Development of a 127^{127}Xe calibration source for nEXO

We study a possible calibration technique for the nEXO experiment using a 127^{127}Xe electron capture source. nEXO is a next-generation search for neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ0νββ) that will use a 5-tonne, monolithic liquid xenon time projection chamber (TPC). The xenon, used both as source and detection medium, will be enriched to 90% in 136^{136}Xe. To optimize the event reconstruction and energy resolution, calibrations are needed to map the position- and time-dependent detector response. The 36.3 day half-life of 127^{127}Xe and its small QQ-value compared to that of 136^{136}Xe 0νββ0νββ would allow a small activity to be maintained continuously in the detector during normal operations without introducing additional backgrounds, thereby enabling in-situ calibration and monitoring of the detector response. In this work we describe a process for producing the source and preliminary experimental tests. We then use simulations to project the precision with which such a source could calibrate spatial corrections to the light and charge response of the nEXO TPC.

First measurement of high-energy reactor antineutrinos at Daya Bay

This Letter reports the first measurement of high-energy reactor antineutrinos at Daya Bay, with nearly 9000 inverse beta decay candidates in the prompt energy region of 8-12~MeV observed over 1958 days of data collection. A multivariate analysis is used to separate 2500 signal events from background statistically. The hypothesis of no reactor antineutrinos with neutrino energy above 10~MeV is rejected with a significance of 6.2 standard deviations. A 29\% antineutrino flux deficit in the prompt energy region of 8-11~MeV is observed compared to a recent model prediction. We provide the unfolded antineutrino spectrum above 7 MeV as a data-based reference for other experiments. This result provides the first direct observation of the production of antineutrinos from several high-QβQ_β isotopes in commercial reactors.

Joint Determination of Reactor Antineutrino Spectra from 235^{235}U and 239^{239}Pu Fission by Daya Bay and PROSPECT

A joint determination of the reactor antineutrino spectra resulting from the fission of 235^{235}U and 239^{239}Pu has been carried out by the Daya Bay and PROSPECT collaborations. This Letter reports the level of consistency of 235^{235}U spectrum measurements from the two experiments and presents new results from a joint analysis of both data sets. The measurements are found to be consistent. The combined analysis reduces the degeneracy between the dominant 235^{235}U and 239^{239}Pu isotopes and improves the uncertainty of the 235^{235}U spectral shape to about 3\%. The 235{}^{235}U and 239^{239}Pu antineutrino energy spectra are unfolded from the jointly deconvolved reactor spectra using the Wiener-SVD unfolding method, providing a data-based reference for other reactor antineutrino experiments and other applications. This is the first measurement of the 235^{235}U and 239^{239}Pu spectra based on the combination of experiments at low- and highly enriched uranium reactors.

NEXO: Neutrinoless double beta decay search beyond 102810^{28} year half-life sensitivity

The nEXO neutrinoless double beta decay experiment is designed to use a time projection chamber and 5000 kg of isotopically enriched liquid xenon to search for the decay in 136^{136}Xe. Progress in the detector design, paired with higher fidelity in its simulation and an advanced data analysis, based on the one used for the final results of EXO-200, produce a sensitivity prediction that exceeds the half-life of 102810^{28} years. Specifically, improvements have been made in the understanding of production of scintillation photons and charge as well as of their transport and reconstruction in the detector. The more detailed knowledge of the detector construction has been paired with more assays for trace radioactivity in different materials. In particular, the use of custom electroformed copper is now incorporated in the design, leading to a substantial reduction in backgrounds from the intrinsic radioactivity of detector materials. Furthermore, a number of assumptions from previous sensitivity projections have gained further support from interim work validating the nEXO experiment concept. Together these improvements and updates suggest that the nEXO experiment will reach a half-life sensitivity of 1.35×10281.35\times 10^{28} yr at 90% confidence level in 10 years of data taking, covering the parameter space associated with the inverted neutrino mass ordering, along with a significant portion of the parameter space for the normal ordering scenario, for almost all nuclear matrix elements. The effects of backgrounds deviating from the nominal values used for the projections are also illustrated, concluding that the nEXO design is robust against a number of imperfections of the model.

The EXO-200 detector, part II: Auxiliary Systems

The EXO-200 experiment searched for neutrinoless double-beta decay of 136^{136}Xe with a single-phase liquid xenon detector. It used an active mass of 110 kg of 80.6%-enriched liquid xenon in an ultra-low background time projection chamber with ionization and scintillation detection and readout. This paper describes the design and performance of the various support systems necessary for detector operation, including cryogenics, xenon handling, and controls. Novel features of the system were driven by the need to protect the thin-walled detector chamber containing the liquid xenon, to achieve high chemical purity of the Xe, and to maintain thermal uniformity across the detector.

Improved Constraints on Sterile Neutrino Mixing from Disappearance Searches in the MINOS, MINOS+, Daya Bay, and Bugey-3 Experiments

Searches for electron antineutrino, muon neutrino, and muon antineutrino disappearance driven by sterile neutrino mixing have been carried out by the Daya Bay and MINOS+ collaborations. This Letter presents the combined results of these searches, along with exclusion results from the Bugey-3 reactor experiment, framed in a minimally extended four-neutrino scenario. Significantly improved constraints on the θμeθ_{μe} mixing angle are derived that constitute the most stringent limits to date over five orders of magnitude in the sterile mass-squared splitting Δm412Δm^2_{41}, excluding the 90% C.L. sterile-neutrino parameter space allowed by the LSND and MiniBooNE observations at 90% CLs_s for Δm412<5 Δm^2_{41}<5\,eV2^2.Furthermore, the LSND and MiniBooNE 99% C.L. allowed regions are excluded at 99% CLs_s for Δm412Δm^2_{41} << 1.2 eV2^2.

Measurement of the scintillation and ionization response of liquid xenon at MeV energies in the EXO-200 experiment

Liquid xenon (LXe) is employed in a number of current and future detectors for rare event searches. We use the EXO-200 experimental data to measure the absolute scintillation and ionization yields generated by γγ interactions from 228^{228}Th (2615~keV), 226^{226}Ra (1764~keV) and 60^{60}Co (1332~keV and 1173~keV) calibration sources, over a range of electric fields. The WW-value that defines the recombination-independent energy scale is measured to be 11.5 ± 0.511.5~\pm~0.5~(syst.)~± 0.1\pm~0.1~(stat.) eV. These data are also used to measure the recombination fluctuations in the number of electrons and photons produced by the calibration sources at the MeV-scale, which deviate from extrapolations of lower-energy data. Additionally, a semi-empirical model for the energy resolution of the detector is developed, which is used to constrain the recombination efficiency, i.e., the fraction of recombined electrons that result in the emission of a detectable photon. Detailed measurements of the absolute charge and light yields for MeV-scale electron recoils are important for predicting the performance of future neutrinoless double beta decay detectors.

Measurement of the Spectral Shape of the beta-decay of 137Xe to the Ground State of 137Cs in EXO-200 and Comparison with Theory

We report on a comparison between the theoretically predicted and experimentally measured spectra of the first-forbidden non-unique ββ-decay transition 137Xe(7/2−)→ 137Cs(7/2+)^{137}\textrm{Xe}(7/2^-)\to\,^{137}\textrm{Cs}(7/2^+). The experimental data were acquired by the EXO-200 experiment during a deployment of an AmBe neutron source. The ultra-low background environment of EXO-200, together with dedicated source deployment and analysis procedures, allowed for collection of a pure sample of the decays, with an estimated signal-to-background ratio of more than 99-to-1 in the energy range from 1075 to 4175 keV. In addition to providing a rare and accurate measurement of the first-forbidden non-unique ββ-decay shape, this work constitutes a novel test of the calculated electron spectral shapes in the context of the reactor antineutrino anomaly and spectral bump.

Optimization of the JUNO liquid scintillator composition using a Daya Bay antineutrino detector

To maximize the light yield of the liquid scintillator (LS) for the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a 20 t LS sample was produced in a pilot plant at Daya Bay. The optical properties of the new LS in various compositions were studied by replacing the gadolinium-loaded LS in one antineutrino detector. The concentrations of the fluor, PPO, and the wavelength shifter, bis-MSB, were increased in 12 steps from 0.5 g/L and <0.01 mg/L to 4 g/L and 13 mg/L, respectively. The numbers of total detected photoelectrons suggest that, with the optically purified solvent, the bis-MSB concentration does not need to be more than 4 mg/L. To bridge the one order of magnitude in the detector size difference between Daya Bay and JUNO, the Daya Bay data were used to tune the parameters of a newly developed optical model. Then, the model and tuned parameters were used in the JUNO simulation. This enabled to determine the optimal composition for the JUNO LS: purified solvent LAB with 2.5 g/L PPO, and 1 to 4 mg/L bis-MSB.

Reflectance of Silicon Photomultipliers in Linear Alkylbenzene

Reflectance of silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) is an important aspect to understand the large scale SiPM-based detector systems and evaluate the performance of SiPMs. We report the reflactance of two SiPMs, NUV-HD-lowCT and S14160-60-50HS manufactured by Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK) and Hamamatsu Photonics K.K. (HPK) respectively, in linear alkylbenzene (LAB) and in air at visible wavelengths. Our results show that the reflectance of the FBK SiPM in air varies in the range of 14% to 23% , depending on wavelengths and angle of incidence, which is 2 time larger than that of the HPK device. This indicates that the two manufacturers are using different designs of anti-reflective coating on SiPMs' surfaces. The reflectance is reduced by about 10% when SiPMs are immersed in LAB, compared with that measured in air. The profiles of reflected light beams are also measured by a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera for the two SiPMs.

Measurements of electron transport in liquid and gas Xenon using a laser-driven photocathode

Measurements of electron drift properties in liquid and gaseous xenon are reported. The electrons are generated by the photoelectric effect in a semi-transparent gold photocathode driven in transmission mode with a pulsed ultraviolet laser. The charges drift and diffuse in a small chamber at various electric fields and a fixed drift distance of 2.0 cm. At an electric field of 0.5 kV/cm, the measured drift velocities and corresponding temperature coefficients respectively are 1.97±0.041.97 \pm 0.04 mm/μμs and (−0.69±0.05)(-0.69\pm0.05)\%/K for liquid xenon, and 1.42±0.031.42 \pm 0.03 mm/μμs and (+0.11±0.01)(+0.11\pm0.01)\%/K for gaseous xenon at 1.5 bar. In addition, we measure longitudinal diffusion coefficients of 25.7±4.625.7 \pm 4.6 cm2^2/s and 149±23149 \pm 23 cm2^2/s, for liquid and gas, respectively. The quantum efficiency of the gold photocathode is studied at the photon energy of 4.73 eV in liquid and gaseous xenon, and vacuum. These charge transport properties and the behavior of photocathodes in a xenon environment are important in designing and calibrating future large scale noble liquid detectors.

Reflectance of Silicon Photomultipliers at Vacuum Ultraviolet Wavelengths

Characterization of the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) reflectance of silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) is important for large-scale SiPM-based photodetector systems. We report the angular dependence of the specular reflectance in a vacuum of SiPMs manufactured by Fondazionc Bruno Kessler (FBK) and Hamamatsu Photonics K.K. (HPK) over wavelengths ranging from 120 nm to 280 nm. Refractive index and extinction coefficient of the thin silicon-dioxide film deposited on the surface of the FBK SiPMs are derived from reflectance data of a FBK silicon wafer with the same deposited oxide film as SiPMs. The diffuse reflectance of SiPMs is also measured at 193 nm. We use the VUV spectral dependence of the optical constants to predict the reflectance of the FBK silicon wafer and FBK SiPMs in liquid xenon.

Reflectivity and PDE of VUV4 Hamamatsu SiPMs in Liquid Xenon

Understanding reflective properties of materials and photodetection efficiency (PDE) of photodetectors is important for optimizing energy resolution and sensitivity of the next generation neutrinoless double beta decay, direct detection dark matter, and neutrino oscillation experiments that will use noble liquid gases, such as nEXO, DARWIN, DarkSide-20k, and DUNE. Little information is currently available about reflectivity and PDE in liquid noble gases, because such measurements are difficult to conduct in a cryogenic environment and at short enough wavelengths. Here we report a measurement of specular reflectivity and relative PDE of Hamamatsu VUV4 silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) with 50 micrometer micro-cells conducted with xenon scintillation light (~175 nm) in liquid xenon. The specular reflectivity at 15 deg. incidence of three samples of VUV4 SiPMs is found to be 30.4+/-1.4%, 28.6+/-1.3%, and 28.0+/-1.3%, respectively. The PDE at normal incidence differs by +/-8% (standard deviation) among the three devices. The angular dependence of the reflectivity and PDE was also measured for one of the SiPMs. Both the reflectivity and PDE decrease as the angle of incidence increases. This is the first measurement of an angular dependence of PDE and reflectivity of a SiPM in liquid xenon.

Cosmogenic Backgrounds to 0νββ in EXO-200

As neutrinoless double-beta decay experiments become more sensitive and intrinsic radioactivity in detector materials is reduced, previously minor contributions to the background must be understood and eliminated. With this in mind, cosmogenic backgrounds have been studied with the EXO-200 experiment. Using the EXO-200 TPC, the muon flux (through a flat horizontal surface) underground at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) has been measured to be Φ = 4.07 ±\pm 0.14 (sys) ±\pm 0.03 (stat) ×\times 10−710^{-7}cm−2^{-2} s−1^{-1}, with a vertical intensity of IvI_{v} = 2.97−0.13+0.14^{+0.14}_{-0.13} (sys) ±\pm 0.02 (stat) ×\times 10−710^{-7}cm−2^{-2} s−1^{-1} sr−1^{-1}. Simulations of muon-induced backgrounds identified several potential cosmogenic radionuclides, though only 137Xe is a significant background for the 136Xe 0νββ search with EXO-200. Muon-induced neutron backgrounds were measured using γ-rays from neutron capture on the detector materials. This provided a measurement of 137Xe yield, and a test of the accuracy of the neutron production and transport simulations. The independently measured rates of 136Xe neutron capture and of 137Xe decay agree within uncertainties. Geant4 and FLUKA simulations were performed to estimate neutron capture rates, and these estimates agreed to within ~40% or better with measurements. The ability to identify 136Xe(n,γ) events will allow for rejection of 137Xe backgrounds in future 0νββ analyses.

First Search for Lorentz and CPT Violation in Double Beta Decay with EXO-200

A search for Lorentz- and CPT-violating signals in the double beta decay spectrum of 136^{136}Xe has been performed using an exposure of 100 kg⋅\cdotyr with the EXO-200 detector. No significant evidence of the spectral modification due to isotropic Lorentz-violation was found, and a two-sided limit of −2.65×10−5  GeV<a˚of(3)<7.60×10−6  GeV-2.65 \times 10^{-5 } \; \textrm{GeV} < \mathring{a}^{(3)}_{\text{of}} < 7.60 \times 10^{-6} \; \textrm{GeV} (90% C.L.) is placed on the relevant coefficient within the Standard-Model Extension (SME). This is the first experimental study of the effect of the SME-defined oscillation-free and momentum-independent neutrino coupling operator on the double beta decay process.

Improved Search for a Light Sterile Neutrino with the Full Configuration of the Daya Bay Experiment

This Letter reports an improved search for light sterile neutrino mixing in the electron antineutrino disappearance channel with the full configuration of the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment. With an additional 404 days of data collected in eight antineutrino detectors, this search benefits from 3.6 times the statistics available to the previous publication, as well as from improvements in energy calibration and background reduction. A relative comparison of the rate and energy spectrum of reactor antineutrinos in the three experimental halls yields no evidence of sterile neutrino mixing in the 2×10−4≲∣Δm412∣≲0.32\times10^{-4} \lesssim |Δm^{2}_{41}| \lesssim 0.3 eV2^{2} mass range. The resulting limits on sin⁡22θ14\sin^{2}2θ_{14} are improved by approximately a factor of 2 over previous results and constitute the most stringent constraints to date in the ∣Δm412∣≲0.2|Δm^{2}_{41}| \lesssim 0.2 eV2^{2} region.

Limits on Active to Sterile Neutrino Oscillations from Disappearance Searches in the MINOS, Daya Bay, and Bugey-3 Experiments

Searches for a light sterile neutrino have been performed independently by the MINOS and the Daya Bay experiments using the muon (anti)neutrino and electron antineutrino disappearance channels, respectively. In this Letter, results from both experiments are combined with those from the Bugey-3 reactor neutrino experiment to constrain oscillations into light sterile neutrinos. The three experiments are sensitive to complementary regions of parameter space, enabling the combined analysis to probe regions allowed by the LSND and MiniBooNE experiments in a minimally extended four-neutrino flavor framework. Stringent limits on sin⁡22θμe\sin^2 2θ_{μe} are set over 6 orders of magnitude in the sterile mass-squared splitting Δm412Δm^2_{41}. The sterile-neutrino mixing phase space allowed by the LSND and MiniBooNE experiments is excluded for Δm412<0.8Δm^2_{41} < 0.8 eV2^2 at 95% CLs_s.

New measurement of θ13θ_{13} via neutron capture on hydrogen at Daya Bay

This article reports an improved independent measurement of neutrino mixing angle θ13θ_{13} at the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment. Electron antineutrinos were identified by inverse ββ-decays with the emitted neutron captured by hydrogen, yielding a data-set with principally distinct uncertainties from that with neutrons captured by gadolinium. With the final two of eight antineutrino detectors installed, this study used 621 days of data including the previously reported 217-day data set with six detectors. The dominant statistical uncertainty was reduced by 49%. Intensive studies of the cosmogenic muon-induced 9^9Li and fast neutron backgrounds and the neutron-capture energy selection efficiency, resulted in a reduction of the systematic uncertainty by 26%. The deficit in the detected number of antineutrinos at the far detectors relative to the expected number based on the near detectors yielded sin⁡22θ13=0.071±0.011\sin^22θ_{13} = 0.071 \pm 0.011 in the three-neutrino-oscillation framework. The combination of this result with the gadolinium-capture result is also reported.

Study of the wave packet treatment of neutrino oscillation at Daya Bay

The disappearance of reactor νˉe\barν_e observed by the Daya Bay experiment is examined in the framework of a model in which the neutrino is described by a wave packet with a relative intrinsic momentum dispersion σrelσ_\text{rel}. Three pairs of nuclear reactors and eight antineutrino detectors, each with good energy resolution, distributed among three experimental halls, supply a high-statistics sample of νˉe\barν_e acquired at nine different baselines. This provides a unique platform to test the effects which arise from the wave packet treatment of neutrino oscillation. The modified survival probability formula was used to fit Daya Bay data, providing the first experimental limits: 2.38⋅10−17<σrel<0.232.38 \cdot 10^{-17} < σ_{\rm rel} < 0.23. Treating the dimensions of the reactor cores and detectors as constraints, the limits are improved: 10−14≲σrel<0.2310^{-14} \lesssim σ_{\rm rel} < 0.23, and an upper limit of σrel<0.20σ_{\rm rel} <0.20 is obtained. All limits correspond to a 95\% C.L. Furthermore, the effect due to the wave packet nature of neutrino oscillation is found to be insignificant for reactor antineutrinos detected by the Daya Bay experiment thus ensuring an unbiased measurement of the oscillation parameters sin⁡22θ13\sin^22θ_{13} and Δm322Δm^2_{32} within the plane wave model.

The Detector System of The Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment

The Daya Bay experiment was the first to report simultaneous measurements of reactor antineutrinos at multiple baselines leading to the discovery of νˉe\barν_e oscillations over km-baselines. Subsequent data has provided the world's most precise measurement of sin22θ13\rm{sin}^22θ_{13} and the effective mass splitting Δmee2Δm_{ee}^2. The experiment is located in Daya Bay, China where the cluster of six nuclear reactors is among the world's most prolific sources of electron antineutrinos. Multiple antineutrino detectors are deployed in three underground water pools at different distances from the reactor cores to search for deviations in the antineutrino rate and energy spectrum due to neutrino mixing. Instrumented with photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), the water pools serve as shielding against natural radioactivity from the surrounding rock and provide efficient muon tagging. Arrays of resistive plate chambers over the top of each pool provide additional muon detection. The antineutrino detectors were specifically designed for measurements of the antineutrino flux with minimal systematic uncertainty. Relative detector efficiencies between the near and far detectors are known to better than 0.2%. With the unblinding of the final two detectors' baselines and target masses, a complete description and comparison of the eight antineutrino detectors can now be presented. This paper describes the Daya Bay detector systems, consisting of eight antineutrino detectors in three instrumented water pools in three underground halls, and their operation through the first year of eight detector data-taking.

A new measurement of antineutrino oscillation with the full detector configuration at Daya Bay

We report a new measurement of electron antineutrino disappearance using the fully-constructed Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment. The final two of eight antineutrino detectors were installed in the summer of 2012. Including the 404 days of data collected from October 2012 to November 2013 resulted in a total exposure of 6.9×\times105^5 GWth_{\rm th}-ton-days, a 3.6 times increase over our previous results. Improvements in energy calibration limited variations between detectors to 0.2%. Removal of six 241^{241}Am-13^{13}C radioactive calibration sources reduced the background by a factor of two for the detectors in the experimental hall furthest from the reactors. Direct prediction of the antineutrino signal in the far detectors based on the measurements in the near detectors explicitly minimized the dependence of the measurement on models of reactor antineutrino emission. The uncertainties in our estimates of sin⁡22θ13\sin^{2}2θ_{13} and ∣Δmee2∣|Δm^2_{ee}| were halved as a result of these improvements. Analysis of the relative antineutrino rates and energy spectra between detectors gave sin⁡22θ13=0.084±0.005\sin^{2}2θ_{13} = 0.084\pm0.005 and ∣Δmee2∣=(2.42±0.11)×10−3|Δm^{2}_{ee}|= (2.42\pm0.11) \times 10^{-3} eV2^2 in the three-neutrino framework.

Measurement of the Reactor Antineutrino Flux and Spectrum at Daya Bay

This Letter reports a measurement of the flux and energy spectrum of electron antineutrinos from six 2.9~GWth_{th} nuclear reactors with six detectors deployed in two near (effective baselines 512~m and 561~m) and one far (1,579~m) underground experimental halls in the Daya Bay experiment. Using 217 days of data, 296,721 and 41,589 inverse beta decay (IBD) candidates were detected in the near and far halls, respectively. The measured IBD yield is (1.55 ±\pm 0.04) ×\times 10−18^{-18}~cm2^2/GW/day or (5.92 ±\pm 0.14) ×\times 10−43^{-43}~cm2^2/fission. This flux measurement is consistent with previous short-baseline reactor antineutrino experiments and is 0.946±0.0220.946\pm0.022 (0.991±0.0230.991\pm0.023) relative to the flux predicted with the Huber+Mueller (ILL+Vogel) fissile antineutrino model. The measured IBD positron energy spectrum deviates from both spectral predictions by more than 2σσ over the full energy range with a local significance of up to ∼\sim4σσ between 4-6 MeV. A reactor antineutrino spectrum of IBD reactions is extracted from the measured positron energy spectrum for model-independent predictions.

An improved measurement of the 2νββ half-life of Xe-136 with EXO-200

We report on an improved measurement of the 2νββ half-life of Xe-136 performed by EXO-200. The use of a large and homogeneous time projection chamber allows for the precise estimate of the fiducial mass used for the measurement, resulting in a small systematic uncertainty. We also discuss in detail the data analysis methods used for double-beta decay searches with EXO-200, while emphasizing those directly related to the present measurement. The Xe-136 2νββ half-life is found to be 2.165 +- 0.016 (stat) +- 0.059 (sys) x 10^21 years. This is the most precisely measured half-life of any 2νββ decay to date.

Independent Measurement of Theta13 via Neutron Capture on Hydrogen at Daya Bay

A new measurement of the θ13θ_{13} mixing angle has been obtained at the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment via the detection of inverse beta decays tagged by neutron capture on hydrogen. The antineutrino events for hydrogen capture are distinct from those for gadolinium capture with largely different systematic uncertainties, allowing a determination independent of the gadolinium-capture result and an improvement on the precision of θ13θ_{13} measurement. With a 217-day antineutrino data set obtained with six antineutrino detectors and from six 2.9 GWth_{th} reactors, the rate deficit observed at the far hall is interpreted as sin⁡22θ13=0.083±0.018\sin^22θ_{13}=0.083\pm0.018 in the three-flavor oscillation model. When combined with the gadolinium-capture result from Daya Bay, we obtain sin⁡22θ13=0.089±0.008\sin^22θ_{13}=0.089\pm0.008 as the final result for the six-antineutrino-detector configuration of the Daya Bay experiment.

Search for a Light Sterile Neutrino at Daya Bay

A search for light sterile neutrino mixing was performed with the first 217 days of data from the Daya Bay Reactor Antineutrino Experiment. The experiment's unique configuration of multiple baselines from six 2.9~GWth_{\rm th} nuclear reactors to six antineutrino detectors deployed in two near (effective baselines 512~m and 561~m) and one far (1579~m) underground experimental halls makes it possible to test for oscillations to a fourth (sterile) neutrino in the 10−3 eV2<∣Δm412∣<0.3 eV210^{\rm -3}~{\rm eV}^{2} < |Δm_{41}^{2}| < 0.3~{\rm eV}^{2} range. Search for Majorana neutrinos with the first two years of EXO-200 data

Many extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics suggest that neutrinos should be Majorana-type fermions, but this assumption is difficult to confirm. Observation of neutrinoless double-beta decay (0νββ0νββ), a spontaneous transition that may occur in several candidate nuclei, would verify the Majorana nature of the neutrino and constrain the absolute scale of the neutrino mass spectrum. Recent searches carried out with 76^{76}Ge (GERDA experiment) and 136^{136}Xe (KamLAND-Zen and EXO-200 experiments) have established the lifetime of this decay to be longer than 102510^{25} yr, corresponding to a limit on the neutrino mass of 0.2-0.4 eV. Here we report new results from EXO-200 based on 100 kg⋅\cdotyr of 136^{136}Xe exposure, representing an almost fourfold increase from our earlier published datasets. We have improved the detector resolution at the 136^{136}Xe double-beta-decay Q-value to σσ/E = 1.53% and revised the data analysis. The obtained half-life sensitivity is 1.9⋅10251.9\cdot10^{25} yr, an improvement by a factor of 2.7 compared to previous EXO-200 results. We find no statistically significant evidence for 0νββ0νββ decay and set a half-life limit of 1.1⋅10251.1\cdot10^{25} yr at 90% CL. The high sensitivity holds promise for further running of the EXO-200 detector and future 0νββ0νββ decay searches with nEXO.

Search for Majoron-emitting modes of double-beta decay of 136^{136}Xe with EXO-200

EXO-200 is a single phase liquid xenon detector designed to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay of 136^{136}Xe. Here we report on a search for various Majoron-emitting modes based on 100 kg⋅\cdotyr exposure of 136^{136}Xe. A lower limit of T1/2136Xe>1.2⋅1024T^{^{136}Xe}_{1/2} >1.2 \cdot 10^{24} yr at 90% C.L. on the half-life of the spectral index = 1 Majoron decay was obtained, corresponding to a constraint on the Majoron-neutrino coupling constant of ∣<geeM>∣<|< g^{M}_{ee} >|< (0.8-1.7)⋅\cdot10−5^{-5}.

Spectral measurement of electron antineutrino oscillation amplitude and frequency at Daya Bay

A measurement of the energy dependence of antineutrino disappearance at the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment is reported. Electron antineutrinos (ν‾e\overlineν_{e}) from six 2.92.9 GWth_{\rm th} reactors were detected with six detectors deployed in two near (effective baselines 512 m and 561 m) and one far (1579 m) underground experimental halls. Using 217 days of data, 41589 (203809 and 92912) antineutrino candidates were detected in the far hall (near halls). An improved measurement of the oscillation amplitude sin⁡22θ13=0.090−0.009+0.008\sin^{2}2θ_{13} = 0.090^{+0.008}_{-0.009} and the first direct measurement of the ν‾e\overlineν_{e} mass-squared difference ∣Δmee2∣=(2.59−0.20+0.19)×10−3 eV2|Δm^{2}_{ee}|= (2.59_{-0.20}^{+0.19}) \times 10^{-3}\ {\rm eV}^2 is obtained using the observed ν‾e\overlineν_{e} rates and energy spectra in a three-neutrino framework. This value of ∣Δmee2∣|Δm^{2}_{ee}| is consistent with ∣Δmμμ2∣|Δm^{2}_{μμ}| measured by muon neutrino disappearance, supporting the three-flavor oscillation model.

Spectroscopy of Ba and Ba+^+ deposits in solid xenon for barium tagging in nEXO

Progress on a method of barium tagging for the nEXO double beta decay experiment is reported. Absorption and emission spectra for deposits of barium atoms and ions in solid xenon matrices are presented. Excitation spectra for prominent emission lines, temperature dependence and bleaching of the fluorescence reveal the existence of different matrix sites. A regular series of sharp lines observed in Ba+^+ deposits is identified with some type of barium hydride molecule. Lower limits for the fluorescence quantum efficiency of the principal Ba emission transition are reported. Under current conditions, an image of ≤104\le10^4 Ba atoms can be obtained. Prospects for imaging single Ba atoms in solid xenon are discussed.

Assembly and Installation of the Daya Bay Antineutrino Detectors

The Daya Bay reactor antineutrino experiment is designed to make a precision measurement of the neutrino mixing angle theta13, and recently made the definitive discovery of its nonzero value. It utilizes a set of eight, functionally identical antineutrino detectors to measure the reactor flux and spectrum at baselines of 300 - 2000m from the Daya Bay and Ling Ao Nuclear Power Plants. The Daya Bay antineutrino detectors were built in an above-ground facility and deployed side-by-side at three underground experimental sites near and far from the nuclear reactors. This configuration allows the experiment to make a precision measurement of reactor antineutrino disappearance over km-long baselines and reduces relative systematic uncertainties between detectors and nuclear reactors. This paper describes the assembly and installation of the Daya Bay antineutrino detectors.

A side-by-side comparison of Daya Bay antineutrino detectors

The Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment is designed to determine precisely the neutrino mixing angle θ13θ_{13} with a sensitivity better than 0.01 in the parameter sin22θ13^22θ_{13} at the 90% confidence level. To achieve this goal, the collaboration will build eight functionally identical antineutrino detectors. The first two detectors have been constructed, installed and commissioned in Experimental Hall 1, with steady data-taking beginning September 23, 2011. A comparison of the data collected over the subsequent three months indicates that the detectors are functionally identical, and that detector-related systematic uncertainties exceed requirements.

Improved Measurement of Electron Antineutrino Disappearance at Daya Bay

We report an improved measurement of the neutrino mixing angle θ13θ_{13} from the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment. We exclude a zero value for sin⁡22θ13\sin^22θ_{13} with a significance of 7.7 standard deviations. Electron antineutrinos from six reactors of 2.9 GWth_{\rm th} were detected in six antineutrino detectors deployed in two near (flux-weighted baselines of 470 m and 576 m) and one far (1648 m) underground experimental halls. Using 139 days of data, 28909 (205308) electron antineutrino candidates were detected at the far hall (near halls). The ratio of the observed to the expected number of antineutrinos assuming no oscillations at the far hall is 0.944±0.007(stat.)±0.003(syst.)0.944\pm 0.007({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.003({\rm syst.}). An analysis of the relative rates in six detectors finds sin⁡22θ13=0.089±0.010(stat.)±0.005(syst.)\sin^22θ_{13}=0.089\pm 0.010({\rm stat.})\pm0.005({\rm syst.}) in a three-neutrino framework.

Observation of electron-antineutrino disappearance at Daya Bay

The Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment has measured a non-zero value for the neutrino mixing angle θ13θ_{13} with a significance of 5.2 standard deviations. Antineutrinos from six 2.9 GWth_{\rm th} reactors were detected in six antineutrino detectors deployed in two near (flux-weighted baseline 470 m and 576 m) and one far (1648 m) underground experimental halls. With a 43,000 ton-GW_{\rm th}-day livetime exposure in 55 days, 10416 (80376) electron antineutrino candidates were detected at the far hall (near halls). The ratio of the observed to expected number of antineutrinos at the far hall is R=0.940±0.011(stat)±0.004(syst)R=0.940\pm 0.011({\rm stat}) \pm 0.004({\rm syst}). A rate-only analysis finds sin⁡22θ13=0.092±0.016(stat)±0.005(syst)\sin^22θ_{13}=0.092\pm 0.016({\rm stat})\pm0.005({\rm syst}) in a three-neutrino framework.
