Magnetic transition in the $J_\textrm{eff} = 1/2$ Kagomé system Sm$_3$Sb$_3$Zn$_2$O$_{14}$

We present a study of Sm$_3$Sb$_3$Zn$_2$O$_{14}$ (SSZO) through magnetization and specific heat capacity $C_p(T)$ measurements. SSZO contains well separated planes of Sm$^{3+}$ magnetic ions on a Kagomé lattice. Though our magnetic susceptibility (where the data are limited down to 2\,K) does not show any anomaly, the $C_p(T)$ data which have been taken down to 0.35 K reveal a broad maximum at $T\sim1.5$\,K followed by a sharp peak at $T\sim0.5$\,K indicative of short-range correlations and long-range order, respectively.

Structural 130-K Phase Transition and Emergence of a Two-Ion Kondo State in HT-Ce$_2$Rh$_2$Ga Explored by $^{69,71}$Ga Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance

We have studied the microscopic magnetic properties, the nature of the 130-K phase transition, and the ground state in the recently synthesized compound Ce$_2$Rh$_2$Ga by use of $^{69,71}$Ga nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR). The NQR spectra clearly show an unusual phase transition at $T_t$ $\sim$ 130 K yielding a splitting of the high-temperature single NQR line into two clearly resolved NQR lines, providing evidence for two crystallographically inequivalent Ga sites. The NQR frequencies are in good agreement with fully-relativistic calculations of the band structure. Our NQR results indicate the absence of magnetic or charge order down to 0.3 K. The temperature dependence of the spin-lattice relaxation rate, 1/$T_1$, shows three distinct regimes, with onset temperatures at $T_t$ and 2 K. The temperature-independent 1/$T_1$, observed between $T_t$ and 2 K, crosses over to a Korringa process, 1/$T_1$ $\propto$ $T$, below $\sim$ 2 K, which evidences a rare two-ion Kondo scenario: the system goes into a dense Kondo coherent state at 2.0 and 0.8 K for the two different Ga sites.

Freezing of molecular rotation in a paramagnetic crystal studied by $^{31}$P NMR

We present a detailed $^{31}$P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) study of the molecular rotation in the compound [Cu(pz)$_{2}$(2-HOpy)$_{2}$](PF$_{6}$)$_{2}$, where pz = C$_4$H$_4$N$_2$ and 2-HOpy = C$_5$H$_4$NHO. Here, a freezing of the PF$_6$ rotation modes is revealed by several steplike increases of the temperature-dependent second spectral moment, with accompanying broad peaks of the longitudinal and transverse nuclear spin-relaxation rates. An analysis based on the Bloembergen-Purcell-Pound (BPP) theory quantifies the related activation energies as $E_{a}/k_{B}$ = 250 and 1400 K. Further, the anisotropy of the second spectral moment of the $^{31}$P absorption line was calculated for the rigid lattice, as well as in the presence of several sets of PF$_6$ reorientation modes, and is in excellent agreement with the experimental data. Whereas the anisotropy of the frequency shift and enhancement of nuclear spin-relaxation rates is driven by the molecular rotation with respect to the dipole fields stemming from the Cu ions, the second spectral moment is determined by the intramolecular interaction of nuclear $^{19}$F and $^{31}$P moments in the presence of the distinct rotation modes.

Quasi-one-dimensional magnetism in the spin-$\frac12$ antiferromagnet BaNa$_{2}$Cu(VO$_{4}$)$_{2}$

We report synthesis and magnetic properties of quasi-one-dimensional spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain compound BaNa$_2$Cu(VO$_4$)$_2$. This orthovanadate has a centrosymmetric crystal structure, $C2/c$, where the magnetic Cu$^{2+}$ ions form spin chains. These chains are arranged in layers, with the chain direction changing by 62$^0$ between the two successive layers. Alternatively, the spin lattice can be viewed as anisotropic triangular layers upon taking the inter-chain interactions into consideration. Despite this potential structural complexity, temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, ESR intensity, and NMR shift agree well with the uniform spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg chain model with an intrachain coupling of $J/k_{\rm B} \simeq 5.6$ K. The saturation field obtained from the magnetic isotherm measurement consistently reproduces the value of $J/k_{\rm B}$. Further, the $^{51}$V NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate mimics the 1D character in the intermediate temperature range, whereas magnetic long-range order sets in below $T_{\rm N} \simeq 0.25$ K. The effective interchain coupling is estimated to be $J_{\perp}/k_{\rm B} \simeq 0.1$ K. The theoretical estimation of exchange couplings using band-structure calculations reciprocate our experimental findings and unambiguously establish the 1D character of the compound. Finally, the spin lattice of BaNa$_2$Cu(VO$_4$)$_2$ is compared with the chemically similar but not isostructural compound BaAg$_2$Cu(VO$_4)_2$.

Extremely well isolated 2D spin-$1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg layers with small exchange coupling in the molecular-based magnet CuPOF

We report on a comprehensive characterization of the newly synthesized Cu$^{2+}$-based molecular magnet [Cu(pz)$_2$(2-HOpy)$_2$](PF$_6$)$_2$ (CuPOF), where pz = C$_4$H$_4$N$_2$ and 2-HOpy = C$_5$H$_4$NHO. From a comparison of theoretical modeling to results of bulk magnetometry, specific heat, $μ^+$SR, ESR, and NMR spectroscopy, this material is determined as an excellent realization of the 2D square-lattice $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with a moderate intraplane nearest-neighbor exchange coupling of $J/k_\mathrm{B} = 6.80(5)$ K, and an extremely small interlayer interaction of about 1 mK. At zero field, the bulk magnetometry reveals a temperature-driven crossover of spin correlations from isotropic to $XY$ type, caused by the presence of a weak intrinsic easy-plane anisotropy. A transition to long-range order, driven by the low-temperature $XY$ anisotropy under the influence of the interlayer coupling, occurs at $T_\mathrm{N} = 1.38(2)$ K, as revealed by $μ^+$SR. In applied magnetic fields, our $^1$H-NMR data reveal a strong increase of the magnetic anisotropy, manifested by a pronounced enhancement of the transition temperature to commensurate long-range order at $T_\mathrm{N} =2.8$ K and 7 T.

Magnetic Properties of an Effective Spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Triangular-Lattice Compound LiYbS$_2$

Here, we report the synthesis and magnetic properties of a Yb-based triangular-lattice compound LiYbS$_2$. At low temperatures, it features an effective spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ state due to the combined effect of crystal electric field and spin orbit coupling. Magnetic susceptibility measurements and $^7$Li nuclear magnetic resonance experiments reveal the absence of magnetic long range ordering down to 2~K, which suggests a possible quantum spin liquid ground state. A dominant antiferromagnetic nearest neighbour exchange interaction $J/k_{\rm B}\simeq$ 5.3~K could be extracted form the magnetic susceptibility. The NMR linewidth analysis yields the coupling constant between the Li nuclei and Yb$^{3+}$ ions which was found to be purely dipolar in nature.

Signatures of a spin-1/2 cooperative paramagnet in the diluted triangular lattice of Y$_2$CuTiO$_6$

We present a combination of thermodynamic and dynamic experimental signatures of a disorder driven dynamic cooperative paramagnet in a 50% site diluted triangular lattice spin-1/2 system, Y$_2$CuTiO$_6$. Magnetic ordering and spin freezing are absent down to 50 mK, far below the Curie Weiss scale of ~-134 K. We observe scaling collapses of the magnetic field- and temperature-dependent magnetic heat capacity and magnetisation data, respectively, in conformity with expectations from the random singlet physics. Our experiments establish the suppression of any freezing scale, if at all present, by more than three orders of magnitude, opening a plethora of interesting possibilities such as disorder-stabilized long range quantum entangled ground states.

Two types of alternating spin-$\frac12$ chains and their field-induced transitions in $\varepsilon$-LiVOPO$_4$

Thermodynamic properties, $^{31}$P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements, and density-functional band-structure calculations for $\varepsilon$-LiVOPO$_4$ are reported. This quantum magnet features a singlet ground state and comprises two types of alternating spin-$\frac12$ chains that manifest themselves by the double maxima in the susceptibility and magnetic specific heat, and by the two-step magnetization process with an intermediate $\frac12$-plateau. From thermodynamic data and band-structure calculations, we estimate the leading couplings of $J_1\simeq 20$ K and $J_2\simeq 60$ K and the alternation ratios of $α_1=J_1'/J_1\simeq 0.6$ and $α_2=J_2'/J_2\simeq 0.3$ within the two chains, respectively. The zero-field spin gap $Δ_0/k_{\rm B}\simeq 7.3$ K probed by thermodynamic and NMR measurements is caused by the $J_1$-$J_1'$ spin chains and can be closed in the applied field of $μ_{0}H_{\rm c1}\simeq 5.6$ T, giving rise to a field-induced long-range order. The NMR data reveal predominant three-dimensional spin-spin correlations at low temperatures. Field-induced magnetic ordering transition observed above $H_{c1}$ is attributed to the Bose-Einstein condensation of triplons in the sublattice formed by the $J_1$-$J_1'$ chains with weaker exchange couplings.

Anisotropic field-induced ordering in the triangular-lattice quantum spin liquid NaYbSe$_2$

High-quality single crystals of NaYbSe$_2$, which resembles a perfect triangular-lattice antiferromagnet without the intrinsic disorder, are investigated by magnetization and specific heat, as well as the local probe techniques nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electron spin resonance (ESR). The low-field measurements confirm the absence of any spin freezing or long-range magnetic order down to 50~mK, which suggests a quantum spin liquid ground (QSL) state with gapless excitations. The instability of the QSL state is observed upon applying magnetic fields. For the $H\bot c$ direction, a field-induced magnetic phase transition is observed above 2~T from the $C_{\rm p}(T)$ data, agreeing with a clear $\frac{M_s}{3}$ plateau of $M(H)$, which is associated with an up-up-down (uud) spin arrangement. For the $H\|c$ direction, a field-induced transition could be evidenced at a much higher field range (9 - 21~T). The $^{23}$Na NMR measurements provide microscopic evidence for field-induced ordering for both directions. A reentrant behavior of $T_{\rm N}$, originating from the thermal and quantum spin fluctuations, is observed for both directions. The anisotropic exchange interactions $J_{\perp}\simeq$ 4.7~K and $J_z\simeq$2.33~K are extracted from the modified bond-dependent XXZ model for the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ triangular-lattice antiferromagnet. The absence of magnetic long-range order at zero fields is assigned to the effect of strong bond-frustration, arising from the complex spin-orbit entangled $4f$ ground state. Finally, we derive the highly anisotropic magnetic phase diagram, which is discussed in comparison with the existing theoretical models for spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ triangular-lattice antiferromagnets.

Commensurate and incommensurate magnetic order in spin-1 chains stacked on the triangular lattice in Li$_2$NiW$_2$O$_8$

We report thermodynamic properties, magnetic ground state, and microscopic magnetic model of the spin-1 frustrated antiferromaget Li$_{2}$NiW$_{2}$O$_{8}$ showing successive transitions at $T_{\rm N1}\simeq 18$ K and $T_{\rm N2}\simeq 12.5$ K in zero field. Nuclear magnetic resonance and neutron diffraction reveal collinear and commensurate magnetic order with the propagation vector $\mathbf k=(\frac12,0,\frac12)$ below $T_{\rm N2}$. The ordered moment of 1.8 $μ_B$ at 1.5 K is directed along $[0.89(9),-0.10(5),-0.49(6)]$ and matches the magnetic easy axis of spin-1 Ni$^{2+}$ ions, which is determined by the scissor-like distortion of the NiO$_6$ octahedra. Incommensurate magnetic order, presumably of spin-density-wave type, is observed in the region between $T_{\rm N2}$ and $T_{\rm N1}$. Density-functional band-structure calculations put forward a three-dimensional spin lattice with spin-1 chains running along the $[01\bar 1]$ direction and stacked on a spatially anisotropic triangular lattice in the $ab$ plane. We show that the collinear magnetic order in Li$_2$NiW$_2$O$_8$ is incompatible with the triangular lattice geometry and thus driven by a pronounced easy-axis single-ion anisotropy of Ni$^{2+}$.

Scaling Study and Thermodynamic Properties of the cubic Helimagnet FeGe

The critical behavior of the cubic helimagnet FeGe was obtained from isothermal magnetization data in very close vicinity of the ordering temperature. A thorough and consistent scaling analysis of these data revealed the critical exponents $β=0.368$, $γ=1.382$, and $δ=4.787$. The anomaly in the specific heat associated with the magnetic ordering can be well described by the critical exponent $α=-0.133$. The values of these exponents corroborate that the magnetic phase transition in FeGe belongs to the isotropic 3D-Heisenberg universality class. The specific heat data are well described by ab initio phonon calculations and confirm the localized character of the magnetic moments.

Spin Liquid State in the 3D Frustrated Antiferromagnet PbCuTe2O6: NMR and muSR Studies

PbCuTe2O6 is a rare example of a spin liquid candidate featuring a three dimensional magnetic lattice. Strong geometric frustration arises from the dominant antiferromagnetic interaction which generates a hyperkagome network of Cu2+ ions although additional interactions enhance the magnetic lattice connectivity. Through a combination of magnetization measurements and local probe investigation by NMR and muSR down to 20 mK, we provide a robust evidence for the absence of magnetic freezing in the ground state. The local spin susceptibility probed by the NMR shift hardly deviates from the macroscopic one down to 1 K pointing to a homogeneous magnetic system with a low defect concentration. The saturation of the NMR shift and the sublinear power law temperature (T) evolution of the 1/T1 NMR relaxation rate at low T point to a non-singlet ground state favoring a gapless fermionic description of the magnetic excitations. Below 1 K a pronounced slowing down of the spin dynamics is witnessed, which may signal a reconstruction of spinon Fermi surface. Nonetheless, the compound remains in a fluctuating spin liquid state down to the lowest temperature of the present investigation.

Anisotropic Ru3+ 4d5 magnetism in the alpha-RuCl3 honeycomb system: susceptibility, specific heat and Zero field NMR

Hexagonal alpha-Ru trichloride single crystals exhibit a strong magnetic anisotropy and we show that upon applying fields up to 14 T in the honeycomb plane the successive magnetic order at T1 = 14 K and T2 = 8 K could be completely suppressed whereas in the perpendicular direction the magnetic order is robust. Furthermore the field dependence of chi(T) implies coexisting ferro- and antiferromagnetic exchange between in-plane components of Ru^3+-spins, whereas for out-of-plane components a strong antiferromagnetic exchange becomes evident. 101^Ru zero-field nuclear magnetic resonance in the ordered state evidence a complex (probably non coplanar chiral) long-range magnetic structure. The large orbital moment on Ru^3+ is found in density-functional calculations.

Frustrated three-dimensional antiferromagnet Li$_{2}$CuW$_{2}$O$_{8}$: $^7$Li NMR and the effect of non-magnetic dilution

We report a $^7$Li nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) study of a frustrated three-dimensional \mbox{spin-$\frac12$} antiferromagnet Li$_{2}$CuW$_{2}$O$_{8}$ and also explore the effect of non-magnetic dilution. The magnetic long-range ordering in the parent compound at $T_{\rm N}\simeq$ 3.9~K was detected from the drastic line broadening and a peak in the spin-lattice relaxation rate ($1/T_1$). The NMR spectrum above $T_{\rm N}$ broadens systematically, and its full width at half maximum (FWHM) tracks the static spin susceptibility. From the analysis of FWHM vs. static susceptibility, the coupling between the Li nuclei and Cu$^{2+}$ ions was found to be purely dipolar in nature. The magnitude of the maximum exchange coupling constant is $J_{\rm max}/k_{\rm B}\simeq 13$\,K. NMR spectra below $T_{\rm N}$ broaden abruptly and transform into a double-horn pattern reflecting the commensurate nature of the spin structure in the ordered state. Below $T_{\rm N}$, 1/$T_1$ follows a $T^5$ behavior. The frustrated nature of the compound is confirmed by persistent magnetic correlations at high temperatures well above $T_{\rm N}$. The dilution of the spin lattice with non-magnetic Zn atoms has dramatic influence on $T_N$ that decreases exponentially similar to quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnets, even though Li$_2$CuW$_2$O$_8$ has only a weak one-dimensional anisotropy. Heat capacity of doped samples follows power law ($C_{\rm p} \propto T^α$) below $T_{\rm N}$, and the exponent ($α$) decreases from 3 in the parent compound to 1 in the 25\% doped sample.

Sc_{2}Ga_{2}CuO_{7}: A possible Quantum spin liquid near the percolation threshold

Sc$_{2}$Ga$_{2}$CuO$_{7}$ (SGCO) crystallizes in a hexagonal structure (space group: $P$$6$$_{3}/mmc$),\textcolor{black}{{} which can be seen as an alternating stacking of single and double triangular layers. Combining neutron, x-ray, and resonant x-ray diffraction we establish that the single triangular layers are mainly populated by non-magnetic Ga$^{3+}$ ions (85\% Ga and 15\% Cu), while the bi-layers have comparable population of Cu$^{2+}$ and Ga$^{3+}$} ions \textcolor{black}{(43\% Cu and 57\% Ga)}. Our susceptibility measurements in the temperature range 1.8 - 400 K give no indication of any spin-freezing or magnetic long-range order (LRO). We infer an effective paramagnetic moment $μ_{eff}=1.79\pm0.09$ $μ_{B}$ and a Curie-Weiss temperature $θ_{CW}$ of about $-44$ K, suggesting antiferromagnetic interactions between the Cu$^{2+}$($S=1/2$) ions. Low-temperature neutron powder diffraction data showed no evidence for LRO down to 1.5 K. In our specific heat data as well, no anomalies were found down to 0.35 K, in the field range 0-140 kOe.\textcolor{black}{{} The magnetic specific heat, $C_{m}$, exhibits a broad maximum at around 2.5 K followed by a nearly power law $C$$_{m}$$\propto$ $T$$^α$ behavior at lower temperatures, with $α$ increasing from }0.3\textcolor{black}{{} to} 1.9\textcolor{black}{{} as a function of field for fields upto 90 kOe and then remaining at 1.9 for fields upto 140 kOe. Our results point to a disordered ground state in SGCO. }

Towards ferromagnetic quantum criticality in FeGa3-xGex: 71Ga NQR as a zero field microscopic probe

71Ga NQR, magnetization and specific heat measurements have been performed on polycrystalline Ge doped FeGa3 samples. A crossover from an insulator to a correlated local moment metal in the low doping regime and the evolution of itinerant ferromagnet upon further doping is found. For the nearly critical concentration at the threshold of ferromagnetic order, xC=0.15, (1/T1T) exhibits a pronounced T4/3 power law over two orders of magnitude in temperature which indicates 3D quantum critical ferromagnetic fluctuations. Furthermore, for the ordered x = 0.2 sample (TC = 6 K) 1/T1T could be fitted well in the frame of Moriya's SCR theory for weakly FM systems with 1/T1T proportional to chi. In contrast to this, the low doping regime nicely displays local moment behavior where 1/T1T proportional to chi2 is valid. For temperature tending to zero the Sommerfeld ratio = (C/T) is enhanced (70 mJ/mole-K2 for x = 0.1) which indicates the formation of heavy 3d-electrons.

Contiguous 3d and 4f magnetism: towards strongly correlated 3d electrons in YbFe2Al10

We present magnetization, specific heat, and 27Al NMR investigations on YbFe2Al10 over a wide range in temperature and magnetic field. The magnetic susceptibility at low temperatures is strongly enhanced at weak magnetic fields, accompanied by a ln(T0/T) divergence of the low-T specific heat coefficient in zero field, which indicates a ground state of correlated electrons. From our hard X-ray photo emission spectroscopy (HAXPES) study, the Yb valence at 50 K is evaluated to be 2.38. The system displays valence fluctuating behavior in the low to intermediate temperature range, whereas above 400 K, Yb3+ carries a full and stable moment, and Fe carries a moment of about 3.1 mB. The enhanced value of the Sommerfeld Wilson ratio and the dynamic scaling of spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by T [27(1/T1T)] with static susceptibility suggests admixed ferromagnetic correlations. 27(1/T1T) simultaneously tracks the valence fluctuations from the 4f -Yb ions in the high temperature range and field dependent antiferromagnetic correlations among partially Kondo screened Fe 3d moments at low temperature, the latter evolve out of an Yb 4f admixed conduction band.

Hindered magnetic order from mixed dimensionalities in CuP$_2$O$_6$

We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of the spin-1/2 compound CuP$_2$O$_6$ that features a network of two-dimensional (2D) antiferromagnetic (AFM) square planes, interconnected via one-dimensional (1D) AFM spin chains. Magnetic susceptibility, high-field magnetization, and electron spin resonance (ESR) data, as well as microscopic density-functional band-structure calculations and subsequent quantum Monte-Carlo simulations, show that the coupling $J_{2D}\sim$ 40 K in the layers is an order of magnitude larger than $J_{1D}\sim$ 4 K in the chains. Below $T_N\sim$ 8 K, CuP$_2$O$_6$ develops long-range order (LRO), as evidenced by a weak net moment on the 2D planes induced by anisotropic magnetic interactions of Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya type. A striking feature of this 3D ordering transition is that the 1D moments grow significantly slower than the ones on the 2D layers, which is evidenced by the persistent paramagnetic ESR signal below $T_N$. Compared to typical quasi-2D magnets, the ordering temperature of CuP$_2$O$_6$ $T_N/J_{2D}\sim$ 0.2 is unusually low, showing that weakly coupled spins sandwiched between 2D magnetic units effectively decouple these units and impede the long-range ordering.

Magnetic properties and heat capacity of the three-dimensional frustrated S=1/2 antiferromagnet PbCuTe2O6

We report magnetic susceptibility (chi) and heat capacity Cp measurements along with ab-initio electronic structure calculations on PbCuTe2O6, a compound made up of a three dimensional 3D network of corner-shared triangular units. The presence of antiferromagnetic interactions is inferred from a Curie-Weiss temperature (theta_CW) of about -22 K from the chi(T) data. The magnetic heat capacity (Cm) data show a broad maximum at T^max ~ 1.15 K (i.e. T^max/theta_CW ~ 0.05), which is analogous to the the observed broad maximum in the Cm/T data of a hyper-Kagome system, Na4Ir3O8. In addition, Cm data exhibit a weak kink at T^* ~ 0.87 K. While the T^max is nearly unchanged, the T^* is systematically suppressed in an increasing magnetic field (H) up to 80 kOe. For H > 80 kOe, the Cm data at low temperatures exhibit a characteristic power-law (T^α) behavior with an exponent α slightly less than 2. Hopping integrals obtained from the electronic structure calculations show the presence of strongly frustrated 3D spin interactions along with non-negligible unfrustrated couplings. Our results suggest that PbCuTe2O6 is a candidate material for realizing a 3D quantum spin liquid state at high magnetic fields.

Complex Chiral Modulations in FeGe close to Magnetic Ordering

We report on detailed polarized small-angle neutron scattering on cubic FeGe in magnetic fields applied either along (transverse) the scattering vector or parallel (longitudinal)to the neutron beam. The ($H,T$) phase diagrams for all principal axes contain a segmented $A$-phase region just below the onset of magnetic order. Hexagonal Bragg-spot patterns were observed across the entire $A$-phase region for the longitudinal geometry. Scattering intensity was observed in parts of the A phase for both scattering configurations. Only in a distinct pocket ($A_1$) vanishing scattering intensity was found in the transverse geometry.

Interplay between localized and itinerant magnetism in Co substituted FeGa$_3$

The evolution of the electronic structure and magnetic properties with Co substitution for Fe in the solid solution Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Ga$_3$ was studied by means of electrical resistivity, magnetization, ab-initio band structure calculations, and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation $1/T_1$ of the $^{69,71}$Ga nuclei. Temperature dependencies of the electrical resistivity reveal that the evolution from the semiconducting to the metallic state in the Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Ga$_3$ system occurs at $0.025<x<0.075$. The $^{69,71}(1/T_1)$ was studied as a function of temperature in a wide temperature range of $2\!-\!300$ K for the concentrations $x = 0.0,$ $0.5,$ and $1.0$. In the parent semiconducting compound FeGa$_3$, the temperature dependence of the $^{69}(1/T_1)$ exhibits a huge maximum at about $T\!\sim\!6$ K indicating the existence of in-gap states. The opposite binary compound, CoGa$_3$, demonstrates a metallic Korringa behavior with $1/T_1$ $\propto T$. In Fe$_{0.5}$Co$_{0.5}$Ga$_3$, the relaxation is strongly enhanced due to spin fluctuations and follows $1/T_1\propto T^{1/2}$, which is a unique feature of weakly and nearly antiferromagnetic metals. This itinerant antiferromagnetic behavior contrasts with both magnetization measurements, showing localized magnetism with a relatively low effective moment of about 0.7 $μ_B$/f.u., and ab initio band structure calculations, where a ferromagnetic state with an ordered moment of 0.5 $μ_B$/f.u. is predicted. The results are discussed in terms of the interplay betwen the localized and itinerant magnetizm including in-gap states and spin fluctuations.

Magnetization and spin dynamics of the spin S=1/2 hourglass nanomagnet Cu5(OH)2(NIPA)4*10H2O

We report a combined experimental and theoretical study of the spin S=1/2 nanomagnet Cu5(OH)2(NIPA)4*10H2O (Cu5-NIPA). Using thermodynamic, electron spin resonance and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance measurements on one hand, and ab initio density-functional band-structure calculations, exact diagonalizations and a strong coupling theory on the other, we derive a microscopic magnetic model of Cu5-NIPA and characterize the spin dynamics of this system. The elementary five-fold Cu2+ unit features an hourglass structure of two corner-sharing scalene triangles related by inversion symmetry. Our microscopic Heisenberg model comprises one ferromagnetic and two antiferromagnetic exchange couplings in each triangle, stabilizing a single spin S=1/2 doublet ground state (GS), with an exactly vanishing zero-field splitting (by Kramer's theorem), and a very large excitation gap of Δ~68 K. Thus, Cu5-NIPA is a good candidate for achieving long electronic spin relaxation (T1) and coherence (T2) times at low temperatures, in analogy to other nanomagnets with low-spin GS's. Of particular interest is the strongly inhomogeneous distribution of the GS magnetic moment over the five Cu2+ spins. This is a purely quantum-mechanical effect since, despite the non-frustrated nature of the magnetic couplings, the GS is far from the classical collinear ferrimagnetic configuration. Finally, Cu5-NIPA is a rare example of a S=1/2 nanomagnet showing an enhancement in the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 at intermediate temperatures.

Unconventional magnetism in multivalent charge-ordered YbPtGe$_2$ probed by $^{195}$Pt- and $^{171}$Yb-NMR

Detailed $^{195}$Pt- and $^{171}$Yb nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies on the heterogeneous mixed valence system YbPtGe$_2$ are reported. The temperature dependence of the $^{195}$Pt-NMR shift $^{195}K(T)$ indicates the opening of an unusual magnetic gap below 200\,K. $^{195}K(T)$ was analyzed by a thermal activation model which yields an isotropic gap $Δ/k_B \approx 200$\,K. In contrast, the spin-lattice relaxation rate $^{195}$($1/T_1$) does not provide evidence for the gap. Therefore, an intermediate-valence picture is proposed while a Kondo-insulator scenario can be excluded. Moreover, $^{195}$($1/T_1$) follows a simple metallic behavior, similar to the reference compound YPtGe$_2$. A well resolved NMR line with small shift is assigned to divalent $^{171}$Yb. This finding supports the proposed model with two sub-sets of Yb species (di- and trivalent) located on the Yb2 and Yb1 site of the YbPtGe$_2$ lattice.

^31P NMR investigations on the ferromagnetic quantum critical system YbNi_4P_2

We studied the new heavy-fermion system YbNi$_{4}$P$_{2}$, which presents strong ferromagnetic correlations, using the local $^{31}$P NMR probe over a wide field (0.2-8.6 \textsf{T}) and temperature (1.8-200 K) range. $^{31}$P NMR Knight shift provides the static spin susceptibility which tracks the bulk susceptibility whereas the spin-lattice relaxation rate $^{31}(1/T_{1}$) provide information about the fluctuations of the Yb 4f moment. The Korringa law is valid over a wide range in temperature and field. The Korringa product $^{31}(1/T_{1}TK^{2}$S$_{0}$) $\ll$ 1 gives evidence for the presence of strong ferromagnetic correlations. Over two decades in temperature a $^{31}(1/T_{1}T) \sim T^{-3/4}$ behaviour was found.

119Sn solid state NMR and Mössbauer spectroscopic studies of the intermediate-valent stannide CeRuSn

The ternary stannide CeRuSn is a static mixed-valent cerium compound with an or-dering of trivalent and intermediate-valent cerium on two distinct crystallographic sites. 119Sn Mössbauer spectra showed two electronically almost identical tin atoms at 323 K, while at 298 K and below (77 and 4.2 K) two tin sites can clearly be distinguished. 119Sn solid state NMR experiments are performed to probe the local hyperfine fields at the two different Sn sites. 119Sn NMR powder spectra are nicely fitted with two Sn sites with nearly the same magnetic anisotropy, but with different absolute shift values. Both Sn sites are strongly affected by crossover-like transitions between 100 and 280 K. This local-site study confirms the superstructure modulations found in previous investiga-tions. Towards lower temperatures the powder spectra are broadened giving strong evidence for the antiferromagnetically ordered ground state.

We report on magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements of the cubic helimagnet FeGe in external magnetic fields and temperatures near the onset of long-range magnetic order at T_C=278.2(3)K. Pronounced anomalies in the field-dependent chi_ac(H) data as well as in the corresponding imaginary part chi"_ac(H) reveal a precursor region around T_C in the magnetic phase diagram. The occurrence of a maximum at T_0=279.6K in the zero-field specific heat data indicates a second order transition into a magnetically ordered state. A shoulder evolves above this maximum as a magnetic field is applied. The field dependence of both features coincides with crossover lines from the field-polarized to the paramagnetic state deduced from chi_ac(T) at constant magnetic fields. The experimental findings are analyzed within the standard Dzyaloshinskii theory for cubic helimagnets. The remarkable multiplicity of modulated precursor states and the complexity of the magnetic phase diagram near the magnetic ordering are explained by the change of the character of solitonic inter-core interactions and the onset of specific confined chiral modulations in this area.

Ferromagnetic Ordering in CeIr2B2: Transport, magnetization, specific heat and NMR studies

We present a complete characterization of ferromagnetic system CeIr2B2 using powder x-ray diffraction XRD, magnetic susceptibility chi(T), isothermal magnetization M(H), specific heat C(T), electrical resistivity rho(T,H), and thermoelectric power S(T) measurements. Furthermore 11B NMR study was performed to probe the magnetism on a microscopic scale. The chi(T), C(T) and rho(T) data confirm bulk ferromagnetic ordering with Tc = 5.1 K. Ce ions in CeIr2B2 are in stable trivalent state. Our low-temperature C(T) data measured down to 0.4 K yield Sommerfeld coefficient gamma = 73(4) mJ/molK2 which is much smaller than the previously reported value of gamma = 180 mJ/molK2 deduced from the specific heat measurement down to 2.5 K. For LaIr2B2 gamma = 6(1) mJ/molK2 which implies the density of states at the Fermi level D(EF) = 2.54 states/(eV f.u.) for both spin directions. The renormalization factor for quasi-particle density of states and hence for quasi-particle mass due to 4f correlations in CeIr2B2 is 12. The Kondo temperature TK ~ 4 K is estimated from the jump in specific heat of CeIr2B2 at Tc. Both C(T) and rho(T) data exhibit gapped-magnon behavior in magnetically ordered state with an energy gap Eg ~ 3.5 K. The rho data as a function of magnetic field H indicate a large negative magnetoresistance (MR) which is highest for T = 5 K.While at 5 K the negative MR keeps on increasing up to 10 T, at 2 K an upturn is observed near H = 3.5 T. On the other hand, the thermoelectric power data have small absolute values (S ~ 7 μV/K) indicating a weak Kondo interaction. A shoulder in S(T) at about 30 K followed by a minimum at ~ 10 K is attributed to crystal electric field (CEF) effects and the onset of magnetic ordering. 11B NMR line broadening provides strong evidence of ferromagnetic correlations below 40 K.

Interplay between Fe 3d and Ce 4f magnetism and Kondo interaction in CeFeAs_{1-x}P_{x}O probed by ^{75}As and ^{31}P NMR

A detailed $^{31}$P (I=1/2) and $^{75}$As (I=3/2) NMR study on polycrystalline CeFeAs$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$O alloys is presented. The magnetism of CeFeAsO changes drastically upon P substitution on the As site. CeFePO is a heavy fermion system without long range order whereas CeFeAsO exhibits a Fe-3$d$ SDW type of ordering accompanied by a structural transition from tetragonal ($TT$) to orthorhombic ($OT$) structure. Furthermore Ce-4$f^{1}$ orders antiferromagnetically (AFM) at low temperature. At the critical concentration where the Fe-magnetism is diminished the Ce-Ce interaction changes to a ferromagnetic (FM) type of ordering. Three representative samples of the CeFeAs$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$O ($x$=0.05, 0.3 and 0.9) series are systematically investigated. 1) For the $x$=0.05 alloy a drastic change of the line width at 130 K indicates the AFM-SDW type of ordering of Fe and the structural change from $TT$ to $OT$ phase. The line width roughly measures the internal field in the ordered state and the transition is most likely first order. The small and nearly constant shift for $^{31}$P and $^{75}$As suggests the presence of competing hyperfine interactions between the nuclear spins and the 4$f$ and 3$d$ ions of Ce and Fe. 2) For the $x$=0.3 alloy, evolution of the Fe-SDW type order takes place at around 70 K corroborating the results of bulk measurement and $μSR$. Here we found strong evidence for phase separation of paramagnetic and magnetic SDW phases. 3) In contrast to heavy fermion CeFePO for the $x$=0.9 alloy a phase transition is found at 2 K. The field-dependent NMR shift gives strong evidence of FM ordering. Above the ordering the spin lattice relaxation rate $^{31}$(1/T$_{1}$) shows unconventional, non-Korringa like behaviour which indicates a complex interplay of Kondo and FM fluctuations.

Low field extension for magnetometers (TinyBee) used for investigations on low-dimensional superconductors with Bc1 < 5G

In this article a simple and easy to install low magnetic field extension of the SQUID magnetometer Quantum Design MPMS-7 is described. This has been accomplished by complementing the MPMS-7 magnet control system with a laboratory current supply for the low magnetic field region (B \leq 200G). This hard- and software upgrade provides a significant gain in the magnetic field accuracy up to an order of magnitude compared with the standard instrument's setup and is improving the resolution to better than 0.01G below 40G. The field control has been integrated into the Quantum Design MultiVu software for a transparent and user-friendly operation of this extension. The improvements achieved are especially useful, when low magnetic field strengths (B < 1G) are required at high precision. The specific advantages of this application are illustrated by sophisticated magnetic characterisation of lowdimensional superconductors like Sc3CoC4 and SnSe2{Co(η-C5H5)2}x.

Spin liquid behaviour in Jeff=1/2 triangular lattice Ba3IrTi2O9

Ba3IrTi2O9 crystallizes in a hexagonal structure consisting of a layered triangular arrangement of Ir4+ (Jeff=1/2). Magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity data show no magnetic ordering down to 0.35K inspite of a strong magnetic coupling as evidenced by a large Curie-Weiss temperature=-130K. The magnetic heat capacity follows a power law at low temperature. Our measurements suggest that Ba3IrTi2O9 is a 5d, Ir-based (Jeff=1/2), quantum spin liquid on a 2D triangular lattice.

Magnetism and superconductivity in Eu0.2Sr0.8(Fe0.86Co0.14)2As2 probed by 75As NMR

We report bulk superconductivity (SC) in Eu$_{0.2}$Sr$_{0.8}$(Fe$_{0.86}$Co$_{0.14}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ single crystals by means of electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements with $T$$_{\mathrm{c}}$ $\simeq$ 20 K with an antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering of Eu$^{2+}$ moments at $T$$_{\mathrm{N}}$ $\simeq$ 2.0 K in zero field. $^{75}$As NMR experiments have been performed in the two external field directions (H$\|ab$) and (H$\|c$). $^{75}$As-NMR spectra are analyzed in terms of first order quadrupolar interaction. Spin-lattice relaxation rates (1/$T_{1}$) follow a $T^{3}$ law in the temperature range 4.2-15 K. There is no signature of Hebel-Slichter coherence peak just below the SC transition indicating a non s-wave or s$_{\pm}$ type of superconductivity. The increase of 1/$T_{1}T$ with lowering the temperature in the range 160-18 K following $\frac{C}{T+θ}$ law reflecting 2D AFM spin fluctuations.

Precursor phenomena at the magnetic ordering of the cubic helimagnet FeGe

We report on detailed magnetic measurements on the cubic helimagnet FeGe in external magnetic fields and temperatures near the onset of long-range magnetic order at $T_C= 278.2(3)$ K. Precursor phenomena display a complex succession of temperature-driven crossovers and phase transitions in the vicinity of $T_C$. The A-phase region, present below $T_C$ and fields $H<0.5$ kOe, is split in several pockets. Relying on a modified phenomenological theory for chiral magnets, the main part of the A-phase could indicate the existence of a $+π$ Skyrmion lattice, the adjacent A$_2$ pocket, however, appears to be related to helicoids propagating in directions perpendicular to the applied field.

CeRu$_4$Sn$_6$: heavy fermions emerging from a Kondo-insulating state

The combination of low-temperature specific-heat and nuclear-magnetic-resonance (NMR) measurements reveals important information of the ground-state properties of CeRu$_4$Sn$_6$, which has been proposed as a rare example of a tetragonal Kondo-insulator (KI). The NMR spin-latticerelaxation rate $1/T_1$ deviates from the Korringa law below 100 K signaling the onset of an energy gap $ΔE_g1/k_B \simeq 30$K. This gap is stable against magnetic fields up to 10 T. Below 10 K, however, unusual low-energy excitations of in-gap states are observed, which depend strongly on the field H. The specific heat C detects these excitations in the form of an enhanced Sommerfeld coefficient $γ= C(T)/T$ : In zero field, $γ$ increases steeply below 5 K, reaching a maximum at 0.1 K, and then saturates at $γ= 0.6$ J/molK$^2$. This maximum is shifted to higher temperatures with increasing field suggesting a residual density of states at the Fermi level developing a spin gap $ΔE_g2$. A simple model, based on two narrow quasiparticle bands located at the Fermi level - which cross the Fermi level in zero field at 0.022 states/meV f.u. - can account qualitatively as well as quantitatively for the measured observables. In particular, it is demonstrated that fitting our data of both specific heat and NMR to the model, incorporating a Ce magnetic moment of $μ= ΔE_g1/μ_{0H} \simeq 1 μ_B$, leads to the prediction of the field dependence of the gap. Our measurements rule out the presence of a quantum critical point as the origin for the enhanced $γ$ in CeRu$_4$Sn$_6$ and suggest that this arises rather from correlated, residual in-gap states at the Fermi level. This work provides a fundamental route for future investigations into the phenomenon of narrow-gap formation in the strongly correlated class of system

NMR and μSR study of spin correlations in SrZnVO(PO4)2 a S=1/2 frustrated magnet on a square lattice

31P nuclear and muon spin-lattice relaxation rate measurements in SrZnVO(PO4)2, a S=1/2 frustrated magnet on a square lattice, are presented. The temperature (T) dependence of the in-plane correlation length ξ(T) is derived and it is shown that the overall behaviour is analogous to the one found for non-frustrated systems but with a reduced spin stiffness. The temperature dependence of ξ(T) in SrZnVO(PO4)2 is compared to the one of other frustrated magnets on a square lattice with competing nearest neighbour (J1) and next-nearest neighbour (J2) exchange couplings and it is shown that ξ(T) progressively decreases as the ratio J2/J1 approaches the critical value leading to the suppression of long-range magnetic order. In spite of the differences in the functional form of ξ(T) found in different vanadates, it is pointed out that the characteristic energy scale describing spin correlations in all those compounds appears to scale as |2J2 + J1|.

Single Crystal 31P NMR Studies of the Frustrated Square Lattice Compound Pb2(VO)(PO4)2

The static and dynamic properties of V^{4+} spins (S = 1/2) in the frustrated square lattice compound Pb2(VO)(PO4)2 were investigated by means of magnetic susceptibility chi and 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) shift (K) and 31P nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 measurements on a single crystal. This compound exhibits long-range antiferromagnetic order below TN \simeq 3.65 K. NMR spectra above TN show two distinct lines corresponding to two inequivalent P sites present in the crystal structure. The observed asymmetry in hyperfine coupling constant for the in-plane (P1) P site directly points towards a distortion in the square lattice at the microscopic level, consistent with the monoclinic crystal structure. The nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor exchange couplings were estimated to be J1/kB = (-5.4 \pm 0.5) K (ferromagnetic) and J2/kB = (9.3 \pm 0.6) K (antiferromagnetic), respectively. 1/(T1 T chi) is almost T-independent at high temperatures due to random fluctuation of spin moments. Below 20 K, the compound shows an enhancement of 1/(T1 T chi) which arises from a growth of antiferromagnetic spin correlations above TN. Below TN and for the field applied along the c-axis, the NMR spectrum for the P1 site splits into two satellites and the spacing between them increases monotonically with decreasing T which is a direct evidence of a columnar antiferromagnetic ordering with spins lying in the ab-plane. This type of magnetic ordering is consistent with expectation from the J2/J1 \simeq -1.72 ratio. The critical exponent beta = 0.25 \pm 0.02 estimated from the temperature dependence of sublattice magnetization as measured by 31P NMR at 11.13 MHz is close to the value (0.231) predicted for the two-dimensional XY model.
