Angular momentum content of the $ρ(1450)$ from chiral lattice fermions

We identify the chiral and angular momentum content of the leading quark-antiquark Fock component for the $ρ(770)$ and $ρ(1450)$ mesons using a two-flavor lattice simulation with dynamical Overlap Dirac fermions. We extract this information from the overlap factors of two interpolating fields with different chiral structure and from the unitary transformation between chiral and angular momentum basis. For the chiral content of the mesons we find that the $ρ(770)$ slightly favors the $(1,0)\oplus(0,1)$ chiral representation and the $ρ(1450)$ slightly favors the $(1/2,1/2)_b$ chiral representation. In the angular momentum basis the $ρ(770)$ is then a $^3S_1$ state, in accordance with the quark model. The $ρ(1450)$ is a $^3D_1$ state, showing that the quark model wrongly assumes the $ρ(1450)$ to be a radial excitation of the $ρ(770)$.

Emergence of a new $SU(4)$ symmetry in the baryon spectrum

Recently a large degeneracy of $J=1$ mesons, that is larger than the $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R \times U(1)_A$ symmetry of the QCD Lagrangian, has been discovered upon truncation of the near-zero modes from the valence quark propagators. It has been found that this degeneracy represents the $SU(4)$ group that includes the chiral rotations as well as the mixing of left- and right-handed quarks. This symmetry group turns out to be a symmetry of confinement in QCD. Consequently, one expects that the same symmetry should persist upon the near-zero mode removal in other hadron sectors as well. It has been shown that indeed the $J=2$ mesons follow the same symmetry pattern upon the low-lying mode elimination. Here we demonstrate the $SU(4)$ symmetry of baryons once the near-zero modes are removed from the quark propagators. We also show a degeneracy of states belonging to different irreducible representations of $SU(4)$. This implies a larger symmetry, that includes $SU(4)$ as a subgroup.

Evidence for a new $SU(4)$ symmetry with $J=2$ mesons

Recently, a new symmetry of mesons has been found upon truncation of the quasi-zero modes of the Overlap Dirac operator in lattice simulations. Namely, the $ρ,ρ',ω,ω',a_1, b_1,h_1$ and possibly $f_1$ $J=1$ mesons get degenerate after removal of the quasi-zero modes. This emergent symmetry has been established to be $SU(4)\supset SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R \times U(1)_A$. It is higher than the symmetry of the QCD Lagrangian and provides not only a mixing of quarks of given chirality in the isospin space, but also the mixing of left-handed and right-handed components. Here we study, with the Overlap Dirac operator, the isovector $J=2$ mesons upon the quasi-zero mode reduction and observe a similar degeneracy. This result further supports the $SU(4)$ symmetry in mesons of given spin $J \geq 1$.

Exploring a new SU(4) symmetry of meson interpolators

In recent lattice calculations it has been discovered that mesons upon truncation of the quasi-zero modes of the Dirac operator obey a symmetry larger than the $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R\times U(1)_A$ symmetry of the QCD Lagrangian. This symmetry has been suggested to be $SU(4) \supset SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R\times U(1)_A$ that mixes not only the u- and d-quarks of a given chirality, but also the left- and right-handed components. Here it is demonstrated that bilinear $\overline{q}q$ interpolating fields of a given spin $J \geq 1$ transform into each other according to irreducible representations of $SU(4)$ or, in general, $SU(2N_F)$. This fact together with the coincidence of the correlation functions establishes $SU(4)$ as a symmetry of the $J \geq 1$ mesons upon quasi-zero mode reduction. It is shown that this symmetry is a symmetry of the confining instantaneous charge-charge interaction in QCD. Different subgroups of $SU(4)$ as well as the $SU(4)$ algebra are explored.

Overlap Quark Propagator in Coulomb Gauge QCD and the Interrelation of Confinement and Chiral Symmetry Breaking

The chirally symmetric overlap quark propagator is explored in Coulomb gauge for the first time. This gauge is especially well suited for studying the interrelation between confinement and chiral symmetry breaking, since confinement can be attributed to the infrared divergence of the vector dressing function of the inverse quark propagator. Using quenched gauge field configurations on a $20^4$ lattice, the dressing functions of the quark propagator as well as the dynamical quark mass function are evaluated, also in the chiral limit. Chiral symmetry is artificially restored by removing the low mode contribution from the quark propagator. After removing enough low-lying modes, the dynamical quark mass function approaches the current quark mass in the whole momentum region and goes to zero in the chiral limit. However, the vector dressing function is unaffected by the low-mode removal. It follows that the quark energy dispersion is still infrared divergent and quarks in such a chiral symmetry restored phase are still confined within a hadron.

Testing the $SU(4)$ degeneracy after low-mode removal with $J=2$ mesons

Recent lattice results on Dirac low-mode removed $J=1,2$ mesons and $J=\frac{1}{2}$ baryons reveal the appearance of a new $SU(4)$ symmetry of confinement. Here the degeneracy of all $J=2$ iso-vector states within an irreducible representation of $SU(4)$ after low-mode removal is demonstrated. The $SU(4)$ symmetry contains $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$ and $U(1)_A$ symmetries as subgroups and mixes all compontents $u_L,u_R,d_L,d_R$ of the two-flavor Dirac field. It implies the vanishing of the interaction of quarks with the color-magnetic field, which is shown by using the QCD Hamiltonian in Coulomb gauge.

Effect of Transverse Gluons on Chiral Restoration in Excited Mesons

The effect of transverse gluons on the chiral symmetry patterns of excited mesons is studied in a Coulomb gauge QCD model. The linear rising static quark-antiquark potential and the transverse gluon propagator known from lattice studies are input into the model. The non-perturbative quark propagator, which enters the meson bound state equations, is derived from the Dyson--Schwinger equations and a complete set of mesons for general spin quantum number is presented. From analyzing the bound state equations for large spins it is demonstrated, that chiral and axial symmetry are restored. In this limit a complete degeneracy of all multiplets with given spin is observed. The effect of the transverse gluon interaction is shown to vanish rapidly as the spin quantum number is increased. For vanishing dynamical quark mass the expected meson degeneracies are recovered.

Quark Sector of the QCD Groundstate in Coulomb Gauge

The variational approach to Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge is extended to full QCD. For the quark sector we use a trial wave functional, which goes beyond the previously used BCS-type state and which explicitly contains the coupling of the quarks to transverse gluons. This quark wave functional contains two variational kernels: One is related to the quark condensate and occurs already in the BCS-type states. The other represents the form factor of the coupling of the quarks to the transverse gluons. Minimization of the energy density with respect to these kernels results in two coupled integral (gap) equations. These equations are solved numerically using the confining part of the non-Abelian color Coulomb potential and the lattice static gluon propagator as input. With the additional coupling of quarks to transverse gluons included the low energy chiral properties increase substantially towards their phenomenological values. We obtain a reasonable description of the chiral condensate, which for a vanishing current quark mass is obtained in the range of 190-235 MeV. The coupling of the quarks to the transverse gluons enhances the constituent quark mass by about 60% in comparison to the pure BCS ansatz.

Hamiltonian approach to Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge

I review results recently obtained within the Hamiltonian approach to Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge. In particular, I will present results for the ghost and gluon propagators and compare these with recent lattice data. Furthermore, I will give an interpretation of the inverse of the ghost form factor as the dielectric function of the Yang-Mills vacuum. Our ansatz for the vacuum wave functional will be checked by means of functional renormalization group flow equations, which are solved for the gluon energy and the ghost form factor. Finally, we calculate the Wilson loop for the vacuum wave functional obtained from the variational approach, using a Dyson equation.

The Wilson loop from a Dyson equation

The Dyson equation proposed for planar temporal Wilson loops in the context of supersymmetric gauge theories is critically analysed thereby exhibiting its ingredients and approximations involved. We reveal its limitations and identify its range of applicability in non-supersymmetric gauge theories. In particular, we show that this equation is applicable only to strongly asymmetric planar Wilson loops (consisting of a long and a short pair of loop segments) and as a consequence the Wilsonian potential can be extracted only up to intermediate distances. By this equation the Wilson loop is exclusively determined by the gluon propagator. We solve the Dyson equation in Coulomb gauge for the temporal Wilson loop with the instantaneous part of the gluon propagator and for the spatial Wilson loop with the static gluon propagator obtained in the Hamiltonian approach to continuum Yang-Mills theory and on the lattice. In both cases we find a linearly rising color potential.
