Comprehensive study of the light charged Higgs boson in the type-I two-Higgs-doublet model

In the type-I two-Higgs-doublet model, existing theoretical and experimental constraints still permit the light charged Higgs boson with a mass below the top quark mass. We present a complete roadmap for the light charged Higgs boson at the LHC through the comprehensive phenomenology study, focusing on the normal scenario where the lighter \textit{CP}-even Higgs boson is the observed Higgs boson. In type-I, it is challenging to simultaneously accommodate the light mass of the charged Higgs boson and the constraints from theory, electroweak precision data, Higgs data, $b\to s γ$, and direct search bounds. Consequently, the parameter space is extremely curtailed, which predicts somewhat definite phenomenological signatures. We find that the mass of the pseudoscalar Higgs boson, $M_A$, is the most crucial factor in the phenomenology of the charged Higgs boson. If $M_A$ is light, the charged Higgs boson decays mainly into $A W^\pm$. When $M_A$ is above the $A W^\pm$ threshold, the dominant decay mode is into $ τ^\pm ν$. Over the whole viable parameter space, we study all the possible production and decay modes of charged Higgs bosons at the LHC, and suggest three efficient channels: (i) $pp \to H^+ H^-\to [τν] [τν]$; (ii) $pp \to HA/HH/AA \to H^\pm W^\mp H^\pm W^\mp \to [τν] [τν] W W$; (iii) $pp \to H^+ H^-\to [b \bar b W ] [b \bar b W ] $. Based on the sophisticated signal-background analyses including detector simulation, we showed that the significance of the first final state is large, that of the second one is marginal around three, but the third one suffers from huge $t\bar t$ related backgrounds.

Constraining the Active-to-Heavy-Neutrino transitional magnetic moments associated with the $Z'$ interactions at FASER$ν$

We investigate the effects of the transitional magnetic dipole moment of the active-to-heavy-neutrino associated with a new neutral gauge boson $Z'$ on neutrino-nucleon scattering at the ForwArd Search ExpeRiment-$ν$ (FASER$ν$). We consider the neutral-current neutrino-nucleon scattering ($νA\rightarrow N A$) as the production mechanism of the heavy neutrino $N$ at FASER$ν$ and estimate the sensitivity reach on the magnetic moment coupling $μ_{ν_α}$ for a range of heavy neutrino mass ($1\,{\rm GeV} < M_{N} < 70 {\rm GeV}$). In this study, we consider three benchmark models, in which the heavy neutrino is coupled to $L_e$, $L_μ$ or $L_τ$ doublet, respectively.

Exploring the Universality of Hadronic Jet Classification

The modeling of jet substructure significantly differs between Parton Shower Monte Carlo (PSMC) programs. Despite this, we observe that machine learning classifiers trained on different PSMCs learn nearly the same function. This means that when these classifiers are applied to the same PSMC for testing, they result in nearly the same performance. This classifier universality indicates that a machine learning model trained on one simulation and tested on another simulation (or data) will likely be optimal. Our observations are based on detailed studies of shallow and deep neural networks applied to simulated Lorentz boosted Higgs jet tagging at the LHC.

Inverting cosmic ray propagation by Convolutional Neural Networks

We propose a machine learning method to investigate the propagation of cosmic rays based on the precisely measured spectra of the primary and secondary cosmic ray nuclei of Li, Be, B, C, and O from AMS-02, ACE, and Voyager-1. We train two convolutional neural networks. One network learns how to infer propagation and source parameters from the energy spectra of cosmic rays, and the other network, which is similar to the former, has the flexibility to learn from the data with added artificial fluctuations. Together with the simulated data generated by GALPROP, we find that both networks can properly invert the propagation process and infer the propagation and source parameters reasonably well. This approach can be much more efficient than the traditional Markov chain Monte Carlo fitting method for deriving the propagation parameters if users choose to update confidence intervals with new experimental data. Both of the trained networks are available at (https://github.com/alan200276/CR_ML).

Sensitivity on Two-Higgs-Doublet Models from Higgs-Pair Production via $b\bar{b}b\bar{b}$ Final State

Higgs boson pair production is well known to probe the structure of the electroweak symmetry breaking sector. We illustrate using the gluon-fusion process $pp \to H \to h h \to (b\bar b) (b\bar b)$ in the framework of two-Higgs-doublet models and how the machine learning approach (three-stream convolutional neural network) can substantially improve the signal-background discrimination and thus improves the sensitivity coverage of the relevant parameter space. We show that such $gg \to hh \to b \bar b b\bar b$ process can further probe the currently allowed parameter space by HiggsSignals and HiggsBounds at the HL-LHC. The results for Types I to IV are shown.

Status of the two-Higgs-doublet model in light of the CDF $m_W$ measurement

The most recent $W$-boson mass measurement by the CDF collaboration with a substantially reduced uncertainty indicates a significant deviation from the standard model prediction, as large as $7σ$ if taken literally. Then the Peskin-Takeuchi parameters of $S$ and $T$ shift to larger values, which has profound consequences in searching for physics beyond the SM. In the framework of two-Higgs-doublet models, we study the effect of the new $W$-boson mass measurement on the parameter space. Combined with other constraints including theoretical requirements, flavor-changing neutral currents in $B$ physics, the cutoff scale above 1 TeV, Higgs precision data, and direct collider search limits from the LEP, Tevatron, and LHC experiments, we find upper bounds on the masses of the heavy Higgs bosons: $M_{H, A, H^\pm} \lesssim 1.1$ TeV in type I, II, X, and Y for the normal Higgs scenario; $M_{H^\pm} \lesssim 450 $ GeV and $M_{A} \lesssim 420 $ GeV in type I and X for the inverted scenario where the heavier $CP$-even Higgs boson is the observed one. Another important finding is that type II and type Y in the inverted scenario are completely excluded. Such unprecedented findings imply that the upcoming LHC run can readily close out a large portion of the still-available parameter space.

Non-standard Neutrino and $Z'$ Interactions at the FASER$ν$ and the LHC

We study the impact of non-standard neutrino interactions in the context of a new gauge boson $Z'$ in neutral-current deep-inelastic scattering performed in ForwArd Search ExpeRiment-$ν$ (FASER$ν$) and in monojet production at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We simulate the neutral-current deep-inelastic neutrino-nucleon scattering $νN \rightarrow νN$ at FASER$ν$ in the presence of an additional $Z'$ boson, and estimate the anticipated sensitivities to the gauge coupling in a wide range of $Z'$ mass. At the LHC, we study the effect of $Z'$ on monojet production, which can be enhanced in regions with large missing transverse momenta. We then use the recent results from ATLAS with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb$^{-1}$ to improve the limits on the gauge coupling of $Z'$. We interpret such limits on $Z'$ gauge couplings as bounds on effective non-standard neutrino interactions. We show that the FASER$\rm ν$ and the LHC results cover the medium and high energy scales, respectively, and complement one another.

Unveiling Hidden Physics at the LHC

The field of particle physics is at the crossroads. The discovery of a Higgs-like boson completed the Standard Model (SM), but the lacking observation of convincing resonances Beyond the SM (BSM) offers no guidance for the future of particle physics. On the other hand, the motivation for New Physics has not diminished and is, in fact, reinforced by several striking anomalous results in many experiments. Here we summarise the status of the most significant anomalies, including the most recent results for the flavour anomalies, the multi-lepton anomalies at the LHC, the Higgs-like excess at around 96 GeV, and anomalies in neutrino physics, astrophysics, cosmology, and cosmic rays. While the LHC promises up to 4/ab of integrated luminosity and far-reaching physics programmes to unveil BSM physics, we consider the possibility that the latter could be tested with present data, but that systemic shortcomings of the experiments and their search strategies may preclude their discovery for several reasons, including: final states consisting in soft particles only, associated production processes, QCD-like final states, close-by SM resonances, and SUSY scenarios where no missing energy is produced. New search strategies could help to unveil the hidden BSM signatures, devised by making use of the CERN open data as a new testing ground. We discuss the CERN open data with its policies, challenges, and potential usefulness for the community. We showcase the example of the CMS collaboration, which is the only collaboration regularly releasing some of its data. We find it important to stress that individuals using public data for their own research does not imply competition with experimental efforts, but rather provides unique opportunities to give guidance for further BSM searches by the collaborations. Wide access to open data is paramount to fully exploit the LHCs potential.

Disentangling new physics effects on non-resonant Higgs boson pair production from gluon fusion

There are two kinds of new physics effects on non-resonant di-Higgs process from gluon fusion, non-SM Higgs trilinear self-coupling $λ_{hhh}$ or new colored particles running in the loop. With the aim of disentangling different new physics contributions, we study their characteristics in the kinematic distributions. Assuming that the total cross section is observed to be about three times as large as the SM expectation, we consider the cases of $λ_{hhh}/λ_{hhh}^{\rm SM} =-0.5, 5.5$ as well as a new physics model with heavy vectorlike quarks in a type-II two Higgs double model, called the VLQ-2HDM. A reasonable benchmark point is suggested in the exact wrong-sign limit, where the opposite sign between the up-type VLQ and down-type VLQ couplings to the Higgs boson causes the cancellation of their contributions to the single-Higgs production from gluon fusion. Because of the threshold effects from the heavy VLQs in the loop, the VLQ-2HDM accommodates the bumps in the distributions of the invariant mass of the Higgs boson pair ($M_{hh}$) and the transverse momentum of a Higgs boson ($p_T^h$). The positions of two bumps are closely related as $ M_{hh} \simeq 2 M_{\rm VLQ}$ and $p_T^h \simeq M_{\rm VLQ}$. In addition, the bumps located at the heavy VLQ mass naturally lift up the $M_{hh}$ and $p_T^h$ distributions into high-mass and high-$p_T^h$ regions. On the other hand, the non-SM Higgs trilinear coupling cases have the distributions shift into low $ M_{hh}$ and $p_T^h$ regions. Therefore, the kinematic region with high $M_{hh}$ and high $p_T^h$ will be a smoking-gun signal for the VLQ-2HDM. Full HL-LHC simulations for the di-Higgs signals are also performed, confirming that the $b \bar{b} b \bar{b}$ final state can distinguish the VLQ-2HDM.

Probing Long-lived Particles at Higgs Factories

We study displaced vertex signatures of long-lived particles (LLPs) from exotic Higgs decays in the context of a Higgs-portal model and a neutral-naturalness model at the CEPC and FCC-ee. Such two models feature two representative mass ranges for LLPs, which show very different behavior in their decay signatures. The Higgs-portal model contains a very light sub-GeV scalar boson stemming from a singlet scalar field appended to the Standard Model. Such a light scalar LLP decays into a pair of muons or pions, giving rise to a distinctive signature of collimated muon-jet or pion-jet, thanks to the sub-GeV mass. On the other hand, the neutral-naturalness model, e.g., folded supersymmetry, predicts the lightest mirror glueball of mass $O(10)$ GeV, giving rise to long decays with a large transverse impact parameter because of the relatively large mass. Utilizing such distinct characteristics to remove the background, we estimate the sensitivities of searches for light scalar bosons and mirror glueballs at the CEPC and FCC-ee. We find either complementary or stronger coverage compared to the previous results in the similar contexts.

Vector-like Quark Interpretation for the CKM Unitarity Violation, Excess in Higgs Signal Strength, and Bottom Quark Forward-Backward Asymmetry

Due to a recent more precise evaluation of $V_{ud}$ and $V_{us}$, the unitarity condition of the first row in the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix: $|V_{ud}|^2 + |V_{us}|^2 + |V_{ub}|^2 = 0.99798 \pm 0.00038$ now stands at a deviation more than $4σ$ from unity. Furthermore, a mild excess in the overall Higgs signal strength appears at about $2σ$ above the standard model (SM) prediction, as well as the long-lasting discrepancy in the forward-backward asymmetry ${\cal A}_{\rm FB}^b$ in $Z\to b\bar b$ at LEP. Motivated from the above three anomalies we investigate an extension of the SM with vector-like quarks (VLQs) associated with the down-quark sector, with the goal of alleviating the tension among these datasets. We perform global fits of the model under the constraints coming from the unitarity condition of the first row of the CKM matrix, the $Z$-pole observables ${\cal A}_{\rm FB}^b$, $R_b$ and $Γ_{\rm had}$, Electro-Weak precision observables $ΔS$ and $ΔT$, $B$-meson observables $B_d^0$-$\overline{B}_d^0$ mixing, $B^+ \to π^+ \ell^+ \ell^-$ and $B^0 \to μ^+ μ^-$, and direct searches for VLQs at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Our results suggest that adding VLQs to the SM provides better agreement than the SM.

Probing Trilinear Higgs Self-coupling at the HL-LHC via Multivariate Analysis

We perform a multivariate analysis of Higgs-pair production in $HH \to b\bar b γγ$ channel at the HL-LHC to probe the trilinear Higgs self--coupling $λ_{3H}$, which takes the value of 1 in the SM. We consider all the known background processes. Also, for the signal we are the first to adopt the most recent event generator of POWHEG-BOX-V2 to exploit the NLO distributions for Toolkit for Multivariate Data Analysis (TMVA), taking account of the full top--quark mass dependence. Through Boosted Decision Tree (BDT) analysis trained for $λ_{3H}=1$, we find that the significance can reach up to 1.95 with about $9$ signal and $18$ background events. In addition, the Higgs boson self-coupling can be constrained to $1.00 < λ_{3H} < 6.22$ at 95\% confidence level (CL). We also perform a likelihood fitting of $M_{γγbb}$ distribution and find the $1σ$ confidence interval (CI) of $0.1 < λ_{3H} < 2.2\, \cup\,5.4 < λ_{3H} < 6.6$ for the $λ_{3H}=1$ nominal set. On the other hand, using BDTs trained for each value of $λ_{3H}$, we find a bulk region of $0.5 <\sim λ_{3H} <\sim~ 4.5$, for which it is hard to pin down the trilinear coupling.

A testable radiative neutrino mass model without additional symmetries and Explanation for the $b \to s \ell^+ \ell^-$ anomaly

We propose a one-loop radiative Majorana-type neutrino-mass matrix without any kind of additional symmetries by introducing two leptoquark-like bosons only. In this scenario, we show that the anomaly appearing in the process $b\to s\ell\bar\ell$ can be explained without any conflicts against various constraints such as lepton-flavor violations, flavor-changing neutral currents, oblique parameters $ΔS,\ ΔT$, and the Drell-Yan process. We make the predictions for the flavor-violating lepton-pair production ($eμ$, $eτ$, and $μτ$) at the LHC, as well as the cross sections for pair production of these leptoquark-like bosons.

Dark Matter with multi-annihilation channels and AMS-02 positron excess and antiproton

AMS-02 provided the unprecedented statistics in the measurement of the positron fraction from cosmic rays. That may offer a unique opportunity to distinguish the positron spectrum coming from various dark matter (DM) annihilation channels, if DM is the source of this positron excess. Therefore, we consider the scenario that the DM can annihilate into leptonic, quark, and massive gauge boson channels simultaneously with floating branching ratios to test this hypothesis. We also study the impacts from MAX, MED, MIN, and DC diffusion models as well as from isothermal, NFW, and Einasto DM density profiles on our results. We found two parameter regions that can satisfy both AMS-02 $\frac{e^+}{e^++e^-}$ and $\bar{p}/p$ datasets at 95\% CL. i) Under the NFW-MIN combination with $M_χ\subset[10,30]$ TeV. ii) Under the Einasto-DC combination with $M_χ\subset[500,1500]$ GeV.

Double Higgcision: 125 GeV Higgs boson and a potential diphoton Resonance

Searches for diphoton resonance have been shown to be very useful in discovering new heavy spin-0 or spin-2 particles. Supposing that a new heavy particle shows up in the diphoton channel and it points to a spin-0 boson, it can be allowed to have a small mixing with the observed 125 GeV Higgs-like boson. We borrow the example of the 750 GeV particles hinted with 3.2 fb$^{-1}$ data at the end of 2015 (though it did not appear in the 2016 data) to perform an analysis of "double Higgcision". In this work, we perform a complete Higgs-signal strength analysis in the Higgs-portal type framework, using all the existing 125 GeV Higgs boson data as well as the diphoton signal strength of the 750 GeV scalar boson. The best fit prefers a very tiny mixing between two scalar bosons, which has to be accommodated in models for the 750 GeV scalar boson.

Enhanced Charged Higgs Production through W-Higgs Fusion in W-b Scattering

We study the associated production of a charged Higgs boson with a bottom quark and a light quark at the LHC via p p \to H^\pm\,b\,j in the Two Higgs Doublet Models (2HDMs). Using the effective W approximation, we show that there is exact cancellation among various Feynman diagrams in high energy limit. This may imply that the production of charged Higgs can be significantly enhanced in the presence of large mass differences among the neutral Higgs bosons via W^\pm-Higgs fusion in the p p \to H^\pm\,b\,j process. Particularly, we emphasize the potential enhancement due to a light pseudoscalar boson $A$, which is still allowed by the current data by which we explicitly calculate the allowed regions in (M_A,\,\tanβ) plane, and show that the production cross section can be as large as 0.1 pb for large $\tanβ$. We also show that the transverse momentum distribution of the b quark can potentially distinguish the W^\pm-A fusion diagram from the top diagram. Finally, we point out further enhancement when we go beyond the 2HDMs.

Higgs precision study of the 750 GeV diphoton resonance and the 125 GeV standard model Higgs boson with Higgs-singlet mixing

We interpret the potential observation of the 750 GeV di-photon resonance at the LHC in models, in which an $SU(2)$ isospin-singlet scalar boson mixes with the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson through an angle $α$. Allowing the singlet scalar boson to have renormalizable couplings to vector-like leptons and quarks and introducing sizable decay width of the 750 GeV di-photon resonance into non-SM particles such as dark matters, we can explain the large production cross section $σ(H_2) \times B(H_2 \to γγ)$ as well as the apparent large total width of the boson without conflicts from the results obtained by previous global fits to the SM Higgs boson data.

Interpreting the 750 GeV Di-photon Resonance using photon-jets in Hidden-Valley-like models

Motivated by the di-photon resonance recently reported by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations at $\sqrt{s} =13$ TeV, we interpret the resonance as a scalar boson $X (750)$ in hidden-valley-like models. The scalar boson $X$ can mix with the standard model Higgs boson and thus can be produced via gluon fusion. It then decays into a pair of very light hidden particles $Y$ of sub-GeV, each of which in turn decays to a pair of collimated $ π^{0} $'s, and these two $ π^{0} $'s decay into photons which then form photon-jets. A photon-jet ($ γ$-jet) is a special feature that consists of a cluster of collinear photons from the decay of a fast moving light particle (sub-GeV). Because these photons inside the photon-jet are so collimated that it cannot be distinguished from a single photon, and so in the final state of the decay of $X(750)$ a pair of photon-jets look like a pair of single photons, which the experimentalists observed and formed the 750 GeV di-photon resonance. Prospects for the LHC Run-2 about other new and testable features are also discussed.

Resurgence of $Z'$ from the single electron-muon event at ATLAS

Inspired by the recent single $e^{\pm}μ^{\mp}$ event at 2.1 TeV invariant mass from the ATLAS at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with 3.2 fb$^{-1}$ luminosity, we propose an explanation using a $Z'$ gauge boson, which possesses lepton-flavor-changing neutral currents originated from non-universal couplings to charged leptons. We assume that the left-handed charged-lepton mixing matrix equals to the PMNS matrix and no mixing in the neutrino sector to make this phenomenological $Z'$ model more predictive. There are indeed some parameter regions, where the $Z'$ can generate a large enough $e^{\pm}μ^{\mp}$ production cross section, while at the same time satisfies various observables from lepton-flavor violation and other constraints from the LHC.

An Exploratory study of Higgs-boson pair production

Higgs-boson pair production is well known being capable to probe the trilinear self-coupling of the Higgs boson, which is one of the important ingredients of the Higgs sector itself. Pair production then depends on the top-quark Yukawa coupling $g_t^{S,P}$, Higgs trilinear coupling $λ_{3H}$, and a possible dim-5 contact-type $ttHH$ coupling $g_{tt}^{S,P}$, which may appear in some higher representations of the Higgs sector. We take into account the possibility that the top-Yukawa and the $ttHH$ couplings involved can be CP violating. We calculate the cross sections and the interference terms as coefficients of the square or the 4th power of each coupling $(g_t^{S,P}, λ_{3H}, g_{tt}^{S,P})$ at various stages of cuts, such that the desired cross section under various cuts can be obtained by simply inputing the couplings. We employ the $H H \to γγb \bar b$ decay mode of the Higgs-boson pair to investigate the possibility of disentangle the triangle diagram from the box digram so as to have a clean probe of the trilinear coupling at the LHC. We found that the angular separation between the $b$ and $\bar b$ and that between the two photons is useful. We obtain the sensitivity reach of each pair of couplings at the 14 TeV LHC and the future 100 TeV pp machine. Finally, we also comment on using the $b\bar b τ^+ τ^-$ decay mode in Appendix.

Bounds on Higgs-Portal models from the LHC Higgs data

In a number of Higgs-portal models, an $SU(2)$ isospin-singlet scalar boson generically appears at the electroweak scale and can mix with the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson with a mixing angle $α$. This singlet scalar boson can have renormalizable couplings to a pair of dark matter particles, vectorlike leptons or quarks, or new gauge bosons, thereby modifying the Higgs signal strengths in a nontrivial way. In this work, we perform global fits to such models using the most updated LHC Higgs-boson data and discuss the corresponding implications on Higgs-portal-type models. In particular we find that the current LHC Higgs-boson data slightly favors the SM over the Higgs-portal singlet-scalar models, which has to be further examined using the upcoming LHC Higgs-boson data. Finally the Higgs-portal models are constrained as follows: $\cosα\gtrsim 0.86$ and $ΔΓ_{\rm tot} \lesssim 1.9$ MeV at 95 \% CL.

Dark Matter in Split SUSY with Intermediate Higgses

The searches for heavy Higgs bosons and supersymmetric (SUSY) particles at the LHC have left the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) with an unusual spectrum of SUSY particles, namely, all squarks are beyond a few TeV while the Higgs bosons other than the one observed at 125 GeV could be relatively light. In light of this, we study a scenario characterized by two scales: the SUSY breaking scale or the squark-mass scale $(M_S)$ and the heavy Higgs-boson mass scale $(M_A)$.We perform a survey of the MSSM parameter space with $M_S < 10^{10}$ GeV and $M_A < 10^4$ GeV such that the lightest Higgs boson mass is within the range of the observed Higgs boson as well as satisfying a number of constraints. The set of constraints include the invisible decay width of the $Z$ boson and that of the Higgs boson, the chargino-mass limit, dark matter relic abundance from Planck, the spin-independent cross section of direct detection by LUX, and gamma-ray flux from dwarf spheroidal galaxies and gamma-ray line constraints measured by Fermi LAT. Survived regions of parameter space feature the dark matter with correct relic abundance, which is achieved through either coannihilation with charginos, $A/H$ funnels, or both. We show that future measurements, e.g., XENON1T and LZ, of spin-independent cross sections can further squeeze the parameter space.

Higgs data constraints on the minimal supersymmetric standard model

We perform global fits to the most recent data (after summer 2014) on Higgs boson signal strengths in the framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM). We further impose the existing limits on the masses of charginos, staus, stops and sbottoms together with the current Higgs mass constraint $|M_{H_1} - 125.5\,{\rm GeV}| < 6$ GeV. The heavy supersymmetric (SUSY) particles such as squarks enter into the loop factors of the $Hgg$ and $Hγγ$ vertices while other SUSY particles such as sleptons and charginos also enter into that of the $Hγγ$ vertex. We also take into account the possibility of other light particles such as other Higgs bosons and neutralinos, such that the 125.5 GeV Higgs boson can decay into. We use the data from the ATLAS, CMS, and the Tevatron, with existing limits on SUSY particles, to constrain on the relevant SUSY parameters. We obtain allowed regions in the SUSY parameter space of squark, slepton and chargino masses, and the $μ$ parameter. We find that $|ΔS^γ/S^γ_{\rm SM}|\lsim 0.1$ at $68\%$ confidence level when $M_{\tildeχ^{\pm}_1}>300$ GeV and $M_{\tildeτ_1}>300$ GeV, irrespective of the squarks masses. Furthermore, $|ΔS^γ/S^γ_{\rm SM}|\lsim 0.03 $ when $M_{\tildeχ^\pm_1,{\tildeτ_1}} > 500$ GeV and $M_{{\tilde t}_1,{\tilde b}_1} \gsim 600$ GeV.

Interpretations of the ATLAS Diboson Anomaly

Recently, the ATLAS Collaboration recorded an interesting anomaly in diboson production with excesses at the diboson invariant mass around 2 TeV in boosted jets of all the $WZ$, $W^+ W^-$, and $ZZ$ channels. We offer a theoretical interpretation of the anomaly using a phenomenological right-handed model with extra $W'$ and $Z'$ bosons. Leptoquark induced rare decay amplitudes $h \to τ^\mp μ^\pm$ and $τ\to μγ$

Rare decay modes of the newly discovered standard-model-like Higgs boson $h$ may test the flavor changing couplings in the leptoquark sector through the process $h \to τ^\mpμ^\pm$. Motived by the recently reported excess in LHC data from the CMS detector, we found that a predicted branching fraction Br($h \to τ^\mpμ^\pm$) at the level of 1\% is possible even though the coupling parameters are subjected to the stringent constraint from the null observation of $τ\toμγ$, where the destructive cancellation among amplitudes is achievable by fine tuning.

Non-abelian Dark Matter Solutions for Galactic Gamma-ray Excess and Perseus 3.5 keV X-ray Line

We attempt to explain simultaneously the Galactic center gamma-ray excess and the 3.5 keV X-ray line from the Perseus cluster based on a class of non-abelian $SU(2)$ DM models, in which the dark matter and an excited state comprise a "dark" $SU(2)$ doublet. The non-abelian group kinetically mixes with the standard model gauge group via dimensions-5 operators. The dark matter particles annihilate into standard model fermions, followed by fragmentation and bremsstrahlung, and thus producing a continuous spectrum of gamma-rays. On the other hand, the dark matter particles can annihilate into a pair of excited states, each of which decays back into the dark matter particle and an X-ray photon, which has an energy equal to the mass difference between the dark matter and the excited state, which is set to be 3.5 keV. The large hierarchy between the required X-ray and $γ$-ray annihilation cross-sections can be achieved by a very small kinetic mixing between the SM and dark sector, which effectively suppresses the annihilation into the standard model fermions but not into the excited state.

Confronting Higgcision with Electric Dipole Moments

Current data on the signal strengths and angular spectrum of the 125.5 GeV Higgs boson still allow a CP-mixed state, namely, the pseudoscalar coupling to the top quark can be as sizable as the scalar coupling: $C_u^S \approx C_u^P =1/2$. CP violation can then arise and manifest in sizable electric dipole moments (EDMs). In the framework of two-Higgs-doublet models, we not only update the Higgs precision (Higgcision) study on the couplings with the most updated Higgs signal strength data, but also compute all the Higgs-mediated contributions from the 125.5 GeV Higgs boson to the EDMs, and confront the allowed parameter space against the existing constraints from the EDM measurements of Thallium, neutron, Mercury, and Thorium monoxide. We found that the combined EDM constraints restrict the pseudoscalar coupling to be less than about $10^{-2}$, unless there are contributions from other Higgs bosons, supersymmetric particles, or other exotic particles that delicately cancel the current Higgs-mediated contributions.

Higgcision Updates 2014

During the 2014 Summer Conferences, both ATLAS and CMS Collaborations of the LHC experiments have demonstrated tremendous efforts in treatment of data and processing more data such that most data on signal strengths have improved; especially the diphoton and fermionic modes of both experiments. Here in this note we perform an update to our previous model-independent Higgs precision analysis -- Higgcision. We found the followings: (i) the uncertainties on most couplings shrink about 10--20%, (ii) the nonstandard (e.g. invisible) decay branching ratio of the Higgs boson is constrained to be less than 19% if only the width is allowed to vary, (iii) the gauge-Higgs coupling C_v is constrained to be 0.94 +0.11 -0.12, in which the uncertainty is reduced by about 10%, and (iv) the standard model (SM) Higgs boson still provides the best fit to all the Higgs boson data, and compared to the previous results the SM Higgs boson now enjoys a higher p value than the last year.

Probing the Top-Yukawa Coupling in Associated Higgs production with a Single Top Quark

Associated production of the Higgs boson with a single top quark proceeds through Feynman diagrams, which are either proportional to the hWW, top-Yukawa, or the bottom-Yukawa couplings. It was shown in literature that the interference between the top-Yukawa and the gauge-Higgs diagrams can be significant, and thus the measurement of the cross sections can help pin down the sign and the size of the top-Yukawa coupling. Here we perform a detailed study with full detector simulations of such a possibility at the LHC-14 within the current allowed range of hWW and top-Yukawa couplings, using h-> b b-bar, γγ, τ+ τ-, ZZ* -> 4 l modes. We found that the LHC-14 has the potential to distinguish the size and the sign of the top-Yukawa coupling. Among the channels the h-> b b-bar mode mode provides the best chance to probe the signal, followed by the h -> γγ mode, which has the advantage of a narrow reconstructed mass peak. We also pointed out that the spatial separation among the final-state particles has the potential in differentiating among various values of the top-Yukawa coupling.

Collider Constraints on the Dark Matter Interpretation of the CDMS II Results

The recent observation of three events by the CDMS II experiment can be interpreted as a 8.6 GeV dark matter scatters elastically with the nucleons inside the silicon detectors with a spin-independent cross section of 1.9 x 10^-41 cm^2. We employ the effective dark matter interaction approach to fit to the interpreted cross section, and make predictions for monojet and monophoton production at the LHC with the fitted parameters. We show that some of the operators are already ruled out by current data while the others can be further probed in the upcoming 14 TeV run of the LHC.

Collider Signatures of Goldstone Bosons

Recently Weinberg suggested that Goldstone bosons arising from the spontaneous breakdown of some global hidden symmetries can interact weakly in the early Universe and account for a fraction of the effective number of neutrino species N_eff, which has been reported persistently 1 σaway from its expected value of three. In this work, we study in some details a number of experimental constraints on this interesting idea based on the simplest possibility of a global U(1), as studied by Weinberg. We work out the decay branching ratios of the associated light scalar field $σ$ and suggest a possible collider signature at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In some corners of the parameter space, the scalar field σcan decay into a pair of pions with a branching ratio of order O(1)% while the rest is mostly a pair of Goldstone bosons. The collider signature would be gluon fusion into the standard model Higgs boson gg -> H or associated production with a W gauge boson q q'-bar -> H W, followed by H -> σσ-> (ππ) (αα), where αis the Goldstone boson.

Diphoton Rate of the Standard-Model-Like Higgs Boson in the Extra U(1) Extended MSSM

Motivated by the excess in the diphoton production rate of the Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), we investigate the possibility that one of the CP-even Higgs bosons of the extra U(1) extended minimal supersymmetric standard model can give a consistent result. We scan the parameter space for a standard-model-like Higgs boson such that the mass is in the range of 124-127 GeV and the production rate σxB of the WW*, ZZ* modes are consistent with the standard model (SM) values while that of γγis enhanced relative to the SM value. We find that the SM-like Higgs boson is mostly the lightest CP-even Higgs boson and it has a strong mixing with the second lightest one, which is largely singlet-like. The implications on Zγproduction rate and properties of the other Higgs bosons are also studied.

Higgcision in the Two-Higgs Doublet Models

We perform global fits to general two-Higgs doublet models (2HDMs) with generalized couplings using the most updated data from ATLAS, CMS, and Tevatron. We include both scenarios with CP-conserving and CP-violating couplings. By relaxing the requirement on the discrete symmetries that are often imposed on the Yukawa couplings, we try to see which of the 2HDMs is preferred. We found that (i) Higgcision in 2HDMs can be performed efficiently by using only 4 parameters including the charged Higgs contributions to the Higgs couplings to two photons, (ii) the differences among various types of 2HDMs are very small with respect to the chi-square fits, (iii) $\tanβ$ is constrained to be small, (iv) the $p$-values for various fits in 2HDMs are worse than that of the standard model. Finally, we put emphasis on our findings that future precision measurements of the Higgs coupling to the scalar top-quark bilinear ($C_u^S$) and $\tanβ$ may endow us with the discriminating power among various types of 2HDMs especially when $C_u^S$ deviates from its SM value 1.

Higgs Precision (Higgcision) Era begins

After the discovery of the Higgs boson at the LHC, it is natural to start the research program on the precision study of the Higgs-boson couplings to various standard model (SM) particles. We provide a generic framework for the deviations of the couplings from their SM values by introducing a number of parameters. We show that a large number of models beyond the SM can be covered, including two-Higgs-doublet models, supersymmetric models, little-Higgs models, extended Higgs sectors with singlets, and fourth generation models. We perform global fits to the most updated data from CMS, ATLAS, and Tevatron under various initial conditions of the parameter set. In particular, we have made explicit comparisons between the fitting results BEFORE and AFTER the Moriond 2013 meetings. Highlights of the results include: (i) the nonstandard decay branching ratio of the Higgs boson is less than 22%; (ii) the most efficient way to achieve the best fit for the data before the Moriond update is to introduce additional particle contributions to the triangular-loop functions of Hγγand Hgg vertices; (iii) the 1σallowed range of the relative coupling of HVV is 1.01 +0.13 -0.14, which means that the electroweak-symmetry breaking contribution from the observed Higgs boson leaves only a small room for other Higgs bosons; (iv) the current data do not rule out pseudoscalar couplings nor pseudoscalar contributions to the Hγγand Hgg vertices; and (v) the SM Higgs boson provides the best fit to all the current Higgs data.

Implications on the Heavy CP-even Higgs Boson from Current Higgs Data

The current Large Hadron Collider data indicates that the newly observed resonance has the WW and ZZ modes consistent with the standard model Higgs boson, while the γγmode is about 1.2 - 2 times that of the standard model prediction and the tau-pair mode is suppressed. If this pattern persists in the upcoming data, it would be a sign for physics beyond the standard model. In the type II two-Higgs-doublet model, it is the region where \sinα\approx 0 and a moderately large \tanβ= 10 - 20 that the lighter CP-even Higgs boson can accommodate the current data. We note that in this region the heavier CP-even Higgs boson must have a large decay branching ratio into tau pairs. We find that this heavier Higgs boson can be observable in the associated production with a b\bar b pair and through the decay into a tau pair.

Large non-Gaussianity generated after D-term Inflation by Right-Handed Sneutrino Curvaton

In this paper, we consider large non-Gaussianity generated after D-term inflation in the case that the adiabatic curvature perturbation produced is dominated by a right-handed (RH) sneutrino curvaton. The cosmic string problem can also be evaded with around 10% contribution to the CMB power spectrum and the spectral index $n_s \simeq 1$. The non-Gaussianity produced can be as large as $10<f_{NL}<100$ for the right-handed sneutrino mass being around $m_Φ=10 {GeV}$ with the Yukawa coupling $λ_ν\sim 10^{-10}$. In this case, the lightest neutrino mass is $10^{-10}{eV}$ which favors RH sneutrino leptogenesis.

Using the Higgs boson to probe the littlest Higgs model with T-parity through $Z_H W_H$ production at the LHC

In the littlest Higgs model with T-parity, the production cross section of the T-odd heavy gauge boson pair $Z_H W_H$ is quite sizable at the LHC. In addition, both the $W_H$ and $Z_H$ bosons have almost exclusively one decay channel into $W A_H$ and $H A_H$ respectively, where the dark matter candidate $A_H$ yields a large missing energy signal. Upon the discovery of the Higgs boson at 125 GeV, we study the discovery sensitivity of the final state $ pp \to b\bar{b} l+\rlap{\,/}{E}_T$ to probe the model at the LHC. We find that the standard model backgrounds are manageable by applying suitable kinematic cuts. The LHC running at $\sqrt{s}=14$ TeV with a 100/fb total luminosity is sensitive to the model if the symmetry breaking scale $f$ is below about 850 GeV.

WW Scattering in the Era of Post Higgs Discovery

More evidences have now been collected at the Large Hadron Collider suggesting the new 125 - 126 GeV boson is likely the long sought Higgs boson in the standard model. One pressing question continued being asked by theorists is whether this Higgs boson is a lone player responsible for the full electroweak symmetry breaking. Current data still allow room for additional Higgs bosons or some other UV physics that may play a partial role in electroweak symmetry breaking as well. We use the WW scattering to investigate such a possibility, using the two-Higgs-doublet model as a prototype. The WW scattering becomes strong when the extra Higgs bosons are very heavy. We study the sensitivity of the partially strong WW scattering signals at the 13 TeV Large Hadron Collider.

Could the excess seen at 124-126 GeV be due to the Randall-Sundrum Radion?

Current Higgs boson searches in various channels at the LHC point to an excess at around 124-126 GeV due to a possibly standard-model-like Higgs boson. If one examines more closely the channels (γγ, WW*, and ZZ*) that have excess, this "Higgs boson" may be the Randall-Sundrum radion ϕ. Because of the trace anomaly the radion has stronger couplings to the photon and gluon pairs. Thus, it will enhance the production rates into gg and γγwhile those for WW*, ZZ* and b\bar b are reduced relative to their standard-model values. We show that it can match well with the data from CMS for m_ϕ= 124 GeV and the required scale Λ_ϕ~ <ϕ> is about 0.68 TeV.

Distinguishing Various Models of the 125 GeV Boson in Vector Boson Fusion

The hint of a new particle around 125 GeV at the LHC through the decay modes of diphoton and a number of others may point to quite a number of possibilities. While at the LHC the dominant production mechanism for the Higgs boson of the standard model and some other extensions is via the gluon fusion process, the alternative vector boson fusion is more sensitive to electroweak symmetry breaking through the gauge-Higgs couplings and therefore can be used to probe for models beyond the standard model. In this work, using the well known dijet-tagging technique to single out the vector boson fusion mechanism, we investigate its capability to discriminate a number of models that have been suggested to give an enhanced inclusive diphoton production rate, including the standard model Higgs boson, fermiophobic Higgs boson, Randall-Sundrum radion, inert-Higgs-doublet model, two-Higgs-doublet model, and the MSSM. The rates in vector-boson fusion can give more information of the underlying models to help distinguishing among the models.

Global Constraints on Effective Dark Matter Interactions: Relic Density, Direct Detection, Indirect Detection, and Collider

An effective interaction approach is used to describe the interactions between the spin 0 or spin 1/2 dark matter particle and the degrees of freedom of the standard model. This approach is applicable to those models in which the dark matter particles do not experience the standard-model interactions, e.g., hidden-sector models. We explore the effects of these effective interaction operators on (i) dark matter relic density, (ii) spin-independent and spin-dependent dark matter-nucleon scattering cross sections, (iii) cosmic antiproton and gamma ray fluxes from the galactic halo due to dark matter annihilation, and (iv) monojet and monophoton production plus missing energy at the Tevatron and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We combine the experimental data of relic density from WMAP7, spin-independent cross section from XENON100, spin-dependent cross section from XENON10, ZEPLIN-III, and SIMPLE, cosmic antiproton flux from PAMELA, cosmic gamma-ray flux from ${\it Fermi}$-LAT, and the monojet and monophoton data from the Tevatron and the LHC, to put the most comprehensive limits on each effective operator.

Global Study of the Simplest Scalar Phantom Dark Matter Model

We present a global study of the simplest scalar phantom dark matter model. The best fit parameters of the model are determined by simultaneously imposing (i) relic density constraint from WMAP, (ii) 225 live days data from direct experiment XENON100, (iii) upper limit of gamma-ray flux from Fermi-LAT indirect detection based on dwarf spheroidal satellite galaxies, and (iv) the Higgs boson candidate with a mass about 125 GeV and its invisible branching ratio no larger than 40% if the decay of the Higgs boson into a pair of dark matter is kinematically allowed. The allowed parameter space is then used to predict annihilation cross sections for gamma-ray lines, event rates for three processes mono-b jet, single charged lepton and two charged leptons plus missing energies at the Large Hadron Collider, as well as to evaluate the muon anomalous magnetic dipole moment for the model.

Mimicking the Standard Model Higgs Boson in UMSSM

Motivated by the recent results in the standard model (SM) Higgs boson search at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) we investigate the SM-like CP-even Higgs boson of the U(1)'-extended minimal supersymmetric standard model (UMSSM) and its branching ratio into the b b-bar, W W*, and χ^0_1 χ^0_1 modes. In the Summer 2011, a 2 sigma excess was reported in the channel H -> W W* -> l+ nu l- nu-bar around 130 - 140 GeV range. Later on in December 2011 announcements were made that an excess was seen in the 124-126 GeV range, while the SM Higgs boson above 131 GeV up to about 600 GeV is ruled out. We examine two scenarios of these mass ranges: (i) 130 GeV < M_{h_{SM-like}} < 141 GeV and show that the Higgs boson can decay into invisible neutralinos to evade the SM bound; and (ii) 120 GeV < M_{h_{\rm SM-like}} < 130 GeV and show that the Higgs boson can avoid decaying into neutralinos and thus gives enhanced rates into visible particles. We use the ηmodel of E_6 with TeV scale supersymmetry to illustrate the idea by scanning the parameter space to realize these two different scenarios.

Singlino-driven Electroweak Baryogenesis in the Next-to-MSSM

We explore a new possibility of electroweak baryogenesis in the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model. In this model, a strong first-order electroweak phase transition can be achieved due to the additional singlet Higgs field. The new impact of its superpartner (singlino) on the baryon asymmetry is investigated by employing the closed-time-path formalism. We find that the CP violating source term fueled by the singlino could be large enough to generate the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe without any conflicts with the current constraints from the non-observation of the Thallium, neutron and Mercury electric dipole moments.

Baryonic Z' Explanation for the CDF Wjj Excess

The latest CDF anomaly, the excess of dijet events in the invariant-mass window 120-160 GeV in associated production with a $W$ boson, can be explained by a baryonic $Z'$ model in which the $Z'$ boson has negligible couplings to leptons. Although this $Z'$ model is hardly subject to the Drell-Yan constraint from Tevatron, it is constrained by the dijet data from UA2 ($\sqrt{s} = 630$ GeV), and the precision measurements at LEP through the mixing with the SM $Z$ boson. We show that under these constraints this model can still explain the excess in the M_{jj} \sim 120 - 160 GeV window, as well as the claimed cross section $σ(W Z') \sim 4$ pb. Implications at the Tevatron would be the associated production of $γZ',\; Z Z'$, and $Z'Z'$ with the $Z' \to jj$. We show that with tightened jet cuts and improved systematic uncertainties both $γZ' \to γjj$ and $Z Z' \to \ell^+ \ell^- j j$ channels could be useful to probe this model at the Tevatron.

Gamma-ray Constraints on Effective Interactions of the Dark Matter

Using an effective interaction approach to describe the interactions between the dark matter particle and the light degrees of freedom of the standard model, we calculate the gamma-ray flux due to the annihilation of the dark matter into quarks, followed by fragmentation into neutral pions which subsequently decay into photons. By comparison to the mid-latitude data released from the Fermi-LAT experiment, we obtain useful constraints on the size of the effective interactions and they are found to be comparable to those deduced from collider, gamma-ray line and anti-matter search experiments. However, the two operators induced by scalar and vector exchange among fermionic dark matter and light quarks that contribute to spin-independent cross sections are constrained more stringently by the recent XENON100 data.

Global Study of Electron-Quark Unparticle Interactions

We perform a global fit on parity-conserving electron-quark interactions via spin-1 unparticle exchange. Besides the peculiar features of unparticle exchange due to non-integral values for the scaling dimension d_U and a non-trivial phase factor exp (-id_U π) associated with a time-like unparticle propagator, the energy dependence s^{-2 + d_U} of the unparticle contributions in the scattering amplitudes are also taken into account. The high energy data sets taken into consideration in our analysis are from (1) deep inelastic scattering at high Q^2 from ZEUS and H1, (2) Drell-Yan production at Run II of CDF and DO, and (3) e^+e^- --> hadrons at LEPII. The hadronic data at LEPII by itself indicated a 3-4 sigma preference of new physics over the Standard Model. However, when all data sets are combined, no preference for unparticle effects can be given. We thus deduce an improved 95% confidence level limit on the unparticle energy scale Λ_\U.

Higgs Mediated EDMs in the Next-to-MSSM: An Application to Electroweak Baryogenesis

We perform a study on the predictions of electric-dipole moments (EDMs) of neutron, Mercury (Hg), Thallium (Tl), deuteron, and Radium (Ra) in the framework of next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model (NMSSM) with CP-violating parameters in the superpotential and soft-supersymmetry-breaking sector. We confine to the case in which only the physical tree-level CP phase $(ϕ'_λ- ϕ'_κ)$, associated with the couplings of the singlet terms in the superpotential and with the vacuum-expectation-values (VEVs), takes on a nonzero value. We found that the one-loop contributions from neutralinos are mostly small while the two-loop Higgs-mediated contributions of the Barr-Zee (BZ) type diagrams dominate. We emphasize a scenario motivated by electroweak baryogenesis.

Supersymmetric Decays of the Z' Boson

The decay of the Z' boson into supersymmetric particles is studied. We investigate how these supersymmetric modes affect the current limits from the Tevatron and project the expected sensitivities at the LHC. Employing three representative supersymmetric Z' models, namely, E_6, U(1)_{B-L}, and the sequential model, we show that the current limits of the Z' mass from the Tevatron could be reduced substantially due to the weakening of the branching ratio into leptonic pairs. The mass reach for the E_6 Z' bosons is about 1.3-1.5 TeV at the LHC-7 (1 fb^{-1}), about 2.5 - 2.6 TeV at the LHC-10 (10 fb^{-1}), and about 4.2 - 4.3 TeV at the LHC-14 (100 fb^{-1}). A similar mass reach for the U(1)_{B-L} Z' is also obtained. We also examine the potential of identifying various supersymmetric decay modes of the Z' boson because it may play a crucial role in the detailed dynamics of supersymmetry breaking.

The Golden Mode for a Baryonic $Z'$ Boson at Hadronic Colliders: pp/ppbar -> WZ' -> l nu b b-bar

Associated production of a baryonic Z' boson with the W boson can account for the excess in Wjj production observed by the CDF collaboration at the Tevatron. We analyze other possible channels of this Z' at the Tevatron and at the LHC, including γZ' and Z Z' with the Z' -> jj. We show that the chances of confirming this baryonic Z' is better at the Tevatron than at the LHC because of the faster growing backgrounds at the LHC. Unfortunately the current systematic uncertainties of the order of 10% cannot yield any significant excess in both γZ' and Z Z' channels at the Tevatron and also at the LHC. Nevertheless the search using the b\bar b decay mode of Z' is much more feasible at the LHC, provided that the branching ratio B(Z' -> b\bar b) > 0.1. In particular, the W Z' -> l νb\bar b mode has a signal-to-background ratio larger than 1. Even with 1 fb^{-1} luminosity at the LHC it can lead to a high significance level. The WZ' -> l νb \bar b and γZ' -> γb \bar b are also highly observable at the Tevatron.

Top Quark Forward-Backward Asymmetry in the Large Invariant Mass Region

The forward-backward asymmetry (FBA) in top-pair production that was observed in 2008 gets a boost in a recent CDF publication. Not only has the FBA further been confirmed, but also distributional preferences are shown. Strikingly, the FBA is the most sizable in the large $M_{t\bar t}$ invariant mass region and in the large rapidity difference $|Δy|$ region. Here we used our previously proposed $t$-channel exchanged $W'$ boson to explain the new observations. We show that a new particle exchanged in the $t$-channel generically gives rise to such observations. Furthermore, we show that the proposed $W'$ can be directly produced in association with a top quark at the Tevatron and the LHC. We perform a signal-background analysis and show that such a $W'$ is readily observed at the Tevatron with a 10 fb$^{-1}$ luminosity and at the LHC-7 with just a 100 pb$^{-1}$ luminosity.

Collider signatures of the Gauge-Higgs Dark Matter

A recently proposed SO(5)xU(1) gauge-Higgs unification model in the Randall-Sundrum warped space contains a very interesting dark matter candidate, the Higgs boson. As a part of the fifth component of a five-dimensional gauge field, the four-dimensional neutral Higgs boson has odd H parity while all the other standard model particles have even parity to all orders in perturbation theory. Based on H-parity conserving WWHH and ZZHH vertices, we investigate the collider signatures of Higgs dark matter production associated with a SM W or Z gauge boson at the LHC and the ILC. The final state consists of a W or a Z boson with large missing energy. We found that the level of the signal cross section is quite hopeless at the LHC while we may be able to identify it at the ILC with polarized electron beams.

Cosmic positron and antiproton constraints on the gauge-Higgs Dark Matter

We calculate the cosmic ray positron and antiproton spectra of a gauge-Higgs dark matter candidate in a warped five-dimensional $SO(5) \times U(1)$ gauge-Higgs unification model. The stability of the gauge-Higgs boson is guaranteed by the H parity under which only the Higgs boson is odd at low energy. The 4-point vertices of HHW^+W^- and HHZZ, allowed by H parity conservation, have the same magnitude as in the standard model, which yields efficient annihilation rate for $m_H > m_W$. The most dominant annihilation channel is $H H \to W^+ W^-$ followed by the subsequent decays of the $W$ bosons into positrons or quarks, which undergo fragmentation into antiproton. Comparing with the observed positron and antiproton spectra with the PAMALA and Fermi/LAT, we found that the Higgs boson mass cannot be larger than 90 GeV, in order not to overrun the observations. Together with the constraint on not overclosing the Universe, the valid range of the dark matter mass is restricted to 70-90 GeV.

Hidden Sector Dirac Dark Matter, Stueckelberg Z' Model and the CDMS and XENON Experiments

For the milli-charged Dirac dark matter in the Stueckelberg Z' model, we discuss the contributions from the vector couplings of the dark matter with the neutral gauge bosons to the spin-independent scattering cross section in the direct detections. We also compute the effective coupling between the fermionic dark matter particle and the standard model Higgs boson generated through a triangular loop of Z and/or Z' bosons which may contribute to the spin-independent scattering cross section at the quantum level. We show that the latter contribution is consistent with the most recent experimental limits from CDMS II and XENON100. In the case that the dark matter particle carries a milli-charge of order O(10^{-3}e), we found that it would lose all its kinetic energy by colliding with nucleons in the atmosphere before reaching the detector. Even though we use the Stueckelberg Z' model for illustration, the results we obtain are rather general and applicable to other Z-Z' portal-type hidden-sector models as well.

Higgs Boson Sector of the Next-to-MSSM with CP Violation

We perform a comprehensive study of the Higgs sector in the framework of the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model with CP-violating parameters in the superpotential and in the soft-supersymmetry-breaking sector. Since the CP is no longer a good symmetry, the two CP-odd and the three CP-even Higgs bosons of the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model in the CP-conserving limit will mix. We show explicitly how the mass spectrum and couplings to gauge bosons of the various Higgs bosons change when the CP-violating phases take on nonzero values. We include full one-loop and the logarithmically enhanced two-loop effects employing the renormalization-group (RG) improved approach. In addition, the LEP limits, the global minimum condition, and the positivity of the square of the Higgs-boson mass have been imposed. We demonstrate the effects on the Higgs-mass spectrum and the couplings to gauge bosons with and without the RG-improved corrections. Substantial modifications to the allowed parameter space happen because of the changes to the Higgs-boson spectrum and their couplings with the RG-improved corrections. Finally, we calculate the mass spectrum and couplings of the few selected scenarios and compare to the previous results in literature where possible; in particular, we illustrate a scenario motivated by electroweak baryogenesis.

Longitudinal Weak Gauge Bosons Scattering in Hidden Z' Models

Longitudinal weak gauge boson scattering has been well known as a powerful method to probe the underlying mechanism of the electroweak symmetry breaking sector of the Standard Model. We point out that longitudinal weak gauge boson scattering is also sensitive to the gauge sector when the non-Abelian trilinear and quartic couplings of the Standard Model Z boson are modified due to the general mixings with another Z' boson in the hidden sector and possibly with the photon as well. In particular, these mixings can lead to a partially strong scattering effect in the channels of W^\pm_L W^\pm_L \to W^\pm_L W^\pm_L and W^\pm_L W^\mp_L \to W^\pm_L W^\mp_L which can be probed at the Large Hadron Collider. We study this effect in a simple U(1) extension of the Standard Model recently suggested in the literature that includes both the symmetry breaking Higgs mechanism as well as the gauge invariant Stueckelberg mass terms for the two Abelian groups. Other types of Z' models are also briefly discussed.

Higgs boson enhancement effects on squark-pair production at the LHC

We study the Higgs boson effects on third-generation squark-pair production in proton-proton collision at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), including $\Stop \Stop^*$, $\Stop\Sbot^*$, and $\Sbot \Sbot^*$. We found that substantial enhancement can be obtained through s-channel exchanges of Higgs bosons at large $\tanβ$, at which the enhancement mainly comes from $b\bar b$, $b\bar c$, and $c\bar b$ initial states. We compute the complete set of electroweak (EW) contributions to all production channels. This completes previous computations in the literature. We found that the EW contributions can be significant and can reach up to 25% in more general scenarios and at the resonance of the heavy Higgs boson. The size of Higgs enhancement is comparable or even higher than the PDF uncertainties and so must be included in any reliable analysis. A full analytical computation of all the EW contributions is presented.

Impact on the Light Higgsino-LSP Scenario from Physics beyond the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model

The modest addition of the dimension-5 term lambda(H_u.H_d)^2/M to the superpotential of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) originated from physics beyond the MSSM (BMSSM) has a significant impact on the scenario of the Higgsino-dominated neutralino state being the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP). It increases the mass difference between the LSP and the lighter chargino as well as that between the LSP and the second-lightest neutralino. This enhances the LHC discovery potential of the chargino and neutralino decays, producing more energetic charged leptons or pions than the decays without the BMSSM corrections. Furthermore, the coannihilation between the lighter chargino or second-lightest neutralino and the LSP is reduced substantially such that the LSP mass does not have to be very heavy. Consequently, an almost pure Higgsino LSP with its mass ~100 GeV in the BMSSM can account for all the relic density of cold dark matter in the Universe unless tan(beta) is too large.

We then obtain an upper limit on the invisible width of the Higgs boson, numerically it is less than 20-120 MeV for $m_h \simeq 120 - 180$ GeV. Implications for Higgs boson search are also discussed.

Reducing the Spectral Index in Supernatural Inflation

Supernatural inflation is an attractive model based just on a flat direction with soft SUSY breaking mass terms in the framework of supersymmetry. The beauty of the model is inferred from its name that the model needs no fine-tuning. However, the prediction of the spectral index is $n_s \gae 1$, in contrast to experimental data. In this paper, we show that the beauty of supernatural inflation with the spectral index reduced to $n_s=0.96$ without any fine-tuning, by considering the general feature that a flat direction is lifted by a non-renormalizable term with an A-term.

Right-Handed Sneutrino Curvaton and non-Gaussianity

In this paper, we explore the parameter space for a Right-Handed (RH) sneutrino curvaton that can generate large non-Gaussianity without assuming any particular inflation sector. The mass of the RH sneutrino is suggested from a discussion on the initial condition of the curvaton field. It is shown that a small Yukawa coupling is generally required for a successful RH sneutrino curvaton. However, the Yukawa coupling can be larger if we consider the braneworld scenario. Some general discussion about the spectral index in curvaton scenario is also provided.

Super Hilltop Inflation

In this paper, we consider logarithmic radiative corrections and higher order terms to the supersymmetric hilltop F- and D-term hybrid inflation models. Conventional F- and D-term hybrid inflation only predicts $n_s \gae 0.98$. We show that via a positive quadratic and a negative quartic correction the spectral index can be reduced to $n_s=0.96$ suggested from latest WMAP result and also cosmic string problem appeared in SUSY hybrid inflation can be solved with mild tuning of the parameters if $κ\lae 0.01$ for F-term inflation and $g \lae 0.05$ for D-term inflation.

Supernatural A-term Inflation

Following \cite{Lin:2009yt}, we explore the parameter space of the case when the supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking scale is lower, for example, in gauge mediated SUSY breaking model. During inflation, the form of the potential is $V_0$ plus MSSM (MSSM stands for Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model) (or A term (It is called A-term inflation when the inflaton field is any direction (gauge or singlet) that generates an A-term.)) inflation. We show that the model works for a wide range of the potential $V_0$ with the soft SUSY breaking mass $m\sim O(1)$ TeV. The implication to MSSM (or A-term) inflation is that the flat directions which is lifted by the non-renormalizable terms described by the superpotential $W=λ_p ϕ^{p-1}/M^{p-3}_P$ with $p=4$ and $p=5$ are also suitable to be an inflaton field for $λ_p=O(1)$ provided there is an additional false vacuum term $V_0$ with appropriate magnitude. The flat directions corresponds to $p=6$ also works for $0 \lae V_0/M_P^4 \lae 10^{-40}$.

Decay of Z Boson into Photon and Unparticle

We study the decay of the standard model Z boson into unparticle plus a single photon through a one-loop process. As in the anomaly type decay, only the axial-vector part of the Z coupling matching with the vector unparticle and/or the vector part of the Z coupling matching with the axial-vector unparticle can give a nonzero contribution to the decay. We show that the photon spectrum terminates at the end point in accord with Yang's theorem. Existing data on single photon production at LEP I is used to constrain the unparticle sector.

Hidden fermion as milli-charged dark matter in Stueckelberg Z' model

We augment the hidden Stueckelberg $Z'$ model by a pair of Dirac fermions in the hidden sector, in which the $Z'$ has a coupling strength comparable to weak scale coupling. We show that this hidden fermion-antifermion pair could be a milli-charged dark matter candidate with a viable relic density. Existing terrestrial and astrophysical searches on milli-charged particles do not place severe constraints on this hidden fermion. We calculate the flux of monochromatic photons coming from the Galactic center due to pair annihilation of these milli-charged particles and show that it is within reach of the next generation $γ$-ray experiments. The characteristic signature of this theoretical endeavor is that the Stueckelberg $Z'$ boson has a large invisible width decaying into the hidden fermion-antifermion pair. We show that existing Drell-Yan data do not constrain this model yet. Various channels of singly production of this $Z'$ boson at the LHC and ILC are explored.

Associated production of a light pseudoscalar Higgs boson with a chargino pair in the NMSSM

In the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model (NMSSM), the unique $λS H_u H_d$ in the superpotential gives rise to a coupling involving the lighter pseudoscalar Higgs boson and a pair of charged or neutral Higgsinos, even in the limit of zero mixing between the two pseudoscalar Higgs bosons. We study the associated production of a very light pseudoscalar Higgs boson with a pair of charginos. The novel signature involves a pair of charged leptons from chargino decays and a pair of photons from the pseudoscalar Higgs boson decay, plus large missing energy at the LHC and ILC. The signal may help us to distinguish the NMSSM from MSSM, provided that the experiment can resolve the two photons from the decay of the pseudoscalar Higgs boson.

Associated production of a single heavy T-quark in the littlest and simplest little Higgs models

The colored SU(2)-singlet heavy T-quark is one of the most crucial ingredients in little Higgs models, which is introduced to cancel the largest contribution of the SM top quark to the Higgs boson mass at one-loop level. In two representative little Higgs models, the littlest Higgs model and the SU(3) simplest Higgs model, we comprehensively study the single heavy T-quark production at Large Hadron Collider (LHC). After presenting the possibility of relatively light (~500 GeV) T-quark in the simplest little Higgs model, we consider all the relevant processes, the 2->2 process of qb->q'T, the 2->3 process of qg->q'Tb, the s-channel process of q bar(q)'->T bar{b}, and the gluon fusion process of gg->T bar{t}. We found that the 2->3 process can be quite important, as its cross section is about 30% of the 2->2 one and it is dominant in high p_T distributions. The s-channel and the gluon fusion processes also show distinctive features in spite of their suppressed cross sections. In the gluon fusion process of the simplest little Higgs model, for example, the pseudo-scalar contribution is rather dominant over the Higgs contribution for relatively light M_T.

A note on Charmed and Bottomed Pentaquark Production by Fragmentation

H1 Collaboration recently observed the charmed pentaquark. In this short note, we point out that the dominant production mechanism for pentaquark consisting of a heavy quark is heavy quark fragmentation. We obtain a crude estimate on the fragmentation probability for charm quark into Theta_c^0, based on the known fragmentation probabilities of charm quark into mesons and baryons: f(c-bar --> Theta_c^0) =~ (2-7) x 10^{-3}. Similarly, we also obtain the fragmentation probability for bottom quark into Theta_b^+: f(b-bar --> Theta_b^+) =~ (5-20) x 10^{-3}. We also estimate the prospect of observing Theta_c^0 and Theta_b^+ at HERA, LEP, and Tevatron.

Collider Phenomenology of Light Strange-beauty Squarks

Strong mixing between right-handed strange and beauty squarks is a possible solution to the CP violation discrepancy in $B\to ϕK_S$ decay as recently suggested by the Belle data. In this scenario, thanks to the strong mixing one of the strange-beauty squarks can be as light as 200 GeV, even though the generic supersymmetry scale is at TeV. In this work, we study the production of this light right-handed strange-beauty squark at hadronic colliders and discuss the detection in various decay scenarios. Detection prospect at the Tevatron Run II is good for the strange-beauty squark mass up to about 300 GeV.

Pentaquark Theta+, constituent quark structures, and prediction of charmed Theta(c)^0 and bottomed Theta(b)^+

The newly observed $Θ^+$ resonance is believed to be a pentaquark with the constituent quarks $uudd\bar s$. There are a few options for the constituent quark structure. Some advocate diquark-diquark-antiquark $(ud)$-$(ud)$-$\bar s$ while others favor diquark-triquark $(ud)$-$(ud\bar s)$. We use the color-spin hyperfine interaction to examine the energy levels of these structures, and we find that the diquark-diquark-antiquark structure is slight favored. We proceed to write down the flavor triplet and antisextet of the charmed or bottomed exotic baryons with internal $qqqq\bar Q$ quarks. We also estimate the mass of $Θ_c^0$ and $Θ_b^+$.

Neutrino mass patterns, WMAP, and Neutrinoless double beta decay

Based on the observed neutrino mass-square differences and mixings, we derive a few general patterns for the neutrino mass matrix in the flavor basis, which can correctly describe the atmospheric and solar neutrino data. Upon the most recent result on the absolute neutrino mass bound from WMAP, we can rule out a large portion of the parameter space that claimed by the positive signal in the Heidelberg-Moscow $0νββ$ experiment. In the case when one of the majorana phases is $π$, the effective neutrino mass obtained is inconsistent with the claim.

Comparison of high-energy galactic and atmospheric tau neutrino flux

We compare the tau neutrino flux arising from the galaxy and the earth atmosphere for 10^3 < E/GeV < 10^11. The intrinsic and oscillated tau neutrino fluxes from both sources are calculated. The intrinsic galactic ν_τ flux (E > 10^3 GeV) is calculated by considering the interactions of high-energy cosmic-rays with the matter present in our galaxy, whereas the oscillated galactic ν_τ flux is coming from the oscillation of the galactic ν_μ flux. For the intrinsic atmospheric ν_τ flux, we extend the validity of a previous calculation from E < 10^6 GeV up to E < 10^11 GeV. The oscillated atmospheric ν_τ flux is, on the other hand, rather suppressed. We find that, for 10^3 < E/GeV < 5\cdot 10^7, the oscillated ν_τ flux along the galactic plane dominates over the maximal intrinsic atmospheric ν_τ flux, i.e., the flux along the horizontal direction. We also briefly mention the presently envisaged prospects for observing these high-energy tau neutrinos.

Mini-review on Collider Signatures for Extra Dimensions

In this talk, I briefly review collider signatures for two models of extra dimensions. The first one was proposed by Arkani-Hamed {\it et al.} that gravity is free to propagate in extra dimensions of very large size ($\alt 1$ mm). Collider signatures for this model can be divided into two types: (i) emission of real gravitons into extra dimensions, and (ii) exchanges of virtual gravitons. The second model was proposed by Pomarol {\it et al.} and Dienes {\it et al.} that the SM gauge bosons are allowed to propagate in extra dimensions. Collider signatures for the second model are due to the existence of the Kaluza-Klein (KK) states of $γ$, $W$, $Z$, and $g$ bosons.

$B_c$ meson production at the Tevatron Revisited

CDF recently measured the quantity $\frac{σ(B_c^+)}{σ(B^+)} \frac{{\rm BR}(B_c^+ \to J/ψ\ell^+ ν)}{{\rm BR}(B^+ \to J/ψK^+)}$, {}from which we determine the ratio $\frac{σ(B_c^+)}{σ(\bar b)}$ to be $(2.08\err{1.06}{0.95})\times 10^{-3}$. In this note, we show that the ratio $\frac{σ(B_c^+)}{σ(\bar b)}$ obtained by dividing the $σ(B_c^+)$ by the leading order $σ(\bar b)$ is consistent with this derived CDF measurement. We calculate the cross section $σ(B_c^+)$ using the perturbative QCD fragmentation functions of Braaten, Cheung, and Yuan and the corresponding induced gluon fragmentation functions, with the charm-quark mass $m_c$ as a parameter. We also estimate the parameter $m_c$ from the CDF data and then predict the production rate at RunII.

Global Lepton-Quark Neutral Current Constraint on Low Scale Gravity Model

We perform a global analysis of the lepton-quark neutral current data on the low scale gravity model, which arises from the extra dimensions. The global data include HERA neutral current deep-inelastic scattering, Drell-yan production at the Tevatron, and fermion pair production at LEPII. The Drell-yan production, due to the large invariant mass data, provides the strongest constraint. Combining all data, the effective Planck scale must be larger than about 1.12 TeV for $n=3$ and 0.94 TeV for $n=4$ at 95%CL.

Contact Interactions and high-Q2 events in e^+ p collisions at HERA

We consider $e e q q$ contact interactions as a possible origin of an excess of events above Standard Model predictions in $e^+ p \to e^+ jet$ at high $Q^2$ observed by the H1 and ZEUS collaborations at HERA. The HERA data prefer chirality RL or LR contact terms and atomic physics parity violation measurements severely limit parity-odd contact terms. With equal left-right and right-left chirality interactions at an effective scale of order 3 TeV we are able to reproduce the main features of the HERA data and still be consistent with Drell-Yan pair production at the Tevatron and hadron production at LEP 2 and TRISTAN.

Probing Non-standard Top Couplings Using spin-correlation

Top spin correlation has been shown to be nontrivial in hadronic top-pair production, and can be realized by the asymmetries of the decay products of the top quark and antiquark. We show in this work that the top spin correlation is a sensitive probe to the anomalous top-quark couplings beyond the standard model. Specifically, we look at the anomalous chromomagnetic and chromoelectric dipole moments, as well as a right-handed component in the weak decay of the top quark. We found a few measurable asymmetries formed by the decay products of the top-quark pair that vary in accord with the spin correlation.

Hadronic Production of S-wave and P-wave Charmed Beauty Mesons via Heavy Quark Fragmentation

At hadron colliders the dominant production mechanism of $(\bar bc)$ mesons with large transverse momentum is due to parton fragmentation. We compute the rates and transverse momentum spectra for production of S-wave and P-wave $(\bar b c)$ mesons at the Tevatron via the direct fragmentation of the bottom antiquark as well as the Altarelli-Parisi induced gluon fragmentation. Since all the radially and orbitally excited $(\bar b c)$ mesons below the $BD$ flavor threshold will cascade into the pseudoscalar ground state $B_c$ through electromagnetic and/or hadronic transitions, they all contribute to the inclusive production of $B_c$. The contributions of the excited S-wave and P-wave states to the inclusive production of $B_c$ are 58 and 23\%, respectively, and hence significant.

Probing Strongly-interacting Electroweak Dynamics through $W^+W^-/ZZ$ Ratios at Future $e^+e^-$ Colliders

We point out that the ratio of $W^+ W^- \to W^+ W^-$ and $W^+W^- \to ZZ$ cross sections is a sensitive probe of the dynamics of electroweak symmetry breaking, in the CM energy region $\sqrt {s_{\rm ww}^{}} \agt 1$~TeV where vector boson scattering may well become strong. We suggest ways in which this ratio can be extracted at a 1.5 TeV $e^+e^-$ linear collider, using $W^\pm,Z \to jj$ hadronic decays and relying on dijet mass resolution to provide statistical discrimination between $W^\pm$ and $Z$. $WW$ fusion processes studied here are unique for exploring scalar resonances of mass about 1 TeV and are complementary to studies via the direct channel $e^+ e^- \rightarrow W^+W^-$ for the vector and non-resonant cases. With an integrated luminosity of 200 fb$^{-1}$, the signals obtained are statistically significant. Comparison with a study of $e^-e^- \rightarrow ννW^-W^-$ process is made. Enhancements of the signal rate from using a polarized electron beam, or at a 2 TeV $e^+e^-$ linear collider and possible higher energy $μ^+μ^-$ colliders, are also presented.

Spin Alignment in the Production of Vector Mesons with Charm and/or Beauty via Heavy Quark Fragmentation

We calculate the process-independent fragmentation functions for a $\bar b$ antiquark to fragment into longitudinally and transversely polarized $B_c^*$ ($^3S_1$) mesons to leading order in the QCD strong coupling constant. In the special case of equal quark mass we recover previous results for the fragmentation of $c\to ψ$ and $b\toΥ$. Various spin asymmetry parameters are defined as measures of the relative population of the longitudinally and transversely polarized vector meson states. In the heavy quark mass limit $m_b \to \infty$ our polarized fragmentation functions obey heavy quark spin symmetry, we therefore apply them as a model to describe the fragmentation of charm and bottom into heavy-light mesons like $D^*$ and $B^*$. The spin asymmetry parameter, $α(z)$, is consistent with the existing CLEO data for $D^*$. The scaling behavior of $\langle z \rangle$ is studied in detail. We find excellent agreement between the predictions of $\langle z \rangle$ from our fragmentation functions and the experimental data for $D^*$ and $B^*$ from the LEP, CLEO, and ARGUS detectors. Finally, we also point out that the spin asymmetry depends significantly on the transverse momentum $p_\perp$ of the vector mesons relative to the fragmentation axis.

$B_c$ Meson Productions Via Induced Gluon Fragmentation

Gluons cannot directly fragment into $B_c$ mesons until at order $α_s^3$. However, the Altarelli-Parisi evolution of the $\bar b$-quark fragmentation functions $D_{\bar b \to B_c}(z)$ and $D_{\bar b \to B_c^*}(z)$ from the heavy quark mass scales up to the collider energy scale $Q$ can induce the gluon fragmentation functions $D_{g \to B_c}(z)$ and $D_{g \to B_c^*}(z)$, respectively, through the gluon splitting $g\to \bar b$ at the order $α_s^3 \, {\rm log} (Q/m_{b,c})$. We will determine these induced gluon fragmentation functions. The $B_c$ meson productions due to the induced gluon fragmentation will be evaluated and compared to the productions by the direct $\bar b$-quark fragmentation. The contribution from the induced gluon fragmentation is found to be a significant portion of the total $B_c$ and $B_c^*$ meson productions, and therefore cannot be ignored.

Finding the Leptonic $WW$ Decay Mode of a Heavy Higgs Boson

We reanalyze the extraction of the heavy Higgs boson signal $H\rightarrow W^+W^-\rightarrow \bar\ellν,\ell\barν$ $(\ell=e\hbox{ or }μ)$ from the Standard Model background at hadron supercolliders, taking into account revised estimates of the top quark background. With new acceptance criteria the detection of the signal remains viable. Perturbative QCD Fragmentation Functions for $B_c$ and $B_c^*$ Production

The dominant production mechanism for ${\bar b} c$ bound states in high energy processes is the production of a high energy ${\bar b}$ or $c$ quark, followed by its fragmentation into the ${\bar b} c$ state. We calculate the fragmentation functions for the production of the S-wave states $B_c$ and $B_c^*$ to leading order in the QCD coupling constant. The fragmentation probabilities for ${\bar b} \rightarrow B_c$ and ${\bar b} \rightarrow B_c^*$ are approximately $2.2 \times 10^{-4}$ and $3.1 \times 10^{-4}$, while those for $c \rightarrow B_c$ and $c \rightarrow B_c^*$ are smaller by almost two orders of magnitude.

Possibility of Studying Electroweak Symmetry Breaking at γγColliders

Here we present another possible process that involves spectator $W$'s and $W_L$'s, the latter of which are scattered strongly by the interactions of the EWSBS. We also show that this process should be safe from the transverse backgrounds and it can probe the structure of the EWSBS.

Z^0 Decay into Charmonium via Charm Quark Fragmentation

In decays of the $Z^0$, the dominant mechanism for the direct production of charmonium states is the decay of the $Z^0$ into a charm quark or antiquark followed by its fragmentation into the charmonium state. We calculate the fragmentation functions describing the splitting of charm quarks into S-wave charmonium states to leading order in the QCD coupling constant. Leading logarithms of $M_Z/m_c$ are summed up using Altarelli-Parisi evolution equations. Our analytic result agrees with the complete leading order calculation of the rate for $Z^0 \rightarrow ψc {\bar c}$. We also use our fragmentation functions to calculate the production rate of heavy quarkonium states in $W^\pm$, top quark, and Higgs decays.
