Gál-type GCD sums beyond the critical line

We prove that ∑k,ℓ=1N(nk,nℓ)2α(nknℓ)α≪N2−2α(log⁡N)b(α) \sum_{k,{\ell}=1}^N\frac{(n_k,n_{\ell})^{2α}}{(n_k n_{\ell})^α} \ll N^{2-2α} (\log N)^{b(α)} holds for arbitrary integers 1≤n1<⋯<nN1\le n_1<\cdots < n_N and 0<α<1/20<α<1/2 and show by an example that this bound is optimal, up to the precise value of the exponent b(α)b(α). This estimate complements recent results for 1/2≤α≤11/2\le α\le 1 and shows that there is no "trace" of the functional equation for the Riemann zeta function in estimates for such GCD sums when 0<α<1/20<α<1/2.

An inequality of Hardy--Littlewood type for Dirichlet polynomials

The LqL^q norm of a Dirichlet polynomial F(s)=∑n=1Nann−sF(s)=\sum_{n=1}^{N} a_n n^{-s} is defined as ∥F∥q:=(lim⁡T→∞1T∫0T∣F(it)∣qdt)1/q\| F\|_q:=(\lim_{T\to\infty}\frac{1}{T}\int_{0}^T |F(it)|^qdt)^{1/q} for 0<q<∞0<q<\infty. It is shown that (∑n=1N∣an∣2∣μ(n)∣[d(n)]log⁡qlog⁡2−1)1/2≤∥F∥q (\sum_{n=1}^{N} |a_n|^2|μ(n)|[d(n)]^{\frac{\log q}{\log 2} -1})^{1/2}\le \| F\|_q when 0<q<20<q<2; here μμ is the Möbius function and dd the divisor function. This result is used to prove that the LqL^q norm of DN(s):=∑n=1Nn−1/2−sD_N(s):=\sum_{n=1}^{N} n^{-1/2-s} satisfies ∥DN∥q≫(log⁡N)q/4\|D_N\|_q\gg (\log N)^{q/4} for 0<q<∞0<q<\infty. By Helson's generalization of the M. Riesz theorem on the conjugation operator, the reverse inequality ∥DN∥q≪(log⁡N)q/4\|D_N\|_q \ll (\log N)^{q/4} is shown to be valid in the range 1<q<∞1<q<\infty. Similar bounds are found for a fairly large class of Dirichlet series including, on one of Selberg's conjectures, the Selberg class of LL-functions.

Helson's problem for sums of a random multiplicative function

We consider the random functions SN(z):=∑n=1Nz(n)S_N(z):=\sum_{n=1}^N z(n) , where z(n)z(n) is the completely multiplicative random function generated by independent Steinhaus variables z(p)z(p). It is shown that E∣SN∣≫N(log⁡N)−0.05616{\Bbb E} |S_N|\gg \sqrt{N}(\log N)^{-0.05616} and that (E∣SN∣q)1/q≫qN(log⁡N)−0.07672({\Bbb E} |S_N|^q)^{1/q}\gg_{q} \sqrt{N}(\log N)^{-0.07672} for all q>0q>0.

GCD sums and complete sets of square-free numbers

It is proved that ∑k,ℓ=1Ngcd⁡(nk,nℓ)nknℓ≪Nexp⁡(Clog⁡Nlog⁡log⁡log⁡Nlog⁡log⁡N) \sum_{k,{\ell}=1}^N\frac{\gcd(n_k,n_{\ell})}{\sqrt{n_k n_{\ell}}} \ll N\exp\left(C\sqrt{\frac{\log N \log\log\log N}{\log\log N}}\right) holds for arbitrary integers 1≤n1<⋯<nN1\le n_1<\cdots < n_N. This bound is essentially better than that found in a recent paper of Aistleitner, Berkes, and Seip and can not be improved by more than possibly a power of 1/log⁡log⁡log⁡N1/\sqrt{\log\log\log N}. The proof relies on ideas from classical work of Gál, the method of Aistleitner, Berkes, and Seip, and a certain completeness property of extremal sets of square-free numbers.

Bernstein inequalities with nondoubling weights

We answer Totik's question on weighted Bernstein's inequalities showing that ∥Tn′∥Lp(ω)≤C(p,ω) n ∥Tn∥Lp(ω),0<p≤∞, \|T_n'\|_{L_p(ω)} \le C(p,ω)\, {n}\,\|T_n\|_{L_p(ω)},\qquad 0<p\le \infty, holds for all trigonometric polynomials TnT_n and certain nondoubling weights ωω. Moreover, we find necessary conditions on ωω for Bernstein's inequality to hold. We also prove weighted Bernstein-Markov, Remez, and Nikolskii inequalities for trigonometric and algebraic polynomials.
