Experimental Search for Neutron to Mirror Neutron Oscillations as an Explanation of the Neutron Lifetime Anomaly

An unexplained $>4\,σ$ discrepancy persists between "beam" and "bottle" measurements of the neutron lifetime. A new model proposed that conversions of neutrons $n$ into mirror neutrons $n'$, part of a dark mirror sector, can increase the apparent neutron lifetime by $1\%$ via a small mass splitting $Δ{m}$ between $n$ and $n'$ inside the 4.6 T magnetic field of the National Institute of Standards and Technology Beam Lifetime experiment. A search for neutron conversions in a 6.6 T magnetic field was performed at the Spallation Neutron Source which excludes this explanation for the neutron lifetime discrepancy.

Composition dependence of electronic, magnetic, transport and morphological properties of mixed valence manganite thin films

We present a comparison of the in-plane length scale over which charge and magnetism are correlated in (La0.4Pr0.6)1-xCaxMnO3 films with x = 0.33 and 0.375, across the metal to insulator transition (MIT) temperature. We combine electrical transport (resistance) measurements, x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), and specular/off-specular x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS) measurements as a function of temperature to elucidate relationships between electronic, magnetic and morphological structure of the thin films. Using off-specular XRMS we obtained the charge-charge and charge-magnetic correlation length of these LPCMO films near the MIT. The charge-magnetic correlation length (~ 12000 Å) for x = 0.33 was much larger (~4 times) than the charge-charge correlation length (~ 3200 Å) at 20 K. Whereas for x = 0.375 the charge-magnetic correlation length (~ 7500 Å) was smaller than the charge-charge correlation length (~ 9000 Å).

Field dependent magnetization of BiFeO3 in ultrathin La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/BiFeO3 superlattice

We report the observation of field-induced magnetization of BiFeO3 (BFO) in an ultrathin BFO/La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) superlattice using polarized neutron reflectivity (PNR). Our PNR results indicate parallel alignment of magnetization across BFO/LSMO interfaces. The study showed an increase in average magnetization on increasing applied magnetic field at 10K. We observed a saturation magnetization of 110 \pm 15 kA/m (~0.8 μB/Fe) for ultrathin BFO layer (~2 unit cell) sandwiched between ultrathin LSMO layers (~ 2 unit cell), which is much higher than the canted moment (0.03 μB/Fe) in the bulk BFO. The macroscopic VSM results on superlattice clearly indicate superparamagnetic behavior typically observed in nanoparticles of manganites.

Deposition Order Dependent Magnetization Reversal in Pressure Graded Co/Pd films

Magnetization reversal mechanisms and depth-dependent magnetic profile have been investigated in Co/Pd thin films magnetron-sputtered under continuously varying pressure with opposite deposition orders. For samples grown under increasing pressure, magnetization reversal is dominated by domain nucleation, propagation and annihilation; an anisotropy gradient is effectively established, along with a pronounced depth-dependent magnetization profile. However, in films grown under decreasing pressure, disorders propagate vertically from the bottom high-pressure region into the top low-pressure region, impeding domain wall motion and forcing magnetization reversal via rotation; depth-dependent magnetization varies in an inverted order, but the spread is much suppressed.

Induced magnetization in La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$/BiFeO$_3$ superlattices

Using polarized neutron reflectometry (PNR), we observe an induced magnetization of 75$\pm$ 25 kA/m at 10 K in a La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ (LSMO)/BiFeO$_3$ superlattice extending from the interface through several atomic layers of the BiFeO$_3$ (BFO). The induced magnetization in BFO is explained by density functional theory, where the size of bandgap of BFO plays an important role. Considering a classical exchange field between the LSMO and BFO layers, we further show that magnetization is expected to extend throughout the BFO, which provides a theoretical explanation for the results of the neutron scattering experiment.

Manipulation of the magnetic order parameter and the metal-insulator-transition of a manganite thin film with applied elastic stress

We measured the temperature dependence of the saturation magnetization (Ms) of a (La1-xPrx)1-yCayMnO3 (x ~ 0.60, y ~ 0.33) film as a function of applied bending stress. Stress producing a compressive strain of -0.01% along the magnetic easy axis increased the Curie temperature by ~6 K and the metal-insulator-transition by ~4 K. Regardless of whether or not stress is applied to the film, magnetic ordering occurs at temperatures significantly higher than the metal-insulator-transition temperature. The magnetization of the sample at the temperature of the metal-insulator-transition is approximately the site percolation threshold for a two-dimensional spin lattice.

Neutron Reflectometry Studies on Magnetic Stripe Domains in Permalloy/Superconductor bilayers

We explored changes in magnetic domain structures in a magnetic layer due to the onset of the superconductivity of an adjacent superconductive layer using neutron reflectometry. Magnetic domain structures in 1~$μ$m thick permalloy (Py) films were studied as functions of magnetic field, temperature and under the influence of the onset of superconductivity in a neighboring layer. Bragg peaks in the off-specular scattering were observed at low fields following saturation with an in-plane field, which are attributed to the quasi-parallel magnetic stripes along the field direction. During the magnetization reversal from saturation, the stripe pattern shows increases in the period, the transverse coherence length (\textit{i.e.}, perpendicular to the stripes) and the amplitude of the out-of-plane magnetization component. The coherence length of the magnetic stripes is anisotropic in the remnant state with the longitudinal coherence length (\textit{i.e.}, along the stripes) being larger than the transverse one. The stripe period shows a weak temperature dependence between 300~K and 3~K, but no abrupt change in the period is observed when the temperature crosses the superconducting critical temperature.

Synthetic magnetoelectric coupling in a nanocomposite multiferroic

Given the paucity of single phase multiferroic materials (with large ferromagnetic moment), composite systems seem an attractive solution in the quest to realize magnetoelectric cou-pling between ferromagnetic and ferroelectric order parameters. Despite having antiferro-magnetic order, BiFeO3 (BFO) has nevertheless been a key material in this quest due to excel-lent ferroelectric properties at room temperature. We studied a superlattice composed of 8 repetitions of 6 unit cells of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) grown on 5 unit cells of BFO. Significant net uncompensated magnetization in BFO is demonstrated using polarized neutron reflectometry in an insulating superlattice. Remarkably, the magnetization enables magnetic field to change the dielectric properties of the superlattice, which we cite as an example of synthetic magnetoelectric coupling. Importantly, this controlled creation of magnetic moment in BFO suggests a much needed path forward for the design and implementation of integrated oxide devices for next generation magnetoelectric data storage platforms.

Emergent Spin-Filter at the interface between Ferromagnetic and Insulating Layered Oxides

We report a strong effect of interface-induced magnetization on the transport properties of magnetic tunnel junctions consisting of ferromagnetic manganite La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ and insulating cuprate PrBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$. Contrary to the typically observed steady increase of the tunnel magnetoresistance with decreasing temperature, this system exhibits a sudden anomalous decrease at low temperatures. Interestingly, this anomalous behavior can be attributed to the competition between the positive spin polarization of the manganite contacts and the negative spin-filter effect from the interface-induced Cu magnetization.

Interfacial Ferromagnetism in LaNiO3/CaMnO3 Superlattices

We observe interfacial ferromagnetism in superlattices of the paramagnetic metal LaNiO3 and the antiferromagnetic insulator CaMnO3. LaNiO3 exhibits a thickness dependent metal-insulator transition and we find the emergence of ferromagnetism to be coincident with the conducting state of LaNiO3. That is, only superlattices in which the LaNiO3 layers are metallic exhibit ferromagnetism. Using several magnetic probes, we have determined that the ferromagnetism arises in a single unit cell of CaMnO3 at the interface. Together these results suggest that ferromagnetism can be attributed to a double exchange interaction among Mn ions mediated by the adjacent itinerant metal.

Phase diagram of a three-dimensional antiferromagnet with random magnetic anisotropy

Three-dimensional (3D) antiferromagnets with random magnetic anisotropy (RMA) experimentally studied to date do not have random single-ion anisotropies, but rather have competing two-dimensional and three-dimensional exchange interactions which can obscure the authentic effects of RMA. The magnetic phase diagram Fe$_{x}$Ni$_{1-x}$F$_{2}$ epitaxial thin films with true random single-ion anisotropy was deduced from magnetometry and neutron scattering measurements and analyzed using mean field theory. Regions with uniaxial, oblique and easy plane anisotropies were identified. A RMA-induced glass region was discovered where a Griffiths-like breakdown of long-range spin order occurs.

Effect of Interface Induced Exchange Fields on Cuprate-Manganite Spin Switches

We examine the anomalous inverse spin switch behavior in La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ (LCMO)/YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ (YBCO)/LCMO trilayers by combined transport studies and polarized neutron reflectometry. Measuring magnetization profiles and magnetoresistance in an in-plane rotating magnetic field, we prove that, contrary to many accepted theoretical scenarios, the relative orientation between the two LCMO's magnetizations is not sufficient to determine the magnetoresistance. Rather the field dependence of magnetoresistance is explained by the interplay between the applied magnetic field and the (exponential tail of the) induced exchange field in YBCO, the latter originating from the electronic reconstruction at the LCMO/YBCO interfaces.

Images of metallic and insulating domains on the surface of a (La0.4Pr0.6)0.67Ca0.33MnO3 film

Using conductive atomic force microscopy, we observed non-uniform distributions of metallic and insulating domains on the surface of a single crystalline (La0.4Pr0.6)0.67Ca0.33MnO3 film grown on a (110) NdGaO3 substrate. The electronic properties of the surface exhibit thermal hysteresis. The hysteresis is similar to that of the transport and magnetism of the film bulk.

Measurement of the coupling between applied stress and magnetism in a manganite thin film

We measured the magnetization depth profile of a (La1-xPrx)1-yCayMnO3 (x = 0.60\pm0.04, y = 0.20\pm0.03) film as a function of applied bending stress using polarized neutron reflectometry. From these measurements we obtained a coupling coefficient relating strain to the depth dependent magnetization. We found application of compressive (tensile) bending stress along the magnetic easy axis increases (decreases) the magnetization of the film.

Correlation between surface rumpling and structural phase transformation of SrTiO3

We present x-ray reflectivity, x-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy measurements of single crystal SrTiO3 taken as a function of temperature. We found a rumpling transformation of the SrTiO3 surface after cooling the sample below ~105 K. The rumpling transformation is correlated with the cubic to tetragonal phase transformation that occurs at the same temperature. The rumpling transformation is reversible.

Magnetic non-uniformity and thermal hysteresis of magnetism in a manganite thin film

We measured the chemical and magnetic depth profiles of a single crystalline (La$_{1-x}$Pr$_x$)$_{1-y}$Ca$_y$MnO$_{3-δ}$ (x = 0.52\pm0.05, y = 0.23\pm0.04, δ = 0.14\pm0.10) film grown on a NdGaO3 substrate using x-ray reflectometry, electron microscopy, electron energy-loss spectroscopy and polarized neutron reflectometry. Our data indicate that the film exhibits coexistence of different magnetic phases as a function of depth. The magnetic depth profile is correlated with a variation of chemical composition with depth. The thermal hysteresis of ferromagnetic order in the film suggests a first order ferromagnetic transition at low temperatures.

Upper limit to magnetism in LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures

Using polarized neutron reflectometry (PNR) we measured the neutron spin dependent reflectivity from four LaAlO3/SrTiO3 superlattices. This experiment implies that the upper limit for the magnetization induced by an 11 T magnetic field at 1.7 K is 2 emu/cm3. SQUID magnetometry of the superlattices sporadically finds an enhanced moment, possibly due to experimental artifacts. These observations set important restrictions on theories which imply a strongly enhanced magnetism at the interface between LaAlO3 and SrTiO3.
