Idempotent Fourier multipliers acting contractively on $H^p$ spaces

We describe the idempotent Fourier multipliers that act contractively on $H^p$ spaces of the $d$-dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}^d$ for $d\geq 1$ and $1\leq p \leq \infty$. When $p$ is not an even integer, such multipliers are just restrictions of contractive idempotent multipliers on $L^p$ spaces, which in turn can be described by suitably combining results of Rudin and Andô. When $p=2(n+1)$, with $n$ a positive integer, contractivity depends in an interesting geometric way on $n$, $d$, and the dimension of the set of frequencies associated with the multiplier. Our results allow us to construct a linear operator that is densely defined on $H^p(\mathbb{T}^\infty)$ for every $1 \leq p \leq \infty$ and that extends to a bounded operator if and only if $p=2,4,\ldots,2(n+1)$.

Gál-type GCD sums beyond the critical line

We prove that \[ \sum_{k,{\ell}=1}^N\frac{(n_k,n_{\ell})^{2α}}{(n_k n_{\ell})^α} \ll N^{2-2α} (\log N)^{b(α)} \] holds for arbitrary integers $1\le n_1<\cdots < n_N$ and $0<α<1/2$ and show by an example that this bound is optimal, up to the precise value of the exponent $b(α)$. This estimate complements recent results for $1/2\le α\le 1$ and shows that there is no "trace" of the functional equation for the Riemann zeta function in estimates for such GCD sums when $0<α<1/2$.

The multiplicative Hilbert matrix

It is observed that the infinite matrix with entries $(\sqrt{mn}\log (mn))^{-1}$ for $m, n\ge 2$ appears as the matrix of the integral operator $\mathbf{H}f(s):=\int_{1/2}^{+\infty}f(w)(ζ(w+s)-1)dw$ with respect to the basis $(n^{-s})_{n\ge 2}$; here $ζ(s)$ is the Riemann zeta function and $H$ is defined on the Hilbert space ${\mathcal H}^2_0$ of Dirichlet series vanishing at $+\infty$ and with square-summable coefficients. This infinite matrix defines a multiplicative Hankel operator according to Helson's terminology or, alternatively, it can be viewed as a bona fide (small) Hankel operator on the infinite-dimensional torus ${\Bbb T}^{\infty}$. By analogy with the standard integral representation of the classical Hilbert matrix, this matrix is referred to as the multiplicative Hilbert matrix. It is shown that its norm equals $π$ and that it has a purely continuous spectrum which is the interval $[0,π]$; these results are in agreement with known facts about the classical Hilbert matrix. It is shown that the matrix $(m^{1/p} n^{(p-1)/p}\log (mn))^{-1}$ has norm $π/\sin(π/p)$ when acting on $\ell^p$ for $1<p<\infty$. However, the multiplicative Hilbert matrix fails to define a bounded operator on ${\mathcal H}^p_0$ for $p\neq 2$, where ${\mathcal H}^p_0$ are $H^p$ spaces of Dirichlet series. It remains an interesting problem to decide whether the analytic symbol $\sum_{n\ge 2} (\log n)^{-1} n^{-s-1/2}$ of the multiplicative Hilbert matrix arises as the Riesz projection of a bounded function on the infinite-dimensional torus ${\Bbb T}^\infty$.

An inequality of Hardy--Littlewood type for Dirichlet polynomials

The $L^q$ norm of a Dirichlet polynomial $F(s)=\sum_{n=1}^{N} a_n n^{-s}$ is defined as \[\| F\|_q:=(\lim_{T\to\infty}\frac{1}{T}\int_{0}^T |F(it)|^qdt)^{1/q}\] for $0<q<\infty$. It is shown that \[ (\sum_{n=1}^{N} |a_n|^2|μ(n)|[d(n)]^{\frac{\log q}{\log 2} -1})^{1/2}\le \| F\|_q \] when $0<q<2$; here $μ$ is the Möbius function and $d$ the divisor function. This result is used to prove that the $L^q$ norm of $D_N(s):=\sum_{n=1}^{N} n^{-1/2-s}$ satisfies $\|D_N\|_q\gg (\log N)^{q/4}$ for $0<q<\infty$. By Helson's generalization of the M. Riesz theorem on the conjugation operator, the reverse inequality $\|D_N\|_q \ll (\log N)^{q/4}$ is shown to be valid in the range $1<q<\infty$. Similar bounds are found for a fairly large class of Dirichlet series including, on one of Selberg's conjectures, the Selberg class of $L$-functions.

Approximation numbers of composition operators on $H^p$ spaces of Dirichlet series

By a theorem of Bayart, $φ$ generates a bounded composition operator on the Hardy space $\Hp$of Dirichlet series ($1\le p<\infty$) only if $φ(s)=c_0 s+ψ(s)$, where $c_0$ is a nonnegative integer and $ψ$ a Dirichlet series with the following mapping properties: $ψ$ maps the right half-plane into the half-plane $\Real s >1/2$ if $c_0=0$ and is either identically zero or maps the right half-plane into itself if $c_0$ is positive. It is shown that the $n$th approximation numbers of bounded composition operators on $\Hp$ are bounded below by a constant times $r^n$ for some $0<r<1$ when $c_0=0$ and bounded below by a constant times $n^{-A}$ for some $A>0$ when $c_0$ is positive. Both results are best possible. Estimates rely on a combination of soft tools from Banach space theory ($s$-numbers, type and cotype of Banach spaces, Weyl inequalities, and Schauder bases) and a certain interpolation method for $\Ht$, developed in an earlier paper, using estimates of solutions of the $\overline{\partial}$ equation. A transference principle from $H^p$ of the unit disc is discussed, leading to explicit examples of compact composition operators on $\Ho$ with approximation numbers decaying at a variety of sub-exponential rates. Finally, a new Littlewood--Paley formula is established, yielding a sufficient condition for a composition operator on $\Hp$ to be compact.

Approximation numbers of composition operators on the $H^2$ space of Dirichlet series

By a theorem of Gordon and Hedenmalm, $φ$ generates a bounded composition operator on the Hilbert space $\mathscr{H}^2$ of Dirichlet series $\sum_n b_n n^{-s}$ with square-summable coefficients $b_n$ if and only if $φ(s)=c_0 s+ψ(s)$, where $c_0$ is a nonnegative integer and $ψ$ a Dirichlet series with the following mapping properties: $ψ$ maps the right half-plane into the half-plane $\operatorname{Re} s >1/2$ if $c_0=0$ and is either identically zero or maps the right half-plane into itself if $c_0$ is positive. It is shown that the $n$th approximation numbers of bounded composition operators on $\mathscr{H}^2$ are bounded below by a constant times $r^n$ for some $0<r<1$ when $c_0=0$ and bounded below by a constant times $n^{-A}$ for some $A>0$ when $c_0$ is positive. Both results are best possible. The case when $c_0=0$, $ψ$ is bounded and smooth up to the boundary of the right half-plane, and $\sup \operatorname{Re} ψ=1/2$, is discussed in depth; it includes examples of non-compact operators as well as operators belonging to all Schatten classes $S_p$. For $φ(s)=c_1+\sum_{j=1}^d c_{q_j} q_j^{-s}$ with $q_j$ independent integers, it is shown that the $n$th approximation number behaves as $n^{-(d-1)/2}$, possibly up to a factor $(\log n)^{(d-1)/2}$. Estimates rely mainly on a general Hilbert space method involving finite linear combinations of reproducing kernels. A key role is played by a recently developed interpolation method for $\mathscr{H}^2$ using estimates of solutions of the $\bar{\partial}$ equation. Finally, by a transference principle from $H^2$ of the unit disc, explicit examples of compact composition operators with approximation numbers decaying at essentially any sub-exponential rate can be displayed.

Convergence of series of dilated functions and spectral norms of GCD matrices

We establish a connection between the $L^2$ norm of sums of dilated functions whose $j$th Fourier coefficients are $\mathcal{O}(j^{-α})$ for some $α\in (1/2,1)$, and the spectral norms of certain greatest common divisor (GCD) matrices. Utilizing recent bounds for these spectral norms, we obtain sharp conditions for the convergence in $L^2$ and for the almost everywhere convergence of series of dilated functions.

GCD sums and complete sets of square-free numbers

It is proved that \[ \sum_{k,{\ell}=1}^N\frac{\gcd(n_k,n_{\ell})}{\sqrt{n_k n_{\ell}}} \ll N\exp\left(C\sqrt{\frac{\log N \log\log\log N}{\log\log N}}\right) \] holds for arbitrary integers $1\le n_1<\cdots < n_N$. This bound is essentially better than that found in a recent paper of Aistleitner, Berkes, and Seip and can not be improved by more than possibly a power of $1/\sqrt{\log\log\log N}$. The proof relies on ideas from classical work of Gál, the method of Aistleitner, Berkes, and Seip, and a certain completeness property of extremal sets of square-free numbers.

Decay rates for approximation numbers of composition operators

A general method for estimating the approximation numbers of composition operators on $\Ht$, using finite-dimensional model subspaces, is studied and applied in the case when the symbol of the operator maps the unit disc to a domain whose boundary meets the unit circle at just one point. The exact rate of decay of the approximation numbers is identified when this map is sufficiently smooth at the point of tangency; it follows that a composition operator with any prescribed slow decay of its approximation numbers can be explicitly constructed. Similarly, an asymptotic expression for the approximation numbers is found when the mapping has a sharp cusp at the distinguished boundary point. Precise asymptotic estimates in the intermediate cases, including that of maps with a corner at the distinguished boundary point, are also established.

GCD sums from Poisson integrals and systems of dilated functions

Upper bounds for GCD sums of the form [\sum_{k,{\ell}=1}^N\frac{(\gcd(n_k,n_{\ell}))^{2α}}{(n_k n_{\ell})^α}] are proved, where $(n_k)_{1 \leq k \leq N}$ is any sequence of distinct positive integers and $0<α\le 1$; the estimate for $α=1/2$ solves in particular a problem of Dyer and Harman from 1986, and the estimates are optimal except possibly for $α=1/2$. The method of proof is based on identifying the sum as a certain Poisson integral on a polydisc; as a byproduct, estimates for the largest eigenvalues of the associated GCD matrices are also found. The bounds for such GCD sums are used to establish a Carleson--Hunt-type inequality for systems of dilated functions of bounded variation or belonging to $\lip12$, a result that in turn settles two longstanding problems on the a.e.\ behavior of systems of dilated functions: the a.e. growth of sums of the form $\sum_{k=1}^N f(n_k x)$ and the a.e.\ convergence of $\sum_{k=1}^\infty c_k f(n_kx)$ when $f$ is 1-periodic and of bounded variation or in $\lip12$.

Zeros of functions in Hilbert spaces of Dirichlet series

The Dirichlet--Hardy space $\Ht$ consists of those Dirichlet series $\sum_n a_n n^{-s}$ for which $\sum_n |a_n|^2<\infty$. It is shown that the Blaschke condition in the half-plane $\operatorname{Re} s>1/2$ is a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a nontrivial function $f$ in $\Ht$ vanishing on a given bounded sequence. The proof implies in fact a stronger result: every function in the Hardy space $H^2$ of the half-plane $\operatorname{Re} s>1/2$ can be interpolated by a function in $\Ht$ on such a Blaschke sequence. Analogous results are proved for the Hilbert space $\Da$ of Dirichlet series $\sum_n a_n n^{-s}$ for which $\sum_n |a_n|^2[d(n)]^α<\infty$; here $d(n)$ is the divisor function and $α$ a positive parameter. In this case, the zero sets are related locally to the zeros of functions in weighted Dirichlet spaces of the half-plane $\operatorname{Re} s>1/2$. Partial results are then obtained for the zeros of functions in $\Hp$ ($L^p$ analogues of $\Ht$) for $2<p<\infty$, based on certain contractive embeddings of $\Da$ in $\Hp$.

A lower bound in Nehari's theorem on the polydisc

By theorems of Ferguson and Lacey (d=2) and Lacey and Terwilleger (d>2), Nehari's theorem is known to hold on the polydisc D^d for d>1, i.e., if H_ψis a bounded Hankel form on H^2(D^d) with analytic symbol ψ, then there is a function ϕin L^\infty(\T^d) such that ψis the Riesz projection of ϕ. A method proposed in Helson's last paper is used to show that the constant C_d in the estimate \|ϕ\|_\infty\le C_d \|H_ψ\| grows at least exponentially with d; it follows that there is no analogue of Nehari's theorem on the infinite-dimensional polydisc.

Hankel operators on Fock spaces and related Bergman kernel estimates

Hankel operators with anti-holomorphic symbols are studied for a large class of weighted Fock spaces on $\cn$. The weights defining these Hilbert spaces are radial and subject to a mild smoothness condition. In addition, it is assumed that the weights decay at least as fast as the classical Gaussian weight. The main result of the paper says that a Hankel operator on such a Fock space is bounded if and only if the symbol belongs to a certain BMOA space, defined via the Berezin transform. The latter space coincides with a corresponding Bloch space which is defined by means of the Bergman metric. This characterization of boundedness relies on certain precise estimates for the Bergman kernel and the Bergman metric. Characterizations of compact Hankel operators and Schatten class Hankel operators are also given. In the latter case, results on Carleson measures and Toeplitz operators along with Hörmander's $L^2$ estimates for the $\bar{\partial}$ operator are key ingredients in the proof.

$L^\infty$ to $L^p$ constants for Riesz projections

The norm of the Riesz projection from $L^\infty(\T^n)$ to $L^p(\T^n)$ is considered. It is shown that for $n=1$, the norm equals $1$ if and only if $p\le 4$ and that the norm behaves asymptotically as $p/(πe)$ when $p\to \infty$. The critical exponent $p_n$ is the supremum of those $p$ for which the norm equals $1$. It is proved that $2+2/(2^n-1)\le p_n <4$ for $n>1$; it is unknown whether the critical exponent for $n=\infty$ exceeds $2$.

Unitary discrete Hilbert transforms

Weighted discrete Hilbert transforms $(a_n)_n \mapsto \big(\sum_n a_n v_n/(λ_j-γ_n)\big)_j$ from $\ell^2_v$ to $\ell^2_w$ are considered, where $Γ=(γ_n)$ and $Λ=(λ_j)$ are disjoint sequences of points in the complex plane and $v=(v_n)$ and $w=(w_j)$ are positive weight sequences. It is shown that if such a Hilbert transform is unitary, then $Γ\cupΛ$ is a subset of a circle or a straight line, and a description of all unitary discrete Hilbert transforms is then given. A characterization of the orthogonal bases of reproducing kernels introduced by L. de Branges and D. Clark is implicit in these results: If a Hilbert space of complex-valued functions defined on a subset of $\CC$ satisfies a few basic axioms and has more than one orthogonal basis of reproducing kernels, then these bases are all of Clark's type.

Discrete Hilbert transforms on sparse sequences

Weighted discrete Hilbert transforms $(a_n)_n \mapsto \sum_n a_n v_n/(z-γ_n)$ from $\ell^2_v$ to a weighted $L^2$ space are studied, with $Γ=(γ_n)$ a sequence of distinct points in the complex plane and $v=(v_n)$ a corresponding sequence of positive numbers. In the special case when $|γ_n|$ grows at least exponentially, bounded transforms of this kind are described in terms of a simple relative to the Muckenhoupt $(A_2)$ condition. The special case when $z$ is restricted to another sequence $Λ$ is studied in detail; it is shown that a bounded transform satisfying a certain admissibility condition can be split into finitely many surjective transforms, and precise geometric conditions are found for invertibility of such two weight transforms. These results can be interpreted as statements about systems of reproducing kernels in certain Hilbert spaces of which de Branges spaces and model subspaces of $H^2$ are prime examples. In particular, a connection to the Feichtinger conjecture is pointed out. Descriptions of Carleson measures and Riesz bases of normalized reproducing kernels for certain "small" de Branges spaces follow from the results of this paper.

The Bohnenblust--Hille inequality for homogeneous polynomials is hypercontractive

The Bohnenblust--Hille inequality says that the $\ell^{\frac{2m}{m+1}}$-norm of the coefficients of an $m$-homogeneous polynomial $P$ on $\C^n$ is bounded by $\| P\|_\infty$ times a constant independent of $n$, where $\|\cdot \|_\infty$ denotes the supremum norm on the polydisc $\D^n$. The main result of this paper is that this inequality is hypercontractive, i.e., the constant can be taken to be $C^m$ for some $C>1$. Combining this improved version of the Bohnenblust--Hille inequality with other results, we obtain the following: The Bohr radius for the polydisc $\D^n$ behaves asymptotically as $\sqrt{(\log n)/n}$ modulo a factor bounded away from 0 and infinity, and the Sidon constant for the set of frequencies $\bigl\{\log n: n \text{a positive integer} \le N\bigr\}$ is $\sqrt{N}\exp\{(-1/\sqrt{2}+o(1))\sqrt{\log N\log\log N}\}$ as $N\to \infty$.

Integral means and boundary limits of Dirichlet series

We study the boundary behavior of functions in the Hardy spaces HD^p for ordinary Dirichlet series. Our main result, answering a question of H. Hedenmalm, shows that the classical F. Carlson theorem on integral means does not extend to the imaginary axis for functions in HD^\infty, i.e., for ordinary Dirichlet series in H^\infty of the right half-plane. We discuss an important embedding problem for HD^p, the solution of which is only known when p is an even integer. Viewing HD^p as Hardy spaces of the infinite-dimensional polydisc, we also present analogues of Fatou's theorem.

Local interpolation in Hilbert spaces of Dirichlet series

We denote by $\Hp$ the Hilbert space of ordinary Dirichlet series with square-summable coefficients. The main result is that a bounded sequence of points in the half-plane $σ>1/2$ is an interpolating sequence for $\Hp$ if and only if it is an interpolating sequence for the Hardy space $H^2$ of the same half-plane. Similar local results are obtained for Hilbert spaces of ordinary Dirichlet series that relate to Bergman and Dirichlet spaces of the half-plane $σ>1/2$.

A Hilbert space of Dirichlet series and systems of dilated functions in $L^2(0,1)$

For a function $φ$ in $L^2(0,1)$, extended to the whole real line as an odd periodic function of period 2, we ask when the collection of dilates $φ(nx)$, $n=1,2,3,\ldots$, constitutes a Riesz basis or a complete sequence in $L^2(0,1)$. The problem translates into a question concerning multipliers and cyclic vectors in the Hilbert space $\cal H$ of Dirichlet series $f(s)=\sum_n a_nn^{-s}$, where the coefficients $a_n$ are square summable. It proves useful to model $\cal H$ as the $H^2$ space of the infinite-dimensional polydisk, or, which is the same, the $H^2$ space of the character space, where a character is a multiplicative homomorphism from the positive integers to the unit circle. For given $f$ in $\cal H$ and characters $χ$, $f_χ(s)=\sum_na_nχ(n)n^{-s}$ is a vertical limit function of $f$. We study certain probabilistic properties of these vertical limit functions.

Complete interpolating sequences for Paley-Wiener spaces and Muckenhoupt's $(A_p)$ condition

We describe the complete interpolating sequences for the Paley-Wiener spaces $L^p_π$ ($1<p<\infty$) in terms of Muckenhoupt's $(A_p)$ condition. For $p=2$, this description coincides with those given by Pavlov (1979), Nikol'skii (1980), and Minkin (1992) of the unconditional bases of complex exponentials in $L^2(-π,π)$. While the techniques of these authors are linked to the Hilbert space geometry of $L^2_π$, our method of proof is based on turning the problem into one about boundedness of the Hilbert transform in certain weighted $L^p$ spaces of functions and sequences.

Density theorems for sampling and interpolation in the Bargmann-Fock space

We give a complete description of sampling and interpolation in the Bargmann-Fock space, based on a density concept of Beurling. Roughly speaking, a discrete set is a set of sampling if and only if its density in every part of the plane is strictly larger than that of the von Neumann lattice, and similarly, a discrete set is a set of interpolation if and only if its density in every part of the plane is strictly smaller than that of the von Neumann lattice.
