Quark-diquark string tension, excited baryonic resonances and thermal fluctuations

We study the baryonic fluctuations from second to eighth order involving electric charge, baryon number and strangeness below the quark-gluon plasma crossover and numerically known from lattice QCD calculations. By considering a particular realization of the Hadron Resonance Gas model, we provide evidence on the dominant role of quark-diquark degrees of freedom to describe excited baryonic resonances. After proving by means of suitable Polyakov loop correlators that the quark-diquark and the quark-antiquark forces coincide, $V_{\bar q q } (r) = V_{\bar q D } (r) + \textrm{const}$, we find that the corresponding susceptibilities can be saturated with excited baryonic states in a quark-diquark model picture.

Does the complex Langevin method give unbiased results?

We investigate whether the stationary solution of the Fokker-Planck equation of the complex Langevin algorithm reproduces the correct expectation values. When the complex Langevin algorithm for an action $S(x)$ is convergent, it produces an equivalent complex probability distribution $P(x)$ which ideally would coincide with $e^{-S(x)}$. We show that the projected Fokker-Planck equation fulfilled by $P(x)$ may contain an anomalous term whose form is made explicit. Such term spoils the relation $P(x)=e^{-S(x)}$, introducing a bias in the expectation values. Through the analysis of several periodic and non-periodic one-dimensional problems, using either exact or numerical solutions of the Fokker-Planck equation on the complex plane, it is shown that the anomaly is present quite generally. In fact, an anomaly is expected whenever the Langevin walker needs only a finite time to go to infinity and come back, and this is the case for typical actions. We conjecture that the anomaly is the rule rather than the exception in the one-dimensional case, however, this could change as the number of variables involved increases.

Gibbs sampling of complex valued distributions

A new technique is explored for the Monte Carlo sampling of complex-valued distributions. The method is based on a heat bath approach where the conditional probability is replaced by a positive representation of it on the complex plane. Efficient ways to construct such representations are also introduced. The performance of the algorithm is tested on small and large lattices with a $λϕ^4$ theory with quadratic nearest-neighbor complex coupling. The method works for moderate complex couplings, reproducing reweighting and complex Langevin results and fulfilling various Schwinger-Dyson relations.

Heavy quark-antiquark free energy and thermodynamics of string-hadron avoided crossings

The correlation function between two Polyakov loops encodes the free-energy shift due to a pair of separated colour conjugated sources in the hot QCD medium. This is analyzed in terms of a novel Källén-Lehmann spectral representation for the separating distance, implying an increasing and concave free-energy at all temperatures. We express the heavy $\bar{Q} Q$ free-energy shift below the phase transition in QCD in terms of colour neutral purely hadronic states with no explicit reference to quarks and gluons. Good agreement with lattice data is achieved when considering the avoided crossing mechanism underlying string breaking and with standard quenched values of the string tension known from charmonium and bottomonium phenomenology. We also address the role of the corresponding entropy shift and its renormalization group properties.

Compositeness of the strange, charm and beauty odd parity $Λ$ states

We study the dependence on the quark mass of the compositeness of the lowest-lying odd parity hyperon states. Thus, we pay attention to $Λ-$like states in the strange, charm and beauty, sectors which are dynamically generated using a unitarized meson-baryon model. In the strange sector we use an SU(6) extension of the Weinberg-Tomozawa meson-baryon interaction, and we further implement the heavy-quark spin symmetry to construct the meson-baryon interaction when charmed or beauty hadrons are involved. In the three examined flavor sectors, we obtain two $J^P=1/2^-$ and one $J^P=3/2^-$ $Λ$ states. We find that the $Λ$ states which are bound states (the three $Λ_b$) or narrow resonances (one $Λ(1405)$ and one $Λ_c(2595)$) are well described as molecular states composed of $s$-wave meson-baryon pairs. The $\frac{1}{2}^-$ wide $Λ(1405)$ and $Λ_c(2595)$ as well as the $\frac{3}{2}^-$ $Λ(1520)$ and $Λ_c(2625)$ states display smaller compositeness and so they would require new mechanisms, such as $d$-wave interactions.

Formation spectra of charmed meson--nucleus systems using an antiproton beam

We investigate the structure and formation of charmed meson--nucleus systems, with the aim of understanding the charmed meson--nucleon interactions and the properties of the charmed mesons in the nuclear medium. The $\bar{D}$ mesic nuclei are of special interest, since they have tiny decay widths due to the absence of strong decays for the $\bar{D} N$ pair. Employing an effective model for the $\bar{D} N$ and $D N$ interactions and solving the Klein--Gordon equation for $\bar{D}$ and $D$ in finite nuclei, we find that the $D^{-}$-${}^{11}\rm{B}$ system has $1 s$ and $2p$ mesic nuclear states and that the $D^{0}$-${}^{11}\rm{B}$ system binds in a $1s$ state. In view of the forthcoming experiments by the PANDA and CBM Collaborations at the future FAIR facility and the J-PARC upgrade, we calculate the formation spectra of the $[D^{-}$-${}^{11}\rm{B}]$ and $[D^{0}$-${}^{11}\rm{B}]$ mesic nuclei for an antiproton beam on a ${}^{12} \rm{C}$ target. Our results suggest that it is possible to observe the $2 p$ $D^{-}$ mesic nuclear state with an appropriate experimental setup.

The Polyakov loop in various representations in the confined phase of QCD

We analyze the expectation value of the Polyakov loop in the fundamental and higher representations in the confined phase of QCD. We discuss a hadronic like representation, and find that the Polyakov loop corresponds to a partition function in the presence of a colored source, explaining its real and positive character. Saturating the sum rules to intermediate temperatures requires a large number of multipartonic excited states. By using constituent or bag models, we find detailed low temperature scaling rules which depart from the Casimir scaling and could be tested by lattice calculations.

Charming Baryons

We study odd-parity baryonic resonances with one heavy and three light flavors, dynamically generated by meson-baryon interactions. Special attention is paid to Heavy Quark Spin Symmetry (HQSS), hence pseudoscalar and vector mesons and baryons with J^P = 1/2+ and 3/2+ are considered as constituent hadrons. For the hidden-charm sector (N-c-quarks = N-c-antiquarks = 1), the meson-baryon Lagrangian with Heavy Flavor Symmetry is constructed by a minimal extension of the SU(3) Weinberg-Tomozawa (WT) Lagrangian to fulfill HQSS, such that not new parameters are needed. This interaction can be presented in different formal ways: as a Field Lagrangian, as Hadron creation-annihilation operators, as SU(6)xHQSS group projectors and as multichannel matrices. The multichannel Bethe-Salpeter equation is solved for odd-parity light baryons, hidden-charm N and Delta and Beauty Baryons (Lambda-b). Results of calculations with this model are shown in comparison with other models and experimental values for baryonic resonances.

Constituent Quarks and Gluons, Polyakov loop and the Hadron Resonance Gas Model

Based on first principle QCD arguments, it has been argued in arXiv:1204.2424[hep-ph] that the vacuum expectation value of the Polyakov loop can be represented in the hadron resonance gas model. We study this within the Polyakov-constituent quark model by implementing the quantum and local nature of the Polyakov loop hep-ph/0412308, hep-ph/0607338. The existence of exotic states in the spectrum is discussed.

Hidden charm N and Delta resonances with heavy-quark symmetry

We develop a model to describe odd parity baryon resonances generated dynamically through a unitary baryon-meson coupled-channels approach. The scheme applies to channels with light and/or heavy quark content. Distinct features of the model are that, i) the interaction is an S-wave contact one, ii) it reduces to the SU(3) Weinberg-Tomozawa Hamiltonian when light pseudoscalar mesons are involved, thus, respecting chiral symmetry, iii) spin-flavor in preserved in the light quark sector, and iv) heavy quark spin symmetry is fulfilled in the heavy quark sector. In particular, baryon-meson states with different content in c or in c-bar do not mix. The model is a minimal one and it contains no free parameters. In this work, we focus on baryon resonances with hidden-charm (at least one c-bar and one c quarks). We analyze several possible sectors and, for the sector with zero net charm, we write down the most general Lagrangian consistent with SU(3) and heavy quark spin symmetry. We explicitly study the N and Delta states, which are produced from the S-wave interaction of pseudoscalar and vector mesons with 1/2+ and 3/2+ baryons within the charmless and strangeless hidden charm sector. We predict seven odd parity N-like and five Delta-like states with masses around 4 GeV, most of them as bound states. These states form heavy-quark spin multiplets, which are almost degenerate in mass. The predicted new resonances definitely cannot be accommodated by quark models with three constituent quarks and they might be looked for in the forthcoming PANDA experiment at the future FAIR facility.

Low-lying even parity meson resonances and spin-flavor symmetry revisited

We review and extend the model derived in Phys. Rev. D83 016007 (2011) to address the dynamics of the low-lying even parity meson resonances. This model is based on a coupled channels spin-flavor extension of the chiral Weinberg-Tomozawa Lagrangian. This interaction is then used to study the S-wave meson-meson scattering involving members not only of the π-octet, but also of the ρ-nonet. In this work, we study in detail the structure of the SU(6) symmetry breaking contact terms that respect (or softly break) chiral symmetry. We derive the most general local (without involving derivatives) terms consistent with the chiral symmetry breaking pattern of QCD. After introducing sensible simplifications to reduce the large number of possible operators, we carry out a phenomenological discussion of the effects of these terms. We show how the inclusion of these pieces leads to an improvement of the description of J^P = 2^+ sector, without spoiling the main features of the predictions obtained in the original model in the J^P = 0^+ and J^P = 1^+ sectors. In particular, we find a significantly better description of the I^G(J^{PC})=0^+(2^{++}), 1^-(2^{++}) and the I(J^{P})=\frac{1}{2}(2^{+}) sectors, which correspond to the f_2(1270), a_2(1320) and K^*_2(1430) quantum numbers, respectively.

Odd parity bottom-flavored baryon resonances

The LHCb Collaboration has recently observed two narrow baryon resonances with beauty. Their masses and decay modes look consistent with the quark model orbitally excited states Lambda_b(5912) and Lambda*_b(5920), with quantum numbers J^P=1/2^- and 3/2^-, respectively. We predict the existence of these states within a unitarized meson-baryon coupled-channel dynamical model, which implements heavy-quark spin symmetry. Masses, quantum numbers and couplings of these resonances to the different meson-baryon channels are obtained. We find that the resonances Lambda^0_b(5912) and Lambda^0_b(5920) are heavy-quark spin symmetry partners, which naturally explains their approximate mass degeneracy. Corresponding bottom-strange baryon resonances are predicted at Xi_b(6035.4) (J^P=1/2^-) and Xi_b(6043.3) (J^P=3/2^-). The two Lambda_b and two Xi_b resonances complete a multiplet of SU(3)-flavor times heavy-quark spin symmetry.

Odd-parity dynamically generated baryon resonances with beauty flavor

We study baryon resonances with heavy flavor in a molecular approach, thus as dynamically generated by baryon-meson scattering. This is accomplished by using a unitary coupled-channel model taking, as bare interaction, the extension of the Weinberg-Tomozawa SU(3) Lagrangian. A special attention is payed to the inclusion of heavy-quark spin symmetry and to the study of the generated baryon resonances that complete the heavy-quark spin multiplets. Our model reproduces the Λ_b(5912) and Λ_b(5920) baryons, which were recently observed by the LHCb collaboration. According to our analysis, these two states are heavy-quark spin symmetric partners. We also make predictions for few Ξ_b baryon resonances, which belong to the same SU(3)xHQSS multiplets as the Λ_b particles.

The perturbative scalar massless propagator in Schwarzschild spacetime

A short derivation is given of the weak gravitational field approximation to the scalar massless propagator in Schwarzschild spacetime obtained by Paszko using the path-integral approach. The contribution from the direct coupling of the quantum field to the scalar curvature is explictly included. The propagator complies with Hadamard's pattern, and the vacuum state is consistent with the perturbative version of the Boulware vacuum. The momentum space propagator is computed for massless or massive particles to the same perturbative order. The renormalized value of $\ < ϕ^2(x)\ >$ for the massless case is reproduced.

Charm and Strangeness with Heavy-Quark Spin Symmetry

We study charmed and strange baryon resonances that are generated dynamically within a unitary meson-baryon coupled-channel model which incorporates heavy-quark spin symmetry. This is accomplished by extending the SU(3) Weinberg-Tomozawa chiral Lagrangian to SU(8) spin-flavor symmetry and implementing a strong flavor symmetry breaking. The model generates dynamically resonances with negative parity in all the isospin, spin, and strange and charm sectors that one can form from an s-wave interaction between pseudoscalar and vector meson multiplets with $1/2^+$ and $3/2^+$ baryons. Our results are compared with experimental data from several facilities as well as with other theoretical models. Moreover, we obtain the properties of charmed pseudoscalar and vector mesons in dense matter within this coupled-channel unitary effective model by taking into account Pauli-blocking effects and meson self-energies in a self-consistent manner. We obtain the open-charm meson spectral functions in this dense nuclear environment, and discuss their implications on the formation of $D$-mesic nuclei at FAIR energies.

Charmed and strange baryon resonances with heavy-quark spin symmetry

We study charmed and strange baryon resonances that are generated dynamically by a unitary baryon-meson coupled-channel model which incorporates heavy-quark spin symmetry. This is accomplished by extending the SU(3) Weinberg-Tomozawa chiral Lagrangian to SU(8) spin-flavor symmetry plus a suitable symmetry breaking. The model produces resonances with negative parity from s-wave interaction of pseudoscalar and vector mesons with $1/2^+$ and $3/2^+$ baryons. Resonances in all the isospin, spin, and strange sectors with one, two, and three charm units are studied. Our results are compared with experimental data from several facilities, such as the CLEO, Belle or BaBar Collaborations, as well as with other theoretical models. Some of our dynamically generated states can be readily assigned to resonances found experimentally, while others do not have a straightforward identification and require the compilation of more data and also a refinement of the model. In particular, we identify the $Ξ_c(2790)$ and $Ξ_c(2815)$ resonances as possible candidates for a heavy-quark spin symmetry doublet.

The extension of the SU(3) Weinberg-Tomozawa chiral Lagrangian to SU(8) spin-flavor symmetry plus a suitable symmetry breaking is used. The model produces resonances with negative parity from s-wave interaction of pseudoscalar and vector mesons with $1/2^+$ and $3/2^+$ baryons. Some of our dynamically generated states can be readily assigned to resonances found experimentally, while others do not have a straightforward identification and require the compilation of more data and also refinements of the model.

Charmed mesons in nuclei with heavy-quark spin symmetry

We study the properties of charmed pseudoscalar and vector mesons in dense matter within a unitary meson-baryon coupled-channel model which incorporates heavy-quark spin symmetry. This is accomplished by extending the SU(3) Weinberg-Tomozawa Lagrangian to SU(8) spin-flavor symmetry and implementing a suitable flavor symmetry breaking. Several resonances with negative parity are generated dynamically by the s-wave interaction between pseudoscalar and vector meson multiplets with $1/2^+$ and $3/2^+$ baryons. Those states are then compared to experimental data as well as theoretical models. Next, Pauli-blocking effects and meson self-energies are introduced in a self-consistent manner to obtain the open-charm meson spectral functions in a dense nuclear environment. We finally discuss the formation of $D$-mesic nuclei.

The Polyakov loop and the hadron resonance gas model

The Polyakov loop has been used repeatedly as an order parameter in the deconfinement phase transition in QCD. We argue that, in the confined phase, its expectation value can be represented in terms of hadronic states, similarly to the hadron resonance gas model for the pressure. Specifically, L(T) \approx 1/2\sum_αg_α\,e^(-Δ_α/T), where g_αare the degeneracies and Δ_αare the masses of hadrons with exactly one heavy quark (the mass of the heavy quark itself being subtracted). We show that this approximate sum rule gives a fair description of available lattice data with N_f=2+1 for temperatures in the range 150MeV<T<190MeV with conventional meson and baryon states from two different models. For temperatures below 150MeV different lattice results disagree. One set of data can be described if exotic hadrons are present in the QCD spectrum while other sets do not require such states.

D^- mesic atoms

The anti-D meson self-energy is evaluated self-consistently, using unitarized coupled-channel theory, by computing the in-medium meson-baryon T-matrix in the C=-1,S=0 sector. The heavy pseudo-scalar and heavy vector mesons, anti-D and anti-D^*, are treated on equal footing as required by heavy quark spin symmetry. Results for energy levels and widths of D^- mesic atoms in 12C, 40Ca, 118Sn and 208Pb are presented. The spectrum contains states of atomic and of nuclear types for all nuclei. anti-D^0--nucleus bound states are also obtained. We find that, after electromagnetic and nuclear cascade, these systems end up with the anti-D bound in the nucleus, either as a meson or as part of a exotic anti-D N (pentaquark) loosely bound state.

Derivative expansion of the heat kernel at finite temperature

The method of covariant symbols of Pletnev and Banin is extended to space-times with topology $\R^n\times S^1\times ... \times S^1$. By means of this tool, we obtain explicit formulas for the diagonal matrix elements and the trace of the heat kernel at finite temperature to fourth order in a strict covariant derivative expansion. The role of the Polyakov loop is emphasized. Chan's formula for the effective action to one loop is similarly extended. The expressions obtained formally apply to a larger class of spaces, $h$-spaces, with an arbitrary weight function $h(p)$ in the integration over the momentum of the loop.

Leading order one-loop CP and P violating effective action in the Standard Model

The fermions of the Standard Model are integrated out to obtain the effective Lagrangian in the sector violating P and CP at zero temperature. We confirm that no contributions arise for operators of dimension six or less and show that the leading operators are of dimension eight. To assert this we explicitly compute one such non-vanishing contribution, namely, that with three Z^0, two W^+ and two W^-. Terms involving just gluons and W's are also considered, however, they turn out to vanish in the P-odd sector to eighth order. The analogous gluonic term in the CP-odd and P-even (C-odd) sector is non-vanishing and it is also computed. The expressions derived apply directly to Dirac massive neutrinos. All CP-violating results display the infrared enhancement already found at dimension six.

Odd Parity Light Baryon Resonances

We use a consistent SU(6) extension of the meson-baryon chiral Lagrangian within a coupled channel unitary approach in order to calculate the T-matrix for meson-baryon scattering in s-wave. The building blocks of the scheme are the pion and nucleon octets, the rho nonet and the Delta decuplet. We identify poles in this unitary T-matrix and interpret them as resonances. We study here the non exotic sectors with strangeness S=0,-1,-2,-3 and spin J=1/2, 3/2 and 5/2. Many of the poles generated can be associated with known N, Delta, Sigma, Lambda and Xi resonances with negative parity. We show that most of the low-lying three and four star odd parity baryon resonances with spin 1/2 and 3/2 can be related to multiplets of the spin-flavor symmetry group SU(6). This study allows us to predict the spin-parity of the Xi(1620), Xi(1690), Xi(1950), Xi(2250), Omega(2250) and Omega(2380) resonances, which have not been determined experimentally yet.

Exotic dynamically generated baryons with negative charm quantum number

Following a model based on the $\rm{SU}(8)$ symmetry that treats heavy pseudo-scalars and heavy vector mesons on an equal footing, as required by heavy quark symmetry, we study the interaction of baryons and mesons in coupled channels within an unitary approach that generates dynamically poles in the scattering $T$-matrix. We concentrate in the exotic channels with negative charm quantum number for which there is the experimental claim of one state.

Low-lying even parity meson resonances and spin-flavor symmetry

A study is presented of the $s-$wave meson-meson interactions involving members of the $ρ-$nonet and of the $π-$octet. The starting point is an SU(6) spin-flavor extension of the SU(3) flavor Weinberg-Tomozawa Lagrangian. SU(6) symmetry breaking terms are then included to account for the physical meson masses and decay constants, while preserving partial conservation of the axial current in the light pseudoscalar sector. Next, the $T-$matrix amplitudes are obtained by solving the Bethe Salpeter equation in coupled-channel with the kernel built from the above interactions. The poles found on the first and second Riemann sheets of the amplitudes are identified with their possible Particle Data Group (PDG) counterparts. It is shown that most of the low-lying even parity PDG meson resonances, specially in the $J^P=0^+$ and $1^+$ sectors, can be classified according to multiplets of the spin-flavor symmetry group SU(6). The $f_0(1500)$, $f_1(1420)$ and some $0^+(2^{++})$ resonances cannot be accommodated within this SU(6) scheme and thus they would be clear candidates to be glueballs or hybrids. Finally, we predict the existence of five exotic resonances ($I \ge 3/2$ and/or $|Y|=2$) with masses in the range 1.4--1.6 GeV, which would complete the $27_1$, $10_3$, and $10_3^*$ multiplets of SU(3)$\otimes$SU(2).

SU(6)$\supset$SU(3)xSU(2) and SU(8)$\supset$SU(4)xSU(2) Clebsch-Gordan coefficients

Tables of scalar factors are presented for 63x63 and 120x63 in SU(8)$\supset$SU(4)xSU(2), and for 35x35 and 56x35 in SU(6)$\supset$SU(3)xSU(2). Related tables for SU(4)$\supset$SU(3)xU(1) and SU(3)$\supset$SU(2)xU(1) are also provided so that the Clebsch-Gordan coefficients can be completely reconstructed. These are suitable to study meson-meson and baryon-meson within a spin-flavor symmetric scheme.

Charmed baryon resonances with heavy-quark symmetry

Some states can already be identified with experimental observations, such as $Λ_c(2595)$, $Λ_c(2660)$, $Σ_c(2902)$ or $Λ_c(2941)$, while others need a compilation of more experimental data as well as an extension of the model to include higher order contributions. We also compare our model to previous SU(4) schemes.

Correlations between perturbation theory and power corrections in QCD at zero and finite temperature

The duality between QCD perturbative series and power corrections recently conjectured by Narison and Zakharov is analyzed. We propose to study correlations between both contributions as diagnostics tool. A very strong correlation between perturbative and non perturbative contributions is observed for several observables at zero and at finite temperature supporting the validity of the dual description.

Trace Anomaly and dimension two gluon condensate above the phase transition

The dimension two gluon condensate has been used previously within a simple phenomenological model to describe power corrections from available lattice data for the renormalized Polyakov loop and the heavy quark-antiquark free energy in the deconfined phase of QCD (hep-ph/0505215,hep-ph/0702055). The QCD trace anomaly of gluodynamics also shows unequivocal inverse temperature power corrections which may be encoded as dimension two gluon condensate. We analyze lattice data of the trace anomaly and compare with other determinations of the condensate from previous references, yielding roughly similar numerical values.

Generalized heat kernel coefficients

Following Osipov and Hiller, a generalized heat kernel expansion is considered for the effective action of bosonic operators. In this generalization, the standard heat kernel expansion, which counts inverse powers of a c-number mass parameter, is extended by allowing the mass to be a matrix in flavor space. We show that the generalized heat kernel coefficients can be related to the standard ones in a simple way. This holds with or without trace and integration over spacetime, to all orders and for general flavor spaces. Gauge invariance is manifest.

New Improvements for Mie Scattering Calculations

New improvements to compute Mie scattering quantities are presented. They are based on a detailed analysis of the various sources of error in Mie computations and on mathematical justifications. The algorithm developed on these improvements proves to be reliable and efficient, without size ($x=2πR/λ$) nor refractive index ($m=m_R-{\rm i}m_I$) limitations, and the user has a choice to fix in advance the desired precision in the results. Gauge invariant derivative expansion of the effective action at finite temperature and density and the scalar field in 2+1 dimensions

A method is presented for the computation of the one-loop effective action at finite temperature and density. The method is based on an expansion in the number of spatial covariant derivatives. It applies to general background field configurations with arbitrary internal symmetry group and space-time dependence. Full invariance under small and large gauge transformations is preserved without assuming stationary or Abelian fields nor fixing the gauge. The method is applied to the computation of the effective action of spin zero particles in 2+1 dimensions at finite temperature and density and in presence of background gauge fields. The calculation is carried out through second order in the number of spatial covariant derivatives. Some limiting cases are worked out.

Temperature dependence of the anomalous effective action of fermions in two and four dimensions

The temperature dependence of the anomalous sector of the effective action of fermions coupled to external gauge and pseudo-scalar fields is computed at leading order in an expansion in the number of Lorentz indices in two and four dimensions. The calculation preserves chiral symmetry and confirms that a temperature dependence is compatible with axial anomaly saturation. The result checks soft-pions theorems at zero temperature as well as recent results in the literature for the pionic decay amplitude into static photons in the chirally symmetric phase. The case of chiral fermions is also considered.
