Chiral Spin Bobbers in Exchange-Coupled Hard-Soft Magnetic Bilayers

The spin structure of exchange-coupled MnBi:Co-Fe bilayers is investigated by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), polarized neutron reflectometry (PNR), and micromagnetic simu-lations. The purpose of the present research is two-fold. First, the current search for new permanent-magnet materials includes hard-soft nanocomposites, and the analysis of coercivity mechanisms in these structures is an important aspect of this quest. Second, topological micro-magnetic structures such as skyrmions have recently become of intense fundamental and applied research, for example in the context of spin-based electronics. We find that the magnetization reversal of the MnBi:Co-Fe bilayer structure involves a curling-type twisting of the magnetization in the film plane. This curling in the exchange-coupled hard-soft magnetic bilayers is reminiscent of chiral spin structures known as bobbers and, in fact, establishes a new type of skyrmionic spin structure.

A Mortality Model for Multi-populations: A Semi-Parametric Approach

Mortality is different across countries, states and regions. Several empirical research works however reveal that mortality trends exhibit a common pattern and show similar structures across populations. The key element in analyzing mortality rate is a time-varying indicator curve. Our main interest lies in validating the existence of the common trends among these curves, the similar gender differences and their variability in location among the curves at the national level. Motivated by the empirical findings, we make the study of estimating and forecasting mortality rates based on a semi-parametric approach, which is applied to multiple curves with the shape-related nonlinear variation. This approach allows us to capture the common features contained in the curve functions and meanwhile provides the possibility to characterize the nonlinear variation via a few deviation parameters. These parameters carry an instructive summary of the time-varying curve functions and can be further used to make a suggestive forecast analysis for countries with barren data sets. In this research the model is illustrated with mortality rates of Japan and China, and extended to incorporate more countries.

Eigenvalues and Eigenfunctions of Two Coupled Normal Metal Nano-rings

A general scheme is developed to deal with 1D lattice systems that could be topologically complicated. It is aimed to give a complete study of two coupled normal metal rings. Our method starts with an investigation of the local expressions of the eigenfunctions. By connecting different parts of the system, all the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions can be obtained. It is found that there is a possibility for the existence of localized states, which is beyond previous expectations.

Study of antiferromagnetic and nematic phase transitions in $BaFe_2(As_{1-x}P_x)_2$ by AC micro-calorimetry and SQUID magnetometry

We study the antiferromagnetic (AFM) and structural phase transitions in single crystal $BaFe_2(As_{1-x}P_x)_2$ $(x=0, 0.3)$ at temperatures $T_N$ and $T_S$, respectively, by high resolution ac microcalorimetry and SQUID magnetometry. The specific heat measurements of both as grown and annealed $BaFe_2As_2$ displays a sharp peak at the AFM/Structural transitions. A kink in the entropy of annealed $BaFe_2As_2$ gives evidence for splitting of the two transitions by approximately 0.5K. No additional features could be identified in the specific heat of both $BaFe_2As_2$ and $BaFe_2(As_{0.7}P_{0.3})_2$ in the temperature regions around $T^*$ > $T_S$ where torque measurements [S. Kasahara et al., Nature 486, 382 (2012)] had revealed the "true" nematic phase transition, indicating that the behavior at $T^*$ does not represent a 2nd order phase transition, and that the phase transition of $BaFe_2(As_{1-x}P_x)_2$ into the orthorhombic phase does occur at $T_S$.

Comprehensive Control of Optical Polarization Anisotropy in Semiconducting Nanowires

The demonstration of strong photoluminescence polarization anisotropy in semiconducting nanowires embodies both technological promise and scientific challenge. Here we present progress on both fronts through the study of the photoluminescence polarization anisotropy of randomly oriented nanowire ensembles in materials without/with crystalline anisotropy, small/wide bandgap, and both III-V/II-VI chemistry (InP/ZnO nanowires, respectively). Comprehensive control of the polarization anisotropy is realized by dielectric matching with conformally deposited Ta2O5 (dielectric ratios of 9.6:4.41 and 4.0:4.41 for InP and ZnO, respectively). After dielectric matching, the polarization anisotropy of the nanowire ensembles is reduced by 86% for InP:Ta2O5 and 84% for ZnO:Ta2O5.

Electrical spin injection from an organic-based ferrimagnet in a hybrid organic/inorganic heterostructure

We report the successful extraction of spin polarized current from the organic-based room temperature ferrimagnetic semiconductor V[TCNE]x (x~2, TCNE: tetracyanoethylene; TC ~ 400 K, EG ~ 0.5 eV, s ~ 10-2 S/cm) and its subsequent injection into a GaAs/AlGaAs light-emitting diode (LED). The spin current tracks the magnetization of V[TCNE]x~2, is weakly temperature dependent, and exhibits heavy hole / light hole asymmetry. This result has implications for room temperature spintronics and the use of inorganic materials to probe spin physics in organic and molecular systems.

Precision Microwave Electrodynamic Measurements of K- and Co-doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$

We have studied the microwave electrodynamics of single crystal iron-based superconductors Ba$_{0.72}$K$_{0.28}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ (hole-doped, $T_\mathrm{c}$ $\approx $30 K) and Ba(Fe$_{0.95}$Co$_{0.05}$)$_2$As$_2$ (electron-doped, $T_\mathrm{c}$ $\approx$20 K), by cavity perturbation and broadband spectroscopy. SQUID magnetometry was used to confirm the quality and homogeneity of the samples under study. Through cavity perturbation techniques, the temperature dependence of the in-plane London penetration depth $Δλ(T)$, and therefore the superfluid phase stiffness $λ^2(0)/λ^2(T)$ was measured. Down to 0.4 K, the data do not show the exponential saturation at low temperatures expected from a singly-, fully-gapped superconductor. Rather, both the electron- and the hole-doped systems seem to be best described by a power law behavior, with $λ^2(0)/λ^2(T)$ $\sim$ $T^n$ and \emph{n} $\approx$ 2.5. In the three samples we studied, a weak feature near the sensitivity limit of our measurements appears near $T/T_\mathrm{c}$ =~0.04, hinting at a corresponding low energy feature in the superconducting density of states. The data can also be relatively well-described by a simple two-gap s-wave model of the order parameter, but this yields parameters which seem unrealistic and dependent on the fit range. Broadband surface resistance measurements reveal a sample dependent residual loss whose origin is unclear. The data from the \FeAs samples can be made to scale as $ω^2$ if the extrinsic loss is treated as an additive component, indicating large scattering rates. Finally, the temperature dependence of the surface resistance at 13 GHz obeys a power law very similar to those observed for $Δλ(T)$.

Flux dynamics and vortex phase diagram in $Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_x)_2As_2$ single crystals revealed by magnetization and its relaxation

Magnetization and its relaxation have been measured in $Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_x)_2As_2$ single crystals at various doping levels ranging fromvery underdoped to very overdoped regimes. Sizable magnetization relaxation rate has been observed in all samples, indicating a moderate vortex motion and relatively small characteristic pinning energy. Detailed analysis leads to the following conclusions: (1) A prominent second-peak (SP) effect was observed in the samples around the optimal doping level (x $\approx$ 0.08), but it becomes invisible or very weak in the very underdoped and overdoped samples; (2) The magnetization relaxation rate is inversely related to the transient superconducting current density revealing the non-monotonic field and temperature dependence through the SP region; (3) A very sharp magnetization peak was observed near zero field which corresponds to a much reduced relaxation rate; (4) A weak temperature dependence of relaxation rate or a plateau was found in the intermediate temperature region. Together with the treatment of the Generalized-Inversion-Scheme, we suggest that the vortex dynamics is describable by the collective pinning model. Finally, vortex phase diagrams were drawn for all the samples showing a systematic evolution of vortex dynamics.

Impurity Scattering Effect on Superconductivity and the Violation of Anderson Theorem in Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_x)_2As_2 Single Crystals

Low-temperature specific heat (SH) and resistivity were measured on Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_x)_2As_2 single crystals in wide doping region. A sizeable residual specific heat coefficient γ_0 was observed in the low temperature limit of all samples. The specific heat jump near T_c, i.e. ΔC/T|_{T_c} and the upper critical field H_{c2}^c (H||c) were also determined. It is found that -γ_0, ΔC/T|_{T_c}, \sqrt{H_{c2}^c} and T_c all shared a similar evolution with doping. All these can be well understood within the model of S$^\pm$ pairing symmetry when accounting the Co-dopants as unitary scattering centers in the FeAs planes. Our results give a direct evidence for the violation of the Anderson theorem in FeAs-based superconductors.

Role of multiband effects and electron-hole asymmetry in the superconductivity and normal state properties of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$

We report a systematic investigation, together with a theoretical analysis, of the resistivity and Hall effect in single crystals of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$, over a wide doping range. We find a surprisingly great disparity between the relaxation rates of the holes and the electrons, in excess of an order of magnitude in the low-doping, low-temperature regime. The ratio of the electron to hole mobilities diminishes with temperature and doping (away from the magnetically ordered state) and becomes more conventional. We also find a straightforward explanation of the large asymmetry (compared to cuprates) of the superconducting dome: in the underdoped regime the decisive factor is the competition between AF and superconductivity (SC), while in the overdoped regime the main role is played by degradation of the nesting that weakens the pairing interaction. Our results indicate that spin-fluctuations due to interband electron-hole scattering play a crucial role not only in the superconducting pairing, but also in the normal transport.

Specific-Heat Measurement of Residual Superconductivity in the Normal State of Underdoped Cuprate Superconductors

We have measured the magnetic field and temperature dependence of specific heat on $Bi_2Sr_{2-x}La_xCuO_{6+δ}$ single crystals in wide doping and temperature regions. The superconductivity related specific heat coefficient $γ_{sc}$ and entropy $S_{sc}$ are determined. It is found that $γ_{sc}$ has a hump-like anomaly at $T_c$ and behaves as a long tail which persists far into the normal state for the underdoped samples, but for the heavily overdoped samples the anomaly ends sharply just near $T_c$. Interestingly, we found that the entropy associated with superconductivity is roughly conserved when and only the long tail part in the normal state is taken into account for the underdoped samples, indicating the residual superconductivity above T$_c$.

Superconductivity and phase diagrams in 4d- and 5d-metal-doped iron arsenides SrFe_{2-x}M_xAs_2 (M = Rh, Ir, Pd)

By substituting the Fe with the 4d and 5d-transition metals Rh, Ir and Pd in SrFe_2As_2, we have successfully synthesized a series of superconductors SrFe_{2-x}M_xAs_2 (M = Rh, Ir and Pd) and explored the phase diagrams of them. The systematic evolution of the lattice constants indicated that part of the Fe ions were successfully replaced by the transition metals Rh, Ir and Pd. By increasing the doping content of Rh, Ir and Pd, the antiferromagnetic state of the parent phase is suppressed progressively and superconductivity is induced. The general phase diagrams were obtained and found to be similar to the case of doping Co and Ni to the Fe sites. However, the detailed structure of the phase diagram, in terms of how fast to suppress the antiferromagnetic order and induce the superconductivity, varies from one kind of doped element to another. Regarding the close values of the maximum superconducting transition temperatures in doping Co, Rh and Ir which locate actually in the same column in the periodic table of elements but have very different masses, we argue that the superconductivity is intimately related to the suppression of the AF order, rather than the electron-phonon coupling.

Superconductivity at 22.3 K in SrFe2-xIrxAs2

By substituting the Fe with the 5d-transition metal Ir in SrFe2As2, we have successfully synthesized the superconductor SrFe2-xIrxAs2 with Tc = 22.3 K at x = 0.5. X-ray diffraction indicates that the material has formed the ThCr2Si2-type structure with a space group I4/mmm. The temperature dependence of resistivity and dc magnetization both reveal sharp superconducting transitions at around 22 K. An estimate on the diamagnetization signal reveals a high Meissner shielding volume. Interestingly, the normal state resistivity exhibits a roughly linear behavior up to 300 K. The superconducting transitions at different magnetic fields were also measured yielding a slope of -dHc2/dT = 3.8 T/K near Tc. Using the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg (WHH) formula, the upper critical field at zero K is found to be about 58 T. Counting the possible number of electrons doped into the system in SrFe2-xIrxAs2, we argue that the superconductivity in the Ir-doped system is different from the Co-doped case, which should add more ingredients to the underlying physics of the iron pnictide superconductors.

Doping Dependence of Superconductivity and Lattice Constants in Hole Doped $La_{1-x}Sr_xFeAsO$

By using solid state reaction method we have fabricated the hole doped $La_{1-x}Sr_xFeAsO$ superconductors with Sr content up to 0.13. It is found that the sharp anomaly at about 150 K and the low temperature upturn of resistivity are suppressed by doping holes into the parent phase. Interestingly both the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ and the lattice constants (a-axis and c-axis) increase monotonously with hole concentration, in sharp contrast with the electron doped side where the $T_c$ increases with a continuing shrinkage of the lattice constants either by dope more fluorine or oxygen vacancies into the system. Our data clearly illustrate that the superconductivity can be induced by doping holes via substituting the trivalent La with divalent Sr in the LaFeAsO system with single FeAs layer, and the $T_c$ in the present system exhibits a symmetric behavior at the electron and hole doped sides, as we reported previously.

Nodal Gap in Fe-Based Layered Superconductor LaO_0.9F_{0.1-delta}FeAs Probed by Specific Heat Measurements

We report the specific heat measurements on the newly discovered Fe-based layered superconductor LaO_0.9F_{0.1-delta}FeAs with the onset transition temperature T_c \approx 28 K. A nonlinear magnetic field dependence of the electronic specific heat coefficient gamma(H) has been found in the low temperature limit, which is consistent with the prediction for a nodal superconductor. The maximum gap value Delta_0 \approx 3.4$\pm$0.5 meV was derived by analyzing gamma(H) based on the d-wave model. We also detected the electronic specific heat difference between 9 T and 0 T in wide temperature region, a specific heat anomaly can be clearly observed near T_c. The Debye temperature of our sample was determined to be about 315.7 K. Our results suggest an unconventional mechanism for this new superconductor.

Synthesizing and characterization of hole doped nickel based superconductor (La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$)NiAsO

We report the synthesizing and characterization of the hole doped Ni-based superconductor ($La_{1-x}Sr_{x})NiAsO$. By substituting La with Sr, the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ is increased from 2.4 K of the parent phase $LaNiAsO$ to 3.7 K at the doping levels x= 0.1 - 0.2. The curve $T_c$ versus hole concentration shows a symmetric behavior as the electron doped samples $LaNiAs(O_{1-x}F_{x})$. The normal state resistivity in Ni-based samples shows a good metallic behavior and reveals the absence of spin density wave induced anomaly which appears in the Fe-based system at about 150 K. Hall effect measurements indicate that the electron conduction in the parent phase $LaNiAsO$ is dominated by electron-like charge carriers, while with more Sr doping, a hole-like band will emerge and finally prevail over the conduction, such a phenomenon reflects that the Fermi surface of $LaNiAsO$ comprises of electron pockets and hole pockets, thus the sign of charge carriers could be changed once the contribution of hole pockets overwhelms that of electron pockets. Magnetoresistance measurements and the violation of Kohler rule provide further proof that multiband effect dominate the normal state transport of ($La_{1-x}Sr_{x})NiAsO$.
