Pulse dynamics of flexural waves in transformed plates

Coordinate-transformation-inspired optical devices have been mostly examined in the continuous-wave regime: the performance of an invisibility cloak, which has been demonstrated for monochromatic excitation, %would inevitably is likely to deteriorate for short pulses. Here we investigate pulse dynamics of flexural waves propagating in transformed plates. We propose a practical realization of a waveshifter and a rotator for flexural waves based on the coordinate transformation method. Time-resolved measurements reveal how the waveshifter deviates a short pulse from its initial trajectory, with no reflection at the bend and no spatial and temporal distortion of the pulse. Extending our strategy to cylindrical coordinates, we design a wave rotator. We demonstrate experimentally how a pulsed plane wave is twisted inside the rotator, while its wavefront is recovered behind the rotator and the pulse shape is preserved, with no extra time delay. We propose the realization of the dynamical mirage effect, where an obstacle appears oriented in a deceptive direction.

Making sound vortices by metasurfaces

Based on the Huygens-Fresnel principle, a metasurface structure is designed to generate a sound vortex beam in airborne environment. The metasurface is constructed by a thin planar plate perforated with a circular array of deep subwavelength resonators with desired phase and amplitude responses. The metasurface approach in making sound vortices is validated well by full-wave simulations and experimental measurements. Potential applications of such artificial spiral beams can be anticipated, as exemplified experimentally by the torque effect exerting on an absorbing disk.

A new method to suppress high-order harmonics for synchrotron radiation soft x-ray beamline

A feasible and convenient method has been proposed to suppress higher-harmonics for varied-line-spacing (VLS) plane grating monochromator in soft x-ray region. Related calculations and experiments demonstrate that decreasing the included angle slightly by changing the parameter of exit arm length can significantly improve light purity. This method is suitable and has been used for experiments of detector calibration in beamline 4B7B at Beijing Synchrotron Radiation Facility (BSRF).

A new soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism facility at the BSRF beamline 4B7B

X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) has become an important and powerful tool because it allows the study of material properties in combination with elemental specificity, chemical state specificity, and magnetic specificity. A new soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism apparatus has been developed at the Beijing Synchrotron Radiation Facility (BSRF). The apparatus combines three experimental conditions: ultra-high-vacuum environment, moderate magnetic fields and in-situ sample preparation to measure the absorption signal. We designed a C type dipole electromagnet that provides magnetic fields up to 0.5T in parallel (or anti-parallel) direction relative to the incoming X-ray beam. The performances of the electromagnet are measured and the results show good agreement with the simulation ones. Following film grown in situ by evaporation methods, XMCD measurements are performed. Combined polarization corrections, the magnetic moments of the Fe and Co films determined by sum rules are consistent with other theoretical predictions and experimental measurements.

Focusing and directional beaming effects of airborne sound through a planar lens with zigzag slits

Based on the Huygens-Fresnel principle we design a planar lens to efficiently realize the interconversion of the point-like source and Gaussian beam in the air ambience. The lens is constructed by a planar plate drilled elaborately with a nonuniform array of zigzag slits, where the slit exits act as subwavelength-sized secondary sources carrying desired sound responses. The experiments operated at audible regime agree well with the theoretical predictions. This compact device could be useful in daily life applications, such as for medical and detection purposes.

Highly efficient anomalous refraction of airborne sound through ultrathin metasurfaces

Similar to their optic counterparts, acoustic components are anticipated to flexibly tailor the propagation of sound. However, the practical applications, e.g. for audible sound with large wavelengths, are frequently hampered by the issue of device thickness. Here we present an effective design of metasurface structures that can deflect the transmitted airborne sound in an anomalous way. This flat lens, made of spatially varied coiling-slit subunits, has a thickness of deep subwavelength. By elaborately optimizing its microstructures, the proposed lens exhibits high performance in steering sound wavefronts. The experimental results are in excellent agreement with the theoretical predictions. This study may open new avenues for numerous daily life applications, such as controlling indoor sound effects by decorating rooms with light metasurface walls.

Academic Ranking with Web Mining and Axiomatic Analysis

Academic ranking is a public topic, such as for universities, colleges, or departments, which has significant educational, administrative and social effects. Popular ranking systems include the US News & World Report (USNWR), the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), and others. The most popular observables for such ranking are academic publications and their citations. However, a rigorous, quantitative and thorough methodology has been missing for this purpose. With modern web technology and axiomatic bibliometric analysis, here we perform a feasibility study on Microsoft Academic Search metadata and obtain the first-of-its-kind ranking results for American departments of computer science. This approach can be extended for fully automatic intuitional and college ranking based on comprehensive data on Internet.

Automatic landmark annotation and dense correspondence registration for 3D human facial images

Dense surface registration of three-dimensional (3D) human facial images holds great potential for studies of human trait diversity, disease genetics, and forensics. Non-rigid registration is particularly useful for establishing dense anatomical correspondences between faces. Here we describe a novel non-rigid registration method for fully automatic 3D facial image mapping. This method comprises two steps: first, seventeen facial landmarks are automatically annotated, mainly via PCA-based feature recognition following 3D-to-2D data transformation. Second, an efficient thin-plate spline (TPS) protocol is used to establish the dense anatomical correspondence between facial images, under the guidance of the predefined landmarks. We demonstrate that this method is robust and highly accurate, even for different ethnicities. The average face is calculated for individuals of Han Chinese and Uyghur origins. While fully automatic and computationally efficient, this method enables high-throughput analysis of human facial feature variation.
