electron beam axis or the event thrust as a function of charged particle multiplicity. The measurement in the event thrust analysis, with mostly outgoing quark pairs determining the reference axis, is sensitive to the region of additional soft gluon emissions. No significant ridge signal is observed with either coordinates analyses. Near side jet correlations appear to be absent in the thrust axis analysis. The measurements are compared to predictions from various event generators and expected to provide new constraints to the phenomenological models in the low energy regime.

Measurements of branching fractions and CP-violating charge asymmetries in charmless BB decays reconstructed in 2019--2020 Belle~II data

We report on first measurements of branching fractions~(B\mathcal{B}) and CP-violating charge asymmetries~(A\mathcal{A}) in charmless BB decays at Belle~II. We use a sample of electron-positron collisions collected in 2019 and 2020 at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance and corresponding to 34.634.6\,fb−1^{-1} of integrated luminosity. We use simulation to determine optimized event selections. The ΔEΔE distributions of the resulting samples, restricted in MbcM_{\rm bc}, are fit to determine signal yields. Signal yields are corrected for efficiencies determined from simulation and control data samples to obtain branching fractions and CP-violating asymmetries for flavour-specific channels. These are the first measurements in charmless decays reported by Belle~II. Results are compatible with known determinations and show detector performance comparable with the best Belle results offering a reliable basis to assess projections for future reach.

Rediscovery of B→ϕK(∗)B \to ϕK^{(*)} decays and measurement of the longitudinal polarization fraction fLf_L in B→ϕK∗B \to ϕK^{*} decays using the Summer 2020 Belle II dataset

We utilize a sample of 34.6 fb−1^{-1}, collected by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric energy e+e−e^+e^- collider, to search for the B+→ϕK+B^+ \to ϕK^+, B+→ϕK∗+B^+ \to ϕK^{*+}, B0→ϕKS0B^0 \to ϕK^0_S, and B0→ϕK∗0B^0 \to ϕK^{*0} decays. Search for an invisibly decaying Z′Z^{\prime} boson at Belle II in e+e−→μ+μ−(e±μ∓)e^+ e^- \to μ^+ μ^- (e^{\pm} μ^{\mp}) plus missing energy final states

Theories beyond the standard model often predict the existence of an additional neutral boson, the Z′Z^{\prime}. Using data collected by the Belle II experiment during 2018 at the SuperKEKB collider, we perform the first searches for the invisible decay of a Z′Z^{\prime} in the process e+e−→μ+μ−Z′e^+ e^- \to μ^+ μ^- Z^{\prime} and of a lepton-flavor-violating Z′Z^{\prime} in e+e−→e±μ∓Z′e^+ e^- \to e^{\pm} μ^{\mp} Z^{\prime}. We do not find any excess of events and set 90\% credibility level upper limits on the cross sections of these processes. We translate the former, in the framework of an Lμ−LτL_μ-L_τ theory, into upper limits on the Z′Z^{\prime} coupling constant at the level of 5×10−25 \times 10^{-2} -- 11 MZ′≤6M_{Z^\prime}\leq 6 GeV/c2c^2.

Search for the Decay Bs0→η′ηB_s^0 \rightarrow η^\prime η

In the Standard Model (SM) charmless hadronic decays Bs0→η′ηB_s^0 \rightarrow η^\prime η proceed via tree-level b→ub\to u and penguin b→sb\to s transitions. Penguin transitions are sensitive to Beyond-the-Standard-Model (BSM) physics scenarios and could affect the branching fractions and {\it CP} asymmetries in such decays. Once branching fractions for two-body decays Bs→ηη,ηη′,η′η′B_s \to ηη, ηη^{\prime}, η^{\prime}η^{\prime} are measured, and the theoretical uncertainties are reduced, it would be possible to extract {\it CP} violating parameters from the data using the formalism based on SU(3)/U(3) symmetry. To achieve this goal, at least four of these six branching fractions need to be measured. Only the branching fraction for Bs0→η′η′B_s^0 \to η^{\prime}η^{\prime} has been measured so far.

The analysis is performed on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 711 fb−1711~\mathrm{fb}^{-1} containing 772×106772\times 10^{6} BBˉB\bar B pairs, collected at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+e^- collider KEKB. The result is consistent with Standard Model (SM) expectations, where the largest discrepancy from a SM prediction is observed in the muon modes with a local significance of 2.6σ2.6σ.

Measurement of CPCP asymmetry in the D0→KS0KS0D^{0} \to K^0_S K^0_S decay at Belle

We report a measurement of the time-integrated CPCP asymmetry in the neutral charm meson decay D0→KS0KS0D^0 \to K^0_S K^0_S using 921~fb−1^{-1} data collected at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) and Υ(5S)Υ(5S) resonances with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+e^- collider. The observed asymmetry is ACP(D0→KS0KS0)=(−0.02±1.53±0.17)%, A_{CP}(D^0 \to K^0_S K^0_S) = (-0.02 \pm 1.53 \pm 0.17) \%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This latter uncertainty is dominated by the error of the normalisation channel. The result is consistent with Standard Model expectations and improves the uncertainty with respect to previous measurement of this quantity by more than a factor of three.

Measurement of Michel Parameters (ηˉ\barη, ξκξκ) in the radiative leptonic decay of tau at Belle

We present the first measurement of the Michel parameters ηˉ\barη and ξκξκ in the radiative leptonic decay of the ττ lepton using 703 fb−1\mathrm{b}^{-1} of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e−e^+e^- collider. The Michel parameters are measured by an unbinned maximum likelihood fit to the kinematic information of e+e−→τ+τ−→(π+π0νˉ)(l−ννˉγ)e^+e^-\rightarrowτ^+τ^-\rightarrow (π^+π^0 \barν)(l^-ν\barνγ) (l=e(l=e or μ)μ). The preliminary values of the measured Michel parameters are ηˉ=−2.0±1.5±0.8\barη = -2.0 \pm 1.5 \pm 0.8 and ξκ=0.6±0.4±0.2ξκ= 0.6 \pm 0.4 \pm 0.2, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic.

Observation of Transverse Λ/ΛˉΛ/\barΛ Hyperon Polarization in e+e−e^+e^- Annihilation at Belle

We report the first observation of the polarization of Λ/ΛˉΛ/\barΛ hyperons transverse to its production plane in e+e−e^+e^- annihilation. We observe a significant polarization that rises with the fractional energy carried by the hyperon as well as its transverse momentum. To define the production plane, we use the direction of the hyperon momentum together with either the thrust axis in the event or the momentum vector of a hadron in the opposite hemisphere. Furthermore, we investigate the contributions to the hyperon polarization from the feed-down from Σ0/Σˉ0Σ^0/\barΣ^0 and Λc±Λ_c^{\pm} decays. This measurement uses a dataset of 800.4fb−1^{-1} collected by the Belle experiment at or near a center-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV.

Readout technologies for directional WIMP Dark Matter detection

The measurement of the direction of WIMP-induced nuclear recoils is a compelling but technologically challenging strategy to provide an unambiguous signature of the detection of Galactic dark matter. Most directional detectors aim to reconstruct the dark-matter-induced nuclear recoil tracks, either in gas or solid targets. The main challenge with directional detection is the need for high spatial resolution over large volumes, which puts strong requirements on the readout technologies. In this paper we review the various detector readout technologies used by directional detectors. In particular, we summarize the challenges, advantages and drawbacks of each approach, and discuss future prospects for these technologies.

Study of χ_{bJ}(1P) Properties in the Radiative Υ(2S) Decays

We report a study of radiative decays of χ_{bJ}(1P)(J=0,1,2) mesons into 74 hadronic final states comprising charged and neutral pions, kaons, protons; out of these, 41 modes are observed with at least 5 standard deviation significance. Our measurements not only improve the previous measurements by the CLEO Collaboration but also lead to first observations in many new modes. The large sample allows us to probe the total decay width of the χ_{b0}(1P). In the absence of a statistically significant result, a 90% confidence-level upper limit is set on the width at Γ_{total}< 2.4 MeV. Our results are based on 24.7 fb^{-1} of e+e- collision data recorded by the Belle detector at the Υ(2S) resonance, corresponding to (157.8\pm3.6)\times10^6 Υ(2S) decays.

3-D Tracking of Nuclear Recoils in a Miniature Time Projection Chamber

The three-dimensional (3-D) reconstruction of nuclear recoils is of interest for directional detection of fast neutrons and for direction-sensitive searches for weakly interacting massive particles(WIMPs), which may constitute the Dark Matter of the universe. We demonstrate this capability with a miniature gas target Time Projection Chamber (TPC) where the drift charge is avalanche-multiplied with Gas Electron Multipliers (GEMs) and detected with the ATLAS FE-I3 Pixel Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC). We report on performance characterization of the detector, including measurements of gain, gain resolution, point resolution, diffusion, angular resolution, and energy resolution with low-energy x-rays, cosmic rays, and alpha particles, using the gases Ar:CO2_2 (70:30) and He:CO2_2 (70:30) at atmospheric pressure. We discuss the implications for future, larger directional neutron and Dark Matter detectors. With an eye to designing and selecting components for these, we generalize our results into analytical expressions for detector performance whenever possible. We conclude by demonstrating the 3-D directional detection of a fast neutron source.

Absolute Position Measurement in a Gas Time Projection Chamber via Transverse Diffusion of Drift Charge

Time Projection Chambers (TPCs) with charge readout via micro pattern gaseous detectors can provide detailed measurements of charge density distributions. We here report on measurements of alpha particle tracks, using a TPC where the drift charge is amplified with Gas Electron Multipliers and detected with a pixel ASIC. We find that by measuring the 3-D topology of drift charge and fitting for its transverse diffusion, we obtain the absolute position of tracks in the drift direction. For example, we obtain a precision of 1~cm for 1~cm-long alpha track segments. To our knowledge this is the first demonstration of such a measurement in a gas TPC. This technique has several attractive features: it does not require knowledge of the initial specific ionization, is robust against bias from diffuse charge below detection threshold, and is also robust against high charge densities that saturate the detector response.

Charge-Focusing Readout of Time Projection Chambers

Time projection chambers (TPCs) have found a wide range of applications in particle physics, nuclear physics, and homeland security. For TPCs with high-resolution readout, the readout electronics often dominate the price of the final detector. We have developed a novel method which could be used to build large-scale detectors while limiting the necessary readout area. By focusing the drift charge with static electric fields, we would allow a small area of electronics to be sensitive to particle detection for a much larger detector volume. The resulting cost reduction could be important in areas of research which demand large-scale detectors, including dark matter searches and detection of special nuclear material. We present simulations made using the software package Garfield of a focusing structure to be used with a prototype TPC with pixel readout. This design should enable significant focusing while retaining directional sensitivity to incoming particles. We also present first experimental results and compare them with simulation.
