Event Extraction by Associating Event Types and Argument Roles

Event extraction (EE), which acquires structural event knowledge from texts, can be divided into two sub-tasks: event type classification and element extraction (namely identifying triggers and arguments under different role patterns). As different event types always own distinct extraction schemas (i.e., role patterns), previous work on EE usually follows an isolated learning paradigm, performing element extraction independently for different event types. It ignores meaningful associations among event types and argument roles, leading to relatively poor performance for less frequent types/roles. This paper proposes a novel neural association framework for the EE task. Given a document, it first performs type classification via constructing a document-level graph to associate sentence nodes of different types, and adopting a graph attention network to learn sentence embeddings. Then, element extraction is achieved by building a universal schema of argument roles, with a parameter inheritance mechanism to enhance role preference for extracted elements. As such, our model takes into account type and role associations during EE, enabling implicit information sharing among them. Experimental results show that our approach consistently outperforms most state-of-the-art EE methods in both sub-tasks. Particularly, for types/roles with less training data, the performance is superior to the existing methods.

Music Influence Modeling Based on Directed Network Model

Studying the history of music may provide a glimpse into the development of human creativity as we examine the evolutionary and revolutionary trends in music and genres. First, a musical influence metric was created to construct a directed network of musical influence. Second, we examined the revolutions and development of musical genres, modeled the similarity, and explored similarities and influences within and between genres. Hierarchical cluster analysis and time series analysis of genres were used to explore the correlation between genres. Finally, Network Analysis, Semantic Analysis, and Random Forest Model are employed to find the revolutionaries. The above work was applied to Country music to sort out and analyze its evolution. In studying the connection between music and the social environment, time series analysis is used to determine the impact of social, political, or technological changes on music.

Modeling relation paths for knowledge base completion via joint adversarial training

Knowledge Base Completion (KBC), which aims at determining the missing relations between entity pairs, has received increasing attention in recent years. Most existing KBC methods focus on either embedding the Knowledge Base (KB) into a specific semantic space or leveraging the joint probability of Random Walks (RWs) on multi-hop paths. Only a few unified models take both semantic and path-related features into consideration with adequacy. In this paper, we propose a novel method to explore the intrinsic relationship between the single relation (i.e. 1-hop path) and multi-hop paths between paired entities. We use Hierarchical Attention Networks (HANs) to select important relations in multi-hop paths and encode them into low-dimensional vectors. By treating relations and multi-hop paths as two different input sources, we use a feature extractor, which is shared by two downstream components (i.e. relation classifier and source discriminator), to capture shared/similar information between them. By joint adversarial training, we encourage our model to extract features from the multi-hop paths which are representative for relation completion. We apply the trained model (except for the source discriminator) to several large-scale KBs for relation completion. Experimental results show that our method outperforms existing path information-based approaches. Since each sub-module of our model can be well interpreted, our model can be applied to a large number of relation learning tasks.

SIR Model-based Prediction of Infected Population of Coronavirus in Hubei Province

After the sudden outbreak of Coronavirus in Wuhan, continuous and rich data of the epidemic has been made public as the vital fact for decision support in control measures and aggressive implementation of containment strategies and plans. With the further growth and spreading of the virus, future resource allocation and planning under updated strategies and measures rely on careful study of the epidemic data and characteristics for accurate prediction and estimation. By using the SIR model and reported data, key parameters are obtained from least sum of squared errors for an accurate prediction of epidemic trend in the last four weeks.

Two-dimensional rogue waves on zero background of the Davey-Stewartson II equation

A prototypical example of a rogue wave structure in a two-dimensional model is presented in the context of the Davey-Stewartson~II (DS~II) equation arising in water waves. The analytical methodology involves a Taylor expansion of an eigenfunctionof the model's Lax pair which is used to form a hierarchy of infinitely many new eigenfunctions. These are used for the construction of two-dimensional (2D) rogue waves (RWs) of the DS~II equation by the even-fold Darboux transformation (DT). The obtained 2D RWs, which are localized in both space and time, can be viewed as a 2D analogue of the Peregrine soliton and are thus natural candidates to describe oceanic RW phenomena,as well as ones in 2D fluid systems and water tanks.

Tuning and Optimizing the Finite Element Analysis with Elements of Large Nodal DOF on a Linux Cluster

The finite element analysis of high frequency vibrations of quartz crystal plates is a necessary process required in the design of quartz crystal resonators of precision types for applications in filters and sensors. The anisotropic materials and extremely high frequency in radiofrequency range of resonators determine that vibration frequency spectra are complicated with strong couplings of large number of different vibration modes representing deformations which do not appear in usual structural problems. For instance, the higher-order thickness-shear vibrations usually representing the sharp deformation of thin plates in the thickness direction, expecting the analysis is to be done with refined meshing schemes along the relatively small thickness and consequently the large plane area. To be able to represent the precise vibration mode shapes, a very large number of elements are needed in the finite element analysis with either the three-dimensional theory or the higher-order plate theory, although considerable reduction of numbers of degree-of-freedom (DOF) are expected for the two-dimensional analysis without scarifying the accuracy. In this paper, we reviewed the software architecture for the analysis and demonstrated the evaluation and tuning of parameters for the improvement of the analysis with problems of elements with a large number of DOF in each node, or a problem with unusually large bandwidth of the banded stiffness and mass matrices in comparison with conventional finite element formulation. Such a problem can be used as an example for the optimization and tuning of problems from multi-physics analysis which are increasingly important in applications with excessive large number of DOF and bandwidth in engineering.

Few-cycle optical rogue waves:complex modified Korteweg-de Vries equation

In this paper, we consider the complex modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equation as a model of few-cycle optical pulses. Using the Lax pair, we construct a generalized Darboux transformation and systematically generate the first-, second- and third-order rogue wave solutions and analyze the nature of evolution of higher-order rogue waves in detail. Based on detailed numerical and analytical investigations, we classify the higher-order rogue waves with respect to their intrinsic structure, namely, fundamental pattern, triangular pattern, and ring pattern. We also present several new patterns of the rogue wave according to the standard and non-standard decomposition. The results of this paper explain the generalization of higher-order rogue waves in terms of rational solutions. We apply the contour line method to obtain the analytical formulas of the length and width of the first-order RW of the complex mKdV and the NLS equations. In nonlinear optics, the higher-order rogue wave solutions found here will be very useful to generate high-power few-cycle optical pulses which will be applicable in the area of ultra-short pulse technology.

An Analysis of Nonlinear Thickness-shear Vibrations of Quartz Crystal Plates by Two-Dimensional Finite Element Method

A nonlinear analysis of high-frequency thickness-shear vibrations of AT-cut quartz crystal plates is presented with the two-dimensional finite element method. We expanded both kinematic and constitutive nonlinear Mindlin plate equations and then truncated them to the first-order equations as an approximation, which is used later for the formulation of nonlinear finite element analysis with all zeroth- and first-order displacements and electric potentials. The matrix equation of motion is established with the first-order harmonic approximation and the generalized nonlinear eigensystem is solved by a direct iterative procedure. A backbone curve and corresponding mode shapes are obtained and analyzed. The nonlinear finite element program is developed based on earlier linear edition and can be utilized to predict nonlinear characteristics of miniaturized quartz crystal resonators in the design process.

Two kinds of rogue waves of the general nonlinear Schrödinger equation with derivative

In this letter, the designable integrability(DI) of the variable coefficient derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation (VCDNLSE) is shown by construction of an explicit transformation which maps VCDNLSE to the usual derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation(DNLSE). One novel feature of VCDNLSE with DI is that its coefficients can be designed artificially and analytically by using transformation. What is more, from the rogue wave and rational traveling solution of the DNLSE, we get two kinds of rogue waves of the VCDNLSE by this transformation. One kind of rogue wave has vanishing boundary condition, and the other non-vanishing boundary condition. The DI of the VCDNLSE also provides a possible way to control the profile of the rogue wave in physical experiments.

An Efficient Algorithm of Logarithmic Transformation to Hirota Bilinear Form of KdV-type Bilinear Equation

In this paper, an efficient algorithm of logarithmic transformation to Hirota bilinear form of the KdV-type bilinear equation is established. In the algorithm, some properties of Hirota operator and logarithmic transformation are successfully applied, which helps to prove that the linear terms of the nonlinear partial differential equation play a crucial role in finding the Hirota bilinear form. Experimented with various integro-differential equations, our algorithm is proven to be more efficient than the algorithm referred by Zhou, Fu, and Li in getting the Hirota bilinear form, especially in achieving the coefficient of the logarithmic transformation.

Explicit Flow Equations and Recursion Operator of the ncKP hierarchy

The explicit expression of the flow equations of the noncommutative Kadomtsev-Petviashvili(ncKP) hierarchy is derived. Compared with the flow equations of the KP hierarchy, our result shows that the additional terms in the flow equations of the ncKP hierarchy indeed consist of commutators of dynamical coordinates \{$u_i$\}. The recursion operator for the flow equations under $n$-reduction is presented. Further, under 2-reduction, we calculate a nonlocal recursion operator $Φ(2)$ of the noncommutative Korteweg-de Vries(ncKdV) hierarchy, which generates a hierarchy of local, higher-order flows. Thus we solve the open problem proposed by P.J. Olver and V.V. Sokolov(Commun.Math.Phys. 193 (1998), 245-268).

The Darboux transformation of the derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation

The n-fold Darboux transformation (DT) is a 2\times2 matrix for the Kaup-Newell (KN) system. In this paper, each element of this matrix is expressed by a ratio of $(n+1)\times (n+1)$ determinant and $n\times n$ determinant of eigenfunctions. Using these formulae, the expressions of the $q^{[n]}$ and $r^{[n]}$ in KN system are generated by n-fold DT. Further, under the reduction condition, the rogue wave, rational traveling solution, dark soliton, bright soliton, breather solution, periodic solution of the derivative nonlinear Schrödinger(DNLS) equation are given explicitly by different seed solutions. In particular, the rogue wave and rational traveling solution are two kinds of new solutions. The complete classification of these solutions generated by one-fold DT is given in the table on page.

Recursion operators for KP, mKP and Harry-Dym Hierarchies

In this paper, we give a unified construction of the recursion operators from the Lax representation for three integrable hierarchies: Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP), modified Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (mKP) and Harry-Dym under $n$-reduction. This shows a new inherent relationship between them. To illustrate our construction, the recursion operator are calculated explicitly for $2$-reduction and $3$-reduction.

Strong invariance principles for sequential Bahadur--Kiefer and Vervaat error processes of long-range dependent sequences

In this paper we study strong approximations (invariance principles) of the sequential uniform and general Bahadur--Kiefer processes of long-range dependent sequences. We also investigate the strong and weak asymptotic behavior of the sequential Vervaat process, that is, the integrated sequential Bahadur--Kiefer process, properly normalized, as well as that of its deviation from its limiting process, the so-called Vervaat error process. It is well known that the Bahadur--Kiefer and the Vervaat error processes cannot converge weakly in the i.i.d. case. In contrast to this, we conclude that the Bahadur--Kiefer and Vervaat error processes, as well as their sequential versions, do converge weakly to a Dehling--Taqqu type limit process for certain long-range dependent sequences.
