Discovery of carbon-based strongest and hardest amorphous material

Carbon is likely the most fascinating element of the periodic table because of the diversity of its allotropes stemming from its variable (sp, sp2, and sp3) bonding motifs. Exploration of new forms of carbon has been an eternal theme of contemporary scientific research. Here we report on novel amorphous carbon phases containing high fraction of sp3 bonded atoms recovered after compressing fullerene C60 to previously unexplored high pressure and temperature. The synthesized carbons are the hardest and strongest amorphous materials known to date, capable of scratching diamond crystal and approaching its strength which is evidenced by complimentary mechanical tests. Photoluminescence and absorption spectra of the materials demonstrate they are semiconductors with tunable bandgaps in the range of 1.5-2.2 eV, comparable to that of amorphous silicon. A remarkable combination of the outstanding mechanical and electronic properties makes this class of amorphous carbons an excellent candidate for photovoltaic applications demanding ultrahigh strength and wear resistance.

Large spin to charge conversion in topological superconductor \b{eta}-PdBi2 at room temperature

\b{eta}-PdBi2 has attracted much attention for its prospective ability to possess simultaneously topological surface and superconducting states due to its unprecedented spin-orbit interaction (SOC). Whereas most works have focused solely on investigating its topological surface states, the coupling between spin and charge degrees of freedom in this class of quantum material remains unexplored. Here we first report a study of spin-to-charge conversion in a \b{eta}-PdBi2 ultrathin film grown by molecular beam epitaxy, utilizing a spin pumping technique to perform inverse spin Hall effect measurements. We find that the room temperature spin Hall angle of Fe/\b{eta}-PdBi2, θ_SH=0.037. This value is one order of magnitude larger than that of reported conventional superconductors, and is comparable to that of the best SOC metals and topological insulators. Our results provide an avenue for developing superconductor-based spintronic applications.

Learning Enabled Dense Space-division Multiplexing through a Single Multimode Fibre

Space-division multiplexing is a promising technology in optical fibre communication to improve the transmission capacity of a single optical fibre. However, the number of channels that can be multiplexed is limited by the crosstalks between channels, and the multiplexing is only applied to few-mode or multi-core fibres. Here, we propose a high-spatial-density channel multiplexing framework employing deep learning for standard multimode fibres (MMF). We present a proof-of-concept experimental system, consisting of a single light source, a single digital-micromirror-device modulator, a single detection camera, and a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) to demonstrate up to 400-channel simultaneous data transmission with accuracy close to 100% over MMFs of different types, diameters and lengths. A novel scalable semi-supervised learning model is proposed to adapt the CNN to the time-varying MMF information channels in real-time, to overcome the environmental changes such as temperature variations and vibrations, and to reconstruct the input data from complex crosstalks among hundreds of channels. This deep-learning based approach is promising to maximize the use of the spatial dimension of MMFs, and to break the present number-of-channel limit in space-division multiplexing for future high-capacity MMF transmission data links.

Period doubling eigenstates in a fiber laser mode-locked by nonlinear polarization rotation

Due to the weak birefringence of single mode fibers, solitons generated in fiber lasers are indeed vector pulses and exhibit periodic parameter change including polarization evolution even when there is a polarizer inside the cavity. Period doubling eigenstates of solitons generated in a fiber laser mode-locked by the nonlinear polarization rotation, i.e., period doubling of polarization components of the soliton, are numerically explored in detail. We found that, apart from the synchronous evolution between the two polarization components, there exists asynchronous development depending on the detailed operation conditions. In addition, period doubling of one polarization component together with period-one of another polarization component can be achieved. When the period tripling window is obtained, much complexed dynamics on the two polarization components could be observed.

Period-doubling bifurcation of dissipative-soliton-resonance pulses in a passively mode-locked fiber laser

We report on the experimental observation of period-doubling bifurcation of dissipative-soliton-resonance (DSR) pulses in a fiber laser passively mode-locked by using the nonlinear optical loop mirror. Increasing the pump power of the fiber laser, we show that temporally a stable, uniform DSR pulse train could be transformed into a period-doubling state, exhibiting two sets of pulse parameters between the adjacent cavity roundtrip. It is found that DSR pulses in the period-doubling state could maintain the typical feature of DSR pulse: fixed pulse peak power and linear variation in pulse width with respect to the pump power change. The mechanism for achieving period-doubling of DSR pulses is discussed.

Dimer-induced heavy-fermion superconductivity in the Shastry-Sutherland Kondo lattice model

We study the Kondo lattice model on the geometrically frustrated Shastry-Sutherland lattice focusing on the quantum phase transition between the valence bond solid and the heavy fermion liquid phase. By explicitly including spinon pairing of local moments at the mean-field level, we establish the emergence of a unique heavy fermion superconducting phase induced by dimer ordering of the local moments coexisting with Kondo hybridization. Furthermore, we demonstrate that for suitable choices of parameters, a partial Kondo-screening phase, where some of the valence bonds are broken, precedes the aforementioned dimer-induced superconducting phase. Our results have important implications in understanding the experimental observations in the heavy fermion Shasstry-Sutherland compounds.

Modeling of a Single Multimode Fiber Imaging System

We present a detailed theoretical analysis on image transmission via a single multimode fiber (MMF). A single MMF imaging model is developed to study the light wave propagation from the light source to the camera, by using free-space Fourier optics theory and mode-coupling theory. A mathematical expression is obtained for the complete single MMF imaging system, which is further validated by image-transmission simulations. Our model is believed to be the first theoretical model to describe the complete MMF imaging system based on the transmission of individual modes. Therefore, this model is robust and capable of analyzing MMF image transmission under specific mode-coupling conditions. We use our model to study bending-induced image blur in single-MMF image transmission, and the result has found a good agreement with that of existing experimental studies. These should provide important insights into future MMF imaging system developments.

Magnetic phases in the S=1 Shastry-Sutherland model with uniaxial anisotropy

We explore the field induced magnetic phases of an $S=1$ $XXZ$ model with single-ion anisotropy and large Ising-like anisotropy on a Shastry Sutherland lattice over a wide range of Hamiltonian parameters and applied magnetic field. The multitude of ground state phases are characterized in detail in terms of their thermodynamic properties and the underlying classical (Ising limit) spin arrangements for the plateau phases are identified by calculating the static structure factors. The enlarged local Hilbert space of the $S=1$ spins results in several new ground state phases that are not realized for $S=1/2$ spins. These include the quantum paramagnetic state that is ubiquitous to $S=1$ spins with single ion anisotropy, two different spin supersolid phases (with distinct longitudinal ordering) and a magnetization plateau that arises as a direct descendant of the 1/3 plateau due to quantum fluctuations that are not possible for $S=1/2$ spins. We predict the same mechanism will lead to plateaus at smaller fractions of 1/3 for higher spins. The full momentum dependence of the longitudinal and transverse components of the static structure factor is calculated in the spin supersolid phase to demonstrate the simultaneous existence of diagonal and off-diagonal long-range order as well as the different longitudinal orderings.
