Four-derivative Corrections to Minimal Gauged Supergravity in Five Dimensions

We study four-derivative corrections to pure $\mathcal{N}=2$, $D=5$ gauged supergravity. In particular, we find that, up to field redefinitions, there is a single four-derivative superinvariant that one can add to the action, up to factors of the two-derivative action. Consequently, this selects out a unique set of coefficients for the four-derivative corrections. We confirm these coefficients (in the ungauged limit) on the BMPV solution.

Type IIB at eight derivatives: insights from Superstrings, Superfields and Superparticles

We study the non-linear structure of Type IIB eight-derivative couplings involving the metric and the complexified three-form $G_3$. We show that, at the level of five-point string amplitudes, the kinematics in the maximally R-symmetry-violating sector is fully matched by standard superspace integrals and by superparticle amplitudes in M-theory on a two-torus. The latter approach is used to determine the complete effective action in this sector and to verify its invariance under SL$(2,\mathbb{Z})$ duality. We further comment on the general structure of the higher-point kinematics. Compactifications to lower dimensions provide both tests for our results and the arena for their applications. We verify that K3 reductions are fully consistent with the constraints of six-dimensional supersymmetry, and derive the four-dimensional flux scalar potential and axion kinetic terms at order $(α^{\prime})^{3}$ in Calabi-Yau threefold reductions.

Asymptotic growth of the 4d $\mathcal N=4$ index and partially deconfined phases

We study the Cardy-like asymptotics of the 4d $\mathcal N=4$ index and demonstrate the existence of partially deconfined phases where the asymptotic growth of the index is not as rapid as in the fully deconfined case. We then take the large-$N$ limit after the Cardy-like limit and make a conjecture for the leading asymptotics of the index. While the Cardy-like behavior is derived using the integral representation of the index, we demonstrate how the same results can be obtained using the Bethe ansatz type approach as well. In doing so, we discover new non-standard solutions to the elliptic Bethe ansatz equations including continuous families of solutions for $SU(N)$ theory with $N\ge3$. We argue that the existence of both standard and continuous non-standard solutions has a natural interpretation in terms of vacua of $\mathcal N=1^*$ theory on $\mathbb R^3\times S^1$.

Repulsive Black Holes and Higher-Derivatives

In two-derivative theories of gravity coupled to matter, charged black holes are self-attractive at large distances, with the force vanishing at zero temperature. However, in the presence of massless scalar fields and four-derivative corrections, zero-temperature black holes no longer need to obey the no-force condition. In this paper, we show how to calculate the long-range force between such black holes. We develop an efficient method for computing the higher-derivative corrections to the scalar charges when the two-derivative theory has a shift symmetry, and compute the resulting force in a variety of examples. We find that higher-derivative corrected black holes may be self-attractive or self-repulsive, depending on the value of the Wilson coefficients and the VEVs of scalar moduli. Indeed, we find black hole solutions which are both superextremal and self-attractive. Furthermore, we present examples where no choice of higher-derivative coefficients allows for self-repulsive black hole states in all directions in charge space. This suggests that, unlike the Weak Gravity Conjecture, which may be satisfied by the black hole spectrum alone, the Repulsive Force Conjecture requires additional constraints on the spectrum of charged particles.

Sub-leading Structures in Superconformal Indices: Subdominant Saddles and Logarithmic Contributions

We systematically study various sub-leading structures in the superconformal index of ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with SU($N$) gauge group. We concentrate in the superconformal index description as a matrix model of elliptic gamma functions and in the Bethe-Ansatz presentation. Our saddle-point approximation goes beyond the Cardy-like limit and we uncover various saddles governed by a matrix model corresponding to SU($N$) Chern-Simons theory. The dominant saddle, however, leads to perfect agreement with the Bethe-Ansatz approach. We also determine the logarithmic correction to the superconformal index to be $\log N$, finding precise agreement between the saddle-point and Bethe-Ansatz approaches in their respective approximations. We generalize the two approaches to cover a large class of 4d ${\cal N}=1$ superconformal theories. We find that also in this case both approximations agree all the way down to a universal contribution of the form $\log N$. The universality of this last result constitutes a robust signature of this ultraviolet description of asymptotically AdS$_5$ black holes and could be tested by low-energy IIB supergravity.

Higher-Derivative Corrections to Entropy and the Weak Gravity Conjecture in Anti-de Sitter Space

We compute the four-derivative corrections to the geometry, extremality bound, and thermodynamic quantities of AdS-Reissner-Nordstr{ö}m black holes for general dimensions and horizon geometries. We confirm the universal relationship between the extremality shift at fixed charge and the shift of the microcanonical entropy, and discuss the consequences of this relation for the Weak Gravity Conjecture in AdS. The thermodynamic corrections are calculated using two different methods: first by explicitly solving the higher-derivative equations of motion and second, by evaluating the higher-derivative Euclidean on-shell action on the leading-order solution. In both cases we find agreement, up to the addition of a Casimir energy in odd dimensions. We derive the bounds on the four-derivative Wilson coefficients implied by the conjectured positivity of the leading corrections to the microcanonical entropy of thermodynamically stable black holes. These include the requirement that the coefficient of Riemann-squared is positive, meaning that the positivity of the entropy shift is related to the condition that $c - a$ is positive in the dual CFT. We discuss implications for the deviation of $η/s$ from its universal value and a potential lower bound.

Gauged Supergravity from the Lunin-Maldacena background

We show how to expand the Lunin-Maldacena solution to the full bosonic sector of gauged $\mathcal N=2$ supergravity. In particular, we construct a consistent truncation of IIB supergravity on a $β$-deformed $\mathrm{AdS}_5\times S^5$ background retaining a dynamical metric and graviphoton in five dimensions. We comment on the relation between this solution and similar constructions on Sasaki-Einstein manifolds, as well as the possibility of further consistent truncations which generalize the Lunin-Maldacena solution.

The Scales of Black Holes with nAdS$_2$ Geometry

We study nearly extreme black holes with nearly AdS$_2$ horizon geometry in various settings inspired by string theory. Our focus is on the scales of the nAdS$_2$ region and their relation to microscopic theory. These scales are determined by a generalization of the attractor mechanism for extremal black holes and realized geometrically as the normal derivatives along the extremal attractor flow. In some cases the scales are equivalently determined by the charge dependence of the extremal attractor by itself. Our examples include near extreme black holes in $D\geq 4$ dimensions, AdS boundary conditions, rotation, and 5D black holes on the non-BPS branch.

Higher Rank ABJM Wilson Loops from Matrix Models

We compute the vacuum expectation values of $1/6$ supersymmetric Wilson loops in higher dimensional representations of the gauge group in ABJM theory. We present results for the $m$-symmetric and $m$-antisymmetric representations by exploiting standard matrix model techniques. At leading order, in the saddle point approximation, our expressions reproduce holographic results from both D6 and D2 branes corresponding to the antisymmetric and symmetric representations, respectively. We also compute 1/N corrections to the leading saddle point results.

Holographic Lifshitz fermions and exponentially suppressed spectral weight

The absence of fixed momentum excitations in a theory with Lifshitz scale invariance gives rise to exponential suppression of spectral weight in the low-frequency limit. In the holographic dual, this suppression arises as a consequence of a tunneling barrier that decouples the horizon from the boundary. We compute the spin-1/2 holographic Green's function and show that the form of the barrier is identical to that of the scalar case. We furthermore demonstrate that the suppression factor is universal in the $\hatω\to0$ limit where $\hatω=ω/|\vec k|^z$. In particular, it depends only on $\hatω$ and the critical exponent $z$, and is independent of scaling dimension and spin.

One-loop supergravity on $\mathrm{AdS}_4\times S^7/\mathbb{Z}_k$ and comparison with ABJM theory

The large-$N$ limit of ABJM theory is holographically dual to M-theory on AdS$_4\times S^7/\mathbb{Z}_k$. The 3-sphere partition function has been obtained via localization, and its leading behavior $F_{\text{ABJM}}^{(0)}\sim k^{1/2}N^{3/2}$ is exactly reproduced in the dual theory by tree-level supergravity. We extend this comparison to the sub-leading $\mathcal O(N^0)$ order by computing the one-loop supergravity free energy as a function of $k$ and comparing it with the ABJM result. Curiously, we find that the expressions do not match, with $F_{\text{SUGRA}}^{(1)}\sim k^6$, while $F_{\text{ABJM}}^{(1)}\sim k^2$. This suggests that the low-energy approximation $Z_{\text{M-theory}}=Z_{\text{SUGRA}}$ breaks down at one-loop order.

Rigid Supersymmetric Backgrounds of 3-dimensional Newton-Cartan Supergravity

Recently, a non-relativistic off-shell formulation of three dimensional Newton-Cartan supergravity was proposed as the $c \rightarrow \infty$ limit of three dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravity in arXiv:1505.02095. In the present paper we study supersymmetric backgrounds within this theory. Using integrability constraints for the non-relativistic Killing spinor equations, we explicitly construct all maximally supersymmetric solutions, which admit four supercharges. In addition to these solutions, there are $\frac{1}{2}$-BPS solutions with reduced supersymmetry. We give explicit examples of such backgrounds and derive necessary conditions for backgrounds preserving two supercharges. Finally, we address how supersymmetric backgrounds of $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravity are connected to the solutions found here in the $c \rightarrow \infty$ limit.

Universal features of Lifshitz Green's functions from holography

We examine the behavior of the retarded Green's function in theories with Lifshitz scaling symmetry, both through dual gravitational models and a direct field theory approach. In contrast with the case of a relativistic CFT, where the Green's function is fixed (up to normalization) by symmetry, the generic Lifshitz Green's function can a priori depend on an arbitrary function $\mathcal G(\hatω)$, where $\hatω=ω/|\vec k|^z$ is the scale-invariant ratio of frequency to wavenumber, with dynamical exponent $z$. Nevertheless, we demonstrate that the imaginary part of the retarded Green's function (i.e. the spectral function) of scalar operators is exponentially suppressed in a window of frequencies near zero. This behavior is universal in all Lifshitz theories without additional constraining symmetries. On the gravity side, this result is robust against higher derivative corrections, while on the field theory side we present two $z=2$ examples where the exponential suppression arises from summing the perturbative expansion to infinite order.

$c-a$ from the $N=1$ superconformal index

We present a prescription for obtaining the difference of the central charges, c-a, of a four dimensional superconformal quantum field theory from its single-trace index. The formula is derived from a one-loop holographic computation, but is expected to be valid independent of holography. We demonstrate the prescription with several holographic and non-holographic examples. As an application of our formula, we show the AdS/CFT matching of c-a for arbitrary toric quiver CFTs without adjoint matter that are dual to smooth Sasaki-Einstein 5-manifolds.

A Holographic c-Theorem for Schrodinger Spacetimes

We prove a c-theorem for holographic renormalization group flows in a Schrodinger spacetime that demonstrates that the effective radius L(r) monotonically decreases from the UV to the IR, where r is the bulk radial coordinate. This result assumes that the bulk matter satisfies the null energy condition, but holds regardless of the value of the critical exponent z. We also construct several numerical examples in a model where the Schrodinger background is realized by a massive vector coupled to a real scalar. The full Schrodinger group is realized when z=2, and in this case it is possible to construct solutions with constant effective z(r)=2 along the entire flow.

Central charges from the $\mathcal{N} = 1$ superconformal index

We present prescriptions for obtaining the central charges, $a$ and $c$, of a four dimensional superconformal quantum field theory from the superconformal index. At infinite $N$, for holographic theories dual to Sasaki-Einstein 5-manifolds the prescriptions give the $\mathcal{O}(1)$ parts of the central charges. This allows us, among other things, to show the exact AdS/CFT matching of $a$ and $c$ for arbitrary toric quiver CFTs without adjoint matter that are dual to smooth Sasaki-Einstein 5-manifolds. In addition, we include evidence from non-holographic theories for the applicability of these results outside of a holographic setting and away from the large-$N$ limit.

High-Temperature Expansion of Supersymmetric Partition Functions

Di Pietro and Komargodski have recently demonstrated a four-dimensional counterpart of Cardy's formula, which gives the leading high-temperature ($β\rightarrow{0}$) behavior of supersymmetric partition functions $Z^{SUSY}(β)$. Focusing on superconformal theories, we elaborate on the subleading contributions to their formula when applied to free chiral and U(1) vector multiplets. In particular, we see that the high-temperature expansion of $\ln Z^{SUSY}(β)$ terminates at order $β^0$. We also demonstrate how their formula must be modified when applied to SU($N$) toric quiver gauge theories in the planar ($N\rightarrow\infty$) limit. Our method for regularizing the one-loop determinants of chiral and vector multiplets helps to clarify the relation between the 4d $\mathcal{N} = 1$ superconformal index and its corresponding supersymmetric partition function obtained by path-integration.

On N=1 partition functions without R-symmetry

We examine the dependence of four-dimensional Euclidean $\mathcal{N}=1$ partition functions on coupling constants. In particular, we focus on backgrounds without R-symmetry, which arise in the rigid limit of old minimal supergravity. Backgrounds preserving a single supercharge may be classified as having either trivial or SU(2) structure, with the former including $S^{4}$. We show that, in the absence of additional symmetries, the partition function depends non-trivially on all couplings in the trivial structure case, and (anti)-holomorphically on couplings in the SU(2) structure case. In both cases, this allows for ambiguities in the form of finite counterterms, which in principle render the partition function unphysical. However, we argue that on dimensional grounds, ambiguities are restricted to finite powers in relevant couplings, and can therefore be kept under control. On the other hand, for backgrounds preserving supercharges of opposite chiralities, the partition function is completely independent of all couplings. In this case, the background admits an R-symmetry, and the partition function is physical, in agreement with the results obtained in the rigid limit of new minimal supergravity. Based on a systematic analysis of supersymmetric invariants, we also demonstrate that $\mathcal{N}=1$ localization is not possible for backgrounds without R-symmetry.

One-loop Structure of Higher Rank Wilson Loops in AdS/CFT

The half-supersymmetric Wilson loop in $\mathcal N=4$ SYM is arguably the central non-local operator in the AdS/CFT correspondence. On the field theory side, the vacuum expectation values of Wilson loops in arbitrary representations of $SU(N)$ are captured to all orders in perturbation theory by a Gaussian matrix model. Of prominent interest are the $k$-symmetric and $k$-antisymmetric representations, whose gravitational description is given in terms of D3- and D5-branes, respectively, with fluxes in their world volumes. At leading order in $N$ and $λ$ the agreement in both cases is exact. In this note we explore the structure of the next-to-leading order correction in the matrix model and compare with existing string theory calculations. We find agreement in the functional dependence on $k$ but a mismatch in the numerical coefficients.

Hidden horizons in non-relativistic AdS/CFT

We study boundary Green's functions for spacetimes with non-relativistic scaling symmetry. For this class of backgrounds, scalar modes with large transverse momentum, or equivalently low frequency, have an exponentially suppressed imprint on the boundary. We investigate the effect of these modes on holographic two-point functions. We find that the boundary Green's function is generically insensitive to horizon features on small transverse length scales. We explicitly demonstrate this insensitivity for Lifshitz z=2, and then use the WKB approximation to generalize our findings to Lifshitz z>1 and RG flows with a Lifshitz-like region. We also comment on the analogous situation in Schroedinger spacetimes. Finally, we exhibit the analytic properties of the Green's function in these spacetimes.

Small Treatise on Spin-3/2 Fields and their Dual Spectral Functions

In this work we systematically study various aspects of spin-3/2 fields in a curved background. We mostly focus on a minimally coupled massive spin-3/2 field in arbitrary dimensions, and solve the equation of motion either explicitly or numerically in AdS, Schwarzschild-AdS and Reissner-Nordström-AdS backgrounds. Although not the main focus of this work, we also make a connection with the gravitino equation of motion in gauged supergravity. Motivated by the AdS/CFT correspondence, we emphasize calculational improvements and technical details of the dual spectral functions. We attempt to provide a coherent and comprehensive picture of the existing literature.

The shortened KK spectrum of IIB supergravity on Y^{p,q}

We examine the shortened KK spectrum of IIB supergravity compactified on Y^{p,q} and conjecture that the spectrum we have obtained is complete. The (untwisted) shortened spectrum on S^5/Z_{2p} and T^{1,1}/Z_p are obtained as special cases when p=q and q=0, respectively. Knowledge of the shortened spectrum allows us to compute the superconformal index of these theories and to find agreement with earlier calculations from the dual field theories. We also employ the shortened spectrum to perform a 1/N^2 test of AdS/CFT by holographically reproducing the difference of the central charges, c-a=p/8, of the dual CFTs.

1/N^2 corrections to the holographic Weyl anomaly

We compute the O(1) contribution to holographic c-a for IIB supergravity on AdS_5 x S^5/Z_n and on AdS_5 x T^{1,1}/Z_n. In both cases, we find agreement with the dual field theory results, thus providing 1/N^2 checks of AdS/CFT with reduced supersymmetry. Since the holographic computation involves a sum over shortened multiplets in the KK tower, we provide some details on the S^5 and T^{1,1} spectra in a form that is convenient when considering their Z_n orbifolds. The computation for the even Z_n orbifolds of S^5 includes a sum over the multiplets in the twisted sector that is essential for obtaining agreement with the dual field theory.

Higher derivative corrections to Lifshitz backgrounds

We explore the effect of curvature-square corrections on Lifshitz solutions to the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton system. After exhibiting the renormalized Lifshitz scaling solution to the system with parameterized R^2 corrections, we turn to a toy model with coupling g(ϕ)C_{μνρσ}^2 and demonstrate that such a term can both stabilize the dilaton and resolve the Lifshitz horizon to AdS_2 x R^2. As an example, we construct numerical flows from AdS_4 in the UV to an intermediate Lifshitz region and then to AdS_2 x R^2 in the deep IR.

Higher-derivative couplings in string theory: dualities and the B-field

The first quantum correction to the IIA string effective action arises at the eight-derivative level and takes the schematic form (t_8 t_8 - 1/8 εε)R^4 + B_2 \wedge X_8. This correction, however, cannot be complete by itself, as it is neither supersymmetric nor T-duality covariant. We reexamine these eight-derivative couplings and conjecture that the simple replacement R -> R(Ω_+), where Ω_+ = Ω+ 1/2 H is the connection with torsion, nearly completely captures their dependence on the B-field. The exception is in the odd-odd spin structure sector, where additional terms are needed. We present here a complete result at the level of the five-point function and a partial one for the six-point function. Further evidence for this conjecture comes from considering T-duality as well as heterotic/IIA duality beyond leading order. Finally, we discuss the eleven-dimensional lift of the modified one-loop type IIA couplings.

What do non-relativistic CFTs tell us about Lifshitz spacetimes?

We study the reconstructability of (d+2)-dimensional bulk spacetime from (d+1)-dimensional boundary data, particularly concentrating on backgrounds which break (d+1)-dimensional Lorentz invariance. For a large class of such spacetimes, there exist null geodesics which do not reach the boundary. Therefore classically we expect some information is trapped in the bulk and thus invisible at the boundary. We show that this classical intuition correctly predicts the quantum situation: whenever there are null geodesics which do not reach the boundary, there are also "trapped scalar modes" whose boundary imprint is exponentially suppressed. We use these modes to show that no smearing function exists for pure Lifshitz spacetime, nor for any flow which includes a Lifshitz region. Indeed, for any (planar) spacetime which breaks (d+1)-dimensional Lorentz invariance at any radius, we show that local boundary data cannot reconstruct complete local bulk data.

Holographic c-theorems and higher derivative gravity

In AdS/CFT, the holographic Weyl anomaly computation relates the a-anomaly coefficient to the properties of the bulk action at the UV fixed point. This universal behavior suggests the possibility of a holographic c-theorem for the a-anomaly under flows to the IR. We prove such a c-theorem for higher curvature Lovelock gravity, where the bulk equations of motion remain second order. We also explore f(R) gravity as a toy model where higher derivatives cannot be avoided. In this case, monoticity of the flow requires an additional condition related to the higher derivative nature of the theory. This is in contrast to the case of f(R) black hole entropy, where the second law follows from application of the full Einstein equations and the null energy condition.

Holographic Lifshitz flows and the null energy condition

We study asymptotically Lifshitz spacetimes and the constraints on flows between Lifshitz fixed points imposed by the null energy condition. In contrast with the relativistic holographic c-theorem, where the effective AdS radius, L, is monotonically decreasing in the IR, for Lifshitz backgrounds we find that both L and z may flow in either direction. We demonstrate this with several numerical examples in a phenomenological model with a massive gauge field coupled to a real scalar.

On N = 2 Truncations of IIB on T^{1,1}

We study the N=4 gauged supergravity theory which arises from the consistent truncation of IIB supergravity on the coset T^{1,1}. We analyze three N=2 subsectors and in particular we clarify the relationship between true superpotentials for gauged supergravity and certain fake superpotentials which have been widely used in the literature. We derive a superpotential for the general reduction of type I supergravity on T^{1,1} and this together with a certain solution generating symmetry is tantamount to a superpotential for the baryonic branch of the Klebanov-Strassler solution.

Rigid Supersymmetric Backgrounds of Minimal Off-Shell Supergravity

We discuss various aspects of rigid supersymmetry within minimal N=1 off-shell supergravity using the old and new minimal formulations both in Lorentzian and Euclidean signatures. In particular, we construct all rigid supersymmetry backgrounds with a hypersurface orthogonal Killing vector. In the Lorentzian signature we show that AdS_4 provides a rigid supersymmetric background in both formulations albeit with different amounts of preserved supersymmetry. In the Euclidean signature we find new backgrounds of the old-minimal supergravity, including squashed four-spheres and a half-BPS version of flat space.

Supersymmetry of consistent massive truncations of IIB supergravity

We discuss the supersymmetry and fermionic sector of the recently obtained consistent truncations of IIB supergravity containing massive modes. In particular, we present the general form of the five-dimensional N = 4 supersymmetry transformations and equations of motion for the fermions arising in the reduction of IIB theory on T^{1,1} which contains all modes invariant under the SU(2) x SU(2) isometry group. The N = 4 reduction can be further truncated to two different N = 2 sub-sectors. For each of these, we present the N = 2 fermionic supersymmetry transformations and corresponding superpotentials. As an application, we obtain the explicit Killing spinors of the Klebanov-Strassler solution and comment on the relation to the ansatz of Papadopoulos and Tseytlin. We also demonstrate the applicability of consistent truncations on squashed Sasaki-Einstein manifolds to a class of flux compactifications, focusing on a recent solution describing the geometry of gaugino condensation on wrapped D7 branes and which possesses dynamic SU(2) structure.

A holographic c-theorem for higher derivative gravity

We prove a holographic c-theorem for the a central charge in AdS/CFT where the bulk is described by a gravitational action built out of an arbitrary function f(R^{ab}_{cd}) of the Riemann tensor coupled to bulk matter. This theorem holds provided a generalized null energy condition involving both matter and higher curvature gravitational interactions is satisfied. As an example, we consider the case of a curvature-squared action, and find that generically the generalized null energy condition involves not just the bulk matter, but also the sign of R" where a prime denotes a radial derivative and where R is the bulk scalar curvature.

Supersymmetric massive truncations of IIb supergravity on Sasaki-Einstein manifolds

Motivated by recent interest in applications of the AdS/CFT correspondence to condensed matter applications involving fermions, we present the supersymmetric completion of the recent massive truncations of IIB supergravity on Sasaki-Einstein manifolds. In particular, we reduce the fermionic sector of IIB supergravity to obtain five dimensional N=2 supergravity coupled to one hypermultiplet and one massive vector multiplet. The supersymmetry transformations and equations of motion are presented and analyzed. Finally, a particularly interesting truncation to N=2 supergravity coupled to a single hypermultiplet is presented which is the supersymmetric completion of the recently constructed bosonic theory dual to a 3+1 dimensional system exhibiting a superconducting phase transition.

Computing 1/N^2 corrections in AdS/CFT

Stringy corrections in AdS/CFT generally fall into the category of either α' effects or string loop effects, corresponding to 1/λand 1/N corrections, respectively, in the dual field theory. While α'^3R^4 corrections have been well studied, at least in the context of N=4 super-Yang-Mills, less is known about the 1/N^2 corrections arising from closed string loops. In this paper, we consider AdS_5 x SE_5 compactifications of the IIB string, and compute the closed string loop correction to the anomaly coefficients a and c in the dual field theory. For T^{1,1} reductions, we find the string loop correction to yield c-a=1/24, which is the contribution to c-a of a free N=2 hypermultiplet. We also comment on reductions to lower dimensional AdS theories as well as the nature of T-duality with higher derivatives.

Consistent massive truncations of IIB supergravity on Sasaki-Einstein manifolds

Recent work on holographic superconductivity and gravitational duals of systems with non-relativistic conformal symmetry have made use of consistent truncations of D=10 and D=11 supergravity retaining some massive modes in the Kaluza-Klein tower. In this paper we focus on reductions of IIB supergravity to five dimensions on a Sasaki-Einstein manifold, and extend these previous truncations to encompass the entire bosonic sector of gauged D=5, N=2 supergravity coupled to massive multiplets up to the second Kaluza-Klein level. We conjecture that a necessary condition for the consistency of massive truncations is to only retain the lowest modes in the massive trajectories of the Kaluza-Klein mode decomposition of the original fields. This is an extension of the well-known result that consistent truncations may be obtained by restricting to the singlet sector of the internal symmetry group.

Black holes in five-dimensional gauged supergravity with higher derivatives

We examine five-dimensional $\mathcal N=2$ gauged supergravity including terms up to four derivatives. These additional terms correspond to the supersymmetric completion of $R^2$, and were originally obtained in hep-th/0611329 using conformal supergravity techniques. Here we integrate out the auxiliary fields and obtain the on-shell action for minimal supergravity with such corrections. We then construct $R$-charged AdS black holes to linear order in the four derivative terms and investigate the effect of these corrections on their thermodynamical properties. Finally, we relate the geometrical coefficients governing the four-derivative corrections to gauge theory data using holographic anomaly matching. This enables us to obtain a microscopic expression for the entropy of the solutions.

Higher Derivative Corrections to R-charged Black Holes: Boundary Counterterms and the Mass-Charge Relation

We carry out the holographic renormalization of Einstein-Maxwell theory with curvature-squared corrections. In particular, we demonstrate how to construct the generalized Gibbons-Hawking surface term needed to ensure a perturbatively well-defined variational principle. This treatment ensures the absence of ghost degrees of freedom at the linearized perturbative order in the higher-derivative corrections. We use the holographically renormalized action to study the thermodynamics of R-charged black holes with higher derivatives and to investigate their mass to charge ratio in the extremal limit. In five dimensions, there seems to be a connection between the sign of the higher derivative couplings required to satisfy the weak gravity conjecture and that violating the shear viscosity to entropy bound. This is in turn related to possible constraints on the central charges of the dual CFT, in particular to the sign of c-a.

Inflating with the QCD Axion

We show that the QCD axion can drive inflation via a series of tunneling events. For axion models with a softly broken $Z_N$ symmetry, the axion potential has a series of $N$ local minima and may be modeled by a tilted cosine. Chain inflation results along this tilted cosine: the field tunnels from an initial minimum near the top of the potential through a series of ever lower minima to the bottom. This results in sufficient inflation and reheating. QCD axions, potentially detectable in current searches, may thus simultaneously solve problems in particle physics and provide inflation.

Black hole mass and Hamilton-Jacobi counterterms

We apply the method of holographic renormalization to computing black hole masses in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spaces. In particular, we demonstrate that the Hamilton-Jacobi approach to obtaining the boundary action yields a set of counterterms sufficient to render the masses finite for four, five, six and seven-dimensional R-charged black holes in gauged supergravities. In addition, we prove that the familiar black hole thermodynamical expressions and in particular the first law continues to holds in general in the presence of arbitrary matter couplings to gravity.

Bubbling 1/2 BPS solutions of minimal six-dimensional supergravity

We continue our previous analysis (hep-th/0412045) of 1/2 BPS solutions to minimal 6d supergravity of bubbling form. We show that, by turning on an axion field in the T^2 torus reduction, the constraint F \wedge F, present in the case of an S^1 x S^1 reduction, is relaxed. We prove that the four-dimensional reduction to a bosonic field theory, whose content is the metric, a gauge field, two scalars and a pseudo-scalar (the axion), is consistent. Moreover, these reductions when lifted to the six-dimensional minimal supergravity represent the sought-after family of 1/2 BPS bubbling solutions.

Higher Order Integrability in Generalized Holonomy

Supersymmetric backgrounds in M-theory often involve four-form flux in addition to pure geometry. In such cases, the classification of supersymmetric vacua involves the notion of generalized holonomy taking values in SL(32,R), the Clifford group for eleven-dimensional spinors. Although previous investigations of generalized holonomy have focused on the curvature \Rm_{MN}(Ω) of the generalized SL(32,R) connection Ω_M, we demonstrate that this local information is incomplete, and that satisfying the higher order integrability conditions is an essential feature of generalized holonomy. We also show that, while this result differs from the case of ordinary Riemannian holonomy, it is nevertheless compatible with the Ambrose-Singer holonomy theorem.

Mass in anti-de Sitter spaces

The boundary stress tensor approach has proven extremely useful in defining mass and angular momentum in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spaces with CFT duals. An integral part of this method is the use of boundary counterterms to regulate the gravitational action and stress tensor. In addition to the standard gravitational counterterms, in the presence of matter we advocate the use of a finite counterterm proportional to phi^2 (in five dimensions). We demonstrate that this finite shift is necessary to properly reproduce the expected mass/charge relation for R-charged black holes in AdS_5.

Charged configurations in (A)dS spaces

We construct new backgrounds of d-dimensional gravity with a negative cosmological constant coupled to a m-form field strength. We find a class of magnetically charged anti-de Sitter black holes with m-dimensional Einstein horizon of positive, zero or negative curvature. We also construct a new magnetic co-dimension four brane for the case of m=3. This brane obeys a charge quantization condition of the form q \sim L^2 where q is the magnetic 3-form charge and L is the AdS radius. In addition, we work out some time-dependent solutions.

Generalized holonomy of M-theory vacua

The number of M-theory vacuum supersymmetries, 0 <= n <= 32, is given by the number of singlets appearing in the decomposition of the 32 of SL(32,R) under H \subset SL(32,R) where H is the holonomy group of the generalized connection which incorporates non-vanishing 4-form. Here we compute this generalized holonomy for the n=16 examples of the M2-brane, M5-brane, M-wave, M-monopole, for a variety of their n=8 intersections and also for the n>16 pp waves.

Hidden Spacetime Symmetries and Generalized Holonomy in M-theory

In M-theory vacua with vanishing 4-form F, one can invoke the ordinary Riemannian holonomy H \subset SO(1,10) to account for unbroken supersymmetries n=1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 16, 32. However, the generalized holonomy conjecture, valid for non-zero F, can account for more exotic fractions of supersymmetry, in particular 16<n<32. The conjectured holonomies are given by H \subset G where G are the generalized structure groups G=SO(d-1,1) x G(spacelike), G=ISO(d-1) x G(null) and G=SO(d) x G(timelike) with 1<=d<11. For example, G(spacelike)=SO(16), G(null)=[SU(8) x U(1)] \ltimes R^{56} and G(timelike)=SO*(16) when d=3. Although extending spacetime symmetries, there is no conflict with the Coleman-Mandula theorem. The holonomy conjecture rules out certain vacua which are otherwise permitted by the supersymmetry algebra.

Linearized Gravity in the Karch-Randall Braneworld

We present a linearized gravity investigation of the bent braneworld, where an AdS_4 brane is embedded in AdS_5. While we focus on static spherically symmetric mass distributions on the brane, much of the analysis continues to hold for more general configurations. In addition to the identification of the massive Karch-Randall graviton and a tower of Kaluza-Klein gravitons, we find a radion mode that couples to the trace of the energy-momentum tensor on the brane. The Karch-Randall radion arises as a property of the embedding of the brane in the bulk space, even in the context of a single brane model.

Quantum Discontinuity for Massive Spin 3/2 with a Lambda Term

We show that the recently demonstrated absence of the van Dam-Veltman-Zakharov discontinuity for massive spin 3/2 with a Lambda term is an artifact of the tree level approximation, and that the discontinuity reappears at one loop. As a numerical check on the calculation, we rederive the vanishing of the one- loop beta function for D=11 supergravity on AdS_4 x S^7 level-by-level in the Kaluza-Klein tower.

A supersymmetric Type IIB Randall-Sundrum realization

We show that an earlier domain wall solution of type IIB supergravity provides a supersymmetric realization of the Randall-Sundrum brane-world, and give its ten-dimensional interpretation in terms of IIB 3-branes. We also explain how previous no-go theorems are circumvented. In particular, whereas D=5 supergravity scalars have AdS_5 energy E_0 <= 4 and are unable to support a D=5 positive tension brane, our scalar has E_0=8, and is the breathing mode of the S^5 compactification. Another essential element of the construction is the implementation of a Z_2 symmetry by patching together compactifications with opposite signs for their 5-form field strengths. This is thus a IIB analogue of a previous D=5 3-brane realization of the Horava-Witten orbifold. A mode-locking phenomenon avoids the appearance of negative energy zero-modes in spite of the necessity of a D=10 negative tension brane-source.

Complementarity of the Maldacena and Randall-Sundrum Pictures

We revive an old result, that one-loop corrections to the graviton propagator induce 1/r^3 corrections to the Newtonian gravitational potential, and compute the coefficient due to closed loops of the U(N) {\cal N}=4 super-Yang-Mills theory that arises in Maldacena's AdS/CFT correspondence. We find exact agreement with the coefficient appearing in the Randall-Sundrum brane-world proposal. This provides more evidence for the complementarity of the two pictures.

Massive Higher Spin States in String Theory and the Principle of Equivalence

In this paper we study three point functions of the Type II superstring involving one graviton and two massive states, focusing in particular on the spin-7/2 fermions at the first mass level. Defining a gravitational quadrupole ``h-factor'', we find that the non-minimal interactions of string states in general are parametrized by $h\ne1$, in contrast to the preferred field theory value of h=1 (for tree-level unitarity). This difference arises from the fact that consistent gravitational interactions of strings are related to the presence of a complete tower of massive states, not present in the ordinary field theory case.

N=2 Supersymmetry and Dipole Moments

We derive sum rules for the magnetic and electric dipole moments of all particle states of an N=2 supermultiplet. For short representations, we find agreement with previously determined N=1 sum rules, while there is added freedom for long representations (expressed as certain scalar expectation values). With mild assumptions we find the simple result that the supersymmetry generated spin adds to the magnetic (electric) dipole moment with strength corresponding to $g=2$ ($g_e=0$). This result is equally valid for N=1, this time without any further assumptions.

The decay $b\to sγ$ in the 3-3-1 model

The 3-3-1 model, based on the gauge group $SU(3)_c\times SU(3)_L\times U(1)_X$, makes a natural prediction of three generations based on anomaly cancellation. Since this is accomplished by incorporating the third family of quarks differently from the other two, it leads to potentially large flavor changing neutral currents. A sensitive place to look for such effects is the flavor changing $b\to sγ$ decay, which has recently been measured at CLEO. We compute this decay rate in the 3-3-1 model and compare it with that of the two-Higgs-doublet model, a subset of the full 3-3-1 model. We find that the additional 3-3-1 physics weakens the bound on the charged Higgs mass from $M_{H^+}>290$~GeV to $M_{H^+}\agt120$~GeV.

Lepton flavor changing processes and CP violation in the 331 model

By extending the electroweak gauge group to $SU(3)_L\times U(1)_Y$, the 331 model incorporates dilepton gauge bosons $Y$ which do not respect individual lepton family number. We point out that, in addition to family diagonal couplings such as $Y$--$e$--$e$ that change lepton family number by two units, dileptons may also have family non-diagonal couplings such as $Y$--$μ$--$e$. The latter coupling violates lepton family number by a single unit and manifests itself via lepton flavor changing decays such as $μ\to3e$ and $μ\to eγ$. The family non-diagonal interaction can be CP violating and typically generates extremely large leptonic electric dipole moments. We demonstrate a natural mechanism for eliminating both single unit lepton flavor violation and large leptonic CP violation. Although we focus on the 331 model, our results are applicable to other dilepton models as well, including $SU(15)$ grand unification.

Generation non-universality and flavor changing neutral currents in the 331 model

The 331 model, an extension of the standard electroweak theory to $SU(3)_L\times U(1)_X$, naturally predicts three families of quarks and leptons via the requirement of anomaly cancellation. This is accomplished by making one of the quark families transform differently from the other two, thus leading to flavor changing neutral currents. Using experimental input on neutral meson mixing, we show that the third family must be the one that is singled out, at least up to small family mixing. We additionally describe a convenient way to parametrize the new mixing matrix that plays a role in the gauge interactions of the ordinary quarks with the new 331 quarks.

Spectrum and Thermodynamics of the one-dimensional supersymmetric t-J model with $1/r^2$ exchange and hopping

We derive the spectrum and the thermodynamics of the one-dimensional supersymmetric t-J model with long range hopping and spin exchange using a set of maximal-spin eigenstates. This spectrum confirms the recent conjecture that the asymptotic Bethe-ansatz spectrum is exact. By empirical determining the spinon degeneracies of each state, we are able to explicitly construct the free energy.

Running Gauge Couplings and Thresholds in the Type II Superstring

A distinctive feature of string unification is the possibility of unification by a non-simply-laced group. This occurs most naturally in four dimensional type~II string models where the gauge symmetry is realized by Kac-Moody algebras at different levels. We investigate the running coupling constants and the one-loop thresholds for such general models. As a specific case, we examine a $\rm SU(3)\times U(1)\times U(1)$ model and find that the threshold corrections lead to a small $6\%$ increase in the unification scale.
