Magnetoconductivity of Dirac semimetals and chiral magnetic effect from Keldysh technique

Negative magnetoresistance in Dirac semimetals is typically considered as a manifestation of chiral magnetic effect (CME). The relation between these two phenomena has the status of a hypothesis and is based on sequence of assumptions. We rely on the Keldysh technique of non-equilibrium theory. It allows us to investigate the accumulation of axial charge -- the process that involves both chiral anomaly and relaxation followed by the energy dissipation. We consider the case of strong magnetic field and calculate directly both axial charge density and electric conductivity taking into account both scattering on impurities and interaction with phonons. We obtain the same dependence of axial charge density on electric and magnetic fields, and the same dependence of electric current on axial charge density as the standard heuristic CME calculation. This confirms (in the limit of strong magnetic fields) the hypothesis that the origin of magnetoconductivity in Dirac semimetals is the CME.

Non-renormalization of the fractional quantum Hall conductivity by interactions

We investigate the theory of the fractional quantum Hall effect (QHE) proposed a long time ago by Lopez and Fradkin \cite{Fradkin1991chern} to describe the principal Jain series. The magnetic fluxes of the statistical gauge field attached to electrons remain at rest in the reference frame moving together with the electron liquid. In the laboratory reference frame the electric field of the statistical gauge field forms and screens the external electric field. The fractional QHE conductivity appears as a consequence of this screening already on the mean field theory level. We consider a relativistic extension of the model, and propose an alternative description of the fractional QHE based on macroscopic motion of the electron liquid within the Zubarev statistical operator approach. It is this macroscopic motion of electrons which in this pattern gives rise to the fractional QHE. Within this approach we propose the proof to all orders of perturbation theory that the interaction corrections cannot change the above mentioned mean field theory result for the QHE conductivity.

Discrete Wigner-Weyl calculus for the finite lattice

We develop the approach of Felix Buot to construction of Wigner-Weyl calculus for the lattice models. We apply this approach to the tight-binding models with finite number of lattice cells. For simplicity we restrict ourselves to the case of rectangular lattice. We start from the original Buot definition of the symbol of operator. This definition is corrected in order to maintain self-consistency of the algebraic constructions. It appears, however, that the Buot symbol for simple operators does not have a regular limit when the lattice size tends to infinity. Therefore, using a more dense auxiliary lattice we modify the Buot symbol of operator in order to build our new discrete Weyl symbol. The latter obeys several useful identities inherited from the continuum theory. Besides, the limit of infinitely large lattice becomes regular. We formulate Keldysh technique for the lattice models using the proposed Weyl symbols of operators. Within this technique the simple expression for the electric conductivity of a two dimensional non - equilibrium and non - homogeneous system is derived. This expression smoothly approaches the topological one in the limit of thermal equilibrium at small temperature and large system area.

Fundamental scalar field with zero dimension from anomaly cancelations

In this article a novel mechanism for dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking and the ensuing appearance of fermion mass terms in the action is proposed. The action contains massless fermions of the SM coupled to gravity through a new type of non-minimal coupling to the vielbein field. The corresponding coupling constants in our approach become zero-dimension scalar fields. Such scalar fields provide the cancellation of the Weyl anomaly \cite{Boyle:2021jaz}.

Influence of interactions on Integer Quantum Hall Effect

Conductivity of Integer Quantum Hall Effect (IQHE) may be expressed as the topological invariant composed of the two - point Green function. Such a topological invariant is known both for the case of homogeneous systems with intrinsic Anomalous Quantum Hall Effect (AQHE) and for the case of IQHE in the inhomogeneous systems. In the latter case we may speak, for example, of the AQHE in the presence of elastic deformations and of the IQHE in presence of magnetic field. The topological invariant for the general case of inhomogeneous systems is expressed through the Wigner transformed Green functions and contains Moyal product. When it is reduced to the expression for the IQHE in the homogeneous systems the Moyal product is reduced to the ordinary one while the Wigner transformed Green function (defined in phase space) is reduced to the Green function in momentum space. Originally the mentioned above topological representation has been derived for the non - interacting systems. We demonstrate that in a wide range of different cases in the presence of interactions the Hall conductivity is given by the same expression, in which the noninteracting two - point Green function is substituted by the complete two - point Green function with the interactions taken into account. Several types of interactions are considered including the contact four - fermion interactions, Yukawa and Coulomb interactions. We present the complete proof of this statement up to the two loops, and argue that the similar result remains to all orders of perturbation theory. It is based on the incorporation of Wigner - Weyl calculus to the perturbation theory. We, therefore, formulate Feynmann rules of diagram technique in terms of the Wigner transformed propagators.

Multilayer Haldane model

We propose the model of layered materials, in which each layer is described by the conventional Haldane model, while the inter - layer hopping parameter corresponds to the ABC stacking. We calculate the topological invariant $N_3$ for the resulting model, which is responsible for the conductivity of intrinsic quantum Hall effect. It has been shown that in a certain range of the values of interlayer hopping parameter, the value of $N_3$ is equal to the number of layers multiplied by the topological invariant of each layer. At the same time this value may be calculated using the low energy effective theory.

Riemann-Cartan gravity with dynamical signature

Model of Riemann-Cartan gravity with varying signature of metric is considered. The basic dynamical variables of the formalism are vierbein, spin connection, and an internal metric in the tangent space. The corresponding action contains new terms, which depend on these fields. In general case the signature of the metric is determined dynamically. The Minkowski signature is preferred dynamically because the configurations with the other signatures are dynamically suppressed. We also discuss briefly the motion of particles in the background of the modified black hole configuration, in which inside the horizon the signature is that of Euclidean space - time.

Topological quantization of Fractional Quantum Hall conductivity

We consider the quantum Hall effect (QHE) in a system of interacting electrons. Our formalism is valid for systems in the presence of an external magnetic field, as well as for systems with a nontrivial band topology. That is, the expressions for the conductivity derived are valid for both the ordinary QHE and for the intrinsic anomalous QHE. The expression for the conductivity applies to external fields that may vary in an arbitrary way, and takes into account disorder. It is assumed that the ground state of the system is degenerate. We represent the QHE conductivity as $\frac{e^2}{h} \times \frac{\cal N}{K}$, where $K$ is the degeneracy of the ground state, while $\cal N$ is the topological invariant composed of the Wigner - transformed multi - leg Green functions. $\cal N$ takes discrete values, which gives rise to quantization of the fractional QHE conductivity.

Anomalous fractional quantum Hall effect and multi-valued Hamiltonians

We discuss anomalous fractional quantum Hall effect that exists without external magnetic field. We propose that excitations in such systems may be described effectively by non-interacting particles with the Hamiltonians defined on the Brillouin zone with a branch cut. Hall conductivity of such a system is expressed through the one-particle Green function. We demonstrate that for the Hamiltonians of the proposed type this expression takes fractional values times Klitzing constant. Possible relation of the proposed construction with degeneracy of ground state is discussed as well.

Classification of emergent Weyl spinors in multi-fermion systems

In the fermionic systems with topologically stable Fermi points the emergent two - component Weyl fermions appear. We propose the topological classification of these fermions based on the two invariants composed of the two - component Green function. We define these invariants using Wigner - Weyl formalism also in case of essentially non - homogeneous systems. In the case when values of these invariants are minimal ($\pm 1$) we deal with emergent relativistic symmetry. The emergent gravity appears, and our classification of Weyl fermions gives rise to the classification of vierbein. Transformations between emergent relativistic Weyl fermions of different types correspond to parity conjugation, time reversal, and charge conjugation.

Equilibrium Chiral Magnetic Effect: spatial inhomogeneity, finite temperature, interactions

We discuss equilibrium relativistic fermionic systems in lattice regularization, and extend the consideration of chiral magnetic effect to systems with spatial inhomogeneity and finite temperature. Besides, we take into account interactions due to exchange by gauge bosons. We find that the equilibrium chiral magnetic conductivity remains equal to zero.

Wigner-Weyl calculus in Keldysh technique

We discuss the non-equilibrium dynamics of condensed matter/quantum field systems in the framework of Keldysh technique. In order to deal with the inhomogeneous systems we use the Wigner-Weyl formalism. Unification of the mentioned two approaches is demonstrated on the example of Hall conductivity. We express Hall conductivity through the Wigner transformed two-point Green's functions. We demonstrate how this expression is reduced to the topological number in thermal equilibrium at zero temperature. At the same time both at finite temperature and out of equilibrium the topological invariance is lost. Moreover, Hall conductivity becomes sensitive to interaction corrections.

Emergent gravity in superplastic crystals and cosmological constant problem

We discuss emergent gravity in the superplastic crystals. We restrict ourselves by the consideration of the gapped (massive) fermions coupled to gravity. In this approach the stress - energy tensor may be defined in such a way, that being integrated over the whole volume it is a topological invariant provided that the background metric weakly depends on coordinates. In equilibrium its value is not changed if the system is modified smoothly. The cosmological constant in this pattern is a topological invariant as well.

Feynman Rules in terms of the Wigner transformed Green functions

In the models defined on the inhomogeneous background the propagators depend on the two space - time momenta rather than on one momentum as in the homogeneous systems. Therefore, the conventional Feynman diagrams contain extra integrations over momenta, which complicate calculations. We propose to express all amplitudes through the Wigner transformed propagators. This approach allows us to reduce the number of integrations. As a price for this the ordinary products of functions are replaced by the Moyal products. The corresponding rules of the diagram technique are formulated using an example of the model with the fermions interacting via an exchange by scalar bosons. The extension of these rules to the other models is straightforward. This approach may simplify calculations in certain particular cases. The most evident one is the calculation of various non - dissipative currents.

High energy scattering in Einstein-Cartan gravity

We consider Riemann-Cartan gravity with minimal Palatini action, which is classically equivalent to Einstein gravity. Following the ideas of L.Lipatov \cite{LipGrav} we propose the effective action for this theory aimed at the description of the high-energy scattering of gravitating particles in the multi - Regge kinematics. For that purpose we add to the Palatini action the new terms responsible for the interaction of gravitational quanta with certain collective excitations that replace exchange by multiple gravitational excitations. We propose the heuristic explanation of its particular form based on an analogy to the reggeon field theory of QCD. We argue that Regge kinematics assumes the appearance of an effective two - dimensional model describing the high - energy scattering similar to that of QCD. Such a model may be formulated in a way leading to our final effective theory, which contains interaction between the ordinary quanta of spin connection and vielbein with their effective counterparts that pretend to the role of the gravitational reggeons.

RF-coil with variable resonant frequency for multiheteronuclear ultra-high field MRI

Here we propose double-coil setup to allow high signal-to-noise ratio broad-range heteronuclear magnetic resonance imaging experiments: two independent coils, one of them tuned to $^{1}$H frequency to perform anatomical $^{1}$H imaging, and another one, metamaterial-inspired coil, tuned to the X-nucleus frequency. In this work our goal was to design a broad-range X-nuclei coil to cover $^{2}$H, $^{11}$B, $^{13}$C, $^{23}$Na, $^{7}$Li and $^{31}$P nuclear magnetic resonance frequencies, and to combine it with $^{1}$H coil in one setup. The system was designed for 11.7 T scanner, i.e., with 76-203 MHz frequency tuning range for the X-nuclei and tuned to 500 MHz for the proton coil. X-nuclei coil operates via excitation of the fundamental eigenmode of an array of parallel non-magnetic wires. The excitation of the array is provided via non-resonant feeding loop inductively coupled to the resonator. In order to tune the X-coil over such a wide range, both structural capacitance and inductance of the coil were made variable; narrow range tuning of the $^{1}$H coil is achieved via conventional tuning-matching circuit. Here, the design principle and setup tunability were investigated in simulations and experimentally.

A Note on Bloch theorem

Bloch theorem in ordinary quantum mechanics means the absence of the total electric current in equilibrium. In the present paper we analyze the possibility that this theorem remains valid within quantum field theory relevant for the description of both high energy physics and condensed matter physics phenomena. First of all, we prove that the total electric current in equilibrium is the topological invariant for the gapped fermions that are subject to periodical boundary conditions, i.e. it is robust to the smooth modification of such systems. This property remains valid when the inter - fermion interactions due to the exchange by bosonic excitations are taken into account perturbatively. We give the proof of this statement to all orders in perturbation theory. Thus we prove the weak version of the Bloch theorem, and conclude that the total current remains zero in any system, which is obtained by smooth modification of the one with the gapped charged fermions, periodical boundary conditions, and vanishing total electric current. We analyse several examples, in which the fermions are gapless. In some of them the total electric current vanishes. At the same time we propose the counterexamples of the equilibrium gapless systems, in which the total electric current is nonzero.

Landau Levels in graphene in the presence of emergent gravity

We consider graphene in the presence of external magnetic field and elastic deformations that cause emergent magnetic field. The total magnetic field results in the appearance of Landau levels in the spectrum of quasiparticles. In addition, the quasiparticles in graphene experience the emergent gravity. We consider the particular choice of elastic deformation, which gives constant emergent magnetic field and vanishing torsion. Emergent gravity may be considered as perturbation. We demonstrate that the corresponding first order approximation affects the energies of the Landau levels only through the constant renormalization of Fermi velocity. The degeneracy of each Landau level receives correction, which depends essentially on the geometry of the sample. There is the limiting case of the considered elastic deformation, that corresponds to the uniformly stretched graphene. In this case in the presence of the external magnetic field the degeneracies of the Landau levels remain unchanged.

Schwinger pair creation in Dirac semimetals in the presence of external magnetic and electric fields

We discuss the Schwinger pair creation process for the system of massless Dirac fermions in the presence of constant external magnetic and electric fields. The pair production rate remains finite unlike the vacuum decay rate. In the recently discovered Dirac semimetals, where the massless Dirac fermions emerge, this pair production may be observed experimentally through the transport properties. We estimate its contribution to the ordinary conductivity of the semimetals.

Emergent geometry experienced by fermions in graphene in the presence of dislocations

In graphene in the presence of strain the elasticity theory metric naturally appears. However, this is not the one experienced by fermionic quasiparticles. Fermions propagate in curved space, whose metric is defined by expansion of the effective Hamiltonian near the topologically protected Fermi point. We discuss relation between both types of metric for different parametrizations of graphene surface. Next, we extend our consideration to the case, when the dislocations are present. We consider the situation, when the deformation is described by elasticity theory and calculate both torsion and emergent magnetic field carried by the dislocation. The dislocation carries singular torsion in addition to the quantized flux of emergent magnetic field. Both may be observed in the scattering of quasiparticles on the dislocation. Emergent magnetic field flux manifests itself in the Aharonov - Bohm effect while the torsion singularity results in Stodolsky effect.

Emergent gravity and chiral anomaly in Dirac semimetals in the presence of dislocations

We consider the recently discovered Dirac semimetals with two Dirac points $\pm{\bf K}$. In the presence of elastic deformations each fermion propagates in a curved space, whose metric is defined by the expansion of the effective Hamiltonian near the Dirac point. Besides, there is the emergent electromagnetic field that is defined by the shift of the Dirac point. We consider the case, when the deformations are caused by the dislocations. The dislocation carries singular torsion and the quantized flux of emergent magnetic field. Both torsion singularity and emergent magnetic flux may be observed in the scattering of quasiparticles on the dislocation due to Stodolsky and Aharonov - Bohm effects. We discuss quantum anomalies in the quasiparticle currents in the presence of emergent gauge and gravitational fields and the external electromagnetic field. In particular, it is demonstrated, that in the presence of external electric field the quasiparticles/holes are pumped from vacuum along the dislocation. The appeared chiral imbalance along the dislocation drives the analogue of chiral magnetic effect, that is the appearance of electric current along the dislocation.

Emergent gravity in the cubic tight-binding model of Weyl semimetal in the presence of elastic deformations

We consider the tight-binding model with cubic symmetry that may be relevant for the description of a certain class of Weyl semimetals. We take into account elastic deformations of the semimetal through the modification of hopping parameters. This modification results in the appearance of emergent gauge field and the coordinate dependent anisotropic Fermi velocity. The latter may be interpreted as emergent gravitational field.

Scalar excitation with Leggett frequency in $^3$ He-B and the $125$ GeV Higgs particle in top quark condensation models as Pseudo - Goldstone bosons

We consider the scenario, in which the light Higgs scalar boson appears as the Pseudo - Goldstone boson. We discuss examples both in condensed matter and in relativistic field theory. In $^3$He-B the symmetry breaking gives rise to 4 Nambu-Goldstone modes and 14 Higgs modes. At lower energy one of the four NG modes becomes the Higgs boson with small mass. This is the mode measured in experiments with the longitudinal NMR, and the Higgs mass corresponds to the Leggett frequency $M_{\rm H}=\hbar Ω_L$. The formation of the Higgs mass is the result of the violation of the hidden spin-orbit symmetry at low energy. In this scenario the symmetry breaking energy scale $Δ$ (the gap in the fermionic spectrum) and the Higgs mass scale $M_{\rm H}$ are highly separated: $M_{\rm H}\ll Δ$. On the particle physics side we consider the model inspired by the models of \cite{dobrescu,Yamawaki}. At high energies the $SU(3)$ symmetry is assumed that relates the left - handed top and bottom quarks to the additional fermion $χ_L$. This symmetry is softly broken at low energies. As a result the only CP - even Goldstone boson acquires a mass and may be considered as the candidate for the role of the $125$ GeV scalar boson. We consider the condensation pattern different from the one typical for the top - seesaw models, where the condensate $< \bar{t}_Lχ_R >$ is off - diagonal. In our case the condensates are mostly diagonal. Unlike \cite{dobrescu,Yamawaki} the explicit mass terms are absent and the soft breaking of $SU(3)$ symmetry is given solely by the four - fermion terms. This reveals the complete analogy with $^3$He, where there is no explicit mass term and the spin - orbit interaction has the form of the four - fermion interaction.

Schwinger - Dyson equation and NJL approximation in massive gauge theory with fermions

We consider massive $SU(N)$ gauge theory with fermions. Gauge bosons become massive due to the interaction with the scalar field, whose vacuum average provides the spontaneous breakdown of gauge symmetry. We investigate Dyson - Schwinger equation for the fermion propagator written in ladder approximation and in Landau gauge. Our analysis demonstrates that the chiral symmetry breaking in the considered theory is the strong coupling phenomenon. There are the indications that there appears the second order phase transition between chirally broken and symmetric phases of the theory at the value of coupling constant $α_c = (1+γ)\times \fracπ{3}\times \frac{1}{2 C_2(F)}$, where $0<γ<1$, and $γ$ depends on the scale, at which the fluctuations of the scalar field destroy the gauge boson mass. In the broken phase near the critical value of $α$ the Dyson - Schwinger equation is approximated well by the gap equation of the effective Nambu - Joina - Lasinio model with the value of cutoff around gauge boson mass $M$ and the effective four - fermion coupling constant $\frac{4 πα}{M^2}\times \frac{2C_2(F)}{N}$. The dynamical fermion mass $m$ may be essentially smaller than $M$.

Dynamical torsion as the microscopic origin of the neutrino seesaw

It is assumed, that there are two scales in quantum gravity. Metric fluctuates at the scales of the order of the Plank mass. The second scale $M_T$ is related to the fluctuations of torsion. We suppose, that it may be as low as $M_T \sim 1$ TeV. Due to the non - minimal coupling to torsion the attractive interaction between the fermions appears. The non - minimal coupling admits the appearance of different coupling constants for different fermions. This opens the possibility that the interaction with torsion gives the Majorana masses for the right - handed neutrinos (that are assumed to be of the order of $M_T$). We suppose, that the Dirac masses for the neutrino are all close to the mass of electron. This gives the light neutrino masses $\le 0.25$ eV. In addition, the model predicts the appearance of Majorons that may contribute to the dark matter as well as to the invisible decay of the $125$ GeV Higgs boson.

Emergent Weyl fermions and the origin of $i=\sqrt{-1}$ in quantum mechanics

Conventional quantum mechanics is described in terms of complex numbers. However, all physical quantities are real. This indicates, that the appearance of complex numbers in quantum mechanics may be the emergent phenomenon, i.e. complex numbers appear in the low energy description of the underlined high energy theory. We suggest a possible explanation of how this may occur. Namely, we consider the system of multi - component Majorana fermions. There is a natural description of this system in terms of real numbers only. In the vicinity of the topologically protected Fermi point this system is described by the effective low energy theory with Weyl fermions. These Weyl fermions interact with the emergent gauge field and the emergent gravitational field.

Emergent Weyl spinors in multi-fermion systems

In Ref. \cite{Horava2005} Hořava suggested, that the multi - fermion many-body system with topologically stable Fermi surfaces may effectively be described (in a vicinity of the Fermi surface) by the theory with coarse-grained fermions. The number of the components of these coarse-grained fermions is reduced compared to the original system. Here we consider the $3+1$ D system and concentrate on the particular case when the Fermi surface has co-dimension $p=3$, i.e. it represents the Fermi point in momentum space. First we demonstrate explicitly that in agreement with Hořava conjecture, in the vicinity of the Fermi point the original system is reduced to the model with two - component Weyl spinors. Next, we generalize the construction of Hořava to the situation, when the original $3+1$ D theory contains multi - component Majorana spinors. In this case the system is also reduced to the model of the two - component Weyl fermions in the vicinity of the topologically stable Fermi point. Those fermions experience the emergent gauge field and the gravitational field given by the emergent veirbein. Both these fields (the emergent gauge field and the emergent gravitational field) originate from certain collective excitations of the original system. We speculate, that the given construction may be relevant for the high energy physics in the paradigm, in which the Lorentz symmetry as well as the gravitational and gauge fields are the emergent phenomena, i.e. they appear dynamically in the low energy approximation of the underlined high energy theory.

Mirror as polaron with internal degrees of freedom

We consider the model suggested by Wang and Unruh \cite{WangUnruh2013} for the $1+1$ D mirror moving in the quantum vacuum. We consider the relation of this model to the problem of polaron -- the electron moving in the vacuum of the quantum field of phonons. We introduce the field - theoretical model of such a mirror. It contains the multi - component spinor field interacting with the scalar field. We discuss the source of the logarithmic divergence in the mirror mass and its relation to the problem of the divergencies in vacuum energy.

Modified model of top quark condensation

We develop the modification of the top - quark condensation scenario, in which the Higgs boson is composed of all Standard Model fermions. Within this scenario we suggest the phenomenological model with non - local four - fermion interactions in which at the distances of the order of $\sim 1/100$ GeV the theory is represented in terms of only one Majorana spinor that carries the $U(12)$ index and, in addition, belongs to the spinor representation of $O(4)$. The Standard Model fermions are the components of this spinor. The symmetry $U(12)\otimes O(4)$ is responsible for the one - loop relation between the Higgs boson mass and the top quark mass $M_H^2 = m_t^2/2$. At the distances $\gg 1/100$ GeV the mentioned symmetry is broken, and the interaction term dominates that provides the nonzero mass of the top quark. Our phenomenological model should be considered in zeta or dimensional regularization. In conventional cutoff regularization this is equivalent to the existence of the additional counter - terms that cancel all quadratic divergences. As a result the $1/N$ expansion may be applied.

Strong dynamics behind the formation of the $125$ GeV Higgs boson

We consider the scenario, in which the new strong dynamics is responsible for the formation of the $125$ GeV Higgs boson. The Higgs boson appears as composed of all known quarks and leptons of the Standard Model. The description of the mentioned strong dynamics is given using the $ζ$ - regularization. It allows to construct the effective theory without ultraviolet divergences, in which the $1/N_c$ expansion works naturally. It is shown, that in the leading order of the $1/N_c$ expansion the mass of the composite $h$ - boson is given by $M_h = m_t/\sqrt{2} \approx 125$ GeV, where $m_t$ is the top - quark mass.

Emergent Horava gravity in graphene

First of all, we reconsider the tight - binding model of monolayer graphene, in which the variations of the hopping parameters are allowed. We demonstrate that the emergent 2D Weitzenbock geometry as well as the emergent U(1) gauge field appear. The emergent gauge field is equal to the linear combination of the components of the zweibein. Therefore, we actually deal with the gauge fixed version of the emergent 2+1 D teleparallel gravity. In particular, we work out the case, when the variations of the hopping parameters are due to the elastic deformations, and relate the elastic deformations with the emergent zweibein. Next, we investigate the tight - binding model with the varying intralayer hopping parameters for the multilayer graphene with the ABC stacking. In this case the emergent 2D Weitzenbock geometry and the emergent U(1) gauge field appear as well, the emergent low energy effective field theory has the anisotropic scaling.

Euler - Heisenberg effective action and magnetoelectric effect in multilayer graphene

The low energy effective field model for the multilayer graphene (at ABC stacking) is considered. We calculate the effective action in the presence of constant external magnetic field $B$ (normal to the graphene sheet). We also calculate the first two corrections to this effective action caused by the in-plane electric field $E$ at $E/B \ll 1$ and discuss the magnetoelectric effect. In addition, we calculate the imaginary part of the effective action in the presence of constant electric field $E$ and the lowest order correction to it due to the magnetic field ($B/E \ll 1$).

Gauge theory of Lorentz group as a source of the dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking

We consider the gauge theory of Lorentz group coupled in a nonminimal way to fermions. We suggest the hypothesis that the given theory may exist in the phase with broken chiral symmetry and without confinement. The lattice discretization of the model is described. This unusual strongly coupled theory may appear to be the source of the dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking. Namely, in this theory all existing fermions interact with the SO(3,1) gauge field. In the absence of the other interactions the chiral condensate may appear and all fermionic excitations may acquire equal masses. Small corrections to the gap equations due to the other interactions may cause the appearance of the observed hierarchy of masses.

Higgs bosons in particle physics and in condensed matter

Higgs bosons - the amplitude modes - have been experimentally investigated in condensed matter for many years. An example is superfluid $^3$He-B, where the broken symmetry leads to 4 Goldstone modes and at least 14 Higgs modes, which are characterized by angular momentum quantum number $J$ and parity. Based on the relation $E_{J+}^2+E_{J-}^2=4Δ^2$ for the energy spectrum of these modes, Yoichiro Nambu proposed the general sum rule, which relates masses of Higgs bosons and masses of fermions. If this rule is applicable to Standard Model, one may expect that the observed Higgs boson with mass $M_{{\rm H}1}=125$ GeV has a Nambu partner -- the second Higgs boson with mass $M_{{\rm H}2}=325$ GeV. Together they satisfy the Nambu relation $M_{{\rm H}1}^2 + M_{{\rm H}2}^2 = 4 M_{\rm top}^2$, where $M_{\rm top}$ is the top quark mass. Also the properties of the Higgs modes in superfluid $^3$He-A, where the symmetry breaking is similar to that of the Standard Model, suggest the possible existence of two electrically charged Higgs particles with masses $M_{{\rm H}+}=M_{{\rm H}-}\sim 245$ GeV, which together obey the Nambu rule $M_{{\rm H}+}^2 + M_{{\rm H}-}^2 = 4 M_{\rm top}^2$. A certain excess of events at 325 GeV and at 245 GeV has been reported in 2011, though not confirmed in 2012 experiments. Besides, we consider the particular relativistic model of top - quark condensation that suggests the possibility that two twice degenerated Higgs bosons contribute to the Nambu sum rule. This gives the mass around 210 GeV for the Nambu partner of the 125 GeV Higgs boson. We also discuss the other possible lessons from the condensed matter to Standard Model, such as hidden symmetry, where light Higgs emerges as quasi Nambu-Goldstone mode, and the role of broken time reversal symmetry.

Nambu sum rule in the NJL models: from superfluidity to top quark condensation

It may appear that the recently found resonance at 125 GeV is not the only Higgs boson. We point out the possibility that the Higgs bosons appear in models of top-quark condensation, where the masses of the bosonic excitations are related to the top quark mass by the sum rule similar to the Nambu sum rule of the NJL models \cite{Nambu}. This rule was originally considered by Nambu for superfluid $^3$He-B and for the BCS model of superconductivity. It relates the two masses of bosonic excitations existing in each channel of Cooper pairing to the fermion mass. An example of the Nambu partners is provided by the amplitude and the phase modes in the BCS model describing Cooper pairing in the s-wave channel. This sum rule suggests the existence of the Nambu partners for the 125 GeV Higgs boson. Their masses can be predicted by the Nambu sum rule under certain circumstances. For example, if there are only two states in the given channel, the mass of the Nambu partner is $\sim$ 325 GeV. They together satisfy the Nambu sum rule $M_1^2 + M_2^2 = 4 M_t^2$, where $M_t \sim $174 GeV is the mass of the top quark. If there are two doubly degenerated states, then the second mass is $\sim$ 210 GeV. In this case the Nambu sum rule is $2 M_1^2 + 2 M_2^2 = 4 M_t^2$. In addition, the properties of the Higgs modes in superfluid $^3$He-A, where the symmetry breaking is similar to that of the Standard Model of particle physics, suggest the existence of two electrically charged Higgs particles with masses around 245 GeV, which together also obey the Nambu sum rule $M_+^2 + M_-^2 = 4 M_t^2$.

On symmetry and topological origin of Weyl particles

We suggest that the Weil spinors originate from the multi - component fermion fields. Those fields belong to the unusual theory that, presumably, exists at extremely high energies. In this theory there is no Lorentz symmetry. Moreover, complex numbers are not used in the description of its dynamics. Namely, the one - particle wave functions are real - valued, the functional integral that describes the second - quantised theory does not contain the imaginary unit as well. In the low energy effective theory the two - component Weil spinors appear. Their appearance is related to the Atiyah-Bott-Shapiro construction and to the expansion of the real matrix near the topologically protected nodes in three dimensional momentum space. The complex numbers entering ordinary quantum mechanics emerge together with the Weil fermions. In this pattern gauge fields and gravitational fields appear as certain collective excitations (of the original theory) experienced by the low - energy Weil fermions.

Polarons as stable solitary wave solutions to the Dirac-Coulomb system

We consider solitary wave solutions to the Dirac--Coulomb system both from physical and mathematical points of view. Fermions interacting with gravity in the Newtonian limit are described by the model of Dirac fermions with the Coulomb attraction. This model also appears in certain condensed matter systems with emergent Dirac fermions interacting via optical phonons. In this model, the classical soliton solutions of equations of motion describe the physical objects that may be called polarons, in analogy to the solutions of the Choquard equation. We develop analytical methods for the Dirac--Coulomb system, showing that the no-node gap solitons for sufficiently small values of charge are linearly (spectrally) stable.

The Nambu sum rule and the relation between the masses of composite Higgs bosons

We review the known results on the bosonic spectrum in various NJL models both in the condensed matter physics and in relativistic quantum field theory including $^3$He-B, $^3$He-A, the thin films of superfluid He-3, and QCD (Hadronic phase and the Color Flavor Locking phase). Next, we calculate bosonic spectrum in the relativistic model of top quark condensation suggested in \cite{Miransky}. In all considered cases the sum rule appears that relates the masses (energy gaps) $M_{boson}$ of the bosonic excitations in each channel with the mass (energy gap) of the condensed fermion $M_f$ as $\sum M_{boson}^2 = 4 M_f^2$. Previously this relation was established by Nambu in \cite{Nambu} for $^3$He-B and for the s - wave superconductor. We generalize this relation to the wider class of models and call it the Nambu sum rule. We discuss the possibility to apply this sum rule to various models of top quark condensation. In some cases this rule allows to calculate the masses of extra Higgs bosons that are the Nambu partners of the 125 GeV Higgs.

Unruh effect in vacua with anisotropic scaling: Applications to multilayer graphene

We extend the calculation of the Unruh effect to the universality classes of quantum vacua obeying topologically protected invariance under anisotropic scaling ${\bf r} \rightarrow b {\bf r}$, $t \rightarrow b^z t$. Two situations are considered. The first one is related to the accelerated detector which detects the electron - hole pairs. The second one is related to the system in external electric field, when the electron - hole pairs are created due to the Schwinger process. As distinct from the Unruh effect in relativistic systems (where $z=1$) the calculated radiation is not thermal, but has properties of systems in the vicinity of quantum criticality. The vacuum obeying anisotropic scaling can be realized, in particular, in multilayer graphene with the rhombohedral stacking. Opportunities of the experimental realization of Unruh effect in this situation are discussed.

Generalized unparticles, zeros of the Green function, and momentum space topology of the lattice model with overlap fermions

The definition of topological invariants $\tilde{\cal N}_4, \tilde{\cal N}_5$ suggested in \cite{VZ2012} is extended to the case, when there are zeros and poles of the Green function in momentum space. It is shown how to extend the index theorem suggested in \cite{VZ2012} to this case. The non - analytical exceptional points of the Green function appear in the intermediate vacuum, which exists at the transition line between the massive vacua with different values of topological invariants. Their number is related to the jump $Δ\tilde{\cal N}_4$ across the transition. The given construction is illustrated by momentum space topology of the lattice model with overlap fermions. In the vicinities of the given points the fermion excitations appear that cannot be considered as usual fermion particles. We, therefore, feel this appropriate to call them generalized unparticles. This notion is, in general case different from the Georgi's unparticle. However, in the case of lattice overlap fermions the propagator of such excitations is indeed that of the fermionic unparticle suggested in \cite{fermion_unparticle}.

Green functions in graphene monolayer with Coulomb interactions taken into account

We consider the low energy effective field model of graphene monolayer. Coulomb interactions are taken into account. The model is simulated numerically using the lattice discretization with staggered fermions. The two point fermionic Green functions are calculated. We find that in the insulator phase these Green functions almost do not depend on energy. This indicates that the effective field model (in its insulator phase) does not correspond to the real graphene.

Momentum space topological invariants for the 4D relativistic vacua with mass gap

Topological invariants for the 4D gapped system are discussed with application to the quantum vacua of relativistic quantum fields. Expression $\tilde{\cal N}_3$ for the 4D systems with mass gap defined in \cite{Volovik2010} is considered. It is demonstrated that $\tilde{\cal N}_3$ remains the topological invariant when the interacting theory in deep ultraviolet is effectively massless. We also consider the 5D systems and demonstrate how 4D invariants emerge as a result of the dimensional reduction. In particular, the new 4D invariant $\tilde{\cal N}_5$ is suggested. The index theorem is proved that defines the number of massless fermions $n_F$ in the intermediate vacuum, which exists at the transition line between the massive vacua with different values of $\tilde{\cal N}_5$. Namely, $ 2 n_F$ is equal to the jump $Δ\tilde{\cal N}_5$ across the transition. The jump $Δ\tilde{\cal N}_3$ at the transition determines the number of only those massless fermions, which live near the hypersurface $ω=0$. The considered invariants are calculated for the lattice model with Wilson fermions.

Momentum space topology in the lattice gauge theory

Momentum space topology of relativistic gauge theory is considered. The topological invariants in momentum space are introduced for the case, when there is the mass gap while the fermion Green functions admit zeros. The index theorem is formulated that relates the number of massless particles and generalized unparticles at the phase transitions to the jumps of the topological invariants. The pattern is illustrated by the lattice model with overlap fermions.

Zero temperature lattice Weinberg - Salam model for the values of the cutoff $Λ\sim 1$ TeV

The lattice Weinberg - Salam model at zero temperature is investigated numerically. We consider the model for the following values of the coupling constants: the Weinberg angle $θ_W \sim 30^o$, the fine structure constant $α\sim 1/150$, the Higgs mass $M_H \sim 150$ GeV. We find that the fluctuational region begins at the values of the cutoff $Λ$ above about 0.8 TeV. In this region the average distance between Nambu monopoles is close to their sizes. At $Λ> 1$ TeV the Nambu monopole currents percolate. Within the fluctuational region the considered definitions of the scalar field condensate give values that differ from the expected one $2 M_Z/g_z$. We consider the given results as an indication that the nonperturbative effects may be present in the Weinberg - Salam model at the large values of the cutoff. Our numerical results were obtained on the lattices of sizes up to $16^3\times 32$.

Effective constraint potential in lattice Weinberg - Salam model

We investigate lattice Weinberg - Salam model without fermions for the value of the Weinberg angle $θ_W \sim 30^o$, and bare fine structure constant around $α\sim 1/150$. We consider the value of the scalar self coupling corresponding to bare Higgs mass around 150 GeV. The effective constraint potential for the zero momentum scalar field is used in order to investigate phenomena existing in the vicinity of the phase transition between the physical Higgs phase and the unphysical symmetric phase of the lattice model. This is the region of the phase diagram, where the continuum physics is to be approached. We compare the above mentioned effective potential (calculated in selected gauges) with the effective potential for the value of the scalar field at a fixed space - time point. We also calculate the renormalized fine structure constant using the correlator of Polyakov lines and compare it with the one - loop perturbative estimate.

A model for fermion mass generation in Technicolor theory

We consider the $SU(N_{TC})$ Farhi - Susskind Technicolor model, in which SU(2) doublets of technifermions are right-handed while SU(2) singlets of technifermions are left-handed. We add coupling of fermions and technifermions to $SU(N_{TC})$ fundamental massive scalar fields. Due to this coupling the transitions between both types of fermions occur. Therefore the Standard Model fermions acquire masses.

A superstructure over the Farhi - Susskind Technicolor model

We suggest the model with the gauge group $ ... \otimes SU(6) \otimes SU(5)\otimes SU(4) \otimes SU(3) \otimes SU(2) \otimes U(1)$. This group is the infinite continuation of the gauge group $SU(4) \otimes SU(3) \otimes SU(2) \otimes U(1)$ of Farhi - Susskind model. The constructed model contains fermions from the fundamental representations of any SU(N) subgroups of the gauge group. In the construction of the model we use essentially the requirement that it posseses an additional discrete symmetry $\cal Z$ that is the continuation of the $Z_6$ symmetry of the Standard Model. It has been found that there exists such a choice of the hypercharges of the fermions that the chiral anomaly is absent while the symmetry $\cal Z$ is preserved.

Holst action and Dynamical Electroweak symmetry breaking

We consider Poincare gravity coupled in a nonminimal way to spinors. The gravitational action is considered that contains both Palatini and Holst terms. Due to torsion the effective four - fermion interactions appear that may lead to the left - right asymmetry and the condensation of fermions. When the mass parameter entering the mentioned terms of the gravitational action is at a Tev scale the given construction may provide the dynamical Electroweak symmetry breaking. This is achieved via an arrangement of all Standard Model fermions in the left - handed Dirac spinors while the right - handed spinors are reserved for the technifermions. Due to the gravitational action the technifermions are condensed and, therefore, cause the appearance of gauge boson masses.

How to approach continuum physics in lattice Weinberg - Salam model

We investigate lattice Weinberg - Salam model without fermions numerically for the realistic choice of coupling constants correspondent to the value of the Weinberg angle $θ_W \sim 30^o$, and bare fine structure constant around $α\sim 1/150$. We consider the values of the scalar self coupling corresponding to Higgs mass $M_H \sim 100, 150, 270$ GeV. It has been found that nonperturbative effects become important while approaching continuum physics within the lattice model. When the ultraviolet cutoff $Λ= \fracπ{a}$ (where $a$ is the lattice spacing) is increased and achieves the value around 1 TeV one encounters the fluctuational region (on the phase diagram of the lattice model), where the fluctuations of the scalar field become strong. The classical Nambu monopole can be considered as an embryo of the unphysical symmetric phase within the physical phase. In the fluctuational region quantum Nambu monopoles are dense and, therefore, the use of the perturbation expansion around trivial vacuum in this region is limited. Further increase of the cutoff is accompanied by a transition to the region of the phase diagram, where the scalar field is not condensed (this happens at the value of $Λ$ around 1.4 TeV for the considered lattice sizes). Within this region further increase of the cutoff is possible although we do not observe this in details due to the strong fluctuations of the gauge boson correlator. Both mentioned above regions look unphysical. Therefore we come to the conclusion that the maximal value of the cutoff admitted within lattice Electroweak theory cannot exceed the value of the order of 1 TeV.

The fluctuational region on the phase diagram of lattice Weinberg - Salam model

The lattice Weinberg - Salam model without fermions is investigated numerically for the realistic choice of bare coupling constants correspondent to the value of the Weinberg angle $θ_W \sim 30^o$, and the fine structure constant $α\sim {1/100}$. On the phase diagram there exists the vicinity of the phase transition between the physical Higgs phase and the unphysical symmetric phase, where the fluctuations of the scalar field become strong. The classical Nambu monopole can be considered as an embryo of the unphysical symmetric phase within the physical phase. In the fluctuational region quantum Nambu monopoles are dense and, therefore, the perturbation expansion around trivial vacuum cannot be applied. The maximal value of the cutoff at the given values of coupling constants calculated using the lattices of sizes $8^3\times 16$, $12^3\times 16$, and $16^4$ is $Λ_c \sim 1.4 \pm 0.2$ Tev. As the lattice sizes used are rather small we consider this result as preliminary.

The vicinity of the phase transition in the lattice Weinberg - Salam Model

We investigated the lattice Weinberg - Salam model without fermions for the Higgs mass around $300$ GeV. On the phase diagram there exists the vicinity of the phase transition between the physical Higgs phase and the unphysical symmetric phase, where the fluctuations of the scalar field become strong while Nambu monopoles are dense. According to our numerical results (obtained on the lattices of sizes up to $20^3\times 24$) the maximal value of the ultraviolet cutoff in the model cannot exceed the value around $1.4$ TeV.

Torsion instead of Technicolor

We consider the model, which contains a nonminimal coupling of Dirac spinors to torsion. Due to the action for torsion that breaks parity the left - right asymmetry of the spinors appears. This construction is used in order to provide dynamical Electroweak symmetry breaking. Namely, we arrange all Standard Model fermions in the left - handed spinors. The additional technifermions are arranged in right - handed spinors. Due to interaction with torsion technifermions are condensed and, therefore, cause appearance of gauge boson masses. In order to provide all fermions with masses we consider two possibilities. The first one is related to an additional coupling of a real massive scalar field to considered spinors. The second possibility is to introduce the mass term for the mentioned Dirac spinors composed of the Standard Model fermions and the technifermions.

Upper bound on the cutoff in the Standard Model

The main objective of this presentation is to point out that the Upper bound on the cutoff in lattice Electroweak theory is still unknown. The consideration of the continuum theory is based on the perturbation expansion around trivial vacuum. The internal structure of the lattice Weinberg - Salam model may appear to be more complicated especially in the region of the phase diagram close to the phase transition between the physical Higgs phase and the unphysical symmetric phase of the lattice model, where the continuum physics is to be approached. We represent the results of our numerical investigation of the quenched model at infinite bare scalar self coupling $λ$. These results demonstrate that at $λ= \infty$ the upper bound on the cutoff is around $\fracπ{a} = 1.4$ Tev. The preliminary results for finite $λ$ are also presented. Basing on these results we cannot yet make a definite conclusion on the maximal value of the cutoff admitted in the lattice model, although we have found that the cutoff cannot exceed the value around $1.4 \pm 0.2$ Tev for a certain particular choice of the couplings ($λ= 0.009$, $β= 12$, $θ_W = 30^o$) for the lattices of sizes up to $12^3\times16$. We also observe that the topological defects, which are to be identified with quantum Nambu monopoles, dominate in vacuum in the vicinity of the transition. This indicates that the vacuum of the model is different from the trivial one. In addition we remind the results of the previous numerical investigations of the SU(2) gauge - Higgs model, where the maximal reported value of the cutoff was around 1.5 Tev.

Monopoles in lattice Electroweak theory

There exist several types of monopole - like topological defects in Electroweak theory. We investigate properties of these objects using lattice numerical methods. The intimate connection between them and the dynamics of the theory is established. We find that the density of Nambu monopoles cannot be predicted by the choice of the initial parameters of Electroweak theory and should be considered as the new external parameter of the theory. We also investigate the difference between the versions of Electroweak theory with the gauge groups $SU(2)\otimes U(1)$ and $SU(2)\otimes U(1)/Z_2$. We do not detect any difference at $α\sim {1/128}$. However, such a difference appears in the unphysical region of large coupling constant $α> 0.1$.

Monopoles, topology of the Standard Model, and unification of interactions at Tev scale

It is shown that unification of strong and Electroweak interactions at Tev scale may lead to appearance of topologically stable monopoles with masses of the order of 40 Tev. Those monopoles may play an important role in the early Universe, at finite temperature. They may even be condensed at high enough temperature. The lattice model for investigation of this phenomenon is presented.

$Z_6$ symmetry, electroweak transition, and magnetic monopoles at high temperature

We consider the lattice realization of the Standard Model with an additional $Z_6$ symmetry. Numerical simulations were performed on the asymmetric lattice, which corresponds to the finite temperature theory. Our choice of parameters corresponds to large Higgs masses ($M_H > 90$ Gev). The phase diagram was investigated and has been found to be different from that of the usual lattice realization of the Standard Model. It has been found, that the confinement-deconfinement phase transition lines for the SU(2) and SU(3) fields coincide. The transition line between Higgs and symmetric deconfinement parts of the phase diagram and the confinement-deconfinement transition line meet in a triple point. The transition between Higgs and symmetric parts of the phase diagram corresponds to the finite temperature electroweak transition/crossover. We see for the first time evidence that Nambu monopoles are condensed at $T>T_c$ while at $T<T_c$ their condensate vanishes.

Evidence for the reality of singular configurations in SU(2) gauge theory

We consider the SU(2) lattice gauge model and investigate numerically the continuum limit of the simple center vortices which are singular configurations of the gauge fields. We found that the vortices remain alive in the continuum theory. Also we investigate the Creutz ratio and found that for all $β$ it vanishes for those field configurations which do not contain the simple center vortices inside the considered Wilson loop. It leads us to the conclusion that these singular field configurations play a real role in the continuum theory.

Aharonov-Bohm effect, Center Monopoles and Center Vortices in SU(2) Lattice Gluodynamics

SU(2) gluodynamics is investigated numerically and analytically in the (Indirect) Maximal Center gauge at finite temperature. The center vortices are shown to be condensed in the confinement phase and dilute in the deconfinement phase. A new physical object, center monopole, is constructed. We show that the center monopole condensate is the order parameter of deconfinement phase transition. The linking of the vortex worldsheets and quark trajectories is identified with the Aharonov-Bohm interaction in an effective Abelian Higgs theory. We conclude that the confinement in the Maximal Center gauge can be explained by a new mechanism called "the real superconductor mechanism".

Strings and Aharonov-Bohm Effect in Abelian Higgs Model

We investigate numerically the properties of the Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen strings in 4D abelian Higgs model. The fractal dimension D_f of the vortex strings was found to be large in the Coulomb phase and it is close to 2 in the Higgs phase. We also show that the Wilson loop for non-integer charges is correlated with the linking number of the vortex string world sheets and the test particle world trajectory. We find that this topological (Aharonov-Bohm) interaction gives the main contribution to the Wilson loop quantum average for non-integer test charges in the vicinity of the Coulomb-Higgs phase transition.

Compact QED in Landau Gauge: a lattice gauge fixing case study

We derive different representations of compact QED fixed to Landau gauge by the lattice Faddeev-Popov procedure. Our analysis finds that (A)Nielsen-Olesen vortices arising from the compactness of the gauge-fixing action are {\it quenched\/}, that is, the Faddeev-Popov determinant cancels them out and they do not influence correlation functions such as the photon propagator; (B)Dirac strings are responsible for the nonzero mass pole of the photon propagator. Since in $D=3+1$ the photon mass undergoes a rapid drop to zero at $β_c$, the deconfinement point, this result predicts that Dirac strings must be sufficiently dilute at $β> β_c$. Indeed, numerical simulations reveal that the string density undergoes a rapid drop to near zero at $β\sim β_c$.

The partition function of the $4D$ lattice Abelian Higgs theory is represented as the sum over world sheets of Nielsen--Olesen strings. The creation and annihilation operators of the strings are constructed. The topological long--range interaction of the strings and charged particles is shown to exist; it is proportional to the linking number of the string world sheet and particle world trajectory.
