Global Maximal Regularity for Equations with Degenerate Weights

In this paper we are concerned with global maximal regularity estimates for elliptic equations with degenerate weights. We consider both the linear case and the non-linear case. We show that higher integrability of the gradients can be obtained by imposing a local small oscillation condition on the weight and a local small Lipschitz condition on the boundary of the domain. Our results are new in the linear and non-linear case. We show by example that the relation between the exponent of higher integrability and the smallness parameters is sharp even in the linear or the unweighted case.

A pointwise differential inequality and second-order regularity for nonlinear elliptic systems

A sharp pointwise differential inequality for vectorial second-order partial differential operators, with Uhlenbeck structure, is offered. As a consequence, optimal second-order regularity properties of solutions to nonlinear elliptic systems in domains in $\mathbb{R}^n$ are derived. Both local and global estimates are established. Minimal assumptions on the boundary of the domain are required for the latter. In the special case of the $p$-Laplace system, our conclusions broaden the range of the admissible values of the exponent $p$ previously known.

Elliptic Equations With Degenerate weights

We obtain new local Calderon-Zygmund estimates for elliptic equations with matrix-valued weights for linear as well as non-linear equations. We introduce a novel log-BMO condition on the weight M. In particular, we assume smallness of the logarithm of the matrix-valued weight in BMO. This allows to include degenerate, discontinuous weights. We provide examples that show the sharpness of the estimates in terms of the log-BMO-norm.

On the threshold condition for Dörfler marking

It is an open question if the threshold condition $θ< θ_\star$ for the Dörfler marking parameter is necessary to obtain optimal algebraic rates of adaptive finite element methods. We present a (non-PDE) example fitting into the common abstract convergence framework (axioms of adaptivity) and which is potentially converging with exponential rates. However, for Dörfler marking $θ> θ_\star$ the algebraic converges rate can be made arbitrarily small.

The parabolic p-Laplacian with fractional differentiability

We study the parabolic $p$-Laplacian system in a bounded domain. We deduce optimal convergence rates for the space-time discretization based on an implicit Euler scheme in time. Our estimates are expressed in terms of Nikolskii spaces and therefore cover situations when the (gradient of) the solution has only fractional derivatives in space and time. The main novelty is that, different to all previous results, we do not assume any coupling condition between the space and time resolution $h$ and $τ$. The theoretical error analysis is complemented by numerical experiments.

On the Trace Operator for Functions of Bounded $\mathbb{A}$-Variation

In this paper, we consider the space $\mathrm{BV}^{\mathbb A}(Ω)$ of functions of bounded $\mathbb A$-variation. For a given first order linear homogeneous differential operator with constant coefficients $\mathbb A$, this is the space of $L^1$--functions $u:Ω\rightarrow\mathbb R^N$ such that the distributional differential expression $\mathbb A u$ is a finite (vectorial) Radon measure. We show that for Lipschitz domains $Ω\subset\mathbb R^{n}$, $\mathrm{BV}^{\mathbb A}(Ω)$-functions have an $L^1(\partialΩ)$-trace if and only if $\mathbb A$ is $\mathbb C$-elliptic (or, equivalently, if the kernel of $\mathbb A$ is finite dimensional). The existence of an $L^1(\partialΩ)$-trace was previously only known for the special cases that $\mathbb A u$ coincides either with the full or the symmetric gradient of the function $u$ (and hence covered the special cases $\mathrm{BV}$ or $\mathrm{BD}$). As a main novelty, we do not use the fundamental theorem of calculus to construct the trace operator (an approach which is only available in the $\mathrm{BV}$- and $\mathrm{BD}$-setting) but rather compare projections onto the nullspace as we approach the boundary. As a sample application, we study the Dirichlet problem for quasiconvex variational functionals with linear growth depending on $\mathbb A u$.

Existence, uniqueness and optimal regularity results for very weak solutions to nonlinear elliptic systems

We establish existence, uniqueness and optimal regularity results for very weak solutions to certain nonlinear elliptic boundary value problems. We introduce structural asymptotic assumptions of Uhlenbeck type on the nonlinearity, which are sufficient and in many cases also necessary for building such a theory. We provide a unified approach that leads qualitatively to the same theory as that one available for linear elliptic problems with continuous coeffcients, e.g. the Poisson equation. The result is based on several novel tools that are of independent interest: local and global estimates for (non)linear elliptic systems in weighted Lebesgue spaces with Muckenhoupt weights, a generalization of the celebrated div{curl lemma for identification of a weak limit in border line spaces and the introduction of a Lipschitz approximation that is stable in weighted Sobolev spaces.

The inverse of the divergence operator on perforated domains with applications to homogenization problems for the compressible Navier-Stokes system

We study the inverse of the divergence operator on a domain $Ω\subset R^3$ perforated by a system of tiny holes. We show that such inverse can be constructed on the Lebesgue space $L^p(Ω)$ for any $1< p < 3$, with a norm independent of perforation, provided the holes are suitably small and their mutual distance suitably large. Applications are given to problems arising in homogenization of steady compressible fluid flows.

Pointwise Calderón-Zygmund gradient estimates for the $p$-Laplace system

Pointwise estimates for the gradient of solutions to the $p$-Laplace system with right-hand side in divergence form are established. They enable us to develop a nonlinear counterpart of the classical Calderón-Zygmund theory in terms of Calderón-Zygmund singular integrals, for the Laplacian. As a consequence, a flexible, comprehensive approach to gradient bounds for the $p$-Laplace system for a broad class of norms is derived. In particular, new gradient estimates are exhibited, and well-known results in customary function spaces are easily recovered.

Besov regularity of solutions to the p-Poisson equation

In this paper, we study the regularity of solutions to the $p$-Poisson equation for all $1<p<\infty$. In particular, we are interested in smoothness estimates in the adaptivity scale $ B^σ_τ(L_τ(Ω))$, $1/τ= σ/d+1/p$, of Besov spaces. The regularity in this scale determines the order of approximation that can be achieved by adaptive and other nonlinear approximation methods. It turns out that, especially for solutions to $p$-Poisson equations with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions on bounded polygonal domains, the Besov regularity is significantly higher than the Sobolev regularity which justifies the use of adaptive algorithms. This type of results is obtained by combining local Hölder with global Sobolev estimates. In particular, we prove that intersections of locally weighted Hölder spaces and Sobolev spaces can be continuously embedded into the specific scale of Besov spaces we are interested in. The proof of this embedding result is based on wavelet characterizations of Besov spaces.

Existence of Weak Solutions for a Diffuse Interface Model of Non-Newtonian Two-Phase Flows

We consider a phase field model for the flow of two partly miscible incompressible, viscous fluids of Non-Newtonian (power law) type. In the model it is assumed that the densities of the fluids are equal. We prove existence of weak solutions for general initial data and arbitrarily large times with the aid of a parabolic Lipschitz truncation method, which preserves solenoidal velocity fields and was recently developed by Breit, Diening, and Schwarzacher.

Finite element approximation of steady flows of incompressible fluids with implicit power-law-like rheology

We develop the analysis of finite element approximations of implicit power-law-like models for viscous incompressible fluids. The Cauchy stress and the symmetric part of the velocity gradient in the class of models under consideration are related by a, possibly multi--valued, maximal monotone $r$-graph, with $1<r<\infty$. Using a variety of weak compactness techniques, including Chacon's biting lemma and Young measures, we show that a subsequence of the sequence of finite element solutions converges to a weak solution of the problem as the finite element discretization parameter $h$ tends to 0. A key new technical tool in our analysis is a finite element counterpart of the Acerbi--Fusco Lipschitz truncation of Sobolev functions.

Global gradient estimates for the $p(\cdot)$-Laplacian

We consider Calderón-Zygmund type estimates for the non-homogeneous $p(\cdot)$-Laplacian system $ -\text{div}(|D u|^{p(\cdot)-2} Du) = -\text{div}(|G|^{p(\cdot)-2} G),$ where $p$ is a variable exponent. We show that $|G|^{p(\cdot)} \in L^q(\mathbb{R}^n)$ implies $|D u|^{p(\cdot)} \in L^q(\mathbb{R}^n)$ for any $q \geq 1$. We also prove local estimates independent of the size of the domain and introduce new techniques to variable analysis.

Optimal error estimate for semi-implicit space-time discretization for the equations describing incompressible generalized Newtonian fluids

In this paper we study the numerical error arising in the space-time approximation of unsteady generalized Newtonian fluids which possess a stress-tensor with $(p,δ)$-structure. A semi-implicit time-discretization scheme coupled with conforming inf-sup stable finite element space discretization is analyzed. The main result, which improves previous suboptimal estimates as those in [A. Prohl, and M. Ruzicka, SIAM J. Numer. Anal., 39 (2001), pp. 214--249] is the optimal $O(k+h)$ error-estimate valid in the range $p\in (3/2,2]$, where $k$ and $h$ are the time-step and the mesh-size, respectively. Our results hold in three-dimensional domains (with periodic boundary conditions) and are uniform with respect to the degeneracy parameter $\in [0,δ_0]$ of the extra stress tensor.

Campanato estimates for the generalized Stokes System

We study interior regularity of solutions of a generalized stationary Stokes problem in the plane. The main, elliptic part of the problem is given in the form div(A(Du)), where D is the symmetric part of the gradient. The model case is A(Du)=(kappa+|Du|)^{p-2}Du. We show optimal BMO and Campanato estimates for A(Du). Some corollaries for the generalized stationary Navier-Stokes system and for its evolutionary variant are also mentioned.
