Invariant hypercomplex structures and algebraic curves

We show that U(k)U(k)-invariant hypercomplex structures on (open subsets) of regular semisimple adjoint orbits in gl(k,C)\mathfrak{gl}(k,{\mathbb C}) correspond to algebraic curves CC of genus (k−1)2(k-1)^2, equipped with a flat projection π:C→P1π:C\to{\mathbb P}^1 of degree kk, and an antiholomorphic involution σ:C→Cσ:C\to C covering the antipodal map on P1{\mathbb P}^1.

Slices to sums of adjoint orbits, the Atiyah-Hitchin manifold, and Hilbert schemes of points

We show that the regular Slodowy slice to the sum of two semisimple adjoint orbits of GL(n,C)GL(n,C) is isomorphic to the deformation of the D2D_2-singularity if n=2n=2, the Dancer deformation of the double cover of the Atiyah-Hitchin manifold if n=3n=3, and to the Atiyah-Hitchin manifold itself if n=4n=4. For higher nn, such slices to the sum of two orbits, each having only two distinct eigenvalues, are either empty or biholomorphic to open subsets of the Hilbert scheme of points on of one the above surfaces. In particular, these open subsets of Hilbert schemes of points carry complete hyperkähler metrics. In the case of the double cover of the Atiyah-Hitchin manifold this turns out to be the natural L2L^2-metric on a hyperkähler submanifold of the monopole moduli space.

Pluricomplex geometry and hyperbolic monopoles

Motivated by strong desire to understand the natural geometry of moduli spaces of hyperbolic monopoles, we introduce and study a new type of geometry: pluricomplex geometry. It is a generalisation of hypercomplex geometry: we still have a 2-sphere of complex structures, but they no longer behave like unit imaginary quaternions. We still require, however, that the 2-sphere of complex structures determines a decomposition of the complexified tangent space as tensor product of C^{2n} and C^2. Among interesting properties of pluricomplex manifold is the existence of a canonical torsion free connection. Pluricomplex manifolds have also remarkable twistor theory: they parameterise algebraic curves of higher genera.
