Automated Optical Multi-layer Design via Deep Reinforcement Learning

Optical multi-layer thin films are widely used in optical and energy applications requiring photonic designs. Engineers often design such structures based on their physical intuition. However, solely relying on human experts can be time-consuming and may lead to sub-optimal designs, especially when the design space is large. In this work, we frame the multi-layer optical design task as a sequence generation problem. A deep sequence generation network is proposed for efficiently generating optical layer sequences. We train the deep sequence generation network with proximal policy optimization to generate multi-layer structures with desired properties. The proposed method is applied to two energy applications. Our algorithm successfully discovered high-performance designs, outperforming structures designed by human experts in task 1, and a state-of-the-art memetic algorithm in task 2.

Terahertz Spectrometer of Wavelength Dimensions Based on Extraordinary Transmission

Subwavelength-slotted parallel plate waveguides exhibit a localized electromagnetic resonance bound to the slits at a frequency slightly below the transverse electric cutoff [R. Merlin, Phys. Rev. X 2, 031015 (2012)]. The resonance is long-lived and, as opposed to the vanishingly small transmission shown by a single sub-wavelength aperture, it gives perfect transmission for perfectly-conducting plates. We show that the aperture-supported resonances of a pair of slotted copper plates have long lifetimes at THz frequencies. Finite element method calculations show that these bound resonances can have quality factors greater than 100. Effects of plate length and imperfect parallel alignment are also discussed. Using THz time domain spectroscopy, we measured the transmission of a broadband pulse through a test structure for several plate separations. These results suggest that the slotted waveguide can function as a highly compact THz spectrometer.

UV imprinting and aligned ink-jet printing for multi-layer patterning of electro-optic polymer modulators

The present work demonstrates an electro-optic polymer based Mach-Zehnder (MZ) modulator fabricated utilizing advanced ultraviolet (UV) imprinting and aligned ink-jet printing technologies for patterning and layer deposition. The bottom electrode layer is designed and directly ink-jet printed on the substrate to form the patterned layer. The waveguide structure is formed into a bottom cladding polymer using a transparent flexible mold based UV imprinting method. All other layers can be ink-jet printed. The top electrode is aligned and printed over the Mach-Zehnder arm. The modulator demonstrates a V-pi of 8V at 3kHz. This technology shows great potential in minimizing the fabrication complexity and roll-to-roll compatibility for manufacturing low cost, light-weight, and conformal modulators at high throughput.

Sensitivity enhancement in optical micro-tube resonator sensors via mode coupling

A liquid filled, low refractive index material inner-coated silica micro-tube has been proposed and studied as a coupled micro-resonator sensor to greatly enhance biochemical sensor sensitivity. Its unique coupling phenomenon has been analyzed and utilized to boost the refractive index sensitivity of the device to 967nm/RIU. Through optimization of the coupling strength between the two microresonators, further improvement in refractive index sensitivity up to 1100nm/RIU has been achieved. This mode coupling strategy allows us to design robust, thick-walled micro-tube sensors with ultra-high sensitivity which is useful in practical biochemical sensing applications.

Photonic crystal microdisk lasers with exceptional spontaneous emission coupling to the lasing mode

A long existing issue for microdisk lasers is the small spontaneous emission coupling rate (β) in microdisk,. We found that it is due to the coupling of emitter spontaneous emission into competing Fabry-Perot (FP) modes in the microdisk cavity. Based on this analysis, we propose a new type of photonic crystal microdisk (PCM) laser to drastically suppress the photonic density of states in the vertical FP modes. As a result, we obtained a three fold increase of β than previously reported highest β of 0.15 at room temperature. The spontaneous emission control in truncated photonic crystals becomes efficient when the period number is more than one. We also demonstrate a three-stack PCM laser at low temperature with β as high as 0.72, which is 24 times higher than that in typical single microdisk (0.03), which also results in 50% threshold reduction.
