Broadband highly efficient nonlinear optical processes in on-chip integrated lithium niobate microdisk resonators of Q-factor above 10^8

We demonstrated broadband highly efficient optical nonlinear processes in on-chip integrated lithium niobate (LN) microdisk resonators. The Q factors of the micro-resonators fabricated by femtosecond laser writing and chemo-mechanical polishing are reliably above 10^8, approaching the intrinsic material absorption limit of LN. Broadband nonlinear processes, including optical parametric oscillation (OPO), second harmonic generation (SHG), third harmonic generation, and fourth harmonic generation, were observed with ultrahigh efficiencies in the same LN microdisk without introducing domain inversion, thanks to the natural quasi phase-matching and the dense spectral modes of the X-cut LN microdisk with millimeter diameter. The threshold of OPO and the absolute conversion efficiency of SHG are 19.6 microwatt and 66%, both surpass the state-of-the-art values among on-chip LN micro-resonators demonstrated so far. The broadband and highly efficient nonlinear frequency conversions achieved with the ultrahigh-Q LN microdisk resonators promise high-density integration of nonlinear photonic devices such as frequency convertors and entangled photon sources.

A spectrally bright wavelength-switchable vacuum ultraviolet source driven by quantum coherence in strong-field-ionized molecules

We report generation of spectrally bright vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) and deep UV (DUV) coherent radiations driven by quantum coherence in tunnel-ionized carbon monoxide (CO) molecules. Our technique allows us to switch between multiple wavelengths provided by the abundant energy levels of molecular ions. The DUV/VUV sources can have arbitrary polarization states by manipulating the pump laser polarization. The superior temporal and spectral properties of the developed source give rise to a broadband Raman comb in the DUV/VUV region.

Fabrication of polarization-independent single-mode waveguides in lithium niobate crystal with femtosecond laser pulses

We report on fabrication of depressed cladding optical waveguides buried in lithium niobate crystal with shaped femtosecond laser pulses. Depressed cladding waveguides of variable mode-field sizes are fabricated by forming the four sides of the cladding using a slit-beam shaping technique. We show that the waveguides fabricated by our technique allows single-mode propagation of the light polarized in both vertical and horizontal directions.

High-throughput in-volume processing in glass with isotropic spatial resolutions in three dimensions

We report on fabrication of three dimensional (3D) microstructures in glass with isotropic spatial resolutions. To achieve high throughput fabrication, we expand the focal spot size with a low-numerical-aperture lens, which naturally results in a degraded axial resolution. We solve the problem with simultaneous spatial temporal focusing which leads to an isotropic laser-affected volume with a spatial resolution of ~100 micron.

Transverse writing of three-dimensional tubular optical waveguides in glass with slit-shaped femtosecond laser beams

We report on fabrication of tubular optical waveguides buried in ZBLAN glass based on transverse femtosecond laser direct writing. Irradiation in ZBLAN with focused femtosecond laser pulses leads to decrease of refractive index in the modified region. Tubular optical waveguides of variable mode areas are fabricated by forming the four sides of the cladding with slit-shaped femtosecond laser pulses, ensuring single mode waveguiding with a mode field dimension as small as ~ 4 μm.

Generation of elliptically polarized nitrogen-ion laser fields using two-color femtosecond laser pulses

We experimentally investigate generation of molecular nitrogen-ion lasers with two femtosecond laser pulses at different wavelengths. The first pulse serves as the pump which ionizes the nitrogen molecules and excites the molecular ions to excited electronic states. The second pulse serves as the probe which leads to stimulated emission from the excited molecular ions. We observe that changing the angle between the polarization directions of the two pulses gives rise to elliptically polarized molecular nitrogen-ion laser fields, which is interpreted as a result of strong birefringence of the gain medium near the wavelengths of the molecular nitrogen-ion laser.

Phase matched second harmonic generation in an on-chip lithium niobate microresonator fabricated by femtosecond laser

Nonlinear optical processes in whispering gallery mode (WGM) microresonators have attracted much attention. Owing to the strong confinement of light in a small volume, a WGM microresonator can dramatically boost the strength of light field, thereby promoting the nonlinear interaction between the light and the resonator material. However, realization of efficient nonlinear parametric process in microresonators is a challenging issue. The major difficulty is to simultaneously ensure the phase matching condition and a coherent multiple resonance condition for all the waves participating in the nonlinear conversion process. Here, we demonstrate highly efficient second harmonic generation (SHG) in an on-chip lithium niobate microresonator fabricated by femtosecond laser direct writing. We overcome the difficulty of double resonance for the phase matched pump and second harmonic waves by selectively exciting high order modes in the fabricated thin-disk microresonator. Our technique opens opportunities for integrated classical and quantum photonic applications.

Spatiotemporal focusing does not always improve axial intensity localization

We report on an experimental comparison on critical intensities of nonlinear self-focusing in air with conventional focusing and spatiotemporal focusing schemes. Our results show that the conventional focusing with the focal lens completely filled with the incident beam allows for the strongest axial intensity confinement against the self-focusing effect. This is because that in the high-numerical-aperture condition, the focal spot will have a compact size which results in a high focal intensity. Meanwhile, the Rayleigh length of the focused beam will be substantially shortened which efficiently postpones the onset of self-focusing.

Fabrication of an integrated high-quality-factor (high-Q) optofluidic sensor by femtosecond laser micromachining

We report on fabrication of a microtoroid resonator of a high-quality factor (i. e., Q-factor of ~3.24x10^6 measured under the critical coupling condition) integrated in a microfluidic channel using femtosecond laser three-dimensional (3D) micromachining. Coupling of light into and out of the microresonator has been realized with a fiber taper that is reliably assembled with the microtoroid. The assembly of the fiber to the microtoroid is achieved by welding the fiber taper onto the sidewall of the microtoroid using CO_2 laser irradiation. The integrated microresonator maintains a high Q-factor of 3.21x10^5 as measured in air, which should still be sufficient for many sensing applications. We test the functionality of the integrated optofluidic sensor by performing bulk refractive index sensing of purified water doped with tiny amount of salt. It is shown that a detection limit of ~1.2x10^-4 refractive index unit can be achieved. Our result showcases the capability of integration of high-Q microresonators with complex microfluidic systems using femtosecond laser 3D micromachining.

Interferometric characterization of pulse front tilt of spatiotemporally focused femtosecond laser pulses for three-dimensional micromachining application

We report on an experimental measurement of the pulse front tilt (PFT) of spatiotemporally focused femtosecond laser pulses in the focal plane in both air and bulk transparent materials, which is achieved by examination of the interference pattern between the spatiotemporally focused pulse and a conventional focused reference pulse as a function of time delay between the two pulses. Our simulation results agree well with the experimental observations.

On-chip tuning of the resonant wavelength in a high-Q microresonator integrated with a microheater

We report on fabrication of a microtoroid resonator of high-quality (high-Q) factor integrated with an on-chip microheater. Both the microresonator and microheater are fabricated using femtosecond laser three-dimensional (3D) micromachining. The microheater, which is located about 200 micron away from the microresonator, has a footprint size of 200 micron by 400 micron. Tuning of the resonant wavelength in the microresonator has been achieved by varying the voltage applied on the microheater. The drifting of the resonant wavelength shows a linear dependence on the square of the voltage applied on the microheater. We found that the response time of the microresonator is less than 10 secs which is significantly shorter than the time required for reaching a thermal equilibrium on conventional heating instruments such as an external electric heater.

Plasma waves excited at interface by femtosecond laser irradiation enabling formation of volume nanograting in glass

Irradiation of intense ultrafast laser pulses in glasses can lead to formation of nanogratings whose periods are significantly smaller than the incident irradiation wavelength. The mechanism of the exotic phenomenon is still under debate. Here, we access the snapshots of morphologies in the laser affected regions in a porous glass which reveal the evolution of the formation of nanogratings with increasing number of laser pulses. Combined with further theoretical analyses, our observation provides important clues which suggest that excitation of standing plasma waves at the interfaces between areas modified and unmodified by the femtosecond laser irradiation plays a crucial role for promoting the growth of periodic nanogratings. The finding indicates that the formation of volume nanogratings induced by irradiation of femtosecond laser pulses is initiated with a mechanism similar to the formation of surface nanoripples.

Second harmonic generation in a high-Q lithium niobate microresonator fabricated by femtosecond laser micromachining

We report on fabrication of high Q lithium niobate (LN) whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microresonators suspended on silica pedestals by femtosecond laser microfabrication. The micrometer-scale (diameter ~82 μm) LN resonator possesses a Q factor of 2.5x10^5 around 1550 nm wavelength range. Moreover, second harmonic generation with a continuous-wave tunable single-longitudinal-mode pump laser in the on-chip LN microresonator is demonstrated in the on-chip LN microresonator. A fiber taper is employed to couple the pump laser into the microresonator, showing a normalized conversion efficiency of 1.35x10^-5/mW.

We show that a hollow nano-void with a lateral size of ~40 nm and an axial size of ~1500 nm can be achieved by manipulating the peak intensity and polarization of the writing laser beam. Our finding enables direct construction of 3D nanofluidics inside glass.

On-chip three-dimensional high-Q microcavities fabricated by femtosecond laser direct writing

We report on the fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) high-Q whispering gallery microcavities on a fused silica chip by femtosecond laser microfabriction, enabled by the 3D nature of femtosecond laser direct writing. The processing mainly consists of formation of freestanding microdisks by femtosecond laser direct writing and subsequent wet chemical etching. CO2 laser annealing is followed to smooth the microcavity surface. Microcavities with arbitrary tilting angle, lateral and vertical positioning are demonstrated, and the quality (Q)-factor of a typical microcavity is measured to be up to 1.07x10^6, which is currently limited by the low spatial resolution of motion stage used during the laser patterning and can be improved with motion stages of higher resolutions.
