QCD and strongly coupled gauge theories: challenges and perspectives

We highlight the progress, current status, and open challenges of QCD-driven physics, in theory and in experiment. We discuss how the strong interaction is intimately connected to a broad sweep of physical problems, in settings ranging from astrophysics and cosmology to strongly-coupled, complex systems in particle and condensed-matter physics, as well as to searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. We also discuss how success in describing the strong interaction impacts other fields, and, in turn, how such subjects can impact studies of the strong interaction. In the course of the work we offer a perspective on the many research streams which flow into and out of QCD, as well as a vision for future developments.

Temperature dependence of the axial magnetic effect in two-color quenched QCD

The Axial Magnetic Effect is the generation of an equilibrium dissipationless energy flow of chiral fermions in the direction of the axial (chiral) magnetic field. At finite temperature the dissipationless energy transfer may be realized in the absence of any chemical potentials. We numerically study the temperature behavior of the Axial Magnetic Effect in quenched SU(2) lattice gauge theory. We show that in the confinement (hadron) phase the effect is absent. In the deconfinement transition region the conductivity quickly increases, reaching the asymptotic $T^2$ behavior in a deep deconfinement (plasma) phase. Apart from an overall proportionality factor, our results qualitatively agree with theoretical predictions for the behavior of the energy flow as a function of temperature and strength of the axial magnetic field.

Electromagnetic superconductivity of vacuum induced by strong magnetic field: numerical evidence in lattice gauge theory

Using numerical simulations of quenched SU(2) gauge theory we demonstrate that an external magnetic field leads to spontaneous generation of quark condensates with quantum numbers of electrically charged rho mesons if the strength of the magnetic field exceeds the critical value eBc = 0.927(77) GeV^2 or Bc =(1.56 \pm 0.13) 10^{16} Tesla. The condensation of the charged rho mesons in strong magnetic field is a key feature of the magnetic-field-induced electromagnetic superconductivity of the vacuum.

Interaction of static charges in graphene within Monte-Carlo simulation

The study of the interaction potential between static charges within Monte-Carlo simulation of graphene is carried out. The numerical simulations are performed in the effective lattice field theory with noncompact $3 + 1$-dimensional Abelian lattice gauge fields and $2 + 1$-dimensional staggered lattice fermions. It is shown that for all considered temperatures the interaction can be well described by the Debye screened potential created by two-dimensional electron-hole excitations. At low temperatures Debye mass $m_D$ plays a role of order parameter of the insulator-semimetal phase transition. In the semimetal phase at high temperature graphene reveals the properties of weakly interacting two-dimensional plasma of fermions excitations.

Monte-Carlo study of the electron transport properties of monolayer graphene within the tight-binding model

We study the effect of Coulomb interaction between charge carriers on the properties of graphene monolayer, assuming that the strength of the interaction is controlled by the dielectric permittivity of the substrate on which the graphene layer is placed. To this end we consider the tight-binding model on the hexagonal lattice coupled to the non-compact gauge field. The action of the latter is also discretized on the hexagonal lattice. Equilibrium ensembles of gauge field configurations are obtained using the Hybrid Monte-Carlo algorithm. Our numerical results indicate that at sufficiently strong coupling, that is, at sufficiently small substrate dielectric permittivities e<4, and at sufficiently small temperatures T<10^4 K the symmetry between simple sublattices of hexagonal lattice breaks down spontaneously and the low-frequency conductivity gradually decreases down to 20-30% of its weak-coupling value. On the other hand, in the weak-coupling regime (with e>4) the conductivity practically does not depend on e and is close to the universal value s=1/4.

Monte-Carlo study of the semimetal-insulator phase transition in monolayer graphene with realistic inter-electron interaction potential

We report on the results of the first-principle numerical study of spontaneous breaking of chiral (sublattice) symmetry in suspended monolayer graphene due to electrostatic interaction, which takes into account the screening of Coulomb potential by electrons on $σ$-orbitals. In contrast to the results of previous numerical simulations with unscreened potential, we find that suspended graphene is in the conducting phase with unbroken chiral symmetry. This finding is in agreement with recent experimental results by the Manchester group \cite{Elias et al, 2011}. Further, by artificially increasing the interaction strength we demonstrate that suspended graphene is quite close to the phase transition associated with spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking, which suggests that fluctuations of chirality and nonperturbative effects might still be quite important.

Numerical evidence of the axial magnetic effect

The axial magnetic field, which couples to left- and right-handed fermions with opposite signs, may generate an equilibrium dissipationless energy flow of fermions in the direction of the field even in the presence of interactions. We report on numerical observation of this Axial Magnetic Effect in quenched SU(2) lattice gauge theory. We find that in the deconfinement (plasma) phase the energy flow grows linearly with the increase of the strength of the axial magnetic field. In the confinement (hadron) phase the Axial Magnetic Effect is absent. Our study indirectly confirms the existence of the Chiral Vortical Effect since both these effects have the same physical origin related to the presence of the gravitational anomaly.

Numerical simulation of graphene in external magnetic field

In this paper the results of numerical simulation of monolayer graphene in external magnetic field are presented. The numerical simulation is performed in the effective lattice field theory with noncompact $3 + 1$-dimensional Abelian lattice gauge fields and $2 + 1$-dimensional staggered lattice fermions. The dependences of fermion condensate and graphene conductivity on the dielectric permittivity of substrate for different values of external magnetic field are calculated. It is found that magnetic field shifts insulator-semimetal phase transition to larger values of the dielectric permittivity of substrate. The phase diagram of graphene in external magnetic field is drawn.

The influence of defects on the conductivity of graphene within the effective theory approach

The results of the simulations by Monte Carlo method of graphene with structural defects are presented. The calculations are performed within an effective quantum field theory with non-compact $3\hm + 1$--dimensional Abelian gauge field and $2\hm + 1$--dimensional Kogut-Susskind fermions. It was found that defects shift the phase transition point semimetal-insulator towards higher values of a substrate permittivity.

Topological and magnetic properties of the QCD vacuum probed by overlap fermions

We study some of the local CP-odd and magnetic properties of the non-Abelian vacuum with use of overlap fermions within the quenched lattice gauge theory. Among these properties are the following: inhomogeneous spatial distribution of the topological charge density (chirality for massless fermions) in SU(2) gluodynamics (for uncooled gauge configurations the chirality is localized on low-dimensional defects with d=2..3, while a sequence of cooling steps gives rise to four-dimensional instantons and hence a four-dimensional structure of the chirality distribution); finite local fluctuations of the chirality growing with the strength of an external magnetic field; magnetization and susceptibility of the QCD vacuum in SU(3) theory; magnetic catalysis of the chiral symmetry breaking, and the electric conductivity of the QCD vacuum in strong magnetic fields.

Vortex liquid in magnetic-field-induced superconducting vacuum of quenched lattice QCD

In the background of the strong magnetic field the vacuum is suggested to possess an electromagnetically superconducting phase characterised by the emergence of inhomogeneous quark-antiquark vector condensates which carry quantum numbers of the charged rho mesons. The rho-meson condensates are inhomogeneous due to the presence of the stringlike defects ("the rho vortices") which are parallel to the magnetic field (the superconducting vacuum phase is similar to the mixed Abrikosov phase of a type-II superconductor). In agreement with these expectations, we have observed the presence of the rho vortices in numerical simulations of the vacuum of the quenched two-color lattice QCD in strong magnetic field background. We have found that in the quenched QCD the rho vortices form a liquid. The transition between the usual (insulator) phase at low B and the superconducting vortex liquid phase at high B turns out to be very smooth, at least in the quenched QCD.

Fractal dimension of the topological charge density distribution in SU(2) lattice gluodynamics

We study the effect of cooling on the spatial distribution of the topological charge density in quenched SU(2) lattice gauge theory with overlap fermions. We show that as the gauge field configurations are cooled, the Hausdorff dimension of regions where the topological charge is localized gradually changes from d = 2..3 towards the total space dimension. Therefore, the cooling procedure destroys some of the essential properties of the topological charge distribution.

Lattice studies of magnetic phenomena in heavy-ion collisions

We review some experimental consequences of the presence of superstrong magnetic fields of order of the nuclear scale in noncentral heavy-ion collisions. We present lattice estimates for the strength of the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) for different quark flavours and argue that the dependence of the anisotropy of the distribution of emitted hadrons on their flavor content might be used as another experimental evidence of the CME. Another possible effect of superstrong magnetic field might be the observed abnormal enhancement of dilepton yield. We show that the presence of the magnetic field leads to a specific anisotropy of the dilepton emission rate.

Numerical study of the conductivity of graphene monolayer within the effective field theory approach

We report on the direct numerical measurements of the conductivity of graphene monolayer. Our numerical simulations are performed in the effective lattice field theory with noncompact 3 + 1-dimensional Abelian lattice gauge fields and 2 + 1-dimensional staggered lattice fermions. The conductivity is obtained from the Green-Kubo relations using the Maximum Entropy Method. We find that in a phase with spontaneously broken sublattice symmetry the conductivity rapidly decreases. For the largest value of the coupling constant used in our simulations g = 4.5, the DC conductivity is less than the DC conductivity in the weak-coupling phase (at g < 3.5) by at least three orders of magnitude.

Effective constraint potential in lattice Weinberg - Salam model

We investigate lattice Weinberg - Salam model without fermions for the value of the Weinberg angle $θ_W \sim 30^o$, and bare fine structure constant around $α\sim 1/150$. We consider the value of the scalar self coupling corresponding to bare Higgs mass around 150 GeV. The effective constraint potential for the zero momentum scalar field is used in order to investigate phenomena existing in the vicinity of the phase transition between the physical Higgs phase and the unphysical symmetric phase of the lattice model. This is the region of the phase diagram, where the continuum physics is to be approached. We compare the above mentioned effective potential (calculated in selected gauges) with the effective potential for the value of the scalar field at a fixed space - time point. We also calculate the renormalized fine structure constant using the correlator of Polyakov lines and compare it with the one - loop perturbative estimate.

Finite temperature phase transition with two flavors of improved Wilson fermions

The critical temperature is computed for N_f = 2 dynamical flavors of nonperturbatively improved Wilson fermions. The new simulations are performed on lattices 40^3 x 14 with lattice spacing and pion mass about 0.08 fm and 200 MeV, respectively. We find the deconfinement and chiral phase transitions to coincide within numerical precision. Our results are in broad agreement with a second order phase transition in the chiral limit. The critical temperature at the physical quark mass is found to be T_c = 172(3)(6) MeV.

The Chiral Magnetic Effect and chiral symmetry breaking in SU(3) quenched lattice gauge theory

We study some properties of the non-Abelian vacuum induced by strong external magnetic field. We perform calculations in the quenched SU(3) lattice gauge theory with tadpole-improved Luscher-Weisz action and chirally invariant lattice Dirac operator. The following results are obtained: The chiral symmetry breaking is enhanced by the magnetic field. The chiral condensate depends on the strength of the applied field as a power function with exponent n = 1.6 +/- 0.2. There is a paramagnetic polarization of the vacuum. The corresponding susceptibility and other magnetic properties are calculated and compared with the theoretical estimations. There are non-zero local fluctuations of the chirality and electromagnetic current, which grow with the magnetic field strength. These fluctuations can be a manifestation of the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME).

Magnetic-Field-Induced insulator-conductor transition in SU(2) quenched lattice gauge theory

We study the correlator of two vector currents in quenched $SU\lr{2}$ lattice gauge theory with a chirally invariant lattice Dirac operator with a constant external magnetic field. It is found that in the confinement phase the correlator of the components of the current parallel to the magnetic field decays much slower than in the absence of a magnetic field, while for other components the correlation length slightly decreases. We apply the maximal entropy method to extract the corresponding spectral function. In the limit of zero frequency this spectral function yields the electric conductivity of the quenched theory. We find that in the confinement phase the external magnetic field induces nonzero electric conductivity along the direction of the field, transforming the system from an insulator into an anisotropic conductor. In the deconfinement phase the conductivity does not exhibit any sizable dependence on the magnetic field.

Probing the finite temperature phase transition with Nf=2 nonperturbatively improved Wilson fermions

The critical temperature and the nature of the QCD finite temperature phase transition are determined for Nf=2 dynamical flavors of nonperturbatively improved Wilson fermions. The calculations are performed on large lattices with temporal extents Nt=12, 10 and 8, and lattice spacings down to a = 0.075 fm. We find the deconfinement and chiral phasetransitions to take place at the same temperature. Our results are in broad agreement with a second order phase transition in the chiral limit. The critical temperature at the physical quark mass is found to be Tc = 174(3)(6) MeV.

Quark mass dependence of the vacuum electric conductivity induced by the magnetic field in SU(2) lattice gluodynamics

We study the electric conductivity of the vacuum of quenched SU(2) lattice gauge theory induced by the magnetic field B as a function of the bare quark mass m. The conductivity grows as the quark mass decreases. Simplest power-like fit indicates that the conductivity behaves as B/sqrt(m). We discuss the implications of this result for dilepton angular distributions in heavy ion collisions.

preprint2009arXiv

Numerical evidence of chiral magnetic effect in lattice gauge theory

The chiral magnetic effect is the generation of electric current of quarks along external magnetic field in the background of topologically nontrivial gluon fields. There is a recent evidence that this effect is observed by the STAR Collaboration in heavy ion collisions at RHIC. In our paper we study qualitative signatures of the chiral magnetic effect using quenched lattice simulations. We find indications that the electric current is indeed enhanced in the direction of the magnetic field both in equilibrium configurations of the quantum gluon fields and in a smooth gluon background with nonzero topological charge. In the confinement phase the magnetic field enhances the local fluctuations of both the electric charge and chiral charge densities. In the deconfinement phase the effects of the magnetic field become smaller, possibly due to thermal screening. Using a simple model of a fireball we obtain a good agreement between our data and experimental results of the STAR Collaboration.

preprint2009arXiv

Numerical study of chiral magnetic effect in quenched SU(2) lattice gauge theory

A possible experimental observation of the chiral magnetic effect in heavy ion collisions at RHIC was recently reported by the STAR Collaboration. We study signatures of this effect in SU(2) lattice gluodynamics with the chirally invariant Dirac operator. We find that at zero temperature the local fluctuations of an electric current of quarks and chirality fluctuations increase with external Abelian magnetic field. The external magnetic field leads to spatial separation of the quark's electric charges. The separation increases with the strength of the magnetic field. As temperature gets higher the dependence of these quantities on the strength of the magnetic field becomes weaker. In the deconfinement phase the local fluctuations of the chiral density and of the spatial components of the quarks electric current are large and are almost independent on the external magnetic field. The local fluctuations of the electric charge density decrease with the strength of the magnetic field in this phase.

Entanglement entropy in gauge theories and the holographic principle for electric strings

We consider quantum entanglement between gauge fields in some region of space A and its complement B. It is argued that the Hilbert space of physical states of gauge theories cannot be decomposed into a direct product of Hilbert spaces of states localized in A and B. The reason is that elementary excitations in gauge theories - electric strings - are associated with closed loops rather than points in space, and there are closed loops which belong both to A and B. Direct product structure and hence the reduction procedure with respect to the fields in B can only be defined if the Hilbert space of physical states is extended by including the states of electric strings which can open on the boundary of A. The positions of string endpoints on this boundary are the additional degrees of freedom which also contribute to the entanglement entropy. We explicitly demonstrate this for the three-dimensional Z2 lattice gauge theory both numerically and using a simple trial ground state wave function. The entanglement entropy appears to be saturated almost completely by the entropy of string endpoints, thus reminding of a ``holographic principle'' in quantum gravity and AdS/CFT correspondence.

Geometry of three dimensional vacuum domains in four dimensional SU(2) gluodynamics

We review briefly recent results of lattice simulations on 3d domains in the vacuum state of SU(2) gluodynamics. The defects are defined as unification of all the negative links in central projection under condition that the total number of negative links is minimized. In the continuum limit, negative links correspond, generally speaking to singular fields. The data indicate that total volume of the defects scales in physical units. We consider also correlator of negative links. The correlator scales in physical units as well, within the error bars. A new observation reported here is a strong anisotropy of the correlator.

Localized eigenmodes of the covariant lattice Laplacian

We study numerically the eigenmode spectrum of the covariant lattice Laplacian, in the fundamental SU(2) color group representation. It is found that eigenmodes at the lower and upper ends of the spectrum are localized, and that the localization volume scales. In contrast, the eigenmodes of the lattice Faddeev-Popov operator are all extended rather than localized (as required for confinement) despite the similarity of the kinetic and Faddeev-Popov operators.

Towards SU(2) invariant formulation of the monopole confinement mechanism

The type of the vacuum is studied numerically in the maximally Abelian (MA) gauge and in the Landau (LA) gauge of SU(2) gluodynamics. The type of the vacuum is determined by a ratio between the dual coherence and the dual penetration lengths. The dual penetration length is determined from correlations between Wilson loops and electric fields in both gauges. The dual coherence length is found from correlations between Wilson loops and dimension-2 operators both in the MA and the LA gauges. This determination of the coherence length is supported by theoretical and numerical observation that the dimension-2 gluon operators in the studied gauges have a strong correlation with the monopole current determined in the MA gauge. We find numerically that the dual penetration lengths and the dual coherence lengths in the LA and the MA gauges are almost the same. Therefore we conclude, that in both gauges the type of the vacuum in the confinement phase is near to the border between the type 1 and the type 2 dual superconductors.

Baryonic Flux in Quenched and Two-Flavor Dynamical QCD after Abelian projection

We study the distribution of color electric flux of the three-quark system in quenched and full QCD (with N_f = 2 flavors of dynamical quarks) at zero and finite temperature. To reduce ultra-violet fluctuations, the calculations are done in the abelian projected theory fixed to the maximally abelian gauge. In the confined phase we find clear evidence for a Y--shape flux tube surrounded and formed by the solenoidal monopole current, in accordance with the dual superconductor picture of confinement. In the deconfined, high temperature phase monopoles cease to condense, and the distribution of the color electric field becomes Coulomb--like.

Finite temperature QCD with two flavors of dynamical quarks on 24^3*10 lattice

We present results obtained in QCD with two flavors of non-perturbatively improved Wilson fermions at finite temperature on $16^3 \times 8$ and $24^3 \times 10$ lattices. We determine the transition temperature in the range of quark masses $0.6<m_π/m_ρ<0.8$ at lattice spacing a$\approx$0.1 fm and extrapolate the transition temperature to the continuum and to the chiral limits.

Finite Temperature QCD with Two Flavors of Non-perturbatively Improved Wilson Fermions

We study QCD with two flavors of non-perturbatively improved Wilson fermions at finite temperature on the $16^3 8$ lattice. We determine the transition temperature at lattice spacings as small as $a \sim 0.12$ fm, and study string breaking below the finite temperature transition. We find that the static potential can be fitted by a two-state ansatz, including a string state and a two-meson state. We investigate the role of Abelian monopoles at finite temperature.

Fine tuned vortices in lattice SU(2) gluodynamics

We report measurements of the action associated with center vortices in SU(2) pure lattice gauge theory. In the lattice units the excess of the action on the plaquettes belonging to the vortex is approximately a constant, independent on the lattice spacing 'a'. Therefore the action of the center vortex is of order 'A/a^2', where 'A' is its area. Since the area 'A' is known to scale in the physical units, the measurements imply that the suppression due to the surface action is balanced, or fine tuned to the entropy factor which is to be an exponential of 'A/a^2'.

Monopole clusters at short and large distances

We present measurements of various geometrical characteristics of monopole clusters in SU(2) lattice gauge theory. The maximal Abelian projection is employed and both infinite, or percolating cluster and finite clusters are considered. In particular, we observe scaling for average length of segments of the percolating cluster between self-crossings, correlators of vacuum monopole currents, angular correlation between links along trajectories. Short clusters are random walks and their spectrum in length corresponds to free particles. At the hadronic scale, on the other hand, the monopole trajectories are no longer random walks. Moreover, we argue that the data on the density of finite clusters suggest that there are long-range correlations between finite clusters which can be understood as association of the clusters with two-dimensional surfaces, whose area scales.

P-vortices, nexuses and effects of Gribov copies in the center gauges

We perform the careful study of the Gribov copies problem in SU(2) lattice gauge theory for maximal direct and maximal indirect center projections. We find that this problem is much more severe than it was thought before. The projected string tension is not in agreement with the physical string tension. We also show that the particle--like objects, nexuses, might be important for the confinement dynamics.

Heavy monopole potential in gluodynamics

We discuss predictions for the interaction energy of the fundamental monopoles in gluodynamics introduced via the 't Hooft loop. At short distances, the heavy monopole potential is calculable from first principles. At larger distances, we apply the Abelian dominance models. We discuss the measurements which would be crucial to distinguish between various models. Non-zero temperatures are also considered. Our predictions are in qualitative agreement with the existing lattice data. We discuss further measurements which would be crucial to check the model.

An Almost Perfect Quantum Lattice Action for Low-energy SU(2) Gluodynamics

We study various representations of infrared effective theory of SU(2) Gluodynamics as a (quantum) perfect lattice action. In particular we derive a monopole action and a string model of hadrons from SU(2) Gluodynamics. These are lattice actions which give almost cut-off independent physical quantities even on coarse lattices. The monopole action is determined by numerical simulations in the infrared region of SU(2) Gluodynamics. The string model of hadrons is derived from the monopole action by using BKT transformation. We illustrate the method and evaluate physical quantities such as the string tension and the mass of the lowest state of the glueball analytically using the string model of hadrons. It turns out that the classical results in the string model is near to the one in quantum SU(2) Gluodynamics.

Dirac Strings and Monopoles in the Continuum Limit of SU(2) Lattice Gauge Theory

Magnetic monopoles are known to emerge as leading non-perturbative fluctuations in the lattice version of non-Abelian gauge theories in some gauges. In terms of the Dirac quantization condition, these monopoles have magnetic charge |Q_M|=2. Also, magnetic monopoles with |Q_M|=1 can be introduced on the lattice via the 't Hooft loop operator. We consider the |Q_M|=1,2 monopoles in the continuum limit of the lattice gauge theories. To substitute for the Dirac strings which cost no action on the lattice, we allow for singular gauge potentials which are absent in the standard continuum version. Once the Dirac strings are allowed, it turns possible to find a solution with zero action for a monopole--antimonopole pair. This implies equivalence of the standard and modified continuum versions in perturbation theory. To imitate the nonperturbative vacuum, we introduce then a nonsingular background. The modified continuum version of the gluodynamics allows in this case for monopoles with finite non-vanishing action. Using similar techniques, we construct the 't Hooft loop operator in the continuum and predict its behavior at small and large distances both at zero and high temperatures.

P-vortices and Drama of Gribov Copies

We present results of the careful study of the Gribov copies problem in SU(2) lattice gauge theory for the direct maximal center projection widely used in confinement studies. Applying simulated annealing algorithm we demonstrate that this problem is more severe than it was thought before. The projected (gauge noninvariant) string tension is not in the agreement with the physical string tension. We do not find any indications that P-vortices reproduce the full SU(2) string tension neither in the infinite volume limit nor in the continuum limit.

Abelian Dyons in the Maximal Abelian Projection of SU(2) Gluodynamics

Correlations of the topological charge Q, the electric current J^e and the magnetic current J^m in SU(2) lattice gauge theory in the Maximal Abelian projection are investigated. It occurs that the correlator <<QJ^e J^m>> is nonzero for a wide range of values of the bare charge. It is shown that: (i) the abelian monopoles in the Maximal Abelian projection are dyons which carry fluctuating electric charge; (ii) the sign of the electric charge e(x) coincides with that of the product of the monopole charge m(x) and the topological charge density Q(x).

Aharonov-Bohm effect, Center Monopoles and Center Vortices in SU(2) Lattice Gluodynamics

SU(2) gluodynamics is investigated numerically and analytically in the (Indirect) Maximal Center gauge at finite temperature. The center vortices are shown to be condensed in the confinement phase and dilute in the deconfinement phase. A new physical object, center monopole, is constructed. We show that the center monopole condensate is the order parameter of deconfinement phase transition. The linking of the vortex worldsheets and quark trajectories is identified with the Aharonov-Bohm interaction in an effective Abelian Higgs theory. We conclude that the confinement in the Maximal Center gauge can be explained by a new mechanism called "the real superconductor mechanism".

Strings and Aharonov-Bohm Effect in Abelian Higgs Model

We investigate numerically the properties of the Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen strings in 4D abelian Higgs model. The fractal dimension D_f of the vortex strings was found to be large in the Coulomb phase and it is close to 2 in the Higgs phase. We also show that the Wilson loop for non-integer charges is correlated with the linking number of the vortex string world sheets and the test particle world trajectory. We find that this topological (Aharonov-Bohm) interaction gives the main contribution to the Wilson loop quantum average for non-integer test charges in the vicinity of the Coulomb-Higgs phase transition.

Aharonov-Bohm Effect in Lattice Abelian Higgs Theory

We study a field-theoretical analogue of the Aharonov-Bohm effect in two-, three- and four-dimensional Abelian Higgs models; the corresponding topological interaction is proportional to the linking number of the Abrikosov vortex and the particle world trajectories. We show that the Aharonov-Bohm effect gives rise to a nontrivial interaction of charged test particles. The numerical calculations in the three-dimensional model confirm this fact.

Various representations of infrared effective lattice QCD

We study various representations of the infrared effective theory of SU(2) gluodynamics starting from the monopole action derived recently. We determine the coupling constants in the abelian-Higgs model directly from lattice QCD and evaluate the type of the QCD vacuum. TOPOLOGICAL OBJECTS AND CONFINEMENT ON THE LATTICE

First we discuss various topological objects (monopoles, ``minopoles'' and ``hybrids'') which may be important for the confinement mechanism in various abelian projections. The second topic is the string between quark and antiquark. The standard quantum string with the Nambu-Goto action exists only in D=26. If we start from the field theory, in which the string excitations exist, and change the variables in the path integral to the string variables, then the Jacobian appears. This Jacobian generates the correction to the Nambu-Goto action. For this effective action the conformal anomaly cancels in D=4. Thus we get the quantum string theory in D=4.

"Confinement Mechanism in Various Abelian Projections of $SU(2)$ Lattice Gluodynamics"

We show that the monopole confinement mechanism in lattice gluodynamics is a particular feature of the maximal abelian projection. We give an explicit example of the $SU(2) \rightarrow U(1)$ projection (the minimal abelian projection), in which the confinement is due to topological objects other than monopoles. We perform analytical and numerical study of the loop expansion of the Faddeev--Popov determinant for the maximal and the minimal abelian projections, and discuss the fundamental modular region for these projections.

Compact QED in Landau Gauge: a lattice gauge fixing case study

We derive different representations of compact QED fixed to Landau gauge by the lattice Faddeev-Popov procedure. Our analysis finds that (A)Nielsen-Olesen vortices arising from the compactness of the gauge-fixing action are {\it quenched\/}, that is, the Faddeev-Popov determinant cancels them out and they do not influence correlation functions such as the photon propagator; (B)Dirac strings are responsible for the nonzero mass pole of the photon propagator. Since in $D=3+1$ the photon mass undergoes a rapid drop to zero at $β_c$, the deconfinement point, this result predicts that Dirac strings must be sufficiently dilute at $β> β_c$. Indeed, numerical simulations reveal that the string density undergoes a rapid drop to near zero at $β\sim β_c$.

Properties of the Abelian Projection Fields in $SU(N)$ Lattice Gluodynamics

't~Hooft's abelian projection of $SU(N)$ gauge theory yields $N$ mutually constrained, compact abelian fields which are permutationally equivalent. We formulate the notion of ``species permutation'' symmetry of the $N$ abelian projection fields and discuss its consequences for cross-species correlators. We show that at large $N$ cross-species interactions are ${1\over N}$ suppressed relative to same-species interactions. Numerical simulations at $N=3$ support our symmetry arguments and reveal the existence of inter-species interactions of size ${\cal O\/}\bigl({1\over N-1}\bigr)$ as analytically predicted.

String Representation of the Abelian Higgs Theory and Aharonov-Bohm Effect on the Lattice

The partition function of the $4D$ lattice Abelian Higgs theory is represented as the sum over world sheets of Nielsen--Olesen strings. The creation and annihilation operators of the strings are constructed. The topological long--range interaction of the strings and charged particles is shown to exist; it is proportional to the linking number of the string world sheet and particle world trajectory.
