RIXS observation of bond-directional nearest-neighbor excitations in the Kitaev material Na$_2$IrO$_3$

Spin-orbit coupling locks spin direction and spatial orientation and generates, in semi-classical magnets, a local spin easy-axis and associated ordering. Quantum spin-1/2's defy this fate: rather than spins becoming locally anisotropic, the spin-spin interactions do. Consequently interactions become dependent on the spatial orientation of bonds between spins, prime theoretical examples of which are Kitaev magnets. Bond-directional interactions imply the existence of bond-directional magnetic modes, predicted spin excitations that render crystallographically equivalent bonds magnetically inequivalent, which yet have remained elusive experimentally. Here we show that resonant inelastic x-ray scattering allows us to explicitly probe the bond-directional character of magnetic excitations. To do so, we use a scattering plane spanned by one bond and the corresponding spin component and scan a range of momentum transfer that encompasses multiple Brillouin zones. Applying this approach to Na$_2$IrO$_3$ we establish the different bond-directional characters of magnetic excitations at 10 meV and 45 meV. Combined with the observation of spin-spin correlations that are confined to a single bond, this experimentally validates the Kitaev character of exchange interactions long proposed for this material.

High-Field Quantum Disordered State in $α$-RuCl3: Spin Flips, Bound States, and a Multi-Particle Continuum

Layered $α$-RuCl3 has been discussed as a proximate Kitaev spin liquid compound. Raman and THz spectroscopy of magnetic excitations confirm that the low-temperature antiferromagnetic ordered phase features a broad Raman continuum, together with two magnon-like excitations at 2.7 and 3.6 meV, respectively. The continuum strength is maximized as long-range order is suppressed by an external magnetic field. The state above the field-induced quantum phase transition around 7.5 T is characterized by a gapped multi-particle continuum out of which a two-particle bound state emerges, together with a well-defined single-particle excitation at lower energy. Exact diagonalization calculations demonstrate that Kitaev and off-diagonal exchange terms in the Fleury-Loudon operator are crucial for the occurrence of these features in the Raman spectra. Our study firmly establishes the partially-polarized quantum disordered character of the high-field phase.

Revealing puddles of electrons and holes in compensated topological insulators

Three-dimensional topological insulators harbour metallic surface states with exotic properties. In transport or optics, these properties are typically masked by defect-induced bulk carriers. Compensation of donors and acceptors reduces the carrier density, but the bulk resistivity remains disappointingly small. We show that measurements of the optical conductivity in BiSbTeSe$_2$ pinpoint the presence of electron-hole puddles in the bulk at low temperatures, which is essential for understanding DC bulk transport. The puddles arise from large fluctuations of the Coulomb potential of donors and acceptors, even in the case of full compensation. Surprisingly, the number of carriers appearing within puddles drops rapidly with increasing temperature and almost vanishes around 40 K. Monte Carlo simulations show that a highly non-linear screening effect arising from thermally activated carriers destroys the puddles at a temperature scale set by the Coulomb interaction between neighbouring dopants, explaining the experimental observation semi-quantitatively. This mechanism remains valid if donors and acceptors do not compensate perfectly.

Group delay in THz spectroscopy with ultra-wideband log-spiral antennae

We report on the group delay observed in continuous-wave terahertz spectroscopy based on photomixing with phase-sensitive homodyne detection. We discuss the different contributions of the experimental setup to the phase difference Δϕ(ν) between transmitter arm and receiver arm. A simple model based on three contributions yields a quantitative description of the overall behavior of Δϕ(ν). Firstly, the optical path-length difference gives rise to a term linear in frequency. Secondly, the ultra-wideband log-spiral antennae effectively radiate and receive in a frequency-dependent active region, which in the most simple model is an annular area with a circumference equal to the wavelength. The corresponding term changes by roughly 6 pi between 100 GHz and 1 THz. The third contribution stems from the photomixer impedance. In contrast, the derivative (dΔϕ/ dν) is dominated by the contribution of periodic modulations of Δϕ(ν) caused by standing waves, e.g., in the photomixers' Si lenses. Furthermore, we discuss the Fourier-transformed spectra, which are equivalent to the waveform in a time-domain experiment. In the time domain, the group delay introduced by the log-spiral antennae gives rise to strongly chirped signals, in which low frequencies are delayed. Correcting for the contributions of antennae and photomixers yields sharp peaks or "pulses" and thus facilitates a time-domain-like analysis of our continuous-wave data.

Infrared-active phonon modes in monoclinic multiferroic MnWO4

We report on polarized infrared reflectivity measurements of multiferroic, monoclinic MnWO4 between 10K and 295K. The full dielectric tensor and the frequency dependence of the orientation of the principal axes have been determined in the frequency range of the phonons. All infrared-active phonon modes (7 A_u modes and 8 B_u modes) are unambiguously identified. In particular the strongest B_u modes have been overlooked in previous studies, in which the monoclinic symmetry was neglected in the analysis. Using a generalized Drude-Lorentz model, we determine the temperature dependence of the phonon parameters, including the orientation of the B_u modes within the ac plane. The phonon parameters and their temperature dependence have been discussed controversially in previous studies, which do not include a full polarization analysis. Our data does not confirm any of the anomalies reported above 20K. However, in the paramagnetic phase we find a drastic reduction of the spectral weights of the weakest A_u mode and of the weakest B_u mode with increasing temperature. Below 20K, the parameters of the A_u phonon modes for E||b show only subtle changes, which demonstrate a finite but weak coupling between lattice dynamics and magnetism in MnWO4. A quantitative comparison of our infrared data with the quasi-static dielectric constant epsilon_b indicates that the spectral weight of the electromagnon is tiny for E||b, in particular much smaller than the weak changes of the spectral weight of the phonons.

Self-normalizing phase measurement in multimode terahertz spectroscopy based on photomixing of three lasers

Photomixing of two near-infrared lasers is well established for continuous-wave terahertz spectroscopy. Photomixing of three lasers allows us to measure at three terahertz frequencies simultaneously. Similar to Fourier spectroscopy, the spectral information is contained in an nterferogram, which is equivalent to the waveform in time-domain spectroscopy. We use one fixed terahertz frequency ν_ref to monitor temporal drifts of the setup, i.e., of the optical path-length difference. The other two frequencies are scanned for broadband high-resolution spectroscopy. The frequency dependence of the phase is obtained with high accuracy by normalizing it to the data obtained at ν_ref, which eliminates drifts of the optical path-length difference. We achieve an accuracy of about 1-2 microns or 10^{-8} of the optical path length. This method is particularly suitable for applications in nonideal environmental conditions outside of an air-conditioned laboratory.

Enhancing the stability of a continuous-wave terahertz system by photocurrent normalization

In a continuous-wave terahertz system based on photomixing, the measured amplitude of the terahertz signal shows an uncertainty due to drifts of the responsivities of the photomixers and of the optical power illuminating the photomixers. We report on a simple method to substantially reduce this uncertainty. By normalizing the amplitude to the DC photocurrents in both the transmitter and receiver photomixers, we achieve a significant increase of the stability. If, e.g., the optical power of one laser is reduced by 10%, the normalized signal is expected to change by only 0.3%, i.e., less than the typical uncertainty due to short-term fluctuations. This stabilization can be particularly valuable for terahertz applications in non-ideal environmental conditions outside of a temperature-stabilized laboratory.

Orbital superexchange and crystal field simultaneously at play in YVO3: resonant inelastic x-ray scattering at the V L edge and the O K edge

We report on the observation of orbital excitations in YVO3 by means of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at energies across the vanadium L3 and oxygen K absorption edges. Due to the excellent experimental resolution we are able to resolve the intra-t2g excitations at 0.1-0.2 eV, 1.07 eV, and 1.28 eV, the lowest excitations from the t2g into the eg levels at 1.86 eV, and further excitations above 2.2 eV. For the intra-t2g excitations at 0.1-0.2 eV, the RIXS peaks show small shifts of the order of 10-40 meV as a function of temperature and of about 13-20 meV as a function of the transferred momentum q||a. We argue that the latter reflects a finite dispersion of the orbital excitations. For incident energies tuned to the oxygen K edge, RIXS is more sensitive to intersite excitations. We observe excitations across the Mott-Hubbard gap and find an additional feature at 0.4 eV which we attribute to two-orbiton scattering, i.e., an exchange of orbitals between adjacent sites. Altogether, these results indicate that both superexchange interactions and the coupling to the lattice are important for a quantitative understanding of the orbital excitations in YVO3.

Temperature-dependent optical conductivity of layered LaSrFeO_4

Compounds with intermediate-size transition metals such as Fe or Mn are close to the transition between charge-transfer systems and Mott-Hubbard systems. We study the optical conductivity σ(ω) of insulating layered LaSrFeO_4 in the energy range 0.5 - 5.5 eV from 15 K to 250 K by the use of spectroscopic ellipsometry in combination with transmittance measurements. A multipeak structure is observed in both σ^a(ω) and σ^c(ω). The layered structure gives rise to a pronounced anisotropy, thereby offering a means to disentangle Mott-Hubbard and charge-transfer absorption bands. We find strong evidence that the lowest dipole-allowed excitation in LaSrFeO_4 is of Mott-Hubbard type. This rather unexpected result can be attributed to Fe 3d - O 2p hybridization and in particular to the layered structure with the associated splitting of the e_g level. In general, Mott-Hubbard absorption bands may show a strong dependence on temperature. This is not the case in LaSrFeO_4, in agreement with the fact that spin-spin and orbital-orbital correlations between nearest neighbors do not vary strongly below room temperature in this compound with a high-spin 3d^5 configuration and a Neel temperature of T_N = 366 K.

Collective orbital excitations in orbitally ordered YVO3 and HoVO3

We study orbital excitations in the optical absorption spectra of YVO3 and HoVO3. We focus on an orbital absorption band observed at 0.4 eV for polarization E parallel c. This feature is only observed in the intermediate, monoclinic phase. By comparison with the local crystal-field excitations in VOCl and with recent theoretical predictions for the crystal-field levels we show that this absorption band cannot be interpreted in terms of a local crystal-field excitation. We discuss a microscopic model which attributes this absorption band to the exchange of two orbitals on adjacent sites, i.e., to the direct excitation of two orbitons. This model is strongly supported by the observed dependence on polarization and temperature. Moreover, the calculated spectral weight is in good agreement with the experimental result.

Magnetic excitations in the stripe phase of high-T_c superconductors

The magnetic excitations in the stripe phase of high-T_c superconductors are investigated in a model of spin ladders which are effectively coupled via charged stripes. Starting from the effective single-triplon model for the isolated spin ladder, the quasi-one-dimensional spin system can be described straightforwardly. Very good agreement is obtained with recent neutron scattering data on La_(15/8)Ba_(1/8)CuO_4 (no spin gap) and YBa_2Cu_3O_(6.6) (gapped). The signature of quasi-one-dimensional spin physics in a single-domain stripe phase is predicted.

Charge order induced sharp Raman peak in Sr_14Cu_24O_41

In the two-leg S=1/2 ladders of Sr_14Cu_24O_41 a modulation of the exchange coupling arises from the charge order within the other structural element, the CuO_2 chains. In general, breaking translational invariance by modulation causes gaps within the dispersion of elementary excitations. We show that the gap induced by the charge order can drastically change the magnetic Raman spectrum leading to the sharp peak observed in Sr_14Cu_24O_41. This sharp Raman line gives insight in the charge-order periodicity and hence in the distribution of carriers. The much broader spectrum of La_6Ca_8Cu_24O$_41 reflects the response of an undoped ladder in the absence of charge order.

Strong anisotropy of superexchange in the copper-oxygen chains of La_{14-x}Ca_{x}Cu_{24}O_{41}

Electron spin resonance data of Cu^{2+} ions in La_{14-x}Ca_{x}Cu_{24}O_{41} crystals (x=9,11,12) reveal a very large width of the resonance line in the paramagnetic state. This signals an unusually strong anisotropy of ~10% of the isotropic Heisenberg superexchange in the Cu-O chains of this compound. The strong anisotropy can be explained by the specific geometry of two symmetrical 90 degree Cu-O-Cu bonds, which boosts the importance of orbital degrees of freedom. Our data show the apparent limitations of the applicability of an isotropic Heisenberg model to the low dimensional cuprates.

Spin-Waves in the Mid-Infrared Spectrum of Antiferromagnetic YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.0}$

The mid-infrared spin-wave spectrum of antiferromagnetic YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.0}$\ was determined by infrared transmission and reflection measurements ($\bbox{k} \!\! \parallel $c) at $T\!=\!10\!$~K.\@ Excitation of single magnons of the optical branch was observed at $E_{\text{op}}\!=\!178.0\!$~meV.\@ Two further peaks at $346\!$~meV ($\approx\!1.94\,E_{\text{op}}$) and $470\!$~meV ($\approx\!2.6\,E_{\text{op}}$) both belong to the two-magnon spectrum. Linear spin wave theory is in good agreement with the measured two-magnon spectrum, and allows to determine the exchange constant $J$ to be about $120\!$~meV, whereas the intrabilayer coupling $J_{12}$ is approximately $0.55\,J$.
