From the Jordan product to Riemannian geometries on classical and quantum states

The Jordan product on the self-adjoint part of a finite-dimensional $C^{*}$-algebra $\mathscr{A}$ is shown to give rise to Riemannian metric tensors on suitable manifolds of states on $\mathscr{A}$, and the covariant derivative, the geodesics, the Riemann tensor, and the sectional curvature of all these metric tensors are explicitly computed. In particular, it is proved that the Fisher--Rao metric tensor is recovered in the Abelian case, that the Fubini--Study metric tensor is recovered when we consider pure states on the algebra $\mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H})$ of linear operators on a finite-dimensional Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$, and that the Bures--Helstrom metric tensors is recovered when we consider faithful states on $\mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H})$. Moreover, an alternative derivation of these Riemannian metric tensors in terms of the GNS construction associated to a state is presented. In the case of pure and faithful states on $\mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H})$, this alternative geometrical description clarifies the analogy between the Fubini--Study and the Bures--Helstrom metric tensor.

Strongly homotopy Lie algebras and deformations of calibrated submanifolds

For an element $Ψ$ in the graded vector space $Ω^*(M, TM)$ of tangent bundle valued forms on a smooth manifold $M$, a $Ψ$-submanifold is defined as a submanifold $N$ of $M$ such that $Ψ_{|N} \in Ω^*(N, TN)$. The class of $Ψ$-submanifolds encompasses calibrated submanifolds, complex submanifolds and all Lie subgroups in compact Lie groups. The graded vector space $Ω^*(M, TM)$ carries a natural graded Lie algebra structure, given by the Frölicher-Nijenhuis bracket $[-,- ]^{FN}$. When $Ψ$ is an odd degree element with $[ Ψ, Ψ]^{FN} =0$, we associate to a $Ψ$-submanifold $N$ a strongly homotopy Lie algebra, which governs the formal and (under certain assumptions) smooth deformations of $N$ as a $Ψ$-submanifold, and we show that under certain assumptions these deformations form an analytic variety. As an application we revisit formal and smooth deformation theory of complex closed submanifolds and of $φ$-calibrated closed submanifolds, where $φ$ is a parallel form in a real analytic Riemannian manifold.

Lagrangian submanifolds in strictly nearly Kähler 6-manifolds

Lagrangian submanifolds in strict nearly Kähler 6-manifolds are related to special Lagrangian submanifolds in Calabi-Yau 6-manifolds and coassociative cones in $G_2$-manifolds. We prove that the mean curvature of a Lagrangian submanifold $L$ in a nearly Kähler manifold $(M^{2n}, J, g)$ is symplectically dual to the Maslov 1-form on $L$. Using relative calibrations, we derive a formula for the second variation of the volume of a Lagrangian submanifold $L^3$ in a strict nearly Kähler manifold $(M^6, J, g)$. This formula implies, in particular, that any formal infinitesimal Lagrangian deformation of $L^3$ is a Jacobi field on $L^3$. We describe a finite dimensional local model of the moduli space of compact Lagrangian submanifolds in a strict nearly Kähler 6-manifold. We show that there is a real analytic atlas on $(M^6, J, g)$ in which the strict nearly Kähler structure $(J, g)$ is real analytic. Furthermore, w.r.t. an analytic strict nearly Kähler structure the moduli space of Lagrangian submanifolds of $M^6$ is a real analytic variety, whence infinitesimal Lagrangian deformations are smoothly obstructed if and only if they are formally obstructed. As an application, we relate our results to the description of Lagrangian submanifolds in the sphere $S^6$ with the standard nearly Kähler structure described in \cite{Lotay2012}.

Information geometry and sufficient statistics

Information geometry provides a geometric approach to families of statistical models. The key geometric structures are the Fisher quadratic form and the Amari-Chentsov tensor. In statistics, the notion of sufficient statistic expresses the criterion for passing from one model to another without loss of information. This leads to the question how the geometric structures behave under such sufficient statistics. While this is well studied in the finite sample size case, in the infinite case, we encounter technical problems concerning the appropriate topologies. Here, we introduce notions of parametrized measure models and tensor fields on them that exhibit the right behavior under statistical transformations. Within this framework, we can then handle the topological issues and show that the Fisher metric and the Amari-Chentsov tensor on statistical models in the class of symmetric 2-tensor fields and 3-tensor fields can be uniquely (up to a constant) characterized by their invariance under sufficient statistics, thereby achieving a full generalization of the original result of Chentsov to infinite sample sizes. More generally, we decompose Markov morphisms between statistical models in terms of statistics. In particular, a monotonicity result for the Fisher information naturally follows.

Pluricomplex geometry and hyperbolic monopoles

Motivated by strong desire to understand the natural geometry of moduli spaces of hyperbolic monopoles, we introduce and study a new type of geometry: pluricomplex geometry. It is a generalisation of hypercomplex geometry: we still have a 2-sphere of complex structures, but they no longer behave like unit imaginary quaternions. We still require, however, that the 2-sphere of complex structures determines a decomposition of the complexified tangent space as tensor product of C^{2n} and C^2. Among interesting properties of pluricomplex manifold is the existence of a canonical torsion free connection. Pluricomplex manifolds have also remarkable twistor theory: they parameterise algebraic curves of higher genera.

Addendum to "Classification of irreducible holonomies of torsion-free affine connection"

The real form Spin(6,H) in End(R^{32}) of Spin(12,C) in End(C^{32}) is absolutely irreducible and thus satisfies the algebraic identities (40) and (41). Therefore, it also occurs as an exotic holonomy and the associated supermanifold M_g admits a SUSY-invariant polynomial. This real form has been erroneously omitted in our paper. Also, the two real four-dimensional exotic holonomies, whose occurrences were un known at the time of writing, have been shown to exist very recently by R. Bryant.

Classification of irreducible holonomies of torsion-free affine connections

The subgroups of GL(n,R) that act irreducibly on R^n and that can occur as the holonomy of a torsion-free affine connection on an n-manifold are classified, thus completing the work on this subject begun by M. Berger in the 1950s. The methods employed include representation theory, the theory of hermitian symmetric spaces, twistor theory, and Poisson geometry. The latter theory is especially important for the construction and classification of those torsion-free connections whose holonomy falls into one of the so-called `exotic' cases, i.e., those that were not included in Berger's original lists. Some remarks involving an interpretation of some of the examples in terms of supersymmetric constructions are also included.
