Chiral-spin symmetry of the meson spectral function above $T_c$

Recently, via calculation of spatial correlators of $J=0,1$ isovector operators using a chirally symmetric Dirac operator within $N_F=2$ QCD, it has been found that QCD at temperatures $T_c - 3 T_c$ is approximately $SU(2)_{CS}$ and $SU(4)$ symmetric. The latter symmetry suggests that the physical degrees of freedom are chirally symmetric quarks bound by the chromoelectric field into color singlet objects without chromomagnetic effects. This regime of QCD has been referred to as a Stringy Fluid. Here we calculate correlators for propagation in time direction at a temperature slightly above $T_c$ and find the same approximate symmetries. This means that the meson spectral function is chiral-spin and $SU(4)$ symmetric.

Fluctuations of conserved charges, chiral spin symmetry and deconfinement in an SU(2)_color subgroup of SU(3)_color above T_c

Above a pseudocritical temperature of chiral symmetry restoration T_c the energy and the pressure are very far from the quark-gluon-plasma limit (i.e. ideal gas of free quarks and gluons). At the same time very soon above T_c fluctuations of conserved charges behave as if quarks were free particles. Within the T_c - 3T_c interval a chiral spin symmetry emerges in QCD which is not consistent with free quarks and suggests that degrees of freedom are chirally symmetric quarks bound into the color-singlet objects by the chromoelectric field. Here we analyse temporal and spatial correlators in this interval and demonstrate that they indicate simultaneously the chiral spin symmetry as well as absence of the interquark interactions in channels constrained by a current conservation. The latter channels are responsible for both fluctuations of conserved charges and for dileptons. Assuming that a SU(2)_color subgroup of SU(3)_color is deconfined soon above T_c but confinement persits in SU(3)_color/SU(2)_color in the interval T_c - 3T_c we are able to reconcile all empirical facts listed above.

Symmetries of the light hadron spectrum in high temperature QCD

Properties of QCD matter change significantly around the chiral crossover temperature, and the effects on $U(1)_A$ and topological susceptibilities, as well as the meson spectrum have been studied with much care. Baryons and the effect of parity doubling in this temperature range have been analyzed previously by various other groups employing different setups. Here we construct suitable operators to investigate chiral and axial $U(1)_A$ symmetries in the baryon spectrum. Measurements for different volumes and quark-masses are done with two flavors of chirally symmetric domain-wall fermions at temperatures above the critical one. The possibility of emergent $SU(4)$ and $SU(2)_{CS}$ symmetries is discussed.

The chiral magnetic effect and the chiral spin symmetry in QCD above Tc

The chiral magnetic effect (CME) is an exact statement that connects via the axial anomaly the electric current in a system consisting of interacting fermions and gauge field with chirality imbalance that is put into a strong external magnetic field. Experimental search of the magnetically induced current in QCD in heavy ion collisions above a pseudocritical temperature hints, though not yet conclusive, that the induced current is either small or vanishing. This would imply that the chirality imbalance in QCD above $T_c$ that could be generated via topological fluctuations is at most very small. Here we present the most general reason for absence (smallness) of the chirality imbalance in QCD above Tc. It was recently found on the lattice that QCD above Tc is approximately chiral spin (CS) symmetric with the symmetry breaking at the level of a few percent. The CS transformations mix the right- and left-handed components of quarks. Then an exact CS symmetry would require absence of any chirality imbalance. Consequently an approximate CS symmetry admits at most a very small chirality imbalance in QCD above Tc. Hence the absence or smallness of an magnetically induced current observed in heavy ion collisions could be considered as experimental evidence for emergence of the CS symmetry above Tc.

Angular momentum content of the $ρ(1450)$ from chiral lattice fermions

We identify the chiral and angular momentum content of the leading quark-antiquark Fock component for the $ρ(770)$ and $ρ(1450)$ mesons using a two-flavor lattice simulation with dynamical Overlap Dirac fermions. We extract this information from the overlap factors of two interpolating fields with different chiral structure and from the unitary transformation between chiral and angular momentum basis. For the chiral content of the mesons we find that the $ρ(770)$ slightly favors the $(1,0)\oplus(0,1)$ chiral representation and the $ρ(1450)$ slightly favors the $(1/2,1/2)_b$ chiral representation. In the angular momentum basis the $ρ(770)$ is then a $^3S_1$ state, in accordance with the quark model. The $ρ(1450)$ is a $^3D_1$ state, showing that the quark model wrongly assumes the $ρ(1450)$ to be a radial excitation of the $ρ(770)$.

No deconfinement in QCD ?

At a critical temperature QCD in the chiral limit undergoes a chiral restoration phase transition. Above the phase transition the quark condensate vanishes. The Banks-Casher relation connects the quark condensate to a density of the near-zero modes of the Dirac operator. In the Nambu-Goldstone mode the quasi-zero modes condense around zero, λ\rightarrow 0, and provide a nonvanishing quark condensate. The chiral restoration phase transition implies that above the critical temperature there is no any longer a condensation of the Dirac modes around zero. If a U(1)_A symmetry is also restored and a gap opens in the Dirac spectrum then the Euclidean correlation functions are SU(2N_f) \supset SU(N_f)_L \times SU(N_f)_R \times U(1)_A- symmetric. This symmetry implies that a free (deconfined) propagation of quarks in Minkowski space-time that perturbatively interact with unconfined gluons is impossible. This means that QCD above the critical temperature is not of a quark-gluon plasma origin and has a more complicated structure.

SU(2N_F) hidden symmetry of QCD

Recently a global SU(4) \supset SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R \times U(1)_A symmetry of the confining Coulombic part of the QCD Hamiltonian has been discovered with N_F=2. This global symmetry includes both independent rotations of the left- and right-handed quarks in the isospin space as well as the chiralspin rotations that mix the left- and right-handed components of the quark fields. It has been suggested by lattice simulations, however, that a symmetry of mesons in the light quark sector upon the quasi-zero mode truncation from the quark propagators is actually higher than SU(4), because the states from a singlet and a 15-plet irreducible representations of SU(4) are also degenerate. Here we demonstrate that classically QCD, ignoring irrelevant exact zero mode contributions, has a SU(2N_F) symmetry. If effects of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking and of anomaly are encoded in the same near-zero modes, then truncation of these modes should restore a classical SU(2N_F) symmetry. Then we show in a Lorentz- and gauge-invariant manner emergence of a bilocal SU(4) \times SU(4) symmetry in mesons that contains a global SU(4) as a subgroup upon truncation of the quasi-zero modes. We also demonstrate that the confining Coulombic part of the QCD Hamiltonian has this bilocal symmetry. It explains naturally a degeneracy of different irreducible representations of SU(4) observed in lattice simulations.

SU(2N_F) symmetry of QCD at high temperature and its implications

If above a critical temperature not only the SU(N_F)_L \times SU(N_F)_R chiral symmetry of QCD but also the U(1)_A symmetry is restored, then the actual symmetry of the QCD correlation functions and observables is SU(2N_F). Such a symmetry prohibits existence of deconfined quarks and gluons. Hence QCD at high temperature is also in the confining regime and elementary objects are SU(2N_F) symmetric "hadrons" with not yet known properties.

Can we decide whether QCD is confining or not at high temperature?

At high temperature measurements of the Polyakov loop suggest a deconfinement transition to the (strongly interacting) quark-gluon plasma. At the same time at the infinitely large temperature the four-dimensional QCD is reduced to the three-dimensional QCD that is confining. The Polyakov loop and related Z_3 symmetry are strict order parameters only for infinitely heavy quarks. In such a situation the SU(2)_CS and SU(4) symmetries of confinement in the light quark sector could be helpful to distinguish between the confining and deconfining phase in a regime where SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R and U(1)_A symmetries are manifest. In order to reveal a presence or absence of these symmetries one needs to measure and compare correlation functions related by these symmetry transformations.

Emergence of a new $SU(4)$ symmetry in the baryon spectrum

Recently a large degeneracy of $J=1$ mesons, that is larger than the $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R \times U(1)_A$ symmetry of the QCD Lagrangian, has been discovered upon truncation of the near-zero modes from the valence quark propagators. It has been found that this degeneracy represents the $SU(4)$ group that includes the chiral rotations as well as the mixing of left- and right-handed quarks. This symmetry group turns out to be a symmetry of confinement in QCD. Consequently, one expects that the same symmetry should persist upon the near-zero mode removal in other hadron sectors as well. It has been shown that indeed the $J=2$ mesons follow the same symmetry pattern upon the low-lying mode elimination. Here we demonstrate the $SU(4)$ symmetry of baryons once the near-zero modes are removed from the quark propagators. We also show a degeneracy of states belonging to different irreducible representations of $SU(4)$. This implies a larger symmetry, that includes $SU(4)$ as a subgroup.

Evidence for a new $SU(4)$ symmetry with $J=2$ mesons

Recently, a new symmetry of mesons has been found upon truncation of the quasi-zero modes of the Overlap Dirac operator in lattice simulations. Namely, the $ρ,ρ',ω,ω',a_1, b_1,h_1$ and possibly $f_1$ $J=1$ mesons get degenerate after removal of the quasi-zero modes. This emergent symmetry has been established to be $SU(4)\supset SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R \times U(1)_A$. It is higher than the symmetry of the QCD Lagrangian and provides not only a mixing of quarks of given chirality in the isospin space, but also the mixing of left-handed and right-handed components. Here we study, with the Overlap Dirac operator, the isovector $J=2$ mesons upon the quasi-zero mode reduction and observe a similar degeneracy. This result further supports the $SU(4)$ symmetry in mesons of given spin $J \geq 1$.

preprint2015arXiv

Exploring a new SU(4) symmetry of meson interpolators

In recent lattice calculations it has been discovered that mesons upon truncation of the quasi-zero modes of the Dirac operator obey a symmetry larger than the $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R\times U(1)_A$ symmetry of the QCD Lagrangian. This symmetry has been suggested to be $SU(4) \supset SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R\times U(1)_A$ that mixes not only the u- and d-quarks of a given chirality, but also the left- and right-handed components. Here it is demonstrated that bilinear $\overline{q}q$ interpolating fields of a given spin $J \geq 1$ transform into each other according to irreducible representations of $SU(4)$ or, in general, $SU(2N_F)$. This fact together with the coincidence of the correlation functions establishes $SU(4)$ as a symmetry of the $J \geq 1$ mesons upon quasi-zero mode reduction. It is shown that this symmetry is a symmetry of the confining instantaneous charge-charge interaction in QCD. Different subgroups of $SU(4)$ as well as the $SU(4)$ algebra are explored.

Isoscalar mesons upon unbreaking of chiral symmetry

In a dynamical lattice simulation with the overlap Dirac operator and $N_f=2$ mass degenerate quarks we study all possible $J=0$ and $J=1$ correlators upon exclusion of the low lying "quasi-zero" modes from the valence quark propagators. After subtraction of a small amount of such Dirac eigenmodes all disconnected contributions vanish and all possible point-to-point $J=0$ correlators with different quantum numbers become identical, signaling a restoration of the $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R \times U(1)_A$. The original ground state of the $π$ meson does not survive this truncation, however. In contrast, in the $I=0$ and $I=1$ channels for the $J=1$ correlators the ground states have a very clean exponential decay. All possible chiral multiplets for the $J=1$ mesons become degenerate, indicating a restoration of an $SU(4)$ symmetry of the dynamical QCD-like string.

SU(4) symmetry of the dynamical QCD string and genesis of hadron spectra

A large degeneracy of mesons of a given spin has recently been discovered upon reduction of the quasi-zero modes of the Dirac operator in a dynamical lattice simulation. Here a symmetry group that is responsible for this degeneracy is established, which is SU(4) \supset SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R \times U(1)_A \times C_i. It is argued that this symmetry group is a symmetry of the dynamical QCD string. Implications of this picture for a genesis of light hadron spectra are discussed.

Chiral symmetry breaking and the generation of light hadron masses

A quantitative study of the effects of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking on the mass generation of the low-lying hadrons in a dynamical lattice QCD simulation is presented. The evolution of light hadron masses upon increasing the number of low-lying Dirac operator eigenmodes in the quark propagators is confronted with the hadron masses obtained upon removal of such low-lying eigenmodes from standard full quark propagators. The low-lying chiral symmetry breaking modes provide roughly two third of the nucleon and $ρ$ masses, while the $a_1$ mass is affected to a much smaller degree.

Mesons upon low-lying Dirac mode exclusion

We study the isoscalar and isovector $J=0,1$ mesons with the overlap operator within two flavour lattice QCD. After subtraction of the lowest-lying Dirac eigenmodes from the valence quark propagator all disconnected contributions vanish and all possible point-to-point $J=0$ correlators become identical, signaling a simultaneous restoration of both $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$ and $U(1)_A$ symmetries. The ground states of the $π,σ,a_0,η$ mesons do not survive this truncation. All possible $J=1$ states have a very clean exponential decay and become degenerate, demonstrating a $SU(4)$ symmetry of a dynamical QCD-like string.

Observation of a dynamical QCD string

Mesons constructed from the quark propagators without the lowest-lying eigenmodes of the Dirac operator reveal not only restored SU(2)_L * SU(2)_R chiral and U(1)_A symmetries, but actually a higher symmetry. All possible chiral and U(1)_A multiplets for the states of the same spin are degenerate, i.e., the energy of the observed quantum levels does not depend on the spin orientation of quarks in the system and their parities. The quark-spin independence of the energy levels implies absence of the magnetic interactions in the system. The ultrarelativistic quark-antiquark system with only the color-electric interactions can be interpreted (or defined) as a dynamical QCD string.

Symmetries of mesons after unbreaking of chiral symmetry and their string interpretation

Using the chirally invariant overlap Dirac operator we remove its lowest-lying quasizero modes from the valence quark propagators and study evolution of isovector mesons with J=1. At the truncation level about 50 MeV SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R and U(1)_A symmetries get restored. However, we observe a degeneracy not only within the chiral and U(1)_A multiplets, but also a degeneracy of all possible chiral multiplets, i.e., the observed quantum levels have a symmetry larger than U(2)_L \times U(2)_R and their energy does not depend on the spin orientation of quarks and their parities. We offer a possible interpretation of these energy levels as the quantum levels of the dynamical QCD string. The structure of the radial J=1 spectrum is compatible with E =(n_r +1)\hbarωwith \hbarω= 900 \pm 70 MeV.

Effect of Transverse Gluons on Chiral Restoration in Excited Mesons

The effect of transverse gluons on the chiral symmetry patterns of excited mesons is studied in a Coulomb gauge QCD model. The linear rising static quark-antiquark potential and the transverse gluon propagator known from lattice studies are input into the model. The non-perturbative quark propagator, which enters the meson bound state equations, is derived from the Dyson--Schwinger equations and a complete set of mesons for general spin quantum number is presented. From analyzing the bound state equations for large spins it is demonstrated, that chiral and axial symmetry are restored. In this limit a complete degeneracy of all multiplets with given spin is observed. The effect of the transverse gluon interaction is shown to vanish rapidly as the spin quantum number is increased. For vanishing dynamical quark mass the expected meson degeneracies are recovered.

Effects of Low vs. High Fermionic Modes on Hadron Mass Generation

A nonvanishing spectral density of the low-lying eigenmodes of the Dirac operator naturally is a signal for dynamical chiral symmetry breaking (D$χ$SB) via the Banks-Casher relation. The low-lying eigenmodes alone saturate the pseudoscalar channel and the corresponding propagator successfully reproduces the pion mass. In this paper we investigate the effects on the mass generation of hadrons other than pions. The evolution of these masses upon inclusion of an increasing number of the low-lying eigenmodes is confronted with the hadron mass spectrum upon removal of such eigenmodes.

preprint2013arXiv

More effects of Dirac low-mode removal

In previous studies we have shown that hadrons, except for a pion, survive the removal of the lowest lying Dirac eigenmodes from the valence quark propagators. The low-modes are tied to the dynamical breaking of chiral symmetry and we found chiral symmetry to be restored by means of matching masses of chiral partners, like, e.g., the vector and axial vector currents. Here we investigate the influence of removing the lowest part of the Dirac spectrum on the locality of the Dirac operator. Moreover, we analyze the influence of low-mode truncation on the quark momenta and thereupon on the hadron spectrum and, finally, introduce a reweighting scheme to extend the truncation to the sea quark sector.

Axial charges of excited nucleons from CI-fermions

We report lattice QCD results on the axial charges of ground and excited nucleon states of both parities. This is the first study of these quantities with approximately chiral (CI) fermions. Two energy levels in the range of the negative parity resonances N*(1535) and N*(1650) are observed and we determine the axial charge for both. We obtain a small axial charge for one of them, which is consistent with the chiral symmetry restoration in this state as well as with the small axial charge of the N*(1535) predicted within the quark model. This result agrees with the findings of Takahashi et al. obtained with Wilson quarks which violate chiral symmetry for finite lattice spacing. At the same time for the other observed negative parity state we obtain a large axial charge, that is close to the axial charge of the nucleon. This is in disagreement both with the quark model prediction as well as with the chiral restoration but allows for an interpretation as an s-wave π N state.

Confinement, chiral symmetry breaking and the mass generation of hadrons

A key question to QCD is what mechanism generates the hadron mass in the light quark sector, where both confinement and chiral symmetry breaking are in the game. Are confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in the vacuum uniquely interconnected? Can hadrons survive chiral symmetry restoration? If yes, what happens with their mass and what symmetries beyond the chiral symmetry are there? We review our recent insights. In particular, in a dynamical lattice simulation we artificially restore chiral symmetry by removing the low-lying Dirac modes of the valence quark propagators, which is a well defined procedure and keep gluodynamics intact. Hadrons survive this artificial chiral restoration and their mass is surprisingly large. All hadrons fall into chiral multiplets and some of them are degenerate, i.e. the spectrum reveals some higher symmetry, that includes the chiral symmetry as a subgroup. The U(1)_A symmetry does not get restored after removal of the chiral modes from the valence quarks.

Effects of the low lying Dirac modes on excited hadrons in lattice QCD

Chiral symmetry breaking in Quantum Chromodynamics is associated with the low lying spectral modes of the Dirac operator according to the Banks-Casher relation. Here we study how removal of a variable number of low lying modes from the valence quark sector affects the masses of the ground states and first excited states of baryons and mesons in two flavor lattice QCD.

How Chiral Symmetry Breaking Affects the Spectrum of the Light-Heavy Mesons in the 't Hooft Model

We find the spectrum and wave functions of the heavy-light mesons in $(1 + 1)$-dimensional QCD in the 't Hooft limit, both in the rest frame, using the Coulomb (axial) gauge, and on the light cone. Our emphasis is on the effects of chiral symmetry breaking on the spectrum. While dynamical equations in both cases look different, the results for the spectrum are identical. The chiral symmetry breaking is clearly seen from the gap and Bethe--Salpeter equations in the laboratory frame. At the same time, while vacuum is trivial on the light cone (no chiral condensate), the effects of the spontaneous breaking of the chiral symmetry manifest themselves in the same way, as it follows from the coincidence of the spectra obtained from the laboratory-frame Bethe--Salpeter equation on the one hand, and the light-cone 't Hooft-type equation on the other.

Symmetries of hadrons after unbreaking the chiral symmetry

We study hadron correlators upon artificial restoration of the spontaneously broken chiral symmetry. In a dynamical lattice simulation we remove the lowest lying eigenmodes of the Dirac operator from the valence quark propagators and study evolution of the hadron masses obtained. All mesons and baryons in our study, except for a pion, survive unbreaking the chiral symmetry and their exponential decay signals become essentially better. From the analysis of the observed spectroscopic patterns we conclude that confinement still persists while the chiral symmetry is restored. All hadrons fall into different chiral multiplets. The broken U(1)_A symmetry does not get restored upon unbreaking the chiral symmetry. We also observe signals of some higher symmetry that includes chiral symmetry as a subgroup. Finally, from comparison of the Δ- N splitting before and after unbreaking of the chiral symmetry we conclude that both the color-magnetic and the flavor-spin quark-quark interactions are of equal importance.

Chiral symmetry breaking and the spin content of hadrons

From the parton distributions in the infinite momentum frame one finds that only about 30% of the nucleon spin is carried by spins of the valence quarks, which gave rise to the term "spin crisis". Similar results hold for the lowest mesons, as it follows from the lattice simulations. We define the spin content of a meson in the rest frame and use a complete and orthogonal $\bar q q$ chiral basis and a unitary transformation from the chiral basis to the (2S+1)LJ basis. Then, given a mixture of different allowed chiral representations in the meson wave function at a given resolution scale, one can obtain its spin content at this scale. To obtain the mixture of the chiral representations in the meson we measure in dynamical lattice simulations a ratio of couplings of interpolarors with different chiral structure. For the rho meson we obtain practically the 3S1 state with no trace of the spin crisis. Then a natural question arises: which definition does reflect the spin content of a hadron?

preprint2011arXiv

Chiral symmetry breaking and the spin content of the rho and rho' mesons

Using interpolators with different SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R transformation properties we study the chiral symmetry and spin contents of the rho- and rho'-mesons in lattice simulations with dynamical quarks. A ratio of couplings of the $\qbarγ^iτq$ and $\qbarσ^{0i}τq$ interpolators to a given meson state at different resolution scales tells one about the degree of chiral symmetry breaking in the meson wave function at these scales. Using a Gaussian gauge invariant smearing of the quark fields in the interpolators, we are able to extract the chiral content of mesons up to the infrared resolution of ~1 fm. In the ground state rho meson the chiral symmetry is strongly broken with comparable contributions of both the (0,1) + (1,0) and (1/2,1/2)_b chiral representations with the former being the leading contribution. In contrast, in the rho' meson the degree of chiral symmetry breaking is manifestly smaller and the leading representation is (1/2,1/2)_b. Using a unitary transformation from the chiral basis to the {2S +1}L_J basis, we are able to define and measure the angular momentum content of mesons in the rest frame. This definition is different from the traditional one which uses parton distributions in the infinite momentum frame. The rho meson is practically a 3S_1 state with no obvious trace of a "spin crisis". The rho' meson has a sizeable contribution of the 3D_1 wave, which implies that the rho' meson cannot be considered as a pure radial excitation of the rho meson.

Chirally symmetric and confining dense matter with a diffused quark Fermi surface

It is possible that at low temperatures and large density there exists a confining matter with restored chiral symmetry, just after the dense nuclear matter with broken chiral symmetry. Such a phase has sofar been studied within a confining and chirally symmetric model assuming a rigid quark Fermi surface. In the confining quarkyonic matter, however, near the Fermi surface quarks group into color-singlet baryons. Interaction between quarks leads to a diffusion of the quark Fermi surface. Here we study effects of such diffusion and verify that it does not destroy a possible existence of a confining but chirally symmetric matter at low temperatures.

Chiral and angular momentum content of mesons

First, we overview the present status of the effective chiral restoration in excited hadrons and an alternative explanation of the symmetry observed in the highly excited hadrons. Then we discuss a method how to define and measure in a gauge invariant manner the chiral and angular momentum content of mesons at different resolution scales, including the infrared scale, where mass is generated. We illustrate this method by presenting results on chiral and angular momentum content of rho and rho' mesons obtained in dynamical lattice simulations. The chiral symmetry is strongly broken in the rho(770) and neither the a_1(1260) nor the h_1(1170) can be considered as its chiral partners. Its angular momentum content in the infrared is approximately the 3S1 partial wave, in agreement with the quark model language. However, in its first excitation, rho(1450), the chiral symmetry breaking is much weaker and in the infrared this state belongs predominantly to the (1/2,1/2) chiral representation. This state is dominated in the infrared by the 3D1 partial wave and cannot be considered as the first radial excitation of the rho(770)-meson, in contrast to the quark model.

Confining but chirally symmetric dense and cold matter

The possibility for existence of cold, dense chirally symmetric matter with confinement is reviewed. The answer to this question crucially depends on the mechanism of mass generation in QCD and interconnection of confinement and chiral symmetry breaking. This question can be clarified from spectroscopy of hadrons and their axial properties. Almost systematical parity doubling of highly excited hadrons suggests that their mass is not related to chiral symmetry breaking in the vacuum and is approximately chirally symmetric. Then there is a possibility for existence of confining but chirally symmetric matter. We clarify a possible mechanism underlying such a phase at low temperatures and large density. Namely, at large density the Pauli blocking prevents the gap equation to generate a solution with broken chiral symmetry. However, the chirally symmetric part of the quark Green function as well as all color non-singlet quantities are still infrared divergent, meaning that the system is with confinement. A possible phase transition to such a matter is most probably of the first order. This is because there are no chiral partners to the lowest lying hadrons.

Effective chiral restoration in the rho'-meson in lattice QCD

In simulations with dynamical quarks it has been established that the ground state rho in the infrared is a strong mixture of the two chiral representations (0,1)+(1,0) and (1/2,1/2)_b. Its angular momentum content is approximately the 3S1 partial wave which is consistent with the quark model. Effective chiral restoration in an excited rho-meson would require that in the infrared this meson couples predominantly to one of the two representations. The variational method allows one to study the mixing of interpolators with different chiral transformation properties in the non-perturbatively determined excited state at different resolution scales. We present results for the first excited state of the rho-meson using simulations with n_f=2 dynamical quarks. We point out, that in the infrared a leading contribution to rho'= rho(1450) comes from (1/2,1/2)_b, in contrast to the rho. Its approximate chiral partner would be a h_1(1380) state. The rho' wave function contains a significant contribution of the 3D1 wave which is not consistent with the quark model prediction.

Some indication for a missing chiral partner eta_4 around 2 GeV

The high-lying mesons in the light quark sector previously obtained from the partial wave analysis of the proton-antiproton annihilation in flight at 1.9 - 2.4 GeV region at CERN reveal a very high degree of degeneracy. This degeneracy can be explained as due to an effective restoration of both SU(2)_L * SU(2)_R and U(1)_A symmetries combined with a principal quantum number n + J. In this case there must be chiral partners for the highest spin states in the 2 and 2.3 GeV bands presently missing in the data. Here we reanalyze the Crystal Barrel data and show an indication for existence of the missing $4^{-+}$ state around 2 GeV. This result calls for further experimental search of the missing states both in the proton-antiproton annihilation and in the production reactions.

The chiral and angular momentum content of the $ρ$-mesons in lattice QCD

The variational method allows one to study the mixing of interpolators with different chiral transformation properties in the nonperturbatively determined physical state. It is then possible to define and calculate in a gauge-invariant manner the chiral as well as the partial wave content of the quark-antiquark component of a meson in the infrared, where mass is generated. Using a unitary transformation from the chiral basis to the $^{2S+1}L_J$ basis one may extract the partial wave content of a meson. We present results for the $ρ$- and $ρ'$-mesons using a simulation with $N_f=2$ dynamical quarks, all for lattice spacings close to 0.15 fm. Our results indicate a strong chiral symmetry breaking in the $ρ$ state and its simple $^3S_1$-wave composition in the infrared. For the $ρ'$-meson we find a small chiral symmetry breaking in the infrared as well as a leading contribution of the $^3D_1$ partial wave, which is contradictory to the quark model.

Confined but chirally symmetric hadrons at large density and the Casher's argument

Casher's argument, which is believed to be quite general, states that in the confining regime chiral symmetry is necessarily broken. In the large-N_c limit and at moderate and low temperatures QCD is confining up to arbitrary large densities, and there should appear a quarkyonic matter. It has been demonstrated, within a manifestly confining and chirally symmetric model, which is a 3+1 dimensional generalization of the 't Hooft model, that, at zero temperature and at a density exceeding a critical one, the chiral symmetry is restored while quarks remain confined in color-singlet hadrons. This is in conflict with the Casher's argument. Here we explain the reason why the Casher's argument fails and clarify the physical mechanism lying behind such confined but chirally symmetric hadrons.

Parity doublets in the baryon spectrum

Physics of the low-lying and high-lying hadrons in the light flavors sector is reviewed. While the low-lying hadrons are strongly affected by both $U(1)_A$ and spontaneous $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$ breakings, in the high-lying hadrons these symmetries are restored. A manifestation is a persistence of the chiral multiplet structure in both baryon and meson spectra. A fundamental origin of this phenomenon is that effects of quantum fluctuations of both quark and gluon fields must vanish at large $n$ or $J$ and a semiclassical description becomes adequate. A relation between the chiral symmetry restoration and the string picture of excited hadrons is discussed.

$Θ^+$ in a chiral constituent quark model and its interpolating fields

The recently discovered pentaquark $Θ^+$ is described within the chiral constituent quark model. Within this picture the flavor-spin interaction between valence quarks inverts the $(1s)^4$ and $(1s)^3(1p)$ levels of the four-quark subsystem and consequently the lowest-lying pentaquark is a positive parity, I=0, J=1/2 state of the flavor antidecuplet, similar to the soliton model prediction. Contrary to the soliton model, however, the quark picture predicts its spin-orbit partner with $J=3/2$. Different interpolating fields intended for lattice calculations of $Θ^+$ are constructed, which have a maximal overlap with this baryon if it is indeed a quark excitation in the 5Q system.

SU(2)_L * SU(2)_R and U(1)_A restorations high in the hadron spectrum and what it tells us about

Recent data for highly excited mesons suggest that not only the chiral $SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R$ symmetry of QCD is restored high in the spectrum but also the $ U(1)_A$ symmetry. This means that it is not a confining interaction in QCD which triggers the spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry. The restoration of the $U(2)_L\times U(2)_R$ symmetry of the QCD Lagrangian implies the appearance of multiplets of this group high in the hadron spectra. Such type of multiplets is naturally explained within the string picture of confinement. It also supports the scenario that the $U(1)_A$ breaking is related to instantons and not to the gluonic interaction responsible for confinement.

Parity doublets and chiral symmetry restoration in baryon spectrum

It is argued that an appearance of the near parity doublets in the upper part of the light baryon spectrum is an evidence for the chiral symmetry restoration in the regime where a typical momentum of quarks is around the chiral symmetry restoration scale. At high enough baryon excitation energy the nontrivial gap solution, which signals the chiral symmetry breaking regime, disappears and the chiral symmetry should be restored. Thus one observes a phase transition in the upper part of the light baryon spectrum. The average kinetic energy of the constituent quarks in this region is just around the critical one $3T_c$.

Pionic Fluctuations of Constituent Quarks

Pion loop fluctuations of the constituent u and d quarks are shown to give only a minute contribution to the intrinsic charge radius of the neutron, under the assumption that the pion-quark coupling constant has its conventional value, with a cut-off scale of the order of 1.0 GeV. The contribution from the pion loops to the anomalous magnetic moment of the neutron represents a small ($\sim$ 12-14%) increase over of the static quark model value.

The Strangeness Magnetic Moment of the Proton in the Chiral Quark Model

The strangeness magnetic moment of the proton is shown to be small in the chiral quark model. The dominant loop contribution is due to kaons. The K^* loop contributions are proportional to the difference between the strange and light constituent quark masses or $m_{K^*}^{-2}$ and therefore small. The loop fluctuations that involve radiative transitions between K^* mesons and kaons are small, when the cut-off scale in the loops is taken to be close to the chiral symmetry restoration scale. The net loop amplitude contribution to the strangeness magnetic moment of the proton is about -0.05, which falls within the uncertainty range of the experimental value.

Baryons in a chiral constituent quark model

In the low-energy regime light and strange baryons should be considered as systems of constituent quarks with confining interaction and a chiral interaction that is mediated by Goldstone bosons as well as by vector and scalar mesons. The flavor-spin structure and sign of the short-range part of the spin-spin force reduces the $SU(6)_{FS}$ symmetry down to $SU(3)_F \times SU(2)_S$, induces hyperfine splittings and provides correct ordering of the lowest states with positive and negative parity. There is a cancellation of the tensor force from pseudoscalar- and vector-exchanges in baryons. The spin-orbit interactions from $ρ$-like and $ω$-like exchanges also cancel each other in baryons while they produce a big spin-orbit force in NN system. A unified description of light and strange baryon spectra calculated in a semirelativistic framework is presented. It is demonstrated that the same short-range part of spin-spin interaction between the constituent quarks induces a strong short-range repulsion in $NN$ system when the latter is treated as $6Q$ system. Thus one can achieve a simultaneous understanding of a baryon structure and baryon-baryon interaction in the low-energy regime.

Effective Q-Q Interactions in Constituent Quark Models

We study the performance of some recent potential models suggested as effective interactions between constituent quarks. In particular, we address constituent quark models for baryons with hybrid Q-Q interactions stemming from one-gluon plus meson exchanges. Upon recalculating two of such models we find them to fail in describing the N and Δspectra. Our calculations are based on accurate solutions of the three-quark systems in both a variational Schrödinger and a rigorous Faddeev approach. It is argued that hybrid {Q-Q} interactions encounter difficulties in describing baryon spectra due to the specific contributions from one-gluon and pion exchanges together. In contrast, a chiral constituent quark model with a Q-Q interaction solely derived from Goldstone-boson exchange is capable of providing a unified description of both the N and Δspectra in good agreement with phenomenology.

Baryon Spectrum and Chiral Dynamics

New results on baryon structure and spectrum developed in collaboration with Dan Riska [1-4] are reported. The main idea is that beyond the chiral symmetry spontaneous breaking scale light and strange baryons should be considered as systems of three constituent quarks with an effective confining interaction and a chiral interaction that is mediated by the octet of Goldstone bosons (pseudoscalar mesons) between the constituent quarks.

Constituent Quark Model Calculation for a possible J^P=0^-,T=0 Dibaryon

There exists experimental evidence that a dibaryon resonance d' with quantum numbers J^P=0^-,T=0 and mass 2065 MeV could be the origin of the narrow peak in the (π^+ ,π^- ) double charge exchange cross--sections on nuclei. We investigate the six--quark system with these quantum--numbers within the constituent quark model, with linear confinement, effective one--gluon exchange at short range and chiral interactions between quarks (πand σexchange). We classify all possible six quark states with J^P=0^-,T=0, and with N=1 and N=3 harmonic oscillator excitations, using different reduction chains. The six--quark Hamiltonian is diagonalized in the basis including the unique N=1 state and the 10 most important states from the N=3 shell. We find, that with most of the possible sets of parameters, the mass of such a "dibaryon" lies above the N(939)+N^\ast(1535) threshold. The only possibility to describe the supposed d'(2065) in the present context is to reduce the confinement strength to very small values, however at the expense of describing the negative parity resonances N^\ast. We also analyze the J^P=0^-,T=2,N=1 six--quark state.

The Baryon Spectrum and Chiral Dynamics

The fine structure of the low energy part of the nucleon and strange hyperon spectra, which are formed of single states without parity doublets, may be understood in terms of an $SU(3)$ flavor-symmetric quark-quark interaction that describes chiral pseudoscalar boson exchange. The model predicts the fine structure splittings within 10-30\% of their empirical values and provides an explanation of the reversed ordering of the lowest positive and negative parity resonances in the nucleon and the $Λ$ hyperon spectra.
