Logarithmic Corrections to the Entropy of Rotating Black Holes and Black Strings in AdS$_5$

We investigate logarithmic corrections to the entropy of supersymmetric, rotating, asymptotically AdS$_5$ black holes and black strings. Within the framework of the AdS/CFT correspondence, the entropy of these black objects is determined, on the field theory side, by the superconformal index and the refined topologically twisted index of $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, respectively. We read off the logarithmic correction from those field-theoretic partition functions. On the gravity side, we take the near-horizon limit and apply the Kerr/CFT correspondence whose associated charged Cardy formula describes the degeneracy of states at subleading order and determines the logarithmic correction to the entropy. We find perfect agreement between these two approaches. Our results provide a window into precision microstate counting and demonstrate the efficacy of low-energy, symmetry-based approaches such as the Kerr/CFT correspondence for asymptotically AdS black objects under certain conditions.

Sub-leading Structures in Superconformal Indices: Subdominant Saddles and Logarithmic Contributions

We systematically study various sub-leading structures in the superconformal index of ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with SU($N$) gauge group. We concentrate in the superconformal index description as a matrix model of elliptic gamma functions and in the Bethe-Ansatz presentation. Our saddle-point approximation goes beyond the Cardy-like limit and we uncover various saddles governed by a matrix model corresponding to SU($N$) Chern-Simons theory. The dominant saddle, however, leads to perfect agreement with the Bethe-Ansatz approach. We also determine the logarithmic correction to the superconformal index to be $\log N$, finding precise agreement between the saddle-point and Bethe-Ansatz approaches in their respective approximations. We generalize the two approaches to cover a large class of 4d ${\cal N}=1$ superconformal theories. We find that also in this case both approximations agree all the way down to a universal contribution of the form $\log N$. The universality of this last result constitutes a robust signature of this ultraviolet description of asymptotically AdS$_5$ black holes and could be tested by low-energy IIB supergravity.

Gravitational Cardy Limit and AdS Black Hole Entropy

We explore the gravitational implementation of the field theory Cardy-like limit recently used in the successful microstate countings of AdS black hole entropy in various dimensions. On the field theory side, the Cardy-like limit focuses on a particular scaling of conserved electric charges and angular momenta, and we first translate this scaling to the gravitational side by a limiting procedure on the black hole parameters. We note that the scaling naturally accompanies a near-horizon region for which these black hole solutions are greatly simplified. Applying the Kerr/CFT correspondence to the near-horizon region, we precisely reproduce the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of asymptotically AdS$_{4, 5, 6, 7}$ BPS black holes. Our results explicitly provide a microscopic and universal low energy description for AdS black holes across various dimensions.

Microstate Counting via Bethe Ansätze in the 4d ${\cal N}=1$ Superconformal Index

We study the superconfomal index of four-dimensional toric quiver gauge theories using a Bethe Ansatz approach recently applied by Benini and Milan. Relying on a particular set of solutions to the corresponding Bethe Ansatz equations we evaluate the superconformal index in the large $N$ limit, thus avoiding to take any Cardy-like limit. We present explicit results for theories arising as a stack of $N$ D3 branes at the tip of toric Calabi-Yau cones: the conifold theory, the suspended pinch point gauge theory, the first del Pezzo theory and $Y^{p,q}$ quiver gauge theories. For a suitable choice of the chemical potentials of the theory we find agreement with predictions made for the same theories in the Cardy-like limit. However, for other regions of the domain of chemical potentials the superconformal index is modified and consequently the associated black hole entropy receives corrections. We work out explicitly the simple case of the conifold theory.

Rotating Black Hole Entropy from M5-branes

We compute the superconformal index of 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal theories obtained from $N$ M5-branes wrapped on a hyperbolic 3-manifold. Exploiting the 3d-3d correspondence, we use perturbative invariants of $SL(N,\mathbb{C})$ Chern-Simons theory to determine the superconformal index in the large $N$ limit, including corrections logarithmic in $N$. The leading order partition function provides a microscopic foundation for the entropy function of the dual rotating asymptotically AdS$_4$ black holes. We also verify that the supergravity one-loop contribution to the $\log N$ term coincides with the field theoretic result. We propose a 3d-3d formulation for the refined topologically twisted index, and provide strong evidence in support of its vanishing --- which agrees with the fact that the expected dual rotating magnetically-charged black hole does not exist. This provides an interesting link between gravity and a tantalizing mathematical result.

Universal Logarithmic Behavior in Microstate Counting and the Dual One-loop Entropy of AdS$_4$ Black Holes

We numerically study the topologically twisted index of several three-dimensional supersymmetric field theories on a genus $g$ Riemann surface times a circle, $Σ_g\times S^1$. We show that for a large class of theories with leading term of the order $N^{3/2}$, where $N$ is generically the rank of the gauge group, there is a universal logarithmic correction of the form $\frac{g-1}{2} \log N$. We explain how this logarithmic subleading correction can be obtained as a one-loop effect on the dual supergravity theory for magnetically charged, asymptotically AdS$_4\times M^7$ black holes for a large class of Sasaki-Einstein manifolds, $M^7$. The matching of the logarithmic correction relies on a generic cohomological property of $M^7$ and it is independent of the black hole charges. We argue that our supergravity results apply also to rotating, electrically charged asymptotically AdS$_4\times M^7$ black holes. We present explicitly the quiver gauge theories and the gravity side corresponding to $M^7=N^{0,1,0}, V^{5,2}$ and $Q^{1,1,1}$.

Aspects of AdS$_2$ classification in M-theory: Solutions with mesonic and baryonic charges

We construct necessary and sufficient geometric conditions for a class of AdS$_2$ solutions of M-theory with, at least, minimal supersymmetry to exist. We generalize previous results in the literature for ${\cal N}=(2,0)$ supersymmetry in AdS$_2$ to ${\cal N}=(1,0)$. When the solution can be locally described as AdS$_2\times Σ_g \times \,$SE$_7$ with $Σ_g$ a Riemann surface of genus $g$ and SE$_7$ a seven-dimensional Sasaki-Einstein manifold, we clarify and unify various solutions present in the literature. In the case of SE$_7=Q^{1,1,1}$ we find a new solution with baryonic and mesonic charges turned on simultaneously.

One-loop Holography with Strings in $AdS_4\times\mathbb {CP}^3$

We compute the one-loop effective action of string configurations embedded in $AdS_4\times\mathbb{CP}^3$ which are dual to $\frac{1}{6}$-BPS latitude Wilson Loops in the ABJM theory. To avoid ambiguities in the string path integral we subtract the $\frac{1}{2}$-BPS case. The one-loop determinants are computed by Fourier-decomposing the two dimensional operators and then using the Gel'fand-Yaglom method. We comment on various aspects related to the regularization procedure, showing the cancellation of a hierarchy of divergences. After taking into account an IR anomaly from a change in topology, we find a precise agreement with the field theory result known from supersymmetric localization.

Precision Microstate Counting for the Entropy of Wrapped M5-branes

We study the large $N$ expansion of twisted partition functions of 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories arising from $N$ M5-branes wrapped on a hyperbolic 3-manifold, $M_3$. Via the 3d-3d correspondence, the partition functions of these 3d ${\cal N}=2$ superconformal field theories are related to simple topological invariants on the 3-manifold. The partition functions can be expressed using only classical and one-loop perturbative invariants of $PSL(N,\mathbb{C})$ Chern-Simons theory around irreducible flat connections on $M_3$. Using mathematical results on the asymptotics of the invariants, we compute the twisted partition functions in the large $N$ limit including perturbative corrections to all orders in $1/N$. Surprisingly, the perturbative expansion terminates at finite order. The leading part of the partition function is of order $N^3$ and agrees with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the dual black holes. The subleading part, in particular the $\log N$-terms in the field theory partition function is found to precisely match the one-loop quantum corrections in the dual eleven dimensional supergravity. The field theory results of other terms in $1/N$ provide a stringent prediction for higher order corrections in the holographic dual, which is M-theory.

Dualities in 3D Large $N$ Vector Models

Using an explicit path integral approach we derive non-abelian bosonization and duality of 3D systems in the large $N$ limit. We first consider a fermionic $U(N)$ vector model coupled to level $k$ Chern-Simons theory, following standard techniques we gauge the original global symmetry and impose the corresponding field strength $F_{μν}$ to vanish introducing a Lagrange multiplier $Λ$. Exchanging the order of integrations we obtain the bosonized theory with $Λ$ as the propagating field using the large $N$ rather than the previously used large mass limit. Next we follow the same procedure to dualize the scalar $U(N)$ vector model coupled to Chern-Simons and find its corresponding dual theory. Finally, we compare the partition functions of the two resulting theories and find that they agree in the large $N$ limit including a level/rank duality. This provides a constructive evidence for previous proposals on level/rank duality of 3D vector models in the large $N$ limit. We also present a partial analysis at subleading order in large $N$ and find that the duality does not generically hold at this level.

Higher Rank ABJM Wilson Loops from Matrix Models

We compute the vacuum expectation values of $1/6$ supersymmetric Wilson loops in higher dimensional representations of the gauge group in ABJM theory. We present results for the $m$-symmetric and $m$-antisymmetric representations by exploiting standard matrix model techniques. At leading order, in the saddle point approximation, our expressions reproduce holographic results from both D6 and D2 branes corresponding to the antisymmetric and symmetric representations, respectively. We also compute 1/N corrections to the leading saddle point results.

Left-Right Entanglement Entropy of Dp-branes

We compute the left-right entanglement entropy for Dp-branes in string theory. We employ the CFT approach to string theory Dp-branes, in particular, its presentation as coherent states of the closed string sector. The entanglement entropy is computed as the von Neumann entropy for a density matrix resulting from integration over the left-moving degrees of freedom. We discuss various crucial ambiguities related to sums over spin structures and argue that different choices capture different physics; however, we advance a themodynamic argument that seems to favor a particular choice of replica. We also consider Dp branes on compact dimensions and verify that the effects of T-duality act covariantly on the Dp brane entanglement entropy. We find that generically the left-right entanglement entropy provides a suitable generalization of boundary entropy and of the D-brane tension.

Spectra of Certain Holographic ABJM Wilson Loops in Higher Rank Representations

The holographic configurations dual to Wilson loops in higher rank representations in the ABJM theory are described by branes with electric flux along their world volumes. In particular, D2 and D6 branes with electric flux play a central role as potential dual to totally symmetric and totally antisymmetric representations, respectively. We compute the spectra of excitations of these brane configurations in both, the bosonic and fermionic sectors. We highlight a number of aspects that distinguish these configurations from their D3 and D5 cousins including new peculiar mixing terms in the fluctuations. We neatly organize the spectrum of fluctuations into the corresponding supermultiplets.

Supergravity Solutions with $AdS_4$ from Non-Abelian T-Dualities

We present a large class of new backgrounds that are solutions of type II supergravity with a warped AdS${}_4$ factor, non-trivial axion-dilaton, B-field, and three- and five-form Ramond-Ramond fluxes. We obtain these solutions by applying non-Abelian T-dualities with respect to SU(2) or SU(2)/U(1) isometries to reductions to 10d IIA of 11d sugra solutions of the form AdS${}_4 \times Y^7$, with $Y^7 = S^7/\mathbb{Z}_k, S^7, M^{1,1,1}, Q^{1,1,1}$ and $N(1,1)$. The main class of reductions to IIA is along the Hopf fiber and leads to solutions of the form $AdS_4 \times K_6$, where $K_6 $ is Kähler Einstein with $K_6=\mathbb{CP}^3, S^2\times \mathbb{CP}^2, S^2\times S^2 \times S^2$; the first member of this class is dual to the ABJM field theory in the 't Hooft limit. We also consider other less symmetric but susy preserving reductions along circles that are not the Hopf fiber. In the case of $N(1,1)$ we find an additional breaking of isometries in the NAT-dual background. To initiate the study of some properties of the field theory dual, we explicitly compute the central charge holographically.

The Holographic Disorder-Driven Superconductor-Metal Transition

We implement the effects of disorder on a holographic superconductor by introducing a random chemical potential on the boundary. We demonstrate explicitly that increasing disorder leads to the formation of islands where the superconducting order is enhanced and subsequently to the transition to a metal. We study the behavior of the superfluid density and of the conductivity as a function of the strength of disorder. We find explanations for various marked features in the conductivities in terms of hydrodynamic quasi-normal modes of the holographic superconductors. These identifications plus a particular disorder-dependent spectral weight shift in the conductivity point to a signature of the Higgs mode in the context of disordered holographic superconductors. We observe that the behavior of the order parameter close to the transition is not mean-field type as in the clean case, rather we find robust agreement with $\exp(- A\, |T-T_c|^{-ν})$, with $ν=1.03\pm 0.02 $ for this disorder-driven smeared transition.

Toward precision holography with supersymmetric Wilson loops

We consider certain 1/4 BPS Wilson loop operators in SU(N) ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, whose expectation value can be computed exactly via supersymmetric localization. Holographically, these operators are mapped to fundamental strings in AdS5 x S5. The string on-shell action reproduces the large N and large coupling limit of the gauge theory expectation value and, according to the AdS/CFT correspondence, there should also be a precise match between subleading corrections to these limits. We perform a test of such match at next-to-leading order in string theory, by deriving the spectrum of quantum fluctuations around the classical string solution and by computing the corresponding 1-loop effective action. We discuss in detail the supermultiplet structure of the fluctuations. To remove a possible source of ambiguity in the ghost zero mode measure, we compare the 1/4 BPS configuration with the 1/2 BPS one, dual to a circular Wilson loop. We find a discrepancy between the string theory result and the gauge theory prediction, confirming a previous result in the literature. We are able to track the modes from which this discrepancy originates, as well as the modes that by themselves would give the expected result.

Holographic p-wave Superconductor with Disorder

We implement the effects of disorder on a holographic p-wave superconductor by introducing a random chemical potential which defines the local energy of the charge carriers. Since there are various possibilities for the orientation of the vector order parameter, we explore the behavior of the condensate in the parallel and perpendicular directions to the introduced disorder. We clarify the nature of various branches representing competing solutions and construct the disordered phase diagram. We find that moderate disorder enhances superconductivity as determined by the value of the condensate. Though we mostly focus on uncorrelated noise, we also consider a disorder characterized by its spectral properties and study in detail its influence on the spectral properties of the condensate and charge density. We find fairly universal responses of the resulting power spectra characterized by linear functions of the disorder power spectrum.

On N=1 partition functions without R-symmetry

We examine the dependence of four-dimensional Euclidean $\mathcal{N}=1$ partition functions on coupling constants. In particular, we focus on backgrounds without R-symmetry, which arise in the rigid limit of old minimal supergravity. Backgrounds preserving a single supercharge may be classified as having either trivial or SU(2) structure, with the former including $S^{4}$. We show that, in the absence of additional symmetries, the partition function depends non-trivially on all couplings in the trivial structure case, and (anti)-holomorphically on couplings in the SU(2) structure case. In both cases, this allows for ambiguities in the form of finite counterterms, which in principle render the partition function unphysical. However, we argue that on dimensional grounds, ambiguities are restricted to finite powers in relevant couplings, and can therefore be kept under control. On the other hand, for backgrounds preserving supercharges of opposite chiralities, the partition function is completely independent of all couplings. In this case, the background admits an R-symmetry, and the partition function is physical, in agreement with the results obtained in the rigid limit of new minimal supergravity. Based on a systematic analysis of supersymmetric invariants, we also demonstrate that $\mathcal{N}=1$ localization is not possible for backgrounds without R-symmetry.

One-loop Structure of Higher Rank Wilson Loops in AdS/CFT

The half-supersymmetric Wilson loop in $\mathcal N=4$ SYM is arguably the central non-local operator in the AdS/CFT correspondence. On the field theory side, the vacuum expectation values of Wilson loops in arbitrary representations of $SU(N)$ are captured to all orders in perturbation theory by a Gaussian matrix model. Of prominent interest are the $k$-symmetric and $k$-antisymmetric representations, whose gravitational description is given in terms of D3- and D5-branes, respectively, with fluxes in their world volumes. At leading order in $N$ and $λ$ the agreement in both cases is exact. In this note we explore the structure of the next-to-leading order correction in the matrix model and compare with existing string theory calculations. We find agreement in the functional dependence on $k$ but a mismatch in the numerical coefficients.

A Dirty Holographic Superconductor

We study the effects of disorder on a holographic superconductor by introducing a random chemical potential on the boundary. We consider various realizations of disorder and find that the critical temperature for superconductivity is enhanced. We also present evidence for a precise form of renormalization in this system. Namely, when the random chemical potential is characterized by a Fourier spectrum of the form $k^{-2α}$ we find that the spectra of the condensate and the charge density are again power-laws, whose exponents are accurately and universally governed by linear functions of $α$.

A Quantum Rosetta Stone for the Information Paradox

The black hole information loss paradox epitomizes the contradictions between general relativity and quantum field theory. The AdS/CFT correspondence provides an implicit answer for the information loss paradox in black hole physics by equating a gravity theory with an explicitly unitary field theory. Gravitational collapse in asymptotically AdS spacetimes is generically turbulent. Given that the mechanism to read out the information about correlations functions in the field theory side is plagued by deterministic classical chaos, we argue that quantum chaos might provide the true Rosetta Stone for answering the information paradox in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence.

Gravitational Collapse, Chaos in CFT Correlators and the Information Paradox

We consider gravitational collapse of a massless scalar field in asymptotically Anti de Sitter spacetime. Following the AdS/CFT dictionary we further study correlations in the field theory side by way of the Klein-Gordon equation of a probe scalar field in the collapsing background. We present evidence that in a certain regime the probe scalar field behaves chaotically, thus supporting Hawking's argument in the black hole information paradox proposing that although the information can be retrieved in principle, deterministic chaos impairs, in practice, the process of unitary extraction of information from a black hole. We emphasize that quantum chaos will change this picture.

Left-Right Entanglement Entropy of Boundary States

We study entanglement entropy of boundary states in a free bosonic conformal field theory. A boundary state can be thought of as composed of a particular combination of left and right-moving modes of the two-dimensional conformal field theory. We investigate the reduced density matrix obtained by tracing over the right-moving modes in various boundary states. We consider Dirichlet and Neumann boundary states of a free noncompact as well as a compact boson. The results for the entanglement entropy indicate that the reduced system can be viewed as a thermal CFT gas. Our findings are in agreement and generalize results in quantum mechanics and quantum field theory where coherent states can also be considered. In the compact case we verify that the entanglement entropy expressions are consistent with T-duality.

On Exactly Marginal Deformations Dual to $B$-Field Moduli of IIB Theory on SE$_5$

The complex dimension of the space of exactly marginal deformations for quiver CFTs dual to IIB theory compactified on $Y^{p,q}$ is known to be generically three. Simple general formulas already exist for two of the exactly marginal directions in the space of couplings, one of which corresponds to the sum of the (inverse squared of) gauge couplings, and the other to the $β$-deformation. Here we identify the third exactly marginal direction, which is dual to the modulus $\int B_{2}$ on the gravity side. This identification leads to a relation between the field theory gauge couplings and the vacuum expectation value of the gravity modulus that we further support by a computation related to the chiral anomaly induced by added fractional branes. We also present a simple algorithm for finding similar exactly marginal directions in any CFT described by brane tiling, and demonstrate it for the quiver CFTs dual to IIB theory compactified on $L^{1,5,2}$ and the Suspended Pinch Point.

Small Treatise on Spin-3/2 Fields and their Dual Spectral Functions

In this work we systematically study various aspects of spin-3/2 fields in a curved background. We mostly focus on a minimally coupled massive spin-3/2 field in arbitrary dimensions, and solve the equation of motion either explicitly or numerically in AdS, Schwarzschild-AdS and Reissner-Nordström-AdS backgrounds. Although not the main focus of this work, we also make a connection with the gravitino equation of motion in gauged supergravity. Motivated by the AdS/CFT correspondence, we emphasize calculational improvements and technical details of the dual spectral functions. We attempt to provide a coherent and comprehensive picture of the existing literature.

Type IIB Supergravity Solutions with AdS${}_5$ From Abelian and Non-Abelian T Dualities

We present a large class of new backgrounds that are solutions of type IIB supergravity with a warped AdS${}_5$ factor, non-trivial axion-dilaton, $B$-field and three-form Ramond-Ramond flux but yet have no five-form flux. We obtain these solutions and many of their variations by judiciously applying non-Abelian and Abelian T-dualities, as well as coordinate shifts to AdS${}_5\times X_5$ IIB supergravity solutions with $X_5=S^5, T^{1,1}, Y^{p,q}$. We address a number of issues pertaining to charge quantization in the context of non-Abelian T-duality. We comment on some properties of the expected dual super conformal field theories by studying their CFT central charge holographically. We also use the structure of the supergravity Page charges, central charges and some probe branes to infer aspects of the dual super conformal field theories.

A Kolmogorov-Zakharov Spectrum in $AdS$ Gravitational Collapse

We study black hole formation during the gravitational collapse of a massless scalar field in asymptotically $AdS_D$ spacetimes for $D=4,5$. We conclude that spherically symmetric gravitational collapse in asymptotically $AdS$ spaces is turbulent and characterized by a Kolmogorov-Zakharov spectrum. Namely, we find that after an initial period of weakly nonlinear evolution, there is a regime where the power spectrum of the Ricci scalar evolves as $ω^{-s}$ with the frequency, $ω$, and $s\approx 1.7\pm 0.1$.

A String Theory Explanation for Quantum Chaos in the Hadronic Spectrum

In the 1950's Wigner and collaborators provided an explanation for the spectrum of hadronic excitations in terms of Random Matrix Theory. In the 1980's it was understood that some hadronic spectral properties were generic to systems whose classical limit is chaotic. We use string theory to demonstrate explicitly how, under very general conditions, recent holographic models of strong interactions have a spectrum compatible with Wigner's conjecture.

Entanglement Temperature and Entanglement Entropy of Excited States

We derive a general relation between the ground state entanglement Hamiltonian and the physical stress tensor within the path integral formalism. For spherical entangling surfaces in a CFT, we reproduce the \emph{local} ground state entanglement Hamiltonian derived by Casini, Huerta and Myers. The resulting reduced density matrix can be characterized by a spatially varying "entanglement temperature." Using the entanglement Hamiltonian, we calculate the first order change in the entanglement entropy due to changes in conserved charges of the ground state, and find a local first law-like relation for the entanglement entropy. Our approach provides a field theory derivation and generalization of recent results obtained by holographic techniques. However, we note a discrepancy between our field theoretically derived results for the entanglement entropy of excited states with a non-uniform energy density and current holographic results in the literature. Finally, we give a CFT derivation of a set of constraint equations obeyed by the entanglement entropy of excited states in any dimension. Previously, these equations were derived in the context of holography.

On Marginal Deformations and Non-Integrability

We study the interplay between a particular marginal deformation of ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory, the $β$ deformation, and integrability in the holographic setting. Using modern methods of analytic non-integrability of Hamiltonian systems, we find that, when the $β$ parameter takes imaginary values, classical string trajectories on the dual background become non-integrable. We expect the same to be true for generic complex $β$ parameter. By exhibiting the Poincaré sections and phase space trajectories for the generic complex $β$ case, we provide numerical evidence of strong sensitivity to initial conditions. Our findings agree with expectations from weak coupling that the complex $β$ deformation is non-integrable and provide a rigorous argument beyond the trial and error approach to non-integrability.

On Resolutions of Cosmological Singularities in Higher-Spin Gravity

We study the resolution of certain cosmological singularity in the context of higher-spin three-dimensional gravity. We consider gravity coupled to a spin-3 field realized as Chern-Simons theory with gauge group $SL(3,\mathbb{C})$. In this context we elaborate and extend a singularity resolution scheme proposed by Krishnan and Roy. We discuss the resolution of a big-bang singularity in the case of gravity coupled to a spin-4 field realized as Chern-Simons theory with gauge group $SL(4,\mathbb{C})$. In all these cases we show the existence of gauge transformations that do not change the holonomy of the Chern-Simons gauge potential and lead to metrics without the initial singularity. We argue that such transformations always exist in the context of gravity coupled to a spin-N field when described by Chern-Simons with gauge group $SL(N,\mathbb{C})$.

Chaos around Holographic Regge Trajectories

Using methods of Hamiltonian dynamical systems, we show analytically that a dynamical system connected to the classical spinning string solution holographically dual to the principal Regge trajectory is non-integrable. The Regge trajectories themselves form an integrable island in the total phase space of the dynamical system. Our argument applies to any gravity background dual to confining field theories and we verify it explicitly in various supergravity backgrounds: Klebanov-Strassler, Maldacena-Nunez, Witten QCD and the AdS soliton. Having established non-integrability for this general class of supergravity backgrounds, we show explicitly by direct computation of the Poincare sections and the largest Lyapunov exponent, that such strings have chaotic motion.

After demonstrating the accuracy of the numerical algorithm for the questions we are interested in, we investigate various aspects of the apparent horizon formation. In particular, we study the time and radius of the apparent horizon formed as functions of the initial Gaussian profile for the scalar field. Rapid Thermalization in Field Theory from Gravitational Collapse

Motivated by the duality with thermalization in field theory, we study gravitational collapse of a minimally coupled massless scalar field in Einstein gravity with a negative cosmological constant. We investigate the system numerically and establish that for small values of the initial amplitude of the scalar field there is no black hole formation, rather, the scalar field performs an oscillatory motion typical of geodesics in AdS. For large enough values of the amplitude of the scalar field we find black hole formation which we detect numerically as the emergence of an apparent horizon. Using the time of formation as an estimate for thermalization in the field theory we conclude that thermalization occurs very rapidly, close to the causal bound for a very wide range of black hole masses. We further study the thermalization time in more detail as a function of the amplitude and the width of the initial Gaussian scalar field profile and detect a rather mild structure.

Rigid Supersymmetric Backgrounds of Minimal Off-Shell Supergravity

In particular, we construct all rigid supersymmetry backgrounds with a hypersurface orthogonal Killing vector. In the Lorentzian signature we show that AdS_4 provides a rigid supersymmetric background in both formulations albeit with different amounts of preserved supersymmetry. In the Euclidean signature we find new backgrounds of the old-minimal supergravity, including squashed four-spheres and a half-BPS version of flat space.

Heating up the Baryonic Branch with U-duality: a unified picture of conifold black holes

We study different aspects of a U-duality recently presented by Maldacena and Martelli and apply it to non-extremal backgrounds. In particular, starting from new non-extremal wrapped D5 branes we generate new non-extremal generalizations of the Baryonic Branch of the Klebanov-Strassler solution. We also elaborate on different conceptual aspects of these U-dualities, like its action on (extremal and non-extremal) Dp branes, dual models for Yang-Mills-like theories, generic asymptotics and decoupling limit of the generated solutions.

One-loop Effective Action of the Holographic Antisymmetric Wilson Loop

We systematically study the spectrum of excitations and the one-loop determinant of holographic Wilson loop operators in antisymmetric representations of $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. Holographically, these operators are described by D5-branes carrying electric flux and wrapping an $S^4 \subset S^5$ in the $AdS_5\times S^5$ bulk background. We derive the dynamics of both bosonic and fermionic excitations for such D5-branes. A particularly important configuration in this class is the D5-brane with $AdS_2\times S^4$ worldvolume and $k$ units of electric flux, which is dual to the circular Wilson loop in the totally antisymmetric representation of rank $k$. For this Wilson loop, we obtain the spectrum, show explicitly that it is supersymmetric and calculate the one-loop effective action using heat kernel techniques.

The Spectrum of Excitations of Holographic Wilson Loops

In the holographic framework, a half BPS Wilson loop in ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills in the fundamental, symmetric or antisymmetric representation of SU(N), is best described by a fundamental string, a D3 brane or a D5 brane with fluxes in their worldvolumes, respectively. We derive the spectrum of excitations of such D3 brane in $AdS_5\times S^5$ explicitly, considering its action in both the bosonic and the fermionic sectors, and demonstrate that it is organized according to short multiplets of the supergroup $OSp(4^*|4)$. We also show that the modes of the fundamental string form an ultra-short multiplet of this supergroup. In the case of the D5 brane the bosonic spectrum is only partially known but we argue that it also fills representations of $OSp(4^*|4)$. This way we provide a step towards a unifying picture for the description of holographic excitations of the circular and straight supersymmetric Wilson loops in arbitrary representations.

Toward NS5 Branes on the Resolved Cone over Y^{p,q}

Motivated by recent developments in the understanding of the connection between five branes on resolved geometries and the corresponding generalizations of complex deformations in the context of the warped resolved deformed conifold, we consider the construction of five branes solutions on the resolved cone over Y^{p,q} spaces. We establish the existence of supersymmetric five branes solutions wrapped on two-cycles of the resolved cone over Y^{p,q} in the probe limit. We then use calibration techniques to begin the construction of fully back-reacted five branes; we present an Ansatz and the corresponding equations of motion. Our results establish a detailed framework to study back-reacted five branes wrapped on the resolved cone over Y^{p,q} and as a first step we find explicit solutions and construct an asymptotic expansion with the expected properties.

Aging and Holography

Aging phenomena are examples of `non-equilibrium criticality' and can be exemplified by systems with Galilean and scaling symmetries but no time translation invariance. We realize aging holographically using a deformation of a non-relativistic version of gauge/gravity duality. Correlation functions of scalar operators are computed using holographic real-time techniques, and agree with field theory expectations. At least in this setup, general aging phenomena are reproduced holographically by complexifying the bulk space-time geometry, even in Lorentzian signature.

Chaos in the Gauge/Gravity Correspondence

We study the motion of a string in the background of the Schwarzschild black hole in AdS_5 by applying the standard arsenal of dynamical systems. Our description of the phase space includes: the power spectrum, the largest Lyapunov exponent, Poincare sections and basins of attractions. We find convincing evidence that the motion is chaotic. We discuss the implications of some of the quantities associated with chaotic systems for aspects of the gauge/gravity correspondence. In particular, we suggest some potential relevance for the information loss paradox.

Fermions and D=11 Supergravity On Squashed Sasaki-Einstein Manifolds

We discuss the dimensional reduction of fermionic modes in a recently found class of consistent truncations of D=11 supergravity compactified on squashed seven-dimensional Sasaki-Einstein manifolds. Such reductions are of interest, for example, in that they have $(2+1)$-dimensional holographic duals, and the fermionic content and their interactions with charged scalars are an important aspect of their applications. We derive the lower-dimensional equations of motion for the fermions and exhibit their couplings to the various bosonic modes present in the truncations under consideration, which most notably include charged scalar and form fields. We demonstrate that our results are consistent with the expected supersymmetric structure of the lower dimensional theory, and apply them to a specific example which is relevant to the study of $(2+1)$-dimensional holographic superconductors.

Phase transitions in Wilson loop correlator from integrability in global AdS

We directly compute Wilson loop/Wilson loop correlators on ${\mathbb R}\times $S$^3$ in AdS/CFT by constructing space-like minimal surfaces that connect two space-like circular contours on the boundary of global AdS that are separated by a space-like interval. We compare these minimal surfaces to the disconnected "double cap" solutions both to regulate the area, and show when the connected/disconnected solution is preferred. We find that for sufficiently large Wilson loops no transition occurs because the Wilson loops cannot be sufficiently separated on the sphere. This may be considered an effect similar to the Hawking-Page transition: the size of the sphere introduces a new scale into the problem, and so one can expect phase transitions to depend on this data. To construct the minimal area solutions, we employ a reduction a la Arutyunov-Russo-Tseytlin (used by them for spinning strings), and rely on the integrability of the reduced set of equations to write explicit results.

Holographic Geometric Entropy at Finite Temperature from Black Holes in Global Anti de Sitter Spaces

Using a holographic proposal for the geometric entropy we study its behavior in the geometry of Schwarzschild black holes in global $AdS_p$ for $p=3,4,5$. Holographically, the entropy is determined by a minimal surface. On the gravity side, due to the presence of a horizon on the background, generically there are two solutions to the surfaces determining the entanglement entropy. In the case of $AdS_3$, the calculation reproduces precisely the geometric entropy of an interval of length $l$ in a two dimensional conformal field theory with periodic boundary conditions. We demonstrate that in the cases of $AdS_{4}$ and $AdS_{5}$ the sign of the difference of the geometric entropies changes, signaling a transition. Euclideanization implies that various embedding of the holographic surface are possible. We study some of them and find that the transitions are ubiquitous. In particular, our analysis renders a very intricate phase space, showing, for some ranges of the temperature, up to three branches. We observe a remarkable universality in the type of results we obtain from $AdS_4$ and $AdS_5$.

Condensing Momentum Modes in 2-d 0A String Theory with Flux

We use a combination of conformal perturbation theory techniques and matrix model results to study the effects of perturbing by momentum modes two dimensional type 0A strings with non-vanishing Ramond-Ramond (RR) flux. In the limit of large RR flux (equivalently, mu=0) we find an explicit analytic form of the genus zero partition function in terms of the RR flux $q$ and the momentum modes coupling constant alpha. The analyticity of the partition function enables us to go beyond the perturbative regime and, for alpha>> q, obtain the partition function in a background corresponding to the momentum modes condensation. For momenta such that 0<p<2 we find no obstruction to condensing the momentum modes in the phase diagram of the partition function.

Regge Trajectories Revisited in the Gauge/String Correspondence

We attempt to obtain realistic glueball Regge trajectories from the gauge/string correspondence. To this end we study closed spinning string configurations in two supergravity backgrounds: Klebanov-Strassler (KS) and Maldacena-Nunez (MN) which are dual to confining gauge theories. These backgrounds represent two embeddings of N=1 SYM, in the large rank limit, in string theory. The classical configuration we consider is that of a folded closed string spinning in a supergravity region with vanishing transverse radius (τ= 0) which is dual to the IR of the gauge theory. Classically, a spinning string yields a linear Regge trajectory with zero intercept. By performing a semi-classical analysis we find that quantum effects alter both the linearity of the trajectory and the vanishing classical intercept: J:=α(t)= α_0 + α' t +β\sqrt{t}. Two features of our Regge trajectories are compatible with the experimental Pomeron trajectory: positive intercept and positive curvature. The fact that both KS and MN string backgrounds give the same functional expression of the Regge trajectories suggests that in fact we are observing string states dual to N=1 SYM.

Statistical Entropy of Calabi-Yau Black Holes

We computed the statistical entropy of nonextremal 4D and extremal 5D Calabi-Yau black holes and found exact agreement with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. The computation is based on the fact that the near-horizon geometry of equivalent representations contains as a factor the Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli black hole and on subsequent use of Strominger's proposal generalizing the statistical count of microstates of the BTZ black hole due to Carlip.
