The non-Abelian X-ray transform on surfaces

This paper settles the question of injectivity of the non-Abelian X-ray transform on simple surfaces for the general linear group of invertible complex matrices. The main idea is to use a factorization theorem for Loop Groups to reduce to the setting of the unitary group, where energy methods and scalar holomorphic integrating factors can be used. We also show that our main theorem extends to cover the case of an arbitrary Lie group.

The Ruelle zeta function at zero for nearly hyperbolic 3-manifolds

We show that for a generic conformal metric perturbation of a compact hyperbolic 3-manifold $Σ$ with Betti number $b_1$, the order of vanishing of the Ruelle zeta function at zero equals $4-b_1$, while in the hyperbolic case it is equal to $4-2b_1$. This is in contrast to the 2-dimensional case where the order of vanishing is a topological invariant. The proof uses the microlocal approach to dynamical zeta functions, giving a geometric description of generalized Pollicott-Ruelle resonant differential forms at 0 in the hyperbolic case and using first variation for the perturbation. To show that the first variation is generically nonzero we introduce a new identity relating pushforwards of products of resonant and coresonant 2-forms on the sphere bundle $SΣ$ with harmonic 1-forms on $Σ$.

A sharp stability estimate for tensor tomography in non-positive curvature

We consider the geodesic X-ray transform acting on solenoidal tensor fields on a compact simply connected manifold with strictly convex boundary and non-positive curvature. We establish a stability estimate of the form $L^2\mapsto H^{1/2}_{T}$, where the $H^{1/2}_{T}$-space is defined using the natural parametrization of geodesics as initial boundary points and incoming directions (fan-beam geometry); only tangential derivatives at the boundary are used. The proof is based on the Pestov identity with boundary term localized in frequency.

Broken ray tensor tomography with one reflecting obstacle

We show that a tensor field of any rank integrates to zero over all broken rays if and only if it is a symmetrized covariant derivative of a lower order tensor which satisfies a symmetry condition at the reflecting part of the boundary and vanishes on the rest. This is done in a geometry with non-positive sectional curvature and a strictly convex obstacle in any dimension. We give two proofs, both of which contain new features also in the absence of reflections. The result is new even for scalars in dimensions above two.

Consistent Inversion of Noisy Non-Abelian X-Ray Transforms

For $M$ a simple surface, the non-linear statistical inverse problem of recovering a matrix field $Φ: M \to \mathfrak{so}(n)$ from discrete, noisy measurements of the $SO(n)$-valued scattering data $C_Φ$ of a solution of a matrix ODE is considered ($n\geq 2$). Injectivity of the map $Φ\mapsto C_Φ$ was established by [Paternain, Salo, Uhlmann; Geom.Funct.Anal. 2012]. A statistical algorithm for the solution of this inverse problem based on Gaussian process priors is proposed, and it is shown how it can be implemented by infinite-dimensional MCMC methods. It is further shown that as the number $N$ of measurements of point-evaluations of $C_Φ$ increases, the statistical error in the recovery of $Φ$ converges to zero in $L^2(M)$-distance at a rate that is algebraic in $1/N$, and approaches $1/\sqrt N$ for smooth matrix fields $Φ$. The proof relies, among other things, on a new stability estimate for the inverse map $C_Φ\to Φ$. Key applications of our results are discussed in the case $n=3$ to polarimetric neutron tomography, see [Desai et al., Nature Sc.Rep. 2018] and [Hilger et al., Nature Comm. 2018]

Resonant spaces for volume preserving Anosov flows

We consider Anosov flows on closed 3-manifolds preserving a volume form $Ω$. Following Dyatlov and Zworski (2017) we study spaces of invariant distributions with values in the bundle of exterior forms whose wavefront set is contained in the dual of the unstable bundle. Our first result computes the dimension of these spaces in terms of the first Betti number of the manifold, the cohomology class $[ι_{X}Ω]$ (where $X$ is the infinitesimal generator of the flow) and the helicity. These dimensions coincide with the Pollicott-Ruelle resonance multiplicities under the assumption of $\textit{semisimplicity}$. We prove various results regarding semisimplicity on 1-forms, including an example showing that it may fail for time changes of hyperbolic geodesic flows. We also study non null-homologous deformations of contact Anosov flows and we show that there is always a splitting Pollicott-Ruelle resonance on 1-forms and that semisimplicity persists in this instance. These results have consequences for the order of vanishing at zero of the Ruelle zeta function. Finally our analysis also incorporates a flat unitary twist in both, the resonant spaces and the Ruelle zeta function.

Convex projective surfaces with compatible Weyl connection are hyperbolic

We show that a properly convex projective structure $\mathfrak{p}$ on a closed oriented surface of negative Euler characteristic arises from a Weyl connection if and only if $\mathfrak{p}$ is hyperbolic. We phrase the problem as a non-linear PDE for a Beltrami differential by using that $\mathfrak{p}$ admits a compatible Weyl connection if and only if a certain holomorphic curve exists. Turning this non-linear PDE into a transport equation, we obtain our result by applying methods from geometric inverse problems. In particular, we use an extension of a remarkable $L^2$-energy identity known as Pestov's identity to prove a vanishing theorem for the relevant transport equation.

Conformal great circle flows on the three-sphere

We consider a closed orientable Riemannian 3-manifold $(M,g)$ and a vector field $X$ with unit norm whose integral curves are geodesics of $g$. Any such vector field determines naturally a 2-plane bundle contained in the kernel of the contact form of the geodesic flow of $g$. We study when this 2-plane bundle remains invariant under two natural almost complex structures. We also provide a geometric condition that ensures that $X$ is the Reeb vector field of the 1-form $λ$ obtained by contracting $g$ with $X$. We apply these results to the case of great circle flows on the 3-sphere with two objectives in mind: one is to recover the result in \cite{GG} that a volume preserving great circle flow must be Hopf and the other is to characterize in a similar fashion great circle flows that are conformal relative to the almost complex structure in the kernel of $λ$ given by rotation by $π/2$ according to the orientation of $M$.

Invariant distributions, Beurling transforms and tensor tomography in higher dimensions

In the recent articles \cite{PSU1,PSU3}, a number of tensor tomography results were proved on two-dimensional manifolds. The purpose of this paper is to extend some of these methods to manifolds of any dimension. A central concept is the surjectivity of the adjoint of the geodesic ray transform, or equivalently the existence of certain distributions that are invariant under geodesic flow. We prove that on any Anosov manifold, one can find invariant distributions with controlled first Fourier coefficients. The proof is based on subelliptic type estimates and a Pestov identity. We present an alternative construction valid on manifolds with nonpositive curvature, based on the fact that a natural Beurling transform on such manifolds turns out to be essentially a contraction. Finally, we obtain uniqueness results in tensor tomography both on simple and Anosov manifolds that improve earlier results by assuming a condition on the terminator value for a modified Jacobi equation.

The X-ray transform for connections in negative curvature

We consider integral geometry inverse problems for unitary connections and skew-Hermitian Higgs fields on manifolds with negative sectional curvature. The results apply to manifolds in any dimension, with or without boundary, and also in the presence of trapped geodesics. In the boundary case, we show injectivity of the attenuated ray transform on tensor fields with values in a Hermitian bundle (i.e. vector valued case). We also show that a connection and Higgs field on a Hermitian bundle are determined up to gauge by the knowledge of the parallel transport between boundary points along all possible geodesics. The main tools are an energy identity, the Pestov identity with a unitary connection, which is presented in a general form, and a precise analysis of the singularities of solutions of transport equations when there are trapped geodesics. In the case of closed manifolds, we obtain similar results modulo the obstruction given by twisted conformal Killing tensors, and we also study this obstruction.

Spectral rigidity and invariant distributions on Anosov surfaces

This article considers inverse problems on closed Riemannian surfaces whose geodesic flow is Anosov. We prove spectral rigidity for any Anosov surface and injectivity of the geodesic ray transform on solenoidal 2-tensors. We also establish surjectivity results for the adjoint of the geodesic ray transform on solenoidal tensors. The surjectivity results are of independent interest and imply the existence of many geometric invariant distributions on the unit sphere bundle. In particular, we show that on any Anosov surface $(M,g)$, given a smooth function $f$ on $M$ there is a distribution in the Sobolev space $H^{-1}(SM)$ that is invariant under the geodesic flow and whose projection to $M$ is the given function $f$.

Floer homology for non-resonant magnetic fields on flat tori

In this article we define and compute the Novikov Floer homology associated to a non-resonant magnetic field and a mechanical Hamiltonian on a flat torus T^{2N}. As a result, we deduce that this Hamiltonian system always has 2N+1 contractible solutions, and generically even 2^{2N} contractible solutions. Moreover if there exists a non-degenerate non-contractible solution then there necessarily exists another.

On the existence of three closed magnetic geodesics for subcritical energies

We consider exact magnetic flows on closed orientable surfaces. We show that for almost every energy $κ$ below Mañé's critical value of the universal covering there are always at least three distinct closed magnetic geodesics with energy $κ$. If in addition the energy level is assumed to be non-degenerate we prove existence of infinitely many closed magnetic geodesics.

Symplectic and contact properties of the Mañé critical value of the universal cover

We discuss several symplectic aspects related to the Mañé critical value c_u of the universal cover of a Tonelli Hamiltonian. In particular we show that the critical energy level is never of virtual contact type for manifolds of dimension greater than or equal to three. We also show the symplectic invariance of the finiteness of the Peierls barrier and the Aubry set of the universal cover. We also provide an example where c_u coincides with the infimum of Mather's α-function but the Aubry set of the universal cover is empty and the Peierls barrier is finite. A second example exhibits all the ergodic invariant minimizing measures with zero homotopy, showing that, quite surprisingly, the union of their supports is not a graph, in contrast with Mather's celebrated graph theorem.

Equivariant symplectic homology of Anosov contact structures

We show that the differential in positive equivariant symplectic homology or linearized contact homology vanishes for non-degenerate Reeb flows with a continuous invariant Lagrangian subbundle (e.g. Anosov Reeb flows). Several applications are given, including obstructions to the existence of these flows and abundance of periodic orbits for contact forms representing an Anosov contact structure.

Floer homology for magnetic fields with at most linear growth on the universal cover

The Floer homology of a cotangent bundle is isomorphic to loop space homology of the underlying manifold, as proved by Abbondandolo-Schwarz, Salamon-Weber, and Viterbo. In this paper we show that in the presence of a Dirac magnetic monopole which admits a primitive with sublinear growth on the universal cover, the Floer homology in atoroidal free homotopy classes is again isomorphic to loop space homology. As a consequence we prove that for any atoroidal free homotopy class and any sufficiently small T>0, any magnetic flow associated to the Dirac magnetic monopole has a closed orbit of period T belonging to the given free homotopy class. In the case where the Dirac magnetic monopole admits a bounded primitive on the universal cover we also prove the Conley conjecture for Hamiltonians that are quadratic at infinity, i.e., we show that such Hamiltonians have infinitely many periodic orbits.

The attenuated ray transform for connections and Higgs fields

We show that for a simple surface with boundary the attenuated ray transform in the presence of a unitary connection and a skew-Hermitian Higgs field is injective modulo the natural obstruction for functions and vector fields. We also show that the connection and the Higgs field are uniquely determined by the scattering relation modulo a gauge transformation. The proofs involve a Pestov type energy identity for connections together with holomorphic gauge transformations which arrange the curvature of the connection to have definite sign.

On the growth rate of leaf-wise intersections

We define a new variant of Rabinowitz Floer homology that is particularly well suited to studying the growth rate of leaf-wise intersections. We prove that for closed manifolds $M$ whose loop space is "complicated", if $Σ$ is a non-degenerate fibrewise starshaped hypersurface in $T^*M$ and $ϕ$ is a generic Hamiltonian diffeomorphism then the number of leaf-wise intersection points of $ϕ$ in $Σ$ grows exponentially in time. Concrete examples of such manifolds $M$ are the connected sum of two copies of $S^2 \times S^2$, the connected sum of $T^4$ and $CP^2$, or any surface of genus greater than one.

Transparent pairs

Let $M$ be a closed orientable Riemannian surface. Consider an SO(3)-connection $A$ and a Higgs field $Φ:M\to so(3)$. The pair $(A,Φ)$ naturally induces a cocycle over the geodesic flow of $M$. We classify (up to gauge transformations) cohomologically trivial pairs $(A,Φ)$ with finite Fourier series in terms of a suitable Bäcklund transformation. In particular, if $M$ is negatively curved we obtain a full classification of SO(3)-transparent pairs.

Index computations in Rabinowitz Floer homology

In this note we study two index questions. In the first we establish the relationship between the Morse indices of the free time action functional and the fixed time action functional. The second is related to Rabinowitz Floer homology. Our index computations are based on a correction term which is defined as follows: around a non-degenerate Hamiltonian orbit lying in a fixed energy level a well-known theorem says that one can find a whole cylinder of orbits parametrized by the energy. The correction term is determined by whether the periods of the orbits are increasing or decreasing as one moves up the orbit cylinder. We also provide an example to show that, even above the Mañé critical value, the periods may be increasing thus producing a jump in the Morse index of the free time action functional in relation to the Morse index of the fixed time action functional.

Stability of Anosov Hamiltonian Structures

Consider the tangent bundle of a Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ of dimension $n\geq3$ admitting a metric of negative curvature (not necessarily equal to $g$) endowed with a twisted symplectic structure defined by a closed 2-form on $M$. We consider the Hamiltonian flow generated (with respect to that symplectic structure) by the standard kinetic energy Hamiltonian, and we consider a compact regular energy level $Σ_{k}:=H^{-1}(k)$ of $H$. Suppose $Σ_{k}$ is an Anosov energy level. We prove that if $n$ is odd, then if the Hamiltonian flow restricted to $Σ_{k}$ is Anosov with $C^{1}$ weak bundles then the Hamiltonian structure $(Σ_{k}$ is stable if and only if it is contact. If $n$ is even and in addition the flow is assumed to be 1/2-pinched then the same conclusion holds. As a corollary we deduce that if $g$ is negatively curved, strictly 1/4-pinched and the 2-form defining the twisted symplectic structure is not exact then the Hamiltonian structure $(Σ_{k}$ is never stable for all sufficiently large $k$.

Transparent connections over negatively curved surfaces

Let $(M,g)$ be a closed oriented negatively curved surface. A unitary connection on a Hermitian vector bundle over $M$ is said to be transparent if its parallel transport along the closed geodesics of $g$ is the identity. We study the space of such connections modulo gauge and we prove a classification result in terms of the solutions of certain PDE that arises naturally in the problem. We also show a local uniqueness result for the trivial connection and that there is a transparent SU(2)-connection associated to each meromorphic function on $M$.
