Structural defects and electronic structure of N-ion implanted TiO2: bulk versus thin film

Systematic investigation of atomic structure of N-ion implanted TiO2 (thin films and bulk ceramics) was performed by XPS measurements (core levels and valence bands) and first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In bulk samples experiment and theory demonstrate anion N->O substitution. For the thin films case experiments evidence valuable contributions from N2 and NO molecule-like structures and theoretical modeling reveals a possibility of formation of these species as result of the appearance of interstitial nitrogen defects on the various surfaces of TiO2. Energetics of formation of oxygen vacancies and its key role for band gap reduction is also discussed.

Characterization of TiAlSiON Coatings Deposited by Plasma Enhanced Magnetron Sputtering: XRD, XPS, and DFT Studies

The results of characterization of TiAlSiON hard coatings deposited on ferric-chromium AISI 430 stainless steel by plasma enhanced magnetron sputtering are presented. The coating with maximum hardness (of 45 GPa) was obtained at the following optimal values of elemental concentrations: Si ~5 at.%, Al ~15 at.%, and Ti ~27 at.%. The elastic modulus of the coating was 590 GPa. The reading of gaseous mixture (Ar-N2) pressure was 1*10-3 Torr and the reading of partial pressure of oxygen (O2) was 1*10-5 Torr. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements showed the presence of Ti(Al)N. High-energy resolved XPS spectra of core levels revealed the formation of Ti-N, Ti-O-N, Si-N and Al-O-N bonds. Comparison of XPS valence band spectra with specially performed density functional theory calculations for two ordered and few disordered TiN1-xOx (0 =< x <= 1) demonstrates that a Ti(Al)OxNy phase is formed on the surface of AISI430 steel upon the plasma enhanced magnetron sputtering, which provides this material with a good combination of high hardness and improved oxidation resistance.

CPA for strongly correlated systems: Electronic structure and magnetic properties of NiO-ZnO solid solutions

The method of electronic structure calculations for strongly correlated disordered materials is developed employing the basic idea of coherent potential approximation (CPA). Evolution of electronic structure and spin magnetic moment value with concentration $x$ in strongly correlated Ni$_{1-x}$Zn$_x$O solid solutions is investigated in the frame of this method. The obtained values of energy gap and magnetic moment are in agreement with the available experimental data.

Pressure-induced spin transition of Fe$^{2+}$ ion in ferropericlase from Dynamical Mean-Field Theory

The results of magnetic and spectral properties calculation for paramagnetic phase of ferropericlase (Fe$_{1/4}$Mg$_{3/4}$)O at ambient and high pressures are reported. Calculations were performed by combined Local Density Approximation + Dynamical Mean-Field Theory method (LDA+DMFT). At ambient pressure calculation gave (Fe$_{1/4}$Mg$_{3/4}$)O as insulator with Fe 3$d$-shell in high-spin state. Experimentally observed high-spin to low-spin transition of Fe$^{2+}$ ion at high pressure is successfully reproduced in calculations. Our results indicate the absence of metal-insulator transition up to the pressure 107~GPa.

The nature of the ferromagnetic ground state in the Mn4 molecular magnet

Using ab initio band structure and model calculations we studied magnetic properties of one of the Mn$_4$ molecular magnets (Mn4(hmp)6), where two types of the Mn ions exist: Mn3+ and Mn2+. The direct calculation of the exchange constants in the GGA+U approximation shows that in contrast to a common belief the strongest exchange coupling is not between two Mn3+ ions (J_{bb}), but along two out of four exchange paths connecting Mn3+ and Mn2+ ions (J_{wb}). The microscopic analysis performed within the perturbation theory allowed to establish the mechanism for this largest ferromagnetic exchange constant. The charge ordering of the Mn ions results in the situation when the energy of the excited state in the exchange process is defined not by the large on-site Coulomb repulsion U, but by much smaller energy V, which stabilizes the charge ordered state. Together with strong Hund's rule coupling and specific orbital order this leads to a large ferromagnetic exchange interaction for two out of four Mn2+ --Mn3+ pairs.

Electronic structure and magnetic state of transuranium metals under pressure

Electronic structure of bcc Np, fcc Pu, Am, and Cm pure metals under pressure has been investigated employing the LDA+U method with spin-orbit coupling (LDA+U+SO). Magnetic state of the actinide ions was analyzed in both LS and jj coupling schemes to reveal the applicability of corresponding coupling bases. It was demonstrated that whereas Pu and Am are well described within the jj coupling scheme, Np and Cm can be described appropriately neither in {m-sigma}, nor in {jmj} basis, due to intermediate coupling scheme realizing in these metals that requires some finer treatment. The LDA+U+SO results for the considered transuranium metals reveal bands broadening and gradual 5f electron delocalization under pressure.

Evolution of electrical resistivity and electronic structure of transuranium metals under pressure: Numerical investigations

The influence of electronic structure evolution upon pressure on the temperature dependencies of electrical resistivity of pure Np, Pu, Am, and Cm metals have been investigated within coherent potential approximation (CPA) for many-bands conductivity model. Electronic structure of pure actinide metals was calculated within the local density approximation with the Hubbard U and spin-orbit coupling corrections (LDA+U+SO) method in various phases at normal conditions and under pressure. They were compared with the corresponding cubic (bcc or fcc) phases. The densities of states of the latter were used as a starting point of model investigations of electrical resistivity. The obtained results were found in good agreement with available experimental data. The nature of large magnitude of resistivity of actinides was discussed in terms of the proposed conductivity model using the ab initio calculated parameters.

Electronic structure of CaFe2As2: Contribution of itinerant Fe 3d-states to the Fermi Level

We present density functional theory (DFT) calculations and a full set of X-ray spectra (resonant inelastic X-ray scattering and X-ray photoelectron spectra) measurements of single crystal CaFe2As2. The experimental valence band spectra are consistent with our DFT calculations. Both theory and experiment show that the Fe 3d-states dominate the Fermi level and hybridize with Ca 3d-states. The simple shape of Xray photoelectron (XPS) Fe 2p-core level spectrum (without any satellite structure typical for correlated systems) suggests itinerant character of the Fe 3d-electrons. Based on the similarity of the calculated and experimental Fe 3d-states distribution in LaOFeAs and CaFe2As2 we conclude that superconductivity in the FeAs-systems can be described within a minimal model, taking into account only Fe 3d-bands close to the Fermi level.

Orbital selective local moment formation in iron: first principle route to an effective model

We revisit a problem of theoretical description of alpha-iron. By performing LDA+DMFT calculations in the paramagnetic phase we find that Coulomb interaction and, in particular Hund exchange, yields the formation of local moments in e_g electron band, which can be traced from imaginary time dependence of the spin-spin correlation function. This behavior is accompanied by non-Fermi-liquid behavior of e_g electrons and suggests using local moment variables in the effective model of iron. By investigating orbital-selective contributions to the Curie-Weiss law for Hund exchange I=0.9 eV we obtain an effective value of local moment of e_g electrons 2p=1.04 mu_B. The effective bosonic model, which allows to describe magnetic properties of iron near the magnetic phase transition, is proposed.

The electronic structure of LiFeAs and NaFeAs probed by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectra

Results of resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements at Fe L-edges and electronic structure calculations of LiFeAs and NaFeAs are presented. Both experiment and theory show that in the vicinity of the Fermi energy, the density of states is dominated by contributions from Fe 3d-states. The comparison of Fe L2,3 non-resonant and resonant (excited at L2-threshold) X-ray emission spectra with spectra of LaOFeAs and CaFe2As2 show a great similarity in energy and I(L2)/I(L3) intensity ratio. The I(L2)/I(L3) intensity ratio of all FeAs-based superconductors is found to be more similar to metallic Fe than to correlated FeO. Basing on these measurements we conclude that iron-based superconductors are weakly or moderately correlated systems.

Orbital densities functional

Local density approximation (LDA) to the density functional theory (DFT) has continuous derivative of total energy as a number of electrons function and continuous exchange-correlation potential, while in exact DFT both should be discontinuous as number of electrons goes through an integer value. We propose orbital densities functional (ODF) (with orbitals defined as Wannier functions) that by construction obeys this discontinuity condition. By its variation one-electron equations are obtained with potential in the form of projection operator. The operator increases a separation between occupied and empty bands thus curing LDA deficiency of energy gap value systematic underestimation. Orbital densities functional minimization gives ground state orbital and total electron densities. The ODF expression for the energy of orbital densities fluctuations around the ground state values defines ODF fluctuation Hamiltonian that allows to treat correlation effects. Dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) was used to solve this Hamiltonian with quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method for effective impurity problem. We have applied ODF method to the problem of metal-insulator transition in lanthanum trihydride LaH_{3-x}. In LDA calculations ground state of this material is metallic for all values of hydrogen nonstoichiometry x while experimentally the system is insulating for x < 0.3. ODF method gave paramagnetic insulator solution for LaH_3 and LaH_{2.75} but metallic state for LaH_{2.5}.

Charge and orbital order in Fe_3O_4

Charge and orbital ordering in the low-temperature monoclinic structure of magnetite (Fe_3O_4) is investigated using LSDA+U. While the difference between t_{2g} minority occupancies of Fe^{2+}_B and Fe^{3+}_B cations is large and gives direct evidence for charge ordering, the screening is so effective that the total 3d charge disproportion is rather small. The charge order has a pronounced [001] modulation, which is incompatible with the Anderson criterion. The orbital order agrees with the Kugel-Khomskii theory.

Parameters of the Effective Singlet-Triplet Model for Band Structure of High-$T_c$ Cuprates by Different Approaches

The present paper covers the problem of parameters determination for High-$T_c$ superconductive copper oxides. Different approaches, {\it ab initio} LDA and LDA+U calculations and Generalized Tight-Binding (GTB) method for strongly correlated electron systems, are used to calculate hopping and exchange parameters of the effective singlet-triplet model for $CuO_2$-layer. The resulting parameters are in remarkably good agreement with each other and with parameters extracted from experiment. This set of parameters is proposed for proper quantitative description of physics of hole doped High-$T_c$ cuprates in the framework of effective models.
