An Improved Reinforcement Learning Algorithm for Learning to Branch

Most combinatorial optimization problems can be formulated as mixed integer linear programming (MILP), in which branch-and-bound (B\&B) is a general and widely used method. Recently, learning to branch has become a hot research topic in the intersection of machine learning and combinatorial optimization. In this paper, we propose a novel reinforcement learning-based B\&B algorithm. Similar to offline reinforcement learning, we initially train on the demonstration data to accelerate learning massively. With the improvement of the training effect, the agent starts to interact with the environment with its learned policy gradually. It is critical to improve the performance of the algorithm by determining the mixing ratio between demonstration and self-generated data. Thus, we propose a prioritized storage mechanism to control this ratio automatically. In order to improve the robustness of the training process, a superior network is additionally introduced based on Double DQN, which always serves as a Q-network with competitive performance. We evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm over three public research benchmarks and compare it against strong baselines, including three classical heuristics and one state-of-the-art imitation learning-based branching algorithm. The results show that the proposed algorithm achieves the best performance among compared algorithms and possesses the potential to improve B\&B algorithm performance continuously.

Effects of Active Galactic Nucleus Feedback on Cold Gas Depletion and Quenching of Central Galaxies

We investigate the influence of active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback on the galaxy cold gas content and its connection to galaxy quenching in three hydrodynamical simulations of Illustris, IllustrisTNG and SIMBA. By comparing to the observed atomic and molecular neutral hydrogen measurements for central galaxies, we find that Illustris over-predicts the cold gas masses in star-forming galaxies and significantly under-predicts them for quenched galaxies. IllustrisTNG performs better in this comparison than Illustris, but quenched galaxies retain too much cold gas compared with observations. SIMBA shows good agreement with observations, by depleting the global cold gas reservoir for quenched galaxies. We find that the discrepancies in IllustrisTNG are caused by its weak kinetic AGN feedback that only redistributes the cold gas from the inner disks to the outer regions and reduces the inner cold gas densities. It agrees with observations much better when only the cold gas within the stellar disk is considered to infer the star formation rates. From dependences of cold gas reservoir on the black hole mass and Eddington ratio, we find that the cumulative energy release during the black hole growth is the dominant reason for the cold gas depletion and thus the galaxy quenching. We further measure the central stellar surface density within 1 kpc ($Σ_1$) for the high-resolution run of IllustrisTNG and find a tight correlation between $Σ_1$ and black hole mass. It suggests that the observed decreasing trend of cold gas mass with $Σ_1$ is also a reflection of the black hole growth.

A high repetition rate picosecond LiNbO3 THz parametric amplifier and the parametric gain study

A high repetition rate, picosecond THz parametric amplifier (TPA) with a LiNbO3 (LN) crystal has been demonstrated in this work. At 10 kHz repetition rate, a peak power of 200 W and an average power of 12 μW have been obtained over a wide range around 2 THz; at 100 kHz repetition rate, a maximum peak power of 18 W and average power of 10.8 μW have been obtained. The parametric gain of the LN crystal was also investigated and a modified Schwarz-Maier model was introduced to interpret the experimental results.

Self-Seeded FEL Wavelength Extension with High-Gain Harmonic Generation

We study a self-seeded high-gain harmonic generation (HGHG) free-electron laser (FEL) scheme to extend the wavelength of a soft X-ray FEL. This scheme uses a regular self-seeding monochromator to generate a seed laser at the wavelength of 1.52 nm, followed by a HGHG configuration to produce coherent, narrow-bandwidth harmonic radiations at the GW level. The 2nd and 3rd harmonic radiation are investigated with start-to-end simulations. Detailed studies on the FEL performance and shot-to-shot fluctuations are presented.

Truly trapped rainbow by utilizing nonreciprocal waveguides

The concept of a "trapped rainbow" has generated considerable interest for optical data storage and processing. It aims to trap different frequency components of the wave packet at different positions permanently. However, all the previously proposed structures cannot truly achieve this effect, due to the difficulties in suppressing the reflection caused by strong intermodal coupling and distinguishing different frequency components simultaneously. In this article, we found a physical mechanism to achieve a truly "trapped rainbow" storage of electromagnetic wave. We utilize nonreciprocal waveguides under a tapered magnetic field to achieve this and such a trapping effect is stable even under fabrication disorders. We also observe hot spots and relatively long duration time of the trapped wave around critical positions through frequency domain and time domain simulations. The physical mechanism we found has a variety of potential applications ranging from wave harvesting and storage to nonlinearity enhancement.

Drive laser system for the DC-SRF photoinjector at Peking University

Photoinjectors are widely used for linear accelerators as electron sources to generate high-brightness electron beam. Drive laser, which determines the timing structure and quality of the electron beam, is a crucial device of photoinjector. A new drive laser system has been designed and constructed for the upgraded 3.5-cell DC-SRF photoinjector at Peking University. The drive laser system consists of a 1064 nm laser oscillator, a four- stage amplifier, the second and fourth harmonic generators, the optical system to transfer the UV pulses to the photocathode, and the synchronization system. The drive laser system has been successfully applied in the stable operation of DC-SRF photoinjector and its performance meets the requirements. 266 nm laser with an average power close to 1W can be delivered to illuminate the Cs2Te photocathode and the instability is less than 5% for long time operation. The design consideration for improving the UV laser quality, a detailed description of laser system, and its performance are presented in this paper.

Mechanical analysis of a $β=0.09 $ 162.5MHz taper HWR cavity

One superconducting taper-type half-wave resonator (HWR) with frequency of 162.5MHz, \b{eta} of 0.09 has been developed at Peking University, which is used to accelerate high current proton ($\sim$ 100mA) and $D^{+}$($\sim$ 50mA). The radio frequency (RF) design of the cavity has been accomplished. Herein, we present the mechanical analysis of the cavity which is also an important aspect in superconducting cavity design. The frequency shift caused by bath helium pressure and Lorenz force, and the tuning by deforming the cavity along the beam axis will be analyzed in this paper.

One-way surface magnetoplasmon cavity and its application for nonreciprocal devices

We theoretically analyze surface magnetoplasmon modes in a compact circular cavity made of magneto-optical material under a static magnetic field. Such a cavity provides two different physical mechanisms for the surface wave to circulate in a unidirectional manner around the cavity, which offers more freedom to realize one-way surface wave. We also show the interaction between this one-way cavity and waveguides, through an example of a circulator, which lays the fundamental groundwork for potential nonreciprocal devices.

Beam breakup simulation study for high energy ERL

The maximum beam current can be accelerated in an Energy Recovery Linac (ERL) can be severely limited by the transverse multi-pass beam breakup instability (BBU), especially in future ERL light sources with multi-GeV high energy beam energy and more than 100 mA average current. In this paper, the multi-pass BBU of such a high energy ERL is studied based on the simulation on a 3-GeV ERL light source proposed by KEK. It is expected to provide a reference to the future high energy ERL projects by this work.

The discharge characteristics of the DUHOCAMIS with a high magnetic bottle-shaped field

For the purpose to produce high intensity, multiply charged metal ion beams, the DUHOCAMIS (dual hollow cathode ion source for metal ions) was derived from the hot cathode Penning ion source combined with the hollow cathode sputtering experiments in 2007. It was interesting to investigate the behavior of this discharge geometry in a stronger magnetic bottle-shaped field. So a new test bench for DUHOCAMIS with a high magnetic bottle-shaped field up to 0.6 T has been set up at Peking University, on which have been made primary experiments in connection with discharge characteristics of the source. The experiments with magnetic fields from 0.13 T to 0.52 T have shown that the magnetic flux densities are very sensitive to the discharge behavior: discharge curves and ion spectra. It has been found that the slope of discharge curves in a very wide range can be controlled by changing the magnetic field as well as regulated by adjusting cathode heating power. On the other hand, by comparison of discharge curves between dual hollow cathode discharge (DHCD) mode and PIG discharge mode, it was found a much stronger magnetic effect occurred on DHCD mode. In this paper, the new test bench with ion source structure is described in detail; and main experimental results are presented and discussed, including the effects of cathode heating power and magnetic flux density on discharge characteristics, also the ion spectra. The effects of the magnetic field on the source operating are emphasized, and a unique behavior of the DUHOCAMIS operating in the high magnetic field is expected and discussed especially.

The low level radio frequency control system for DC-SRF photo-injector at Peking University

A low level radio frequency (LLRF) control system is designed and constructed at Peking University, which is for the DC-SRF photo injector operating at 2K. Besides with continuous wave (CW), the system is also reliable with pulsed RF and pulsed beam, the stability of amplitude and phase can achieve 0.13% and 0.1°respectively. It is worth noting that the system works perfectly when the cavity is driven at both generator driven resonator (GDR) and self-excited loop (SEL), the latter is useful in measuring the performance of the cavity.
