A Maupertuis-type principle in relativistic mechanics and applications

We provide a Maupertuis-type principle for the following system of ODE, of interest in special relativity: ddt(mx˙1−∣x˙∣2/c2)=∇V(x),x∈Ω⊂Rn, \frac{\rm d}{{\rm d}t}\left(\frac{m\dot{x}}{\sqrt{1-|\dot{x}|^2/c^2}}\right)=\nabla V(x),\qquad x\inΩ\subset \mathbb{R}^n, where m,c>0m, c > 0 and V:Ω→RV: Ω\to \mathbb{R} is a function of class C1C^1. As an application, we prove the existence of multiple periodic solutions with prescribed energy for a relativistic NN-centre type problem in the plane.

Planar Hamiltonian systems: index theory and applications to the existence of subharmonics

We consider a planar Hamiltonian system of the type Jz′=∇zH(t,z)Jz' = \nabla_z H(t,z), where H:R×R2→RH: \mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{R}^2 \to \mathbb{R} is a function periodic in the time variable, such that ∇zH(t,0)≡0\nabla_z H(t,0) \equiv 0 and ∇zH(t,z)\nabla_z H(t,z) is asymptotically linear for ∣z∣→+∞\vert z \vert \to +\infty. After revisiting the index theory for linear planar Hamiltonian systems, by using the Poincaré-Birkhoff fixed point theorem we prove that the above nonlinear system has subharmonic solutions of any order kk large enough, whenever the rotation numbers (or, equivalently, the mean Conley-Zehnder indices) of the linearizations of the system at zero and at infinity are different. Applications are given to the case of planar Hamiltonian systems coming from second order scalar ODEs.

Rich dynamics in planar systems with heterogeneous nonnegative weights

This paper studies the global structure of the set of nodal solutions of a generalized Sturm--Liouville boundary value problem associated to the quasilinear equation −(ϕ(u′))′=λu+a(t)g(u),λ∈R, -(ϕ(u'))'= λu + a(t)g(u), \quad λ\in {\mathbb R}, where a(t)a(t) is non-negative with some positive humps separated away by intervals of degeneracy where a≡0a\equiv 0. When ϕ(s)=sϕ(s)=s this equation includes a generalized prototype of a classical model going back to Moore and Nehari, 1959. This is the first paper where the general case when λ∈Rλ\in\mathbb{R} has been addressed when a⪈0a\gneq 0. The semilinear case with a⪇0a\lneq 0 has been recently treated by López-Gómez and Rabinowitz.

Multiplicity of subharmonics in a class of periodic predator-prey Volterra models

This paper ascertains the global topological structure of the set of subharmonics of arbitrary order of the periodic predator-prey model introduced in López-Gómez, Ortega and Tineo in 1996. By constructing the iterates of the monodromy operator of the system, it is shown that the system admits subharmonics of all orders for the appropriate ranges of values of the parameters. Then, some sharp results of topological nature in the context of global bifurcation theory provide us with the fine topological structure of the components of subharmonics emanating from the T-periodic coexistence state.
