Displacement of propagating squeezed microwave states

Displacement of propagating quantum states of light is a fundamental operation for quantum communication. It enables fundamental studies on macroscopic quantum coherence and plays an important role in quantum teleportation protocols with continuous variables. In our experiments we have successfully implemented this operation for propagating squeezed microwave states. We demonstrate that, even for strong displacement amplitudes, there is no degradation of the squeezing level in the reconstructed quantum states. Furthermore, we confirm that path entanglement generated by using displaced squeezed states stays constant over a wide range of the displacement power.

Tunable coupling of transmission-line microwave resonators mediated by an rf SQUID

We realize tunable coupling between two superconducting transmission line resonators. The coupling is mediated by a non-hysteretic rf SQUID acting as a flux-tunable mutual inductance between the resonators. From the mode distance observed in spectroscopy experiments, we derive a coupling strength ranging between -320MHz and 37 MHz. In the case where the coupling strength is about zero, the microwave power cross transmission between the two resonators can be reduced by almost four orders of magnitude compared to the case where the coupling is switched on. In addition, we observe parametric amplification by applying a suitable additional drive tone.

Orientation dependence of energy absorption and relaxation dynamics of $\text{C}_{60}$ in fs-laser pulses: How round is $\text{C}_{60}$?

By means of non-adiabatic quantum molecular dynamics it is shown, that the amount of energy deposited into $\text{C}_{60}$ by a short laser field strongly depends on the molecular orientation with respect to the laser polarization direction. In consequence, subsequent electron-vibration coupling leads to different nuclear relaxation mechanisms with mainly three pathways: (1) excitation of giant $\text{A}_g(1)$ modes ("breathing"), (2) formation of deformed cage-like complexes ("isomers"), fragmentation predominantly into two large pieces ("fission"). The results are in accord with and explain nicely already existing experimental data. Future experiments are proposed to confirm the detailed predictions.

Sub-10 nm colloidal lithography for integrated spin-photo-electronic devices

Colloidal lithography [1] is how patterns are reproduced in a variety of natural systems and is used more and more as an efficient fabrication tool in bio-, opto-, and nano-technology. Nanoparticles in the colloid are made to form a mask on a given material surface, which can then be transferred via etching into nano-structures of various sizes, shapes, and patterns [2,3]. Such nanostructures can be used in biology for detecting proteins [4] and DNA [5,6], for producing artificial crystals in photonics [7,8] and GHz oscillators in spin-electronics [9-14]. Scaling of colloidal patterning down to 10-nm and below, dimensions comparable or smaller than the main relaxation lengths in the relevant materials, including metals, is expected to enable a variety of new ballistic transport and photonic devices, such as spin-flip THz lasers [15]. In this work we extend the practice of colloidal lithography to producing large-area, near-ballistic-injection, sub-10 nm point-contact arrays and demonstrate their integration in to spin-photo-electronic devices.

Characterizing a fiber-based frequency comb with electro-optic modulator

We report on the characterization of a commercial-core fiber-based frequency comb equipped with an intracavity electro-optic modulator (EOM). We investigate the relationship between the noise of the pump diode and the laser relative intensity noise (RIN) and demonstrate the use of a low noise current supply to substantially reduce the laser RIN. By measuring several transfer functions, we evaluate the potentiality of the EOM for comb repetition rate stabilization. We also evaluate the coupling to other relevant parameters of the comb. From these measureemnts, we infer the capabilities of the femtosecond laser comb to generate very low phase noise microwave signals when phase locked to a high spectral purity ultra-stable laser.

Complete dynamics of H2+ in strong laser fields

Based on a combined quantum-classical treatment, a complete study of the strong field dynamics of H2+, i.e. including all nuclear and electronic DOF as well as dissociation and ionization, is presented. We find that the ro-vibrational nuclear dynamics enhances dissociation and, at the same time, suppresses ionization, confirming experimental observations by I. Ben-Itzhak et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 073002 (2005)]. In addition and counter-intuitively, it is shown that for large initial vibrational excitation ionization takes place favorably at large angles between the laser polarization and molecular axis. A local ionization model delivers a transparent explanation of these findings.

MOST observations of the roAp stars HD 9289, HD 99563, and HD 134214

We report on the analysis of high-precision space-based photometry of the roAp (rapidly oscillating Ap) stars HD 9289, HD 99563, and HD134214. All three stars were observed by the MOST satellite for more than 25 days, allowing unprecedented views of their pulsation. We find previously unknown candidate frequencies in all three stars. We establish the rotation period of HD 9289 (8.5 d) for the first time and show that the star is pulsating in two modes that show different mode geometries. We present a detailed analysis of HD 99563's mode multiplet and find a new candidate frequency which appears independent of the previously known mode. Finally, we report on 11 detected pulsation frequencies in HD 134214, 9 of which were never before detected in photometry, and 3 of which are completely new detections. Thanks to the unprecedentedly small frequency uncertainties, the p-mode spectrum of HD 134214 can be seen to have a well-defined large frequency spacing similar to the well-studied roAp star HD 24712 (HR 1217).

Semi-inclusive decays Lambda_b -> X_c + D_s^* at O(alpha_s) including Lambda_b and D_s^* polarization effects

In the leading order of the (1/m_b)-expansion in HQET the dominant contribution to the semi-inclusive decays of polarized Lambda_b baryons into the charm-strangeness mesons D_s and D_s^* is given by the partonic process b(up) -> c + (D_s^-, D_s^{*-}). Using standard values for the parameters of the process one expects a rather large branching ratio of approx. 8% into these two channels. In the factorization approximation the semi-inclusive decay of a polarized Lambda_b is governed by three unpolarized and four polarized structure functions for which we determine the nonperturbative O(1/m_b^2) corrections and the O(alpha_s) radiative corrections. We find that the perturbative and nonperturbative corrections amount to approx. 10% and approx. 3%, respectively. The seven structure functions can be measured through an analysis of the joint decay distributions of the process involving the polarization of the Lambda_b and the decays D_s^{*-} -> D_s^- + gamma and D_s^{*-} -> D_s^- + pi^0 for which we provide explicit forms. We also provide numerical results for the Cabibbo suppressed semi-inclusive decays Lambda_b -> X_u + (D_s, D_s^*).

Complete angular analysis of polarized top decay at O(alpha_s)

We calculate the O(alpha_s) radiative corrections to the three spin independent and five spin dependent structure functions that describe the angular decay distribution in the decay of a polarized top quark into a W-boson (followed by the decay W^{+} -> l^{+} + nu_l or by W^{+} -> anti-q + q and a bottom quark. The angular decay distribution is described in cascade fashion, i.e. the decay t(uparrow) -> W^{+} + X_b is analyzed in the top rest system while the subsequent decay W^{+} -> l^{+} + nu_l (or W^{+} -> anti-q + q) is analyzed in the W rest frame. We present our results for the eight O(alpha_s) integrated structure functions in analytical form keeping the mass of the bottom quark finite. In the limit m_b -> 0 the structure function expressions reduce to rather compact forms.

Experimental evidence for a spin-Peierls-transition in $α'-NaV_2O_5$

We present the first measurements of magnetisation and Raman light scattering on $α'-NaV_2O_5$ single crystals. Below 34 K, we observe a pronounced isotropic decrease of the susceptibility indicating the opening of a spin gap. The transition temperature is slightly field dependent. Raman experiments reveal a crystallographic distortion at the transition. Our results clearly establish $α'-NaV_2O_5$ to be the second inorganic spin-Peierls system.

Substitution effects on spin fluctuations in the spin-Peierls compound CuGeO_3

Using Raman scattering we studied the effect of substitutions on 1D spin fluctuations in CuGeO_3 observed as a spinon continuum in frustration induced exchange scattering. For temperatures below the spin-Peierls transition (T_{SP}=14K) the intensity of this continuum at 120-500 cm^{-1} is exponentially suppressed and transferred into a 3D two-magnon density of states. Besides a spin-Peierls gap-induced mode at 30 cm^{-1} and additional modes at 105 and 370 cm^{-1} are observed. Substitution of Zn on the Cu-site and Si on the Ge-site of CuGeO_3 quenches easily the spin-Peierls state. Consequently a suppression of the spin-Peierls gap observable below T_{SP}=14K as well as a change of the temperature dependence of the spinon continuum are observed. These effects are discussed in the context of a dimensional crossover of this compound below T_{SP} and strong spin-lattice interaction.
