Martingale solutions in stochastic fluid-structure interaction

We consider a viscous incompressible fluid interacting with a linearly elastic shell of Koiter type which is located at some part of the boundary. Recently models with stochastic perturbation in the shell equation have been proposed in the literature but only analysed in simplified cases. We investigate the full model with transport noise, where (a part of) the boundary of the fluid domain is randomly moving in time. We prove the existence of a weak martingale solution to the underlying system.

Numerical analysis of 2D Navier--Stokes equations with additive stochastic forcing

We propose and study a temporal, and spatio-temporal discretisation of the 2D stochastic Navier--Stokes equations in bounded domains supplemented with no-slip boundary conditions. Considering additive noise, we base its construction on the related nonlinear random PDE, which is solved by a transform of the solution of the stochastic Navier--Stokes equations. We show strong rate (up to) $1$ in probability for a corresponding discretisation in space and time (and space-time). Convergence of order (up to) 1 in time was previously only known for linear SPDEs.

Stationary solutions in thermodynamics of stochastically forced fluids

We study the full Navier--Stokes--Fourier system governing the motion of a general viscous, heat-conducting, and compressible fluid subject to stochastic perturbation. The system is supplemented with non-homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions for the temperature and hence energetically open. We show that, in contrast with the energetically closed system, there exists a stationary solution. Our approach is based on new global-in-time estimates which rely on the non-homogeneous boundary conditions combined with estimates for the pressure.

Local well-posedness of the compressible FENE dumbbell model of Warner type

We consider a dilute suspension of dumbbells joined by a finitely extendible nonlinear elastic (FENE) connector evolving under the classical Warner potential $U(s)=-\frac{b}{2} \log(1-\frac{2s}{b})$, $s\in[0,\frac{b}{2})$. The solvent under consideration is modelled by the compressible Navier--Stokes system defined on the torus $\mathbb{T}^d$ with $d=2,3$ coupled with the Fokker--Planck equation (Kolmogorov forward equation) for the probability density function of the dumbbell configuration. We prove the existence of a unique local-in-time solution to the coupled system where this solution is smooth in the spacetime variables and interpreted weakly in the elongation variable. Our result holds true independently of whether or not the centre-of-mass diffusion term is incorporated in the Fokker--Planck equation.

On the existence of weak solutions for the steady Baldwin-Lomax model and generalizations

In this paper we consider the steady Baldwin-Lomax model, which is a rotational model proposed to describe turbulent flows at statistical equilibrium. The Baldwin-Lomax model is specifically designed to address the problem of a turbulent motion taking place in a bounded domain, with Dirichlet boundary conditions at solid boundaries. The main features of this model are the degeneracy of the operator at the boundary and a formulation in velocity/vorticity variables. The principal part of the operator is non-linear and it is degenerate, due to the presence (as a coefficient) of a power of the distance from the boundary: This fact makes the existence theory naturally set in the framework of appropriate weighted-Sobolev spaces.

The parabolic p-Laplacian with fractional differentiability

We study the parabolic $p$-Laplacian system in a bounded domain. We deduce optimal convergence rates for the space-time discretization based on an implicit Euler scheme in time. Our estimates are expressed in terms of Nikolskii spaces and therefore cover situations when the (gradient of) the solution has only fractional derivatives in space and time. The main novelty is that, different to all previous results, we do not assume any coupling condition between the space and time resolution $h$ and $τ$. The theoretical error analysis is complemented by numerical experiments.

Dissipative solutions and semiflow selection for the complete Euler system

To circumvent the ill-posedness issues present in various models of continuum fluid mechanics, we present a dynamical systems approach aiming at selection of physically relevant solutions. Even under the presence of infinitely many solutions to the full Euler system describing the motion of a compressible inviscid fluid, our approach permits to select a system of solutions (one trajectory for every initial condition) satisfying the classical semiflow property. Moreover, the selection respects the well accepted admissibility criteria for physical solutions, namely, maximization of the entropy production rate and the weak--strong uniqueness principle. Consequently, strong solutions are always selected whenever they exist and stationary states are stable and included in the selection as well. To this end, we introduce a notion of dissipative solution, which is given by a triple of density, momentum and total entropy defined as expectations of a suitable measure--valued solution.

On the Trace Operator for Functions of Bounded $\mathbb{A}$-Variation

In this paper, we consider the space $\mathrm{BV}^{\mathbb A}(Ω)$ of functions of bounded $\mathbb A$-variation. For a given first order linear homogeneous differential operator with constant coefficients $\mathbb A$, this is the space of $L^1$--functions $u:Ω\rightarrow\mathbb R^N$ such that the distributional differential expression $\mathbb A u$ is a finite (vectorial) Radon measure. We show that for Lipschitz domains $Ω\subset\mathbb R^{n}$, $\mathrm{BV}^{\mathbb A}(Ω)$-functions have an $L^1(\partialΩ)$-trace if and only if $\mathbb A$ is $\mathbb C$-elliptic (or, equivalently, if the kernel of $\mathbb A$ is finite dimensional). The existence of an $L^1(\partialΩ)$-trace was previously only known for the special cases that $\mathbb A u$ coincides either with the full or the symmetric gradient of the function $u$ (and hence covered the special cases $\mathrm{BV}$ or $\mathrm{BD}$). As a main novelty, we do not use the fundamental theorem of calculus to construct the trace operator (an approach which is only available in the $\mathrm{BV}$- and $\mathrm{BD}$-setting) but rather compare projections onto the nullspace as we approach the boundary. As a sample application, we study the Dirichlet problem for quasiconvex variational functionals with linear growth depending on $\mathbb A u$.

On solvability and ill-posedness of the compressible Euler system subject to stochastic forces

We consider the (barotropic) Euler system describing the motion of a compressible inviscid fluid driven by a stochastic forcing. Adapting the method of convex integration we show that the initial value problem is ill-posed in the class of weak (distributional) solutions. Specifically, we find a sequence $τ_M \to \infty$ of positive stopping times for which the Euler system admits infinitely many solutions originating from the same initial data. The solutions are weak in the PDE sense but strong in the probabilistic sense, meaning, they are defined on an {\it a priori} given stochastic basis and adapted to the driving stochastic process.

A variational approach to solitary gravity-capillary interfacial waves with infinite depth

We present an existence and stability theory for gravity-capillary solitary waves on the top surface of and interface between two perfect fluids of different densities, the lower one being of infinite depth. Exploiting a classical variational principle, we prove the existence of a minimiser of the wave energy $\mathcal{E}$ subject to the constraint $\mathcal{I}=2μ$, where $\mathcal{I}$ is the wave momentum and $0< μ< μ_0$, where $μ_0$ is chosen small enough for the validity of our calculations. Since $\mathcal{E}$ and $\mathcal{I}$ are both conserved quantities a standard argument asserts the stability of the set $D_μ$ of minimisers: solutions starting near $D_μ$ remain close to $D_μ$ in a suitably defined energy space over their interval of existence. The solitary waves which we construct are of small amplitude and are to leading order described by the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation. They exist in a parameter region in which the `slow' branch of the dispersion relation has a strict non-degenerate global minimum and the corresponding nonlinear Schrödinger equation is of focussing type. We show that the waves detected by our variational method converge (after an appropriate rescaling) to solutions of the model equation as $μ\downarrow 0$.

Incompressible limit for compressible fluids with stochastic forcing

We study the asymptotic behavior of the isentropic Navier-Stokes system driven by a multiplicative stochastic forcing in the compressible regime, where the Mach number approaches zero. Our approach is based on the recently developed concept of weak martingale solution to the primitive system, uniform bounds derived from a stochastic analogue of the modulated energy inequality, and careful analysis of acoustic waves. A stochastic incompressible Navier-Stokes system is identified as the limit problem.

Local strong solutions to the stochastic compressible Navier-Stokes system

We study the Navier-Stokes system describing the motion of a compressible viscous fluid driven by a nonlinear multiplicative stochastic force. We establish local in time existence (up to a positive stopping time) of a unique solution, which is strong in both PDE and probabilistic sense. Our approach relies on rewriting the problem as a symmetric hyperbolic system augmented by partial diffusion, which is solved via a suitable approximation procedure using the stochastic compactness method and the Yamada-Watanabe type argument based on the Gyöngy-Krylov characterization of convergence in probability. This leads to the existence of a strong (in the PDE sense) pathwise solution. Finally, we use various stopping time arguments to establish the local existence of a unique strong solution to the original problem.

Regularity theory for nonlinear systems of SPDEs

We consider systems of stochastic evolutionary equations of the type $$du=\mathrm{div}\,S(\nabla u)\,dt+Φ(u)dW_t$$ where $S$ is a non-linear operator, for instance the $p$-Laplacian $$S(ξ)=(1+|ξ|)^{p-2}ξ,\quad ξ\in\mathbb R^{d\times D},$$ with $p\in(1,\infty)$ and $Φ$ grows linearly. We extend known results about the deterministic problem to the stochastic situation. First we verify the natural regularity: $$\mathbb E\bigg[\sup_{t\in(0,T)}\int_{G'}|\nabla u(t)|^2\,dx+\int_0^T\int_{G'}|\nabla F(\nabla u)|^2\,dx\,dt\bigg]<\infty,$$ where $F(ξ)=(1+|ξ|)^{\frac{p-2}{2}}ξ$. If we have Uhlenbeck-structure then $\mathbb E\big[\|\nabla u\|_q^q\big]$ is finite for all $q<\infty$.

The A-Stokes approximation for non-stationary problems

Let $\mathcal A$ be an elliptic tensor. A function $v\in L^1(I;LD_{div}(B))$ is a solution to the non-stationary $\mathcal A $-Stokes problem iff \begin{align}\label{abs} \int_Q v\cdot\partial_tϕ\,dx\,dt-\int_Q \mathcal A(\varepsilon(v),\varepsilon(ϕ))\,dx\,dt=0\quad\forallϕ\in C^{\infty}_{0,div}(Q), \end{align} where $Q:=I\times B$, $B\subset\mathbb R^d$ bounded. If the l.h.s. is not zero but small we talk about almost solutions. We present an approximation result in the fashion of the $\mathcal A$-caloric approximation for the non-stationary $\mathcal A $-Stokes problem. Precisely, we show that every almost solution $v\in L^p(I;W^{1,p}_{div}(B))$, $1<p<\infty$, can be approximated by a solution in the $L^s(I;W^{1,s}(B))$-sense for all $s<p$. So, we extend the stationary $\mathcal A$-Stokes approximation by Breit-Diening-Fuchs to parabolic problems.

Weak Solutions for a Non-Newtonian Diffuse Interface Model with Different Densities

We consider weak solutions for a diffuse interface model of two non-Newtonian viscous, incompressible fluids of power-law type in the case of different densities in a bounded, sufficiently smooth domain. This leads to a coupled system of a nonhomogenouos generalized Navier-Stokes system and a Cahn-Hilliard equation. For the Cahn-Hilliard part a smooth free energy density and a constant, positive mobility is assumed. Using the $L^\infty$-truncation method we prove existence of weak solutions for a power-law exponent $p>\frac{2d+2}{d+2}$, $d=2,3$.

Compressible fluids driven by stochastic forcing: The relative energy inequality and applications

We show the relative energy inequality for the compressible Navier-Stokes system driven by a stochastic forcing. As a corollary, we prove the weak-strong uniqueness property (pathwise and in law) and convergence of weak solutions in the inviscid-incompressible limit. In particular, we establish a Yamada-Watanabe type result in the context of the compressible Navier-Stokes system, that is, pathwise weak--strong uniqueness implies weak--strong uniqueness in law.

On time regularity of stochastic evolution equations with monotone coefficients

We report on a time regularity result for stochastic evolutionary PDEs with monotone coefficients. If the diffusion coefficient is bounded in time without additional space regularity we obtain a fractional Sobolev type time regularity of order up to $\tfrac{1}{2}$ for a certain functional $ G( u )$ of the solution. Namely, $ G( u )=\nabla u $ in the case of the heat equation and $G( u )=|\nabla u |^{\frac{p-2}{2}}\nabla u $ for the $p$-Laplacian. The motivation is twofold. On the one hand, it turns out that this is the natural time regularity result that allows to establish the optimal rates of convergence for numerical schemes based on a time discretization. On the other hand, in the linear case, i.e. where the solution is given by a stochastic convolution, our result complements the known stochastic maximal space-time regularity results for the borderline case not covered by other methods.

Pointwise Calderón-Zygmund gradient estimates for the $p$-Laplace system

Pointwise estimates for the gradient of solutions to the $p$-Laplace system with right-hand side in divergence form are established. They enable us to develop a nonlinear counterpart of the classical Calderón-Zygmund theory in terms of Calderón-Zygmund singular integrals, for the Laplacian. As a consequence, a flexible, comprehensive approach to gradient bounds for the $p$-Laplace system for a broad class of norms is derived. In particular, new gradient estimates are exhibited, and well-known results in customary function spaces are easily recovered.

Stochastic Navier-Stokes equations for compressible fluids

We study the Navier-Stokes equations governing the motion of isentropic compressible fluid in three dimensions driven by a multiplicative stochastic forcing. In particular, we consider a stochastic perturbation of the system as a function of momentum and density, which is affine linear in momentum and satisfies suitable growth assumptions with respect to density, and establish existence of the so-called finite energy weak martingale solution under the condition that the adiabatic constant satisfies $γ>3/2$. The proof is based on a four layer approximation scheme together with a refined stochastic compactness method and a careful identification of the limit procedure.

Negative Orlicz-Sobolev norms and strongly nonlinear systems in fluid mechanics

We prove a version of the negative norm theorem in Orlicz-Sobolev spaces. A study of continuity properties of the Bogovskii -operator between Orlicz spaces is a crucial step, of independent interest, in our approach. Applications to the problem of pressure reconstruction for Non-Newtonian fluids governed by constitutive laws, which are not necessarily power type, are presented. A key inequality for a numerical analysis of the underlying elliptic system is also derived.
