Evidence for current-induced phase coexistence in Ca$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ and its influence on magnetic order

Combining quasistatic and time-resolved transport measurements with X-ray and neutron diffraction experiments we study the non-equilibrium states that arise in pure and in Ti substituted Ca$_2$RuO$_4$ under the application of current densities. Time-resolved studies of the current-induced switching find a slow conductance relaxation that can be identified with heating and a fast one that unambiguously proves an intrinsic mechanism. The current-induced phase transition leads to complex diffraction patterns. Separated Bragg reflections that can be associated with the metallic and insulating phases by their lattice parameters, indicate a real structure with phase coexistence that strongly varies with temperature and current strength. A third contribution with a $c$ lattice constant in between those of metallic and insulating phases appears upon cooling. At low current densities, this additional phase appears below $\sim$100 K and is accompanied by a suppression of the antiferromagnetic order that otherwise can coexist with current carrying states. A possible origin of the intermediate phase is discussed.

Critical slowing down near the multiferroic phase transition in MnWO$_4$

By using broadband dielectric spectroscopy in the radiofrequency and microwave range we studied the magnetoelectric dynamics in the multiferroic chiral antiferromagnet MnWO$_4$. Above the multiferroic phase transition at $T_{N2} \approx 12.6$ K we observe a critical slowing down of the corresponding magnetoelectric fluctuations resembling the soft-mode behavior in canonical ferroelectrics. This electric field driven excitation carries much less spectral weight than ordinary phonon modes. Also the critical slowing down of this mode scales with an exponent larger than one which is expected for magnetic second order phase transition scenarios. Therefore the investigated dynamics have to be interpreted as the softening of an electrically active magnetic excitation, an electromagnon.

Domain dynamics in the multiferroic phase of MnWO4

By using broadband linear and nonlinear dielectric spectroscopy we studied the magnetoelectric dynamics in the chiral antiferromagnet MnWO4. In the multiferroic phase the dielectric response is dominated by the dynamics of domains and domain walls which is strongly dependent on the stimulating electric field. The mean switching time reaches values in the minute range in the middle of the multiferroic temperature regime at T=10 K but unexpectedly decays again on approaching the lower, first-order phase boundary at T_N1=7.6K. The switchability of the ferroelectric domains denotes a pinning-induced threshold and can be described considering a growth-limited scenario with an effective growth dimension of d=1.8. The rise of the effective dynamical coercive field on cooling below the TN2 is much stronger compared to the usual ferroelectrics and can be described by a power law E_c ~ν^1/2. The latter questions the feasibility of fast-switching devices based on this type of material.

Group delay in THz spectroscopy with ultra-wideband log-spiral antennae

We report on the group delay observed in continuous-wave terahertz spectroscopy based on photomixing with phase-sensitive homodyne detection. We discuss the different contributions of the experimental setup to the phase difference Δϕ(ν) between transmitter arm and receiver arm. A simple model based on three contributions yields a quantitative description of the overall behavior of Δϕ(ν). Firstly, the optical path-length difference gives rise to a term linear in frequency. Secondly, the ultra-wideband log-spiral antennae effectively radiate and receive in a frequency-dependent active region, which in the most simple model is an annular area with a circumference equal to the wavelength. The corresponding term changes by roughly 6 pi between 100 GHz and 1 THz. The third contribution stems from the photomixer impedance. In contrast, the derivative (dΔϕ/ dν) is dominated by the contribution of periodic modulations of Δϕ(ν) caused by standing waves, e.g., in the photomixers' Si lenses. Furthermore, we discuss the Fourier-transformed spectra, which are equivalent to the waveform in a time-domain experiment. In the time domain, the group delay introduced by the log-spiral antennae gives rise to strongly chirped signals, in which low frequencies are delayed. Correcting for the contributions of antennae and photomixers yields sharp peaks or "pulses" and thus facilitates a time-domain-like analysis of our continuous-wave data.

Infrared-active phonon modes in monoclinic multiferroic MnWO4

We report on polarized infrared reflectivity measurements of multiferroic, monoclinic MnWO4 between 10K and 295K. The full dielectric tensor and the frequency dependence of the orientation of the principal axes have been determined in the frequency range of the phonons. All infrared-active phonon modes (7 A_u modes and 8 B_u modes) are unambiguously identified. In particular the strongest B_u modes have been overlooked in previous studies, in which the monoclinic symmetry was neglected in the analysis. Using a generalized Drude-Lorentz model, we determine the temperature dependence of the phonon parameters, including the orientation of the B_u modes within the ac plane. The phonon parameters and their temperature dependence have been discussed controversially in previous studies, which do not include a full polarization analysis. Our data does not confirm any of the anomalies reported above 20K. However, in the paramagnetic phase we find a drastic reduction of the spectral weights of the weakest A_u mode and of the weakest B_u mode with increasing temperature. Below 20K, the parameters of the A_u phonon modes for E||b show only subtle changes, which demonstrate a finite but weak coupling between lattice dynamics and magnetism in MnWO4. A quantitative comparison of our infrared data with the quasi-static dielectric constant epsilon_b indicates that the spectral weight of the electromagnon is tiny for E||b, in particular much smaller than the weak changes of the spectral weight of the phonons.

Interplay between antiferrodistortive, ferroelectric and superconducting instabilities in Sr_{1-x}Ca_{x}$TiO_{3-δ}

SrTiO$_{3}$ undergoes a cubic-to-tetragonal phase transition at 105K. This antiferrodistortive transition is believed to be in competition with incipient ferroelectricity. Substituting strontium by isovalent calcium induces a ferroelectric order. Introducing mobile electrons to the system by chemical non-isovalent doping, on the other hand, leads to the emergence of a dilute metal with a superconducting ground state. The link between superconductivity and the other two instabilities is an open question, which gathers momentum in the context of the growing popularity of the paradigm linking unconventional superconductors and quantum critical points. We present a set of specific-heat, neutron-scattering and dielectric permittivity and polarization measurements on Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$TiO$_{3}$ ($0<x<0.009$) and a low-temperature electric conductivity in Sr$_{0.9978}$Ca$_{0.0022}$TiO$_{3-δ}$. Calcium substitution was found to enhance the transition temperature for both anti-ferrodistortive and ferroelectric transitions. Moreover, we find that Sr$_{0.9978}$Ca$_{0.0022}$TiO$_{3-δ}$ has a superconducting ground state. The critical temperature in this rare case of a superconductor with a ferroelectric parent, is slightly lower than in SrTiO$_{3-δ}$ of comparable carrier concentration. A three-dimensional phase diagram for Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$TiO$_{3-δ}$ tracking the three transition temperatures as a function of x and $δ$ results from this study, in which ferroelectric and superconducting ground states are not immediate neighbours.

Self-normalizing phase measurement in multimode terahertz spectroscopy based on photomixing of three lasers

Photomixing of two near-infrared lasers is well established for continuous-wave terahertz spectroscopy. Photomixing of three lasers allows us to measure at three terahertz frequencies simultaneously. Similar to Fourier spectroscopy, the spectral information is contained in an nterferogram, which is equivalent to the waveform in time-domain spectroscopy. We use one fixed terahertz frequency ν_ref to monitor temporal drifts of the setup, i.e., of the optical path-length difference. The other two frequencies are scanned for broadband high-resolution spectroscopy. The frequency dependence of the phase is obtained with high accuracy by normalizing it to the data obtained at ν_ref, which eliminates drifts of the optical path-length difference. We achieve an accuracy of about 1-2 microns or 10^{-8} of the optical path length. This method is particularly suitable for applications in nonideal environmental conditions outside of an air-conditioned laboratory.

Enhancing the stability of a continuous-wave terahertz system by photocurrent normalization

In a continuous-wave terahertz system based on photomixing, the measured amplitude of the terahertz signal shows an uncertainty due to drifts of the responsivities of the photomixers and of the optical power illuminating the photomixers. We report on a simple method to substantially reduce this uncertainty. By normalizing the amplitude to the DC photocurrents in both the transmitter and receiver photomixers, we achieve a significant increase of the stability. If, e.g., the optical power of one laser is reduced by 10%, the normalized signal is expected to change by only 0.3%, i.e., less than the typical uncertainty due to short-term fluctuations. This stabilization can be particularly valuable for terahertz applications in non-ideal environmental conditions outside of a temperature-stabilized laboratory.

Evidence for local lattice distortions in giant magnetocapacitive CdCr2S4

Raman scattering experiments on CdCr2S4 single crystals show pronounced anomalies in intensity and frequency of optical phonon modes with an onset temperature T*=130 K that coincides with the regime of giant magnetocapacitive effects. A loss of inversion symmetry and Cr off-centering are deduced from the observation of longitudinal optical and formerly infrared active modes for T<T_c=84 K. The intensity anomalies are attributed to the enhanced electronic polarizability of displacements that modulate the Cr-S distance and respective hybridization. Photo doping leads to an annihilation of the symmetry reduction. Our scenario of multiferroic effects is based on the near degeneracy of polar and nonpolar modes and the additional low energy scale due to hybridization.

CdV2O4: A rare example of a collinear multiferroic spinel

By studying the dielectric properties of the geometrically frustrated spinel CdV2O4, we observe ferroelectricity developing at the transition into the collinear antiferromagnetic ground state. In this multiferroic spinel, ferroelectricity is driven by local magnetostriction and not by the more common scenario of spiral magnetism. The experimental findings are corroborated by ab-initio calculations of the electric polarization and the underlying spin and orbital order. The results point towards a charge rearrangement due to dimerization, where electronic correlations and the proximity to the insulator-metal transition play an important role.

Soft-mode behavior of electromagnons in multiferroic manganite

The behavior of the low-frequency electromagnon in multiferroic DyMnO3 has been investigated in external magnetic fields and in a magnetically ordered state. Significant softening of the electromagnon frequency is observed for external magnetic fields parallel to the a-axis (BIIa), revealing a number of similarities to a classical soft mode behavior known for ferroelectric phase transitions. The softening of the electromagnon yields an increase of the static dielectric permittivity which follows a similar dependence as predicted by the Lyddane-Sachs-Teller relation. Within the geometry BIIb the increase of the electromagnon intensity does not correspond to the softening of the eigenfrequency. In this case the increase of the static dielectric permittivity seem to be governed by the motion of the domain walls.

31P NMR study of Na2CuP2O7: a S=1/2 two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnetic system

The magnetic properties of Na2CuP2O7 were investigated by means of 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity measurements. We report the 31P NMR shift, the spin-lattice 1/T1, and spin-spin 1/T2 relaxation-rate data as a function of temperature T. The temperature dependence of the NMR shift K(T) is well described by the S=1/2 square lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnetic (HAF) model with an intraplanar exchange of J/k_B \simeq 18\pm2 K and a hyperfine coupling A = (3533\pm185) Oe/mu_B. The 31P NMR spectrum was found to broaden abruptly below T \sim 10 K signifying some kind of transition. However, no anomaly was noticed in the bulk susceptibility data down to 1.8 K. The heat capacity appears to have a weak maximum around 10 K. With decrease in temperatures, the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 decreases monotonically and appears to agree well with the high temperature series expansion expression for a S = 1/2 2D square lattice.

Colossal magnetostriction and negative thermal expansion in the frustrated antiferromagnet ZnCr2Se4

A detailed investigation of ZnCr2Se4 is presented which is dominated by strong ferromagnetic exchange but orders antiferromagnetically at T_N = 21 K. Specific heat C and thermal expansion Delta L/L exhibit sharp first-order anomalies at the antiferromagnetic transition. T_N is strongly reduced and shifted to lower temperatures by external magnetic fields and finally is fully suppressed suggesting a field induced quantum critical behavior close to 60 kOe. Delta L/L(T) is unusually large and exhibits negative thermal expansion below 75 K down to T_N indicating strong frustration of the lattice. Magnetostriction Delta L/L(H) reveals colossal values (0.5x10^{-3}) comparable to giant magnetostriction materials. Electron-spin resonance, however, shows negligible spin-orbital coupling excluding orbitally induced Jahn-Teller distortions. The obtained results point to a spin-driven origin of the structural instability at T_N explained in terms of competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions yielding strong bond frustration.

The multiferroic phases of (Eu:Y)MnO3

We report on structural, magnetic, dielectric, and thermodynamic properties of (Eu:Y)MnO3 for Y doping levels 0 <= x < 1. This system resembles the multiferroic perovskite manganites RMnO3 (with R= Gd, Dy, Tb) but without the interference of magnetic contributions of the 4f-ions. In addition, it offers the possibility to continuously tune the influence of the A-site ionic radii. For small concentrations x <= 0.1 we find a canted antiferromagnetic and paraelectric groundstate. For higher concentrations x <= 0.3 ferroelectric polarization coexists with the features of a long wavelength incommensurate spiral magnetic phase analogous to the observations in TbMnO3. In the intermediate concentration range around x = 0.2 a multiferroic scenario is realized combining weak ferroelectricity and weak ferromagnetism, presumably due to a canted spiral magnetic structure.

Uniaxial pressure dependencies of the phase transitions in GdMnO$_3$

GdMnO$_3$ shows an incommensurate antiferromagnetic order below $\simeq 42$ K, transforms into a canted A-type antiferromagnet below $\simeq 20$ K, and for finite magnetic fields along the b axis ferroelectric order occurs below $\simeq 12$ K. From high-resolution thermal expansion measurements along all three principal axes, we determine the uniaxial pressure dependencies of the various transition temperatures and discuss their correlation to changes of the magnetic exchange couplings in $R$MnO$_3$ ($R = {\rm La, ... Dy}$).

Evidence for Jahn-Teller distortions at the antiferromagnetic transition in LaTiO$_3$

LaTiO$_3$ is known as Mott-insulator which orders antiferromagnetically at $T_{\rm N}=146$ K. We report on results of thermal expansion and temperature dependent x-ray diffraction together with measurements of the heat capacity, electrical transport measurements, and optical spectroscopy in untwinned single crystals. At $T_{\rm N}$ significant structural changes appear, which are volume conserving. Concomitant anomalies are also observed in the dc-resistivity, in bulk modulus, and optical reflectivity spectra. We interpret these experimental observations as evidence of orbital order.
