Extremal structure in ultrapowers of Banach spaces

Given a bounded convex subset $C$ of a Banach space $X$ and a free ultrafilter $\mathcal U$, we study which points $(x_i)_\mathcal U$ are extreme points of the ultrapower $C_\mathcal U$ in $X_\mathcal U$. In general, we obtain that when $\{x_i\}$ is made of extreme points (respectively denting points, strongly exposed points) and they satisfy some kind of uniformity, then $(x_i)_\mathcal U$ is an extreme point (respectively denting point, strongly exposed point) of $C_\mathcal U$. We also show that every extreme point of $C_{\mathcal U}$ is strongly extreme, and that every point exposed by a functional in $(X^*)_{\mathcal U}$ is strongly exposed, provided that $\mathcal U$ is a countably incomplete ultrafilter. Finally, we analyse the extremal structure of $C_\mathcal U$ in the case that $C$ is a super weakly compact or uniformly convex set.

Lipschitz-free spaces, ultraproducts, and finite representability of metric spaces

We study several properties and applications of the ultrapower $M_{\mathcal U}$ of a metric space $M$. We prove that the Lipschitz-free space $\mathcal F(M_{\mathcal U})$ is finitely representable in $\mathcal F(M)$. We also characterize the metric spaces that are finitely Lipschitz representable in a Banach space as those that biLipschitz embed into an ultrapower of the Banach space. Thanks to this link, we obtain that if $M$ is finitely Lipschitz representable in a Banach space $X$, then $\mathcal F(M)$ is finitely representable in $\mathcal F(X)$. We apply these results to the study of cotype in Lipschitz-free spaces and the stability of Lipschitz-free spaces and spaces of Lipschitz functions under ultraproducts.

Examples and applications of the density of strongly norm attaining Lipschitz maps

We study the density of the set $\operatorname{SNA}(M,Y)$ of those Lipschitz maps from a (complete pointed) metric space $M$ to a Banach space $Y$ which strongly attain their norm (i.e.\ the supremum defining the Lipschitz norm is actually a maximum). We present new and somehow counterintuitive examples, and we give some applications. First, we show that $\operatorname{SNA}(\mathbb T,Y)$ is not dense in ${\mathrm{Lip}}_0(\mathbb T,Y)$ for any Banach space $Y$, where $\mathbb T$ denotes the unit circle in the Euclidean plane. This provides the first example of a Gromov concave metric space (i.e.\ every molecule is a strongly exposed point of the unit ball of the Lipschitz-free space) for which the density does not hold. Next, we construct metric spaces $M$ satisfying that $\operatorname{SNA}(M,Y)$ is dense in ${\mathrm{Lip}}_0(M,Y)$ regardless $Y$ but which contains an isometric copy of $[0,1]$ and so the Lipschitz-free space $\mathcal F(M)$ fails the Radon--Nikodým property, answering in the negative a posed question. Furthermore, an example $M$ can be produced failing all the previously known sufficient conditions to get the density of strongly norm attaining Lipschitz maps. Finally, among other applications, we prove that given a compact metric $M$ which does not contains any isometric copy of $[0,1]$ and a Banach space $Y$, if $\operatorname{SNA}(M,Y)$ is dense, then $\operatorname{SNA}(M,Y)$ actually contains an open dense subset and $B_{\mathcal F(M)}=\overline{\mathrm{co}}(\operatorname{str-exp}(B_{\mathcal F(M)}))$. Further, we show that if $M$ is a boundedly compact metric space for which $\operatorname{SNA}(M,\mathbb R)$ is dense in ${\mathrm{Lip}}_0(M,\mathbb R)$, then the unit ball of the Lipschitz-free space on $M$ is the closed convex hull of its strongly exposed points.

Geometry and volume product of finite dimensional Lipschitz-free spaces

The goal of this paper is to study geometric and extremal properties of the convex body $B_{\mathcal F(M)}$, which is the unit ball of the Lipschitz-free Banach space associated with a finite metric space $M$. We investigate $\ell_1$ and $\ell_\infty$-sums, in particular we characterize the metric spaces such that $B_{\mathcal F(M)}$ is a Hanner polytope. We also characterize the finite metric spaces whose Lipschitz-free spaces are isometric. We discuss the extreme properties of the volume product $\mathcal{P}(M)=|B_{\mathcal F(M)}|\cdot|B_{\mathcal F(M)}^\circ|$, when the number of elements of $M$ is fixed. We show that if $\mathcal P(M)$ is maximal among all the metric spaces with the same number of points, then all triangle inequalities in $M$ are strict and $B_{\mathcal F(M)}$ is simplicial. We also focus on the metric spaces minimizing $\mathcal P(M)$, and in the Mahler's conjecture for this class of convex bodies.
