Anti-parity-time topologically undefined state

We constructed an anti-parity-time-symmetric photonic lattice by using perturbations. The results show the topological state will appear when the waveguide coupling constants $κ_1<κ_2$; Interestingly, a state with undefined winding numbers occurs when $κ_1=κ_2$, in which the light distributes only in the wide waveguides with equal magnitude distribution. Further studies show that the edge state will be strengthened by introducing defect for the topologically non-trivial case, while it will not affect the equal intensity transmission for the topologically undefined state. Our work provides a new way to realize the topological state and equally divided light transmission and might be applicable in optical circuits and optical interconnect.

Plasma waves excited at interface by femtosecond laser irradiation enabling formation of volume nanograting in glass

Irradiation of intense ultrafast laser pulses in glasses can lead to formation of nanogratings whose periods are significantly smaller than the incident irradiation wavelength. The mechanism of the exotic phenomenon is still under debate. Here, we access the snapshots of morphologies in the laser affected regions in a porous glass which reveal the evolution of the formation of nanogratings with increasing number of laser pulses. Combined with further theoretical analyses, our observation provides important clues which suggest that excitation of standing plasma waves at the interfaces between areas modified and unmodified by the femtosecond laser irradiation plays a crucial role for promoting the growth of periodic nanogratings. The finding indicates that the formation of volume nanogratings induced by irradiation of femtosecond laser pulses is initiated with a mechanism similar to the formation of surface nanoripples.

Low-threshold whispering-gallery-mode microlasers fabricated in a Nd: glass substrate by three-dimensional femtosecond laser micromachining

We report on fabrication of whispering-gallery-mode microlasers in a Nd:glass chip by femtosecond laser three-dimensional (3D) micromachining. Main fabrication procedures include the fabrication of freestanding microdisks supported by thin pillars by femtosecond laser ablation of the glass substrate immersed in water, followed by CO2 laser annealing for surface smoothing. Lasing is observed at a pump threshold as low as ~69 μW at room temperature with a continuous-wave laser diode operating at 780nm. This technique allows for fabrication of microcavities of high quality factors in various dielectric materials such as glasses and crystals.

Femtosecond laser nanostructuring in glass with sub-50nm feature sizes

We report on controllable production of nanostructures embedded in a porous glass substrate by femtosecond laser direct writing. We show that a hollow nano-void with a lateral size of ~40 nm and an axial size of ~1500 nm can be achieved by manipulating the peak intensity and polarization of the writing laser beam. Our finding enables direct construction of 3D nanofluidics inside glass.
