Emergence of quantum critical charge and spin-state fluctuations near the pressure-induced Mott transition in MnO, FeO, CoO, and NiO

We perform a comprehensive theoretical study of the pressure-induced evolution of the electronic structure, magnetic state, and phase stability of the late transition metal monoxides MnO, FeO, CoO, and NiO using a fully charge self-consistent DFT+dynamical mean-field theory method. Our results reveal that the pressure-induced Mott insulator-to-metal phase transition in MnO-NiO is accompanied by a simultaneous collapse of local magnetic moments and lattice volume, implying a complex interplay between chemical bonding and electronic correlations. We compute the pressure-induced evolution of relative weights of the different valence states and spin-state configurations. Employing the concept of fluctuating valence in a correlated solid, we demonstrate that in MnO, FeO, and CoO a Mott insulator-metal transition and collapse of the local moments is accompanied by a sharp crossover of the spin-state and valence configurations. Our microscopic explanation of the magnetic collapse differs from the accepted picture and points out a remarkable dynamical coexistence (frustration) of the high-, intermediate-, and low-spin states. In particular, in MnO, the magnetic collapse is found to be driven by the appearance of the intermediate-spin state (IS), competing with the low-spin (LS) state; in FeO, we observe a conventional high-spin to low-spin (HS-LS) crossover. Most interestingly, in CoO, we obtain a remarkable (dynamical) coexistence of the HS and LS states, i.e., a HS-LS frustration, up to high pressure. Our results demonstrate the importance of quantum fluctuations of the valence and spin states for the understanding of quantum criticality of the Mott transitions.

Influence of Hund's exchange and spin-orbit coupling on spectral properties of fcc-Ce: DFT+DMFT study

Spectral properties of fcc-Ce have been calculated in frames of modern DFT+DMFT method with Hybridization expansion CT-QMC solver. The influence of Hund's exchange and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) on spectral properties of Ce were investigated. SOC is responsible for the shape of spectra near the Fermi level and Hund's exchange interaction doesn't change the obtained spectra and can be neglected.

Pressure-induced spin transition of Fe$^{2+}$ ion in ferropericlase from Dynamical Mean-Field Theory

The results of magnetic and spectral properties calculation for paramagnetic phase of ferropericlase (Fe$_{1/4}$Mg$_{3/4}$)O at ambient and high pressures are reported. Calculations were performed by combined Local Density Approximation + Dynamical Mean-Field Theory method (LDA+DMFT). At ambient pressure calculation gave (Fe$_{1/4}$Mg$_{3/4}$)O as insulator with Fe 3$d$-shell in high-spin state. Experimentally observed high-spin to low-spin transition of Fe$^{2+}$ ion at high pressure is successfully reproduced in calculations. Our results indicate the absence of metal-insulator transition up to the pressure 107~GPa.

Magnetic susceptibility of Ce: an LDA+DMFT study

The magnetic properties of Ce in the $α$ and $γ$ phase are calculated within the LDA+DMFT approach. The magnetic susceptibility in these two phases shows a similar behavior over a wide temperature range: a Curie-Weiss law at high temperatures, indicating the presence of local moments, followed by a maximum in a crossover regime, and a saturation characteristic of a state with screened local moments at low temperature. The difference in experimentally observable magnetic properties is caused by the shift of the susceptibility to higher temperatures in the $α-$phase compared to the $γ-$phase, due to the larger hybridization between localized $4f-$states and conductive $spd-$electrons.

Role of electronic correlations in the Fermi surface formation of Na$_x$CoO$_2$

Band structure of metallic sodium cobaltate Na$_x$CoO$_2$ ($x$=0.33, 0.48, 0.61 0.72) has been investigated by local density approximation+Hubbard $U$ (LDA+$U$) method and within Gutzwiller approximation for the Co-$t_{2g}$ manifold. Correlation effects being taken into account results in suppression of the $e'_g$ hole pockets at the Fermi surface in agreement with recent angle-resolved photo-emission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments. In the Gutzwiller approximation the bilayer splitting is significantly reduced due to the correlation effects. The formation of high spin (HS) state in Co $d$-shell was shown to be very improbable.

Applicability of Anderson and Hubbard model for Ce metal and cerium heavy fermion compounds

The importance of taking into account inter-site $f-f$ hybridization in electron structure calculations for Ce metal and cerium heavy fermion compounds was studied. We demonstrate that for heavy-fermion systems such as cerium compound CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ $f-f$ hybridization can be neglected and Anderson model application is well justified. On another hand for cerium metal $f-f$ hybridization is strong enough to provide the contribution to hybridization function comparable to hybridization between $4f$ and itinerant electrons. We argue that in the case of Ce only the most general Hamiltonian combining Hubbard and Anderson models should be used.

Electronic structure and magnetic state of transuranium metals under pressure

Electronic structure of bcc Np, fcc Pu, Am, and Cm pure metals under pressure has been investigated employing the LDA+U method with spin-orbit coupling (LDA+U+SO). Magnetic state of the actinide ions was analyzed in both LS and jj coupling schemes to reveal the applicability of corresponding coupling bases. It was demonstrated that whereas Pu and Am are well described within the jj coupling scheme, Np and Cm can be described appropriately neither in {m-sigma}, nor in {jmj} basis, due to intermediate coupling scheme realizing in these metals that requires some finer treatment. The LDA+U+SO results for the considered transuranium metals reveal bands broadening and gradual 5f electron delocalization under pressure.

Evolution of electrical resistivity and electronic structure of transuranium metals under pressure: Numerical investigations

The influence of electronic structure evolution upon pressure on the temperature dependencies of electrical resistivity of pure Np, Pu, Am, and Cm metals have been investigated within coherent potential approximation (CPA) for many-bands conductivity model. Electronic structure of pure actinide metals was calculated within the local density approximation with the Hubbard U and spin-orbit coupling corrections (LDA+U+SO) method in various phases at normal conditions and under pressure. They were compared with the corresponding cubic (bcc or fcc) phases. The densities of states of the latter were used as a starting point of model investigations of electrical resistivity. The obtained results were found in good agreement with available experimental data. The nature of large magnitude of resistivity of actinides was discussed in terms of the proposed conductivity model using the ab initio calculated parameters.

LDA+DMFT Spectral Functions and Effective Electron Mass Enhancement in Superconductor LaFePO

In this Letter we report the first LDA+DMFT results (method combining Local Density Approximation with Dynamical Mean-Field Theory) for spectral properties of superconductor LaFePO. Calculated {\bf k}-resolved spectral functions reproduce recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data [D. H. Lu {\it et al}., Nature {\bf 455}, 81 (2008)]. Obtained effective electron mass enhancement values $m^{*}/m\approx$ 1.9 -- 2.2 are in good agreement with infrared and optical studies [M. M. Qazilbash {\it et al}., Nature Phys. {\bf 5}, 647 (2009)], de Haas--van Alphen, electrical resistivity, and electronic specific heat measurements results, that unambiguously evidence for moderate correlations strength in LaFePO. Similar values of $m^{*}/m$ were found in the other Fe-based superconductors with substantially different superconducting transition temperatures. Thus, the dynamical correlation effects are essential in the Fe-based superconductors, but the strength of electronic correlations does not determine the value of superconducting transition temperature.

First-principles investigation of uranium monochalcogenides

We present first-principles investigation of the electronic structure and magnetic properties of uranium monochalcogenides: US, USe, UTe. The calculations were performed by using recently developed LDA+U+SO method in which both Coulomb and spin-orbit interactions have been taken into account in rotationally invariant form. We discuss the problem of choice of the Coulomb interaction value. The calculated [111] easy axes agree with those experimentally observed. The electronic configuration 5$f^3$ was found for all uranium compounds under investigation.

Metal-insulator transition and magnetism in correlated band insulator: FeSi and Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$Si

The LDA+DMFT (local density approximation combined with dynamical mean-field theory) computation scheme has been used to study spectral and magnetic properties of FeSi and Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$Si. Having compared different models we conclude that a correlated band insulator scenario in contrast to Kondo insulator model agrees with FeSi band structure as well as experimental data. Coulomb correlation effects lead to band narrowing of the states near the Fermi level with mass renormalization parameter $m^*\approx 2$ in agreement with the results of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Temperature dependence of spectral functions and magnetic susceptibility calculated in DMFT reproduces transition from nonmagnetic semiconductor to metal with local magnetic moments observed experimentally. Cobalt doping leads to ferromagnetism that has itinerant nature and can be successfully described by LDA+DMFT method.

Orbital selective local moment formation in iron: first principle route to an effective model

We revisit a problem of theoretical description of alpha-iron. By performing LDA+DMFT calculations in the paramagnetic phase we find that Coulomb interaction and, in particular Hund exchange, yields the formation of local moments in e_g electron band, which can be traced from imaginary time dependence of the spin-spin correlation function. This behavior is accompanied by non-Fermi-liquid behavior of e_g electrons and suggests using local moment variables in the effective model of iron. By investigating orbital-selective contributions to the Curie-Weiss law for Hund exchange I=0.9 eV we obtain an effective value of local moment of e_g electrons 2p=1.04 mu_B. The effective bosonic model, which allows to describe magnetic properties of iron near the magnetic phase transition, is proposed.
