CodeClinic: Evaluating Automation of Coding Skills for Clinical Reasoning Agents

Clinical reasoning agents based on large language models (LLMs) aim to automate tasks such as intensive care unit (ICU) monitoring and patient state tracking from electronic health records (EHRs). Existing systems typically rely on manually curated clinical tools or skills for concepts such as sepsis detection and organ failure assessment. However, maintaining these tool libraries requires substantial expert effort, while zero-shot querying or code generation often produces inefficient and unreliable reasoning chains, especially under institution-specific clinical policies. We introduce CodeClinic, a benchmark built on MIMIC-IV for evaluating whether LLM agents can synthesize and compose reusable clinical skills instead of relying on fixed toolboxes. The benchmark contains two complementary tasks: longitudinal ICU surveillance and compositional information seeking. The longitudinal setting simulates monitoring patient trajectories with structured decisions every four hours across 25 findings and eight clinical families, while the compositional setting spans 63k instances across 259 tasks in nine domains and is stratified by compositional dependency depth to evaluate increasingly complex multi-step reasoning. We further propose an offline autoformalization pipeline that converts natural-language clinical guidelines into reusable and verified Python skill libraries through iterative LLM refinement. Compared with zero-shot code generation, the resulting libraries improve consistency while reducing per-query token usage by up to 40%.

Correct Is Not Enough: Training Reasoning Planners with Executor-Grounded Rewards

Reinforcement learning with verifiable rewards has become a common way to improve explicit reasoning in large language models, but final-answer correctness alone does not reveal whether the reasoning trace is faithful, reliable, or useful to the model that consumes it. This outcome-only signal can reinforce traces that are right for the wrong reasons, overstate reasoning gains by rewarding shortcuts, and propagate flawed intermediate states in multi-step systems. To this end, we propose TraceLift, a planner-executor training framework that treats reasoning as a consumable intermediate artifact. During planner training, the planner emits tagged reasoning. A frozen executor turns this reasoning into the final artifact for verifier feedback, while an executor-grounded reward shapes the intermediate trace. This reward multiplies a rubric-based Reasoning Reward Model (RM) score by measured uplift on the same frozen executor, crediting traces that are both high-quality and useful. To make reasoning quality directly learnable, we introduce TRACELIFT-GROUPS, a rubric-annotated reason-only dataset built from math and code seed problems. Each example is a same-problem group containing a high-quality reference trace and multiple plausible flawed traces with localized perturbations that reduce reasoning quality or solution support while preserving task relevance. Extensive experiments on code and math benchmarks show that this executor-grounded reasoning reward improves the two-stage planner-executor system over execution-only training, suggesting that reasoning supervision should evaluate not only whether a trace looks good, but also whether it helps the model that consumes it. Delta Attention Residuals

Attention Residuals replace standard additive residual connections with learned softmax attention over previous layer outputs, enabling selective cross-layer routing. However, standard Attention Residuals still attend over cumulative hidden states in previous layers, which are highly redundant. We show that this redundancy leads to routing collapse in deeper layers: attention weights become low-contrast and closer to uniform (max weight ${\approx}$0.2), limiting the model's ability to select informative states in previous layers. This raises a key but underexplored design question: what layer-wise representations should be routed in Attention Residuals? To answer this question, we propose Delta Attention Residuals, which attend over deltas -- the change introduced by each sublayer ($\mathbf{v}_i = \mathbf{h}_{i+1} - \mathbf{h}_i$) -- instead of cumulative states. Delta representations are structurally diverse and yield higher-contrast attention distributions (max weight ${\approx}$0.6), enabling more selective and effective routing across layers. This principle applies at both per-sublayer and block granularity. Across all tested scales (220M--7.6B), Delta Attention Residuals consistently outperform both standard residuals and Attention Residuals, with 1.7--8.2\% validation perplexity gains. Delta Attention Residuals also enables converting pretrained checkpoints into Delta Attention Residuals via standard fine-tuning. GRASP: Graph Agentic Search over Propositions for Multi-hop Question Answering

Agentic retrieval improves multi-hop question answering by giving language models autonomy to iteratively gather evidence. Recent work augments these systems with knowledge graphs for structured traversal, but this combination introduces significant cost: expensive graph construction at index time and compounding token usage at inference time. We introduce Graph Agentic Search over Propositions (GRASP), an agentic system that simultaneously optimizes for high accuracy and minimal token usage in multi-hop question answering. Rather than executing a rigid, singular query, GRASP actively coordinates its retrieval strategy by decomposing multi-hop queries into dependency-aware plans. This enables GRASP to dynamically scale the number of sub-agents according to the complexity of the problem. Each sub-agent resolves its single-hop query by exploring a novel three-layer hierarchical graph of entities, propositions, and passages, using the entity layer for targeted traversal and the proposition layer for high-recall passage retrieval via reciprocal-rank voting. We evaluate GRASP on MuSiQue, 2WikiMultihopQA, and HotpotQA under two settings: open-corpus retrieval and extended context reasoning (LongBench). GRASP achieves the highest QA accuracy in the open retrieval setting on MuSiQue and 2Wiki while using 40-50 percent fewer tokens than IRCoT+HippoRAG2. Furthermore, GRASP leads on EM and F1 across all three datasets in the LongBench setting while using 30 percent fewer tokens than the next most accurate method. Finally, we introduce success economy - the amortized token cost per correct answer, weighted by difficulty - and advocate for efficiency-aware evaluation as a standard practice for agentic QA.

Larger Scale Offers Better Security in the Nakamoto-style Blockchain

Traditional security models for Nakamoto-style blockchains assume instantaneous synchronization among malicious nodes, which overestimate adversarial coordination capability. We revisit these existing models and propose two more realistic security models. First, we propose the static delay model. This model first incorporates adversarial communication delay. It quantifies how the delay constrains the effective growth rate of private chains and yields a closed-form expression for the security threshold. Second, we propose the dynamic delay model that further captures the decay of adversarial corruption capability and the total adversarial delay window. Theoretical analysis shows that private attacks remain optimal under both models. Finally, we prove that large-scale Nakamoto-style blockchains offer better security. This result provided a theoretical foundation for optimizing consensus protocols and assessing the robustness of large-scale blockchains.

LiveFMBench: Unveiling the Power and Limits of Agentic Workflows in Specification Generation

Formal specification is essential for rigorous program verification, yet writing correct specifications remains costly and difficult to automate. Although large language models (LLMs) and agents have shown promising progress, their true capabilities and failure modes remain unclear. We present the first systematic and contamination-aware study of LLM- and agent-based formal specification generation for C programs. We introduce LiveFMBench, a continuously evolving benchmark of 630 ACSL (ANSI/ISO C Specification Language)-annotated C programs, including 360 newly collected cases designed to mitigate data leakage. Using this benchmark, we evaluate direct prompting with different sampling sizes, reasoning-enabled (thinking mode) inference, the agentic pipeline, and perform a fine-grained failure analysis. Experimental results reveal that naive evaluation substantially overestimates performance because models under direct prompting may exhibit unfaithful behaviors, such as deceiving automated provers or ignoring code-context constraints; after excluding such cases, the true specification generation accuracy drops by approximately 20\%. We further find that both increased sampling and thinking mode significantly improve success rates, with smaller models benefiting more from thinking mode. Agentic pipelines are particularly effective under low sampling budgets and on harder datasets. Failure analysis further shows that incorrect loop invariants are the dominant error type, while agentic pipelines notably reduce assertion errors. These results expose fundamental limitations in current LLM-based approaches and suggest they remain far from replacing human-authored formal specifications. SITA: Learning Speaker-Invariant and Tone-Aware Speech Representations for Low-Resource Tonal Languages

Tonal low-resource languages are widely spoken yet remain underserved by modern speech technology. A key challenge is learning representations that are robust to nuisance variation such as gender while remaining tone-aware for different lexical meanings. To address this, we propose SITA, a lightweight adaptation recipe that enforces Speaker-Invariance and Tone-Awareness for pretrained wav2vec-style encoders. SITA uses staged multi-objective training: (i) a cross-gender contrastive objective encourages lexical consistency across speakers, while a tone-repulsive loss prevents tone collapse by explicitly separating same-word different-tone realizations; and (ii) an auxiliary Connectionist Temporal Classification (CTC)-based ASR objective with distillation stabilizes recognition-relevant structure. We evaluate primarily on Hmong, a highly tonal and severely under-resourced language where off-the-shelf multilingual encoders fail to represent tone effectively. On a curated Hmong word corpus, SITA improves cross-gender lexical retrieval accuracy, while maintaining usable ASR accuracy relative to an ASR-adapted XLS-R teacher. We further observe similar gains when transferring the same recipe to Mandarin, suggesting SITA is a general, plug-in approach for adapting multilingual speech encoders to tonal languages.

SWE-Edit: Rethinking Code Editing for Efficient SWE-Agent

Large language model agents have achieved remarkable progress on software engineering tasks, yet current approaches suffer from a fundamental context coupling problem: the standard code editing interface conflates code inspection, modification planning, and edit execution within a single context window, forcing agents to interleave exploratory viewing with strictly formatted edit generation. This causes irrelevant information to accumulate and degrades agent performance. To address this, we propose SWE-Edit, which decomposes code editing into two specialized subagents: a Viewer that extracts task-relevant code on demand, and an Editor that executes modifications from high-level plans--allowing the main agent to focus on reasoning while delegating context-intensive operations to clean context windows. We further investigate what makes an effective editing model: observing that the prevalent find-and-replace format is error-prone, we train Qwen3-8B with GRPO to adaptively select editing modes, yielding improved editing efficiency over single-format baselines. On SWE-bench Verified, SWE-Edit improves resolved rate by 2.1% while reducing inference cost by 17.9%. We additionally propose a code editing benchmark that reliably predicts downstream agentic performance, providing practical guidance for editing model selection. Attentional Graph Convolutional Network for Structure-aware Audio-Visual Scene Classification

Audio-Visual scene understanding is a challenging problem due to the unstructured spatial-temporal relations that exist in the audio signals and spatial layouts of different objects and various texture patterns in the visual images. Recently, many studies have focused on abstracting features from convolutional neural networks while the learning of explicit semantically relevant frames of sound signals and visual images has been overlooked. To this end, we present an end-to-end framework, namely attentional graph convolutional network (AGCN), for structure-aware audio-visual scene representation. First, the spectrogram of sound and input image is processed by a backbone network for feature extraction. Then, to build multi-scale hierarchical information of input features, we utilize an attention fusion mechanism to aggregate features from multiple layers of the backbone network. Notably, to well represent the salient regions and contextual information of audio-visual inputs, the salient acoustic graph (SAG) and contextual acoustic graph (CAG), salient visual graph (SVG), and contextual visual graph (CVG) are constructed for the audio-visual scene representation. Finally, the constructed graphs pass through a graph convolutional network for structure-aware audio-visual scene recognition. Extensive experimental results on the audio, visual and audio-visual scene recognition datasets show that promising results have been achieved by the AGCN methods. Visualizing graphs on the spectrograms and images have been presented to show the effectiveness of proposed CAG/SAG and CVG/SVG that could focus on the salient and semantic relevant regions.

Deep Depth Completion from Extremely Sparse Data: A Survey

Depth completion aims at predicting dense pixel-wise depth from an extremely sparse map captured from a depth sensor, e.g., LiDARs. It plays an essential role in various applications such as autonomous driving, 3D reconstruction, augmented reality, and robot navigation. Recent successes on the task have been demonstrated and dominated by deep learning based solutions. In this article, for the first time, we provide a comprehensive literature review that helps readers better grasp the research trends and clearly understand the current advances. We investigate the related studies from the design aspects of network architectures, loss functions, benchmark datasets, and learning strategies with a proposal of a novel taxonomy that categorizes existing methods. Besides, we present a quantitative comparison of model performance on three widely used benchmarks, including indoor and outdoor datasets. Finally, we discuss the challenges of prior works and provide readers with some insights for future research directions.

Feature Pyramid Attention based Residual Neural Network for Environmental Sound Classification

Environmental sound classification (ESC) is a challenging problem due to the unstructured spatial-temporal relations that exist in the sound signals. Recently, many studies have focused on abstracting features from convolutional neural networks while the learning of semantically relevant frames of sound signals has been overlooked. To this end, we present an end-to-end framework, namely feature pyramid attention network (FPAM), focusing on abstracting the semantically relevant features for ESC. We first extract the feature maps of the preprocessed spectrogram of the sound waveform by a backbone network. Then, to build multi-scale hierarchical features of sound spectrograms, we construct a feature pyramid representation of the sound spectrograms by aggregating the feature maps from multi-scale layers, where the temporal frames and spatial locations of semantically relevant frames are localized by FPAM. Specifically, the multiple features are first processed by a dimension alignment module. Afterward, the pyramid spatial attention module (PSA) is attached to localize the important frequency regions spatially with a spatial attention module (SAM). Last, the processed feature maps are refined by a pyramid channel attention (PCA) to localize the important temporal frames. To justify the effectiveness of the proposed FPAM, visualization of attention maps on the spectrograms has been presented. The visualization results show that FPAM can focus more on the semantic relevant regions while neglecting the noises. The effectiveness of the proposed methods is validated on two widely used ESC datasets: the ESC-50 and ESC-10 datasets. The experimental results show that the FPAM yields comparable performance to state-of-the-art methods. A substantial performance increase has been achieved by FPAM compared with the baseline methods.

GlobalWoZ: Globalizing MultiWoZ to Develop Multilingual Task-Oriented Dialogue Systems

Much recent progress in task-oriented dialogue (ToD) systems has been driven by available annotation data across multiple domains for training. Over the last few years, there has been a move towards data curation for multilingual ToD systems that are applicable to serve people speaking different languages. However, existing multilingual ToD datasets either have a limited coverage of languages due to the high cost of data curation, or ignore the fact that dialogue entities barely exist in countries speaking these languages. To tackle these limitations, we introduce a novel data curation method that generates GlobalWoZ -- a large-scale multilingual ToD dataset globalized from an English ToD dataset for three unexplored use cases. Our method is based on translating dialogue templates and filling them with local entities in the target-language countries. We release our dataset as well as a set of strong baselines to encourage research on learning multilingual ToD systems for real use cases.

MIA 2022 Shared Task: Evaluating Cross-lingual Open-Retrieval Question Answering for 16 Diverse Languages

We present the results of the Workshop on Multilingual Information Access (MIA) 2022 Shared Task, evaluating cross-lingual open-retrieval question answering (QA) systems in 16 typologically diverse languages. In this task, we adapted two large-scale cross-lingual open-retrieval QA datasets in 14 typologically diverse languages, and newly annotated open-retrieval QA data in 2 underrepresented languages: Tagalog and Tamil. Four teams submitted their systems. The best system leveraging iteratively mined diverse negative examples and larger pretrained models achieves 32.2 F1, outperforming our baseline by 4.5 points. The second best system uses entity-aware contextualized representations for document retrieval, and achieves significant improvements in Tamil (20.8 F1), whereas most of the other systems yield nearly zero scores.

Semantic Histogram Based Graph Matching for Real-Time Multi-Robot Global Localization in Large Scale Environment

The core problem of visual multi-robot simultaneous localization and mapping (MR-SLAM) is how to efficiently and accurately perform multi-robot global localization (MR-GL). The difficulties are two-fold. The first is the difficulty of global localization for significant viewpoint difference. Appearance-based localization methods tend to fail under large viewpoint changes. Recently, semantic graphs have been utilized to overcome the viewpoint variation problem. However, the methods are highly time-consuming, especially in large-scale environments. This leads to the second difficulty, which is how to perform real-time global localization. In this paper, we propose a semantic histogram-based graph matching method that is robust to viewpoint variation and can achieve real-time global localization. Based on that, we develop a system that can accurately and efficiently perform MR-GL for both homogeneous and heterogeneous robots. The experimental results show that our approach is about 30 times faster than Random Walk based semantic descriptors. Moreover, it achieves an accuracy of 95% for global localization, while the accuracy of the state-of-the-art method is 85%.

Curved boundary conditions of the lattice Boltzmann method for simulating microgaseous flows in the slip flow regime

The lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) has shown its promising capability in simulating microscale gas flows. However, the suitable boundary condition is still one of the critical issues for the LBM to model microgaseous flows involving curved geometries. In this paper, a local boundary condition of the LBM is proposed to treat curved solid walls of microgaseous flows. The developed boundary treatment combines the Maxwellian diffuse reflection scheme and a single-node boundary scheme which contains a free parameter as well as the distance ratio. The curved boundary condition is analyzed within the multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) model for a unidirectional microflow. It is shown that the derived slip velocity depends on the free parameter as well as the distance ratio and relaxation times. By virtue of the free parameter, the combination parameter and the uniform relaxation time are theoretically determined to realize the accurate slip boundary condition. In addition, it is found that besides the halfway diffuse-bounce-back (DBB) scheme, previous curved boundary schemes only containing the distance ratio cannot ensure uniform relaxation times to realize the slip boundary condition. Some numerical examples with planar and curved boundaries are carried out to validate the present curved boundary scheme. The good and robust consistency of numerical predictions with analytical solutions demonstrates our theoretical analysis.

On Learning Language-Invariant Representations for Universal Machine Translation

The goal of universal machine translation is to learn to translate between any pair of languages, given a corpus of paired translated documents for \emph{a small subset} of all pairs of languages. Despite impressive empirical results and an increasing interest in massively multilingual models, theoretical analysis on translation errors made by such universal machine translation models is only nascent. In this paper, we formally prove certain impossibilities of this endeavour in general, as well as prove positive results in the presence of additional (but natural) structure of data. For the former, we derive a lower bound on the translation error in the many-to-many translation setting, which shows that any algorithm aiming to learn shared sentence representations among multiple language pairs has to make a large translation error on at least one of the translation tasks, if no assumption on the structure of the languages is made. For the latter, we show that if the paired documents in the corpus follow a natural \emph{encoder-decoder} generative process, we can expect a natural notion of ``generalization'': a linear number of language pairs, rather than quadratic, suffices to learn a good representation. Our theory also explains what kinds of connection graphs between pairs of languages are better suited: ones with longer paths result in worse sample complexity in terms of the total number of documents per language pair needed. We believe our theoretical insights and implications contribute to the future algorithmic design of universal machine translation.

TICO-19: the Translation Initiative for Covid-19

The COVID-19 pandemic is the worst pandemic to strike the world in over a century. Crucial to stemming the tide of the SARS-CoV-2 virus is communicating to vulnerable populations the means by which they can protect themselves. To this end, the collaborators forming the Translation Initiative for COvid-19 (TICO-19) have made test and development data available to AI and MT researchers in 35 different languages in order to foster the development of tools and resources for improving access to information about COVID-19 in these languages. In addition to 9 high-resourced, "pivot" languages, the team is targeting 26 lesser resourced languages, in particular languages of Africa, South Asia and South-East Asia, whose populations may be the most vulnerable to the spread of the virus. The same data is translated into all of the languages represented, meaning that testing or development can be done for any pairing of languages in the set. Further, the team is converting the test and development data into translation memories (TMXs) that can be used by localizers from and to any of the languages.

Unsupervised Multimodal Neural Machine Translation with Pseudo Visual Pivoting

Unsupervised machine translation (MT) has recently achieved impressive results with monolingual corpora only. However, it is still challenging to associate source-target sentences in the latent space. As people speak different languages biologically share similar visual systems, the potential of achieving better alignment through visual content is promising yet under-explored in unsupervised multimodal MT (MMT). In this paper, we investigate how to utilize visual content for disambiguation and promoting latent space alignment in unsupervised MMT. Our model employs multimodal back-translation and features pseudo visual pivoting in which we learn a shared multilingual visual-semantic embedding space and incorporate visually-pivoted captioning as additional weak supervision. The experimental results on the widely used Multi30K dataset show that the proposed model significantly improves over the state-of-the-art methods and generalizes well when the images are not available at the testing time.

What Makes A Good Story? Designing Composite Rewards for Visual Storytelling

Previous storytelling approaches mostly focused on optimizing traditional metrics such as BLEU, ROUGE and CIDEr. In this paper, we re-examine this problem from a different angle, by looking deep into what defines a realistically-natural and topically-coherent story. To this end, we propose three assessment criteria: relevance, coherence and expressiveness, which we observe through empirical analysis could constitute a "high-quality" story to the human eye. Following this quality guideline, we propose a reinforcement learning framework, ReCo-RL, with reward functions designed to capture the essence of these quality criteria. Experiments on the Visual Storytelling Dataset (VIST) with both automatic and human evaluations demonstrate that our ReCo-RL model achieves better performance than state-of-the-art baselines on both traditional metrics and the proposed new criteria.

XTREME: A Massively Multilingual Multi-task Benchmark for Evaluating Cross-lingual Generalization

Much recent progress in applications of machine learning models to NLP has been driven by benchmarks that evaluate models across a wide variety of tasks. However, these broad-coverage benchmarks have been mostly limited to English, and despite an increasing interest in multilingual models, a benchmark that enables the comprehensive evaluation of such methods on a diverse range of languages and tasks is still missing. To this end, we introduce the Cross-lingual TRansfer Evaluation of Multilingual Encoders XTREME benchmark, a multi-task benchmark for evaluating the cross-lingual generalization capabilities of multilingual representations across 40 languages and 9 tasks. We demonstrate that while models tested on English reach human performance on many tasks, there is still a sizable gap in the performance of cross-lingually transferred models, particularly on syntactic and sentence retrieval tasks. There is also a wide spread of results across languages. We release the benchmark to encourage research on cross-lingual learning methods that transfer linguistic knowledge across a diverse and representative set of languages and tasks.
