Image watermarking and fusion based on Fourier single-pixel imaging with weighed light source

In previous single-pixel imaging systems, the light source was generally idle with respect to time. Here, we propose a novel image fusion and visible watermarking scheme based on Fourier single-pixel imaging (FSPI) with a multiplexed time-varying (TV) signal, which is generated by the watermark pattern hidden in the light source. We call this scheme as TV-FSPI. With TV-FSPI, we can realize high-quality visible image watermarking, encrypted image watermarking and full-color visible image watermarking. We also discuss the extension to invisible watermarking based on TV-FSPI. Furthermore, we don't have to recode illumination patterns, because TV-FSPI can be extended to existing mainstream illumination patterns, such as random illumination mode and Hadamard illumination mode. Thus TV-FSPI has the potential to be used in single-pixel broadcasting system and multi-spectral single-pixel imaging system.

Selective distillation phenomenon in two-species Bose-Einstein condensates in open boundary optical lattices

We investigate the formation of discrete breathers (DBs) and the dynamics of the mixture of two-species Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in open boundary optical lattices using the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equations. The results show that the coupling of intra- and interspecies interaction can lead to the existence of pure single-species DBs and symbiotic DBs (i.e., two-species DBs). Furthermore, we find that there is a selective distillation phenomenon in the dynamics of the mixture of two-species BECs. One can selectively distil one species from the mixture of two-species BECs and can even control dominant species fraction by adjusting the intra- and interspecies interaction in optical lattices. Our selective distillation mechanism may find potential application in quantum information storage and quantum information processing based on multi-species atoms.

Anomalous conductivity tensor in the Dirac semimetal Na_3Bi

Na3Bi is a Dirac semimetal with protected nodes that may be sensitive to the breaking of time-reversal invariance in a magnetic field B. We report experiments which reveal that both the conductivity and resistivity tensors exhibit robust anomalies in B. The resistivity $ρ_{xx}$ is B-linear up to 35 T, while the Hall angle exhibits an unusual profile approaching a step-function. The conductivities $σ_{xx}$ and $σ_{xy}$ share identical power-law dependences at large B. We propose that these significant deviations from conventional transport result from an unusual sensitivity of the transport lifetime to B. Comparison with Cd3As2 is made.

Bulk crystal growth and electronic characterization of the 3D Dirac Semimetal Na3Bi

High quality hexagon plate-like Na3Bi crystals with large (001) plane surfaces were grown from a molten Na flux. The freshly cleaved crystals were analyzed by low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), allowing for the characterization of the three-dimensional (3D) Dirac semimetal (TDS) behavior and the observation of the topological surface states. Landau levels (LL) were observed, and the energy-momentum relations exhibited a linear dispersion relationship, characteristic of the 3D TDS nature of Na3Bi. In transport measurements on Na3Bi crystals the linear magnetoresistance and Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) quantum oscillations are observed for the first time.

Correlation of Crystal Quality and Extreme Magnetoresistance of WTe$_2$

High quality single crystals of WTe$_2$ were grown using a Te flux followed by a cleaning step involving self-vapor transport. The method is reproducible and yields consistently higher quality single crystals than are typically obtained via halide assisted vapor transport methods. Magnetoresistance (MR)values at 9 Tesla and 2 Kelvin as high as 1.75 million \%, nearly an order of magnitude higher than previously reported for this material, were obtained on crystals with residual resistivity ratio (RRR) of approximately 1250. The MR follows a near B$^2$ law (B = 1.95(1)) and, assuming a semiclassical model, the average carrier mobility for the highest quality crystal was found to be ~167,000 cm$^2$/Vs at 2 K. A correlation of RRR, MR ratio and average carrier mobility ($μ_{avg}$) is found with the cooling rate during the flux growth.

Signature of the chiral anomaly in a Dirac semimetal: a current plume steered by a magnetic field

In this talk, we describe recent experimental progress in detecting the chiral anomaly in the Dirac semimetal Na$_3$Bi in the presence of a magnetic field. The chiral anomaly, which plays a fundamental role in chiral gauge theories, was predicted to be observable in crystals by Nielsen and Ninomiya in 1983 [1]. Theoretical progress in identifying and investigating Dirac and Weyl semimetals has revived strong interest in this issue [2-6]. In the Dirac semimetal, the breaking of time-reversal symmetry by a magnetic field $\bf B$ splits each Dirac node into two chiral Weyl nodes. If an electric field $\bf E$ is applied parallel to $\bf B$, charge is predicted to flow between the Weyl nodes. We report the observation in the Dirac semimetal Na$_3$Bi of a novel, negative and highly anisotropic magnetoresistance (MR). We show that the enhanced conductivity has the form of a narrowly defined plume that can be steered by the applied field. The novel MR is acutely sensitive to deviations of $\bf B$ from $\bf E$, a feature incompatible with conventional transport. The locking of the current plume to the field appears to be a defining signature of the chiral anomaly.

Stability and phase transition of localized modes in Bose-Einstein condensates with both two- and three-body interactions

We investigate the stability and phase transition of localized modes in Bose-Einstein Condensates (BECs) in an optical lattice with the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger model by considering both two- and three-body interactions. We find that there are three types of localized modes, bright discrete breather (DB), discrete kink (DK), and multi-breather (MUB). Moreover, both two- and three-body on-site repulsive interactions can stabilize DB, while on-site attractive three-body interactions destabilize it. There is a critical value for the three-body interaction with which both DK and MUB become the most stable ones. We give analytically the energy thresholds for the destabilization of localized states and find that they are unstable (stable) when the total energy of the system is higher (lower) than the thresholds. The stability and dynamics characters of DB and MUB are general for extended lattice systems. Our result is useful for the blocking, filtering, and transfer of the norm in nonlinear lattices for BECs with both two- and three-body interactions.

Superconducting properties and electronic structure of NaBi

Resistivity, dc magnetization, and heat capacity measurements are reported for superconducting NaBi. Tc, the electronic contribution to the specific heat γ, the ΔCp/γTc ratio, and the Debye temperature are found to be 2.15 K, 3.4 mJmol-1K-2, 0.78, and 140 K respectively. The calculated electron-phonon coupling constant (λep = 0.62) implies that NaBi is a moderately coupled superconductor. The upper critical field and coherence length are found to be 250 Oe and 115 nm, respectively. Electronic structure calculations show NaBi to be a good metal, in agreement with the experiments; the px and py orbitals of Bi dominate the electronic states at the Fermi Energy.

Titanic Magnetoresistance in WTe2

Magnetoresistance is the change of a material's electrical resistance in response to an applied magnetic field. In addition to its intrinsic scientific interest, it is a technologically important property, placing it in "Pasteur's quadrant" of research value: materials with large magnetorsistance have found use as magnetic sensors 1, in magnetic memory 2, hard drives 3, transistors 4, and are the subject of frequent study in the field of spintronics 5, 6. Here we report the observation of an extremely large one-dimensional positive magnetoresistance (XMR) in the layered transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) WTe2; 452,700 percent at 4.5 Kelvin in a magnetic field of 14.7 Tesla, and 2.5 million percent at 0.4 Kelvin in 45 Tesla, with no saturation. The XMR is highly anisotropic, maximized in the crystallographic direction where small pockets of holes and electrons are found in the electronic structure. The determination of the origin of this effect and the fabrication of nanostructures and devices based on the XMR of WTe2 will represent a significant new direction in the study and uses of magnetoresistivity. *The published version of the paper includes co-authors Tian Liang and Max Hirschberger. **This paper has been published with new MR data to 60T where the MR of WTe2 reaches 13 million percent (at 0.5K) and still shows no signs of saturation. We also have new electron diffraction patterns to lower temperature (10K). We discuss the possible origin of the MR as coming from an electron-hole 'resonance' condition established by a perfect n/p ratio of 1 (more details in a new "extended data" section). This makes WTe2, possibly, the first realization of a perfectly balanced semimetal. ***The paper is published as "Large non-saturating magnetoresistance in WTe2" in Nature (2014), DOI:10.1038/nature13763

Evidence for massive bulk Dirac Fermions in Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$Se from Nernst and thermopower experiments

The lead chalcogenides (Pb,Sn)Te and (Pb,Sn)Se are the first examples of topological crystalline insulators (TCI) predicted \cite{Fu,Hsieh} (and confirmed \cite{Hasan,Story,Takahashi}) to display topological surface Dirac states (SDS) that are protected by mirror symmetry. A starting premise \cite{Hsieh} is that the SDS arise from bulk states describable as massive Dirac states \cite{Wallis,Svane}, but this assumption is untested. Here we show that the thermoelectric response of the bulk states display features specific to the Dirac spectrum. We show that, in the quantum limit, the lowest Landau Level (LL) is singly spin-degenerate, whereas higher levels are doubly degenerate. The abrupt change in spin degeneracy leads to a large step-decrease in the thermopower $S_{xx}$. In the lowest LL, $S_{xx}$ displays a striking linear increase vs. magnetic field. In addition, the Nernst signal undergoes an anomalous sign change when the bulk gap inverts at 180 K.

Experimental Observation of Quantum Holographic Imaging

We report the first experimental observation of quantum holographic imaging with entangled photon pairs, generated in a spontaneous parametric down-conversion process. The signal photons play both roles of "object wave" and "reference wave" in holography but are recorded by a point detector providing only encoding information, while the idler photons travel freely and are locally manipulated with spatial resolution. The holographic image is formed by the two-photon correlation measurement, although both the signal and idler beams are incoherent. According to the detection regime of the signal photons, we analyze three types of quantum holography schemes: point detection, coherent detection and bucket detection, which can correspond to classical holography using a point source, a plane-wave coherent source and a spatially incoherent source, respectively. Our experiment demonstrates that the two-photon holography in the point detection regime is equivalent to the one-photon holography using a point source. Physically, the quantum holography experiment verifies that a pair of non-commutable physical quantities, the amplitude and phase components of the field operator, can be nonlocally measured through two-photon entanglement.

Tuning the quantum oscillations of surface Dirac electrons in the topological insulator Bi$_2$Te$_2$Se by liquid gating

In Bi$_2$Te$_2$Se, the period of quantum oscillations arising from surface Dirac fermions can be increased 6-fold using ionic liquid gating. At large gate voltages, the Fermi energy reaches the $N$ = 1 Landau level in a 14-Tesla field. This enables the $\frac12$-shift predicted for the Dirac spectrum to be measured accurately. A surprising result is that liquid gating strongly enhances the surface mobility. By analyzing the Hall conductivity, we show that the enhancement occurs on only one surface. We present evidence that the gating process is fully reversible (hence consistent with band-bending by the $E$-field from the anion layer accumulated). In addition to the surface carriers, the experiment yields the mobility and density of the bulk carriers in the impurity band. By analyzing the charge accumulation vs. gate voltage, we also obtain estimates of the depletion width and the areal depletion capacitance $C_d/A$. The value of $C_d/A$ implies an enhanced electronic polarizability in the depletion region.

Global well-posedness in critical Besov spaces for two-fluid Euler-Maxwell equations

In this paper, we study the well-posedness in critical Besov spaces for two-fluid Euler-Maxwell equations, which is different from the one fluid case. We need to deal with the difficulties mainly caused by the nonlinear coupling and cancelation between two carriers. Precisely, we first obtain the local existence and blow-up criterion of classical solutions to the Cauchy problem and periodic problem pertaining to data in Besov spaces with critical regularity. Furthermore, we construct the global existence of classical solutions with aid of a different energy estimate (in comparison with the one-fluid case) provided the initial data is small under certain norms. Finally, we establish the large-time asymptotic behavior of global solutions near equilibrium in Besov spaces with relatively lower regularity.

High-Field Shubnikov-de Haas Oscillations in the Topological Insulator Bi$_2$Te$_2$Se

We report measurements of the surface Shubnikov de Haas oscillations (SdH) on crystals of the topological insulator Bi$_2$Te$_2$Se. In crystals with large bulk resistivity ($\sim$4 $Ω$cm at 4 K), we observe $\sim$15 surface SdH oscillations (to the $n$ = 1 Landau Level) in magnetic fields $B$ up to 45 Tesla. Extrapolating to the limit $1/B\to 0$, we confirm the $\frac12$-shift expected from a Dirac spectrum. The results are consistent with a very small surface Lande $g$-factor.

Two-Photon Airy Disk

We report an experimental observation of quantum Airy disk diffraction pattern using an entangled two-photon source. In contrast to the previous quantum lithography experiments where the subwavelength diffraction patterns were observed in the far field limit, we perform the Fraunhofer diffraction experiment with a convex lens. The experimental result shows that the two-photon Airy disk is provided with the super-resolution spot, which surpasses the classical diffraction limit. In particular, the spot size can be well controlled by the focal length, which adapted to optical super-focusing. Our experiment can promote potential application of quantum lithography.

Effect of hydrostatic pressure on transport in the topological insulator Bi$_2$Te$_2$Se

The Hall coefficient $R_H$ and resistivity $ρ$ of the topological insulator Bi$_2$Te$_2$Se display a number of puzzling features vs. temperature $T$. We propose a model that describes well the non-monotonic variation of $R_H(T)$. A key feature of the model is a chemical potential that is weakly $T$-dependent. From the fit to the model, we infer a "transport" gap $Δ_T$ of 50 mV. We find that hydrostatic pressure $P$ (0-27 kbar) has a pronounced effect on both $R_H$ and $ρ$. We show that these changes arise from decreases in both $Δ_T$ and the hole effective mass under pressure.

Low carrier concentration crystals of the topological insulator Bi$_2$Te$_2$Se

We report the characterization of Bi$_2$Te$_2$Se crystals obtained by the modified Bridgman and Bridgman-Stockbarger crystal growth techniques. X-ray diffraction study confirms an ordered Se-Te distribution in the inner and outer chalcogen layers, respectively, with a small amount of mixing. The crystals displaying high resistivity ($> 1 \mathrm{Ωcm}$) and low carrier concentration ($\sim 5\times 10^{16}$/cm$^3$) at 4 K were found in the central region of the long Bridgman-Stockbarger crystal, which we attribute to very small differences in defect density along the length of the crystal rod. Analysis of the temperature dependent resistivities and Hall coefficients reveals the possible underlying origins of the donors and acceptors in this phase.

Quantum Oscillations in a Topological Insulator Bi$_2$Te$_2$Se with Large Bulk Resistivity (6 $Ω$cm)

We report the observation of prominent Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in a Topological Insulator, Bi$_2$Te$_2$Se, with large bulk resistivity (6 $Ω$cm at 4 K). By fitting the SdH oscillations, we infer a large metallicity parameter $k_F\ell$ = 41, with a surface mobility ($μ_s\sim$ 2,800 cm$^2$/Vs) much larger than the bulk mobility ($μ_b\sim$ 50 cm$^2$/Vs). The plot of the index fields $B_ν$ vs. filling factor $ν$ shows a $\frac12$-shift, consistent with massless, Dirac states. Evidence for fractional-filling states is seen in an 11-T field.

Phase Reversal Diffraction in incoherent light

Phase reversal occurs in the propagation of an electromagnetic wave in a negatively refracting medium or a phase-conjugate interface. Here we report the experimental observation of phase reversal diffraction without the above devices. Our experimental results and theoretical analysis demonstrate that phase reversal diffraction can be formed through the first-order field correlation of chaotic light. The experimental realization is similar to phase reversal behavior in negatively refracting media.
