A bridge between Vector Bundle Theory and Nonlinear Spectral Theory

This paper establishes some hidden connections between the theory of generalized algebraic multiplicities, the intersection index of algebraic varieties, and the notion of orientability of vector bundles. The novel approach adopted in it facilitates the definition of several invariants closely related to the first Stiefel-Whitney fundamental class through some path integration techniques.

Rich dynamics in planar systems with heterogeneous nonnegative weights

This paper studies the global structure of the set of nodal solutions of a generalized Sturm--Liouville boundary value problem associated to the quasilinear equation $$ -(ϕ(u'))'= λu + a(t)g(u), \quad λ\in {\mathbb R}, $$ where $a(t)$ is non-negative with some positive humps separated away by intervals of degeneracy where $a\equiv 0$. When $ϕ(s)=s$ this equation includes a generalized prototype of a classical model going back to Moore and Nehari, 1959. This is the first paper where the general case when $λ\in\mathbb{R}$ has been addressed when $a\gneq 0$. The semilinear case with $a\lneq 0$ has been recently treated by López-Gómez and Rabinowitz.

Global bifurcation diagrams of positive solutions for a class of 1-D superlinear indefinite problems

This paper analyzes the structure of the set of positive solutions of a class of one-dimensional superlinear indefinite bvp's. It is a paradigm of how mathematical analysis aids the numerical study of a problem, whereas simultaneously its numerical study confirms and illuminates the analysis. On the analytical side, we establish the fast decay of the positive solutions as $λ\downarrow -\infty$ in the region where $a(x)<0$ (see (1.1)), as well as the decay of the solutions of the parabolic counterpart of the model (see (1.2)) as $λ\downarrow-\infty$ on any subinterval of $[0,1]$ where $u_0=0$, provided $u_0$ is a subsolution of (1.1). This result provides us with a proof of a conjecture of [28] under an additional condition of a dynamical nature. On the numerical side, this paper ascertains the global structure of the set of positive solutions on some paradigmatic prototypes whose intricate behavior is far from predictable from existing analytical results.

Nodal solutions of weighted indefinite problems

This paper analyzes the structure of the set of nodal solutions of a class of one-dimensional superlinear indefinite boundary values problems with an indefinite weight functions in front of the spectral parameter. Quite astonishingly, the associated high order eigenvalues might not be concave as it is the lowest one. As a consequence, in many circumstances the nodal solutions can bifurcate from three or even four bifurcation points from the trivial solution. This paper combines analytical and numerical tools. The analysis carried over on it is a paradigm of how mathematical analysis aids the numerical study of a problem, whereas simultaneously the numerical study confirms and illuminate the analysis.

General uniqueness results for large solutions

We give a series of very general sufficient conditions in order to ensure the uniqueness of large solutions for --$Δ$u + f (x, u) = 0 in a bounded domain $Ω$ where f : $Ω$ x R $\rightarrow$ R + is a continuous function, such that f (x, 0) = 0 for x $\in$ $Ω$, and f (x, r) > 0 for x in a neighborhood of $\partial$$Ω$ and all r > 0. 2010 Mathematics Subject Classification. 35 J 61; 31 B 15; 28 C 05 .

Multiplicity of subharmonics in a class of periodic predator-prey Volterra models

This paper ascertains the global topological structure of the set of subharmonics of arbitrary order of the periodic predator-prey model introduced in López-Gómez, Ortega and Tineo in 1996. By constructing the iterates of the monodromy operator of the system, it is shown that the system admits subharmonics of all orders for the appropriate ranges of values of the parameters. Then, some sharp results of topological nature in the context of global bifurcation theory provide us with the fine topological structure of the components of subharmonics emanating from the T-periodic coexistence state.
