Bell inequality violation by entangled single photon states generated from a laser, a LED or a Halogen lamp

In single-particle or intraparticle entanglement, two degrees of freedom of a single particle, e.g., momentum and polarization of a single photon, are entangled. Single-particle entanglement (SPE) provides a source of non classical correlations which can be exploited both in quantum communication protocols and in experimental tests of noncontextuality based on the Kochen-Specker theorem. Furthermore, SPE is robust under decoherence phenomena. Here, we show that single-particle entangled states of single photons can be produced from attenuated sources of light, even classical ones. To experimentally certify the entanglement, we perform a Bell test, observing a violation of the Clauser, Horne, Shimony and Holt (CHSH) inequality. On the one hand, we show that this entanglement can be achieved even in a classical light beam, provided that first-order coherence is maintained between the degrees of freedom involved in the entanglement. On the other hand, we prove that filtered and attenuated light sources provide a flux of independent SPE photons that, from a statistical point of view, are indistinguishable from those generated by a single photon source. This has important consequences, since it demonstrates that cheap, compact, and low power entangled photon sources can be used for a range of quantum technology applications.

Beam Dynamics Investigation of the 101.28 MHz IH Structure as Injector for the HIE-ISOLDE SC Linac

The first phase of the HIE-ISOLDE project at CERN consists of a superconducting (SC) linac upgrade in order to increase the energy of post-accelerated radioactive ion beams from 2.8 MeV/u to over 10 MeV/u (for A/q = 4.5). In preparation for the upgrade, we present beam dynamics studies of the booster section of the normal conducting (NC) REX-ISOLDE linac, focused on the longitudinal development of the beam in the 101.28 MHz Interdigital H-mode Structure (IHS), employing a Combined Zero Degree Structure (KONUS), pulsing at a high gradient of over 3 MV/m. The evolution of the transverse emittance in the SC linac depends critically on the injected longitudinal phase space distribution of particles from the existing linac and, with a better understanding of the beam dynamics upstream, the performance of the upgrade can be optimised. Data taken during the commissioning phase of the REX-ISOLDE linac is analysed to understand the properties of the beam in the booster and combined with beam dynamics simulations which include the realistic fields of the IHS, determined from both simulation and perturbation measurement.

Beam Dynamics Studies of the REX-ISOLDE Linac in Preparation for its Role as Injector for the HIE-ISOLDE SC Linac at CERN

The superconducting (SC) High Intensity and Energy (HIE) ISOLDE linac will replace most of the existing accelerating infrastructure of the Radioactive ion beam EXperiment (REX) at CERN, however, the 101.28 MHz RFQ and 5 MV IH cavity will remain in the role of injector for the upgrade, boosting the beam up to an energy of 1.2 MeV/u. We present the results of a beam dynamics investigation of the injector focused most critically on matching the longitudinal beam parameters from the RFQ to the SC machine, which is complicated largely by the IH cavity employing a Combined Zero Degree (KONUS) beam dynamics design. The longitudinal beam parameters at the RFQ are reconstructed from measurement using the three gradient method and combined with beam dynamics measurements and simulations of the IH structure to design the matching section for the SC linac.

First Results on In-Beam gamma Spectroscopy of Neutron-Rich Na and Mg Isotopes at REX-ISOLDE

After the successful commissioning of the radioactive beam experiment at ISOLDE (REX-ISOLDE) - an accelerator for exotic nuclei produced by ISOLDE - first physics experiments using these beams were performed. Initial experiments focused on the region of deformation in the vicinity of the neutron-rich Na and Mg isotopes. Preliminary results show the high potential and physics opportunities offered by the exotic isotope accelerator REX in conjunction with the modern Germanium gamma spectrometer MINIBALL.
