Angular distribution of $γ$ rays from the p-wave resonance of $^{118}$Sn

The neutron energy-dependent angular distribution of $γ$ rays from $^{117}{\rm Sn}(n,γ)$ reaction was measured with germanium detectors and a pulsed neutron beam. The angular distribution was clearly observed in $γ$-ray emissions with an energy of 9327 keV which corresponds to the transition from a neutron resonance of $^{117}{\rm Sn}+n$ to the ground state of $^{118}{\rm Sn}$. The angular distribution causes an angular-dependent asymmetric resonance shape. An asymmetry $A_{\rm LH}$ was defined as $(N_{\rm L}-N_{\rm H})/(N_{\rm L}+N_{\rm H})$, where $N_{\rm L}$ and $N_{\rm H}$ are integrated values for lower- and higher-energy regions of a neutron resonance, respectively. We found that the $A_{\rm LH}$ has the angular dependence of $(A \cos θ_γ+B)$, where $θ_γ$ is the $γ$-ray emission angle with respect to the incident neutron momentum, with $A=0.394 \pm 0.073$ and $B = 0.118 \pm 0.029$ in the 1.33 eV p-wave resonance.

Development and application of a $^3$He Neutron Spin Filter at J-PARC

We are developing a neutron polarizer with polarized $^3$He gas, referred to as a $^3$He spin filter, based on the Spin Exchange Optical Pumping (SEOP) for polarized neutron scattering experiments at Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) of Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). A $^3$He gas-filling station was constructed at J-PARC, and several $^3$He cells with long spin relaxation times have been fabricated using the gas-filling station. A laboratory has been prepared in the MLF beam hall for polarizing $^3$He cells, and compact pumping systems with laser powers of 30~W and 110~W, which can be installed onto a neutron beamline, have been developed. A $^3$He polarization of 85% was achieved at a neutron beamline by using the pumping system with the 110~W laser. Recently, the first user experiment utilizing the $^3$He spin filter was conducted, and there have been several more since then. The development and utilization of $^3$He spin filters at MLF of J-PARC are reported.

Neutron lifetime measurement with pulsed cold neutrons

The neutron lifetime has been measured by comparing the decay rate with the reaction rate of $^3$He nuclei of a pulsed neutron beam from the spallation neutron source at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). The decay rate and the reaction rate were determined by simultaneously detecting electrons from the neutron decay and protons from the $^3$He(n,p)$^3$H reaction using a gas chamber of which working gas contains diluted $^3$He. The measured neutron lifetime was $898\,\pm\,10\,_{\rm stat}\,^{+15}_{-18}\,_{\rm sys}\,$s.

A neutron detector with spatial resolution of submicron using fine-grained nuclear emulsion

We have been developing a neutron detector with spatial resolution of submicron by loading 6Li into fine-grained nuclear emulsion. By exposure to thermal neutrons, tracks from neutron capture events were observed. From their grain density, spatial resolution was estimated. Detection efficiency was also measured by an experiment with cold neutrons.

Soft spin dipole giant resonances in 40Ca

High resolution experimental data has been obtained for the 40,42,44,48Ca(3He,t)Sc charge exchange reaction at 420 MeV beam energy, which favors the spin-isospin excitations. The measured angular distributions were analyzed for each state separately, and the relative spin dipole strength has been extracted for the first time. The low-lying spin-dipole strength distribution in 40Sc shows some interesting periodic gross feature. It resembles to a soft, dumped multi-phonon vibrational band with $\hbarω$= 1.8 MeV, which might be associated to pairing vibrations around $^{40}$Ca.

Possible evidence of tensor interactions in 16O observed via (p,d) reaction

We have measured 16O(p,d) reaction using 198-, 295- and 392-MeV proton beams to search for a direct evidence on the effect of the tensor interactions in light nucleus. Differential cross sections of the one-neutron transfer reactions populating the ground states and several low-lying excited states in 15O were measured. Comparing the ratios of the cross sections for each excited state to the one for the ground state over a wide range of momentum transfer, we found a marked enhancement for the positive-parity state(s). The observation indicates large components of high-momentum neutrons in the initial ground-state configurations, due possibly to the tensor interactions.

Temperature independent diffuse scattering and elastic lattice deformations in relaxor PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3

The results of diffuse neutron scattering experiment on PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3 single crystal above the Burns temperature are reported. It is shown that the high temperature elastic diffuse component is highly anisotropic in low-symmetry Brillouin zones and this anisotropy can be described using Huang scattering formalism assuming that the scattering originates from mesoscopic lattice deformations due to elastic defects. The qualitative agreement between this model and the experimental data is achieved with simple isotropic defects. It is demonstrated that weak satellite maxima near the Bragg reflections can be interpreted as the finite resolution effect.

The $^{150}$Nd($^3$He,$t$) and $^{150}$Sm($t$,$^3$He) reactions with applications to $ββ$ decay of $^{150}$Nd

The $^{150}$Nd($^3$He,$t$) reaction at 140 MeV/u and $^{150}$Sm($t$,$^3$He) reaction at 115 MeV/u were measured, populating excited states in $^{150}$Pm. The transitions studied populate intermediate states of importance for the (neutrinoless) $ββ$ decay of $^{150}$Nd to $^{150}$Sm. Monopole and dipole contributions to the measured excitation-energy spectra were extracted by using multipole decomposition analyses. The experimental results were compared with theoretical calculations obtained within the framework of Quasiparticle Random-Phase Approximation (QRPA), which is one of the main methods employed for estimating the half-life of the neutrinoless $ββ$ decay ($0νββ$) of $^{150}$Nd. The present results thus provide useful information on the neutrino responses for evaluating the $0νββ$ and $2νββ$ matrix elements. The $2νββ$ matrix element calculated from the Gamow-Teller transitions through the lowest $1^{+}$ state in the intermediate nucleus is maximally about half of that deduced from the half-life measured in $2νββ$ direct counting experiments and at least several transitions through $1^{+}$ intermediate states in $^{150}$Pm are required to explain the $2νββ$ half-life. Because Gamow-Teller transitions in the $^{150}$Sm($t$,$^3$He) experiment are strongly Pauli-blocked, the extraction of Gamow-Teller strengths was complicated by the excitation of the $2\hbarω$, $ΔL=0$, $ΔS=1$ isovector spin-flip giant monopole resonance (IVSGMR). However, the near absence of Gamow-Teller transition strength made it possible to cleanly identify this resonance, and the strength observed is consistent with the full exhaustion of the non-energy-weighted sum rule for the IVSGMR.

Renormalization of Commensurate Magnetic Peak in Ni-doped La$_{1.85}$Sr$_{0.15}$CuO$_{4}$

We have studied the magnetic excitations in impurity doped La$_{1.85}$Sr$_{0.15}$Cu$_{1-y}$A$_{y}$O$_{4}$ (A=Ni or Zn) by neutron scattering. The dispersion for Zn:$y=0.017$ is similar to that for the impurity free sample: incommensurate peaks with the incommensurability $δ=0.12\pm0.01$ (rlu) do not change their positions up to 21 meV. On the other hand, for Ni:$y=0.029$, two incommensurate peaks observed at low energies suddenly change into a broad commensurate peak at $E_\mathrm{cross}=15$ meV. Compared to the impurity free sample with a similar Sr-concentration $x=0.16$, [B. Vignolle {\it et al.} Nature Physics {\bf 3} (2007) 163], $E_\mathrm{cross}$ for Ni:$y=0.029$ is decreased by nearly the same factor for the reduction in $T_{c}$. This is very similar to the shift of the resonance energy ($E_\mathrm{res}$) in Ni-doped YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$.[Y. Sidis {\it et al.}: Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 84} (2000) 5900]. These common impurity effects on the shift of $E_\mathrm{cross}$ and $E_\mathrm{res}$ suggest the same magnetic origin for the resonance peak in YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_δ$ and that for a crossing point of upward and downward dispersions in the La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$. We propose that the sudden change in the dispersion is better described by a crossover from incommensurate spin fluctuations to a gapped spin wave rather than a hourglass-like dispersion.

Soft phonon columns on the edge of the Brillouin zone in the relaxor PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3

We report lattice dynamical measurements, made using neutron inelastic scattering methods, of the relaxor perovskite PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3 (PMN) at momentum transfers near the edge of the Brillouin zone. Unusual"columns" of phonon scattering that are localized in momentum, but extended in energy, are seen at both high-symmetry points along the zone edge: \vec{Q}_R={1/2, 1/2, 1/2} and \vec{Q}_M={1/2,1/2,0}. These columns soften at ~400 K which is similar to the onset temperature of the zone-center diffuse scattering, indicating a competition between ferroelectric and antiferroelectric distortions. We propose a model for the atomic displacements associated with these phonon modes that is based on a combination of structure factors and group theoretical analysis. This analysis suggests that the scattering is not from tilt modes (rotational modes of oxygen octahedra), but from zone-boundary optic modes that are associated with the displacement of Pb^{2+} and O^{2-} ions. Whereas similar columns of scattering have been reported in metallic and (less commonly) molecular systems, they are unusual in insulating materials, particularly in ferroelectrics; therefore, the physical origin of this inelastic feature in PMN is unknown. We speculate that the underlying disorder contributes to this unique anomaly.

Hole Doping Effects on Spin-gapped Na2Cu2TeO6 via Topochemical Na Deficiency

We report the magnetic susceptibility and NMR studies of a spin-gapped layered compound Na2Cu2TeO6 (the spin gap $Δ\sim$ 250 K), the hole doping effect on the Cu2TeO6 plane via a topochemical Na deficiency by soft chemical treatment, and the static spin vacancy effect by nonmagnetic impurity Zn substitution for Cu. A finite Knight shift at the $^{125}$Te site was observed for pure Na2Cu2TeO6. The negative hyperfine coupling constant $^{125}A_{tr}$ is an evidence for the existence of a superexchange pathway of the Cu-O-Te-O-Cu bond. It turned out that both the Na deficiency and Zn impurities induce a Curie-type magnetism in the uniform spin susceptibility in an external magnetic field of 1 T, but only the Zn impurities enhance the low-temperature $^{23}$Na nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate whereas the Na deficiency suppresses it. A spin glass behavior was observed for the Na-deficient samples but not for the Zn-substituted samples. The dynamics of the unpaired moments of the doped holes are different from that of the spin vacancy in the spin-gapped Cu2TeO6 planes.

Two ferromagnetic phases in La1-xSrxMnO3(x ~1/8)

It was discovered in La1-xSrxMnO3(x~1/8) that a field induced phase transition occurs from a ferromagnetic metal(FM) phase to a ferromagnetic insulator (FI) phase. The magnetization shows a sharp jump at the transition field accompanying with a remarkable increase of magnetoresistance. Striction measurements clarified that this transition is associated with the structural change from a Jahn-Teller(JT) distorted orthorhombic phase to a pseudo cubic phase. These results evidently show that the FI phase with a pseudo cubic symmetry is more stable in high fields than the FM phase due to the double exchange interaction. The driving force of this transition is explained by the enhancement of the ferromagnetic superexchange interaction induced by an antiferromagnetic type orbital ordering in the pseudo cubic phase, which was recently found in the anomalous X-ray scattering experiments.
