John-Nirenberg inequalities for parabolic BMO

We discuss a parabolic version of the space of functions of bounded mean oscillation related to a doubly nonlinear parabolic partial differential equation. Parabolic John-Nirenberg inequalities, which give exponential decay estimates for the oscillation of a function, are shown in the natural geometry of the partial differential equation. Chaining arguments are applied to change the time lag in the parabolic John-Nirenberg inequality. We also show that the quasihyperbolic boundary condition is a necessary and sufficient condition for a global parabolic John-Nirenberg inequality. Moreover, we consider John-Nirenberg inequalities with medians instead of integral averages and show that this approach gives the same class of functions as the original definition.

Parabolic Muckenhoupt Weights on Spaces of Homogeneous Type

This work discusses parabolic Muckenhoupt weights on spaces of homogeneous type, i.e.\ quasi-metric spaces with both a doubling measure and an additional monotone geodesic property. The main results include a characterization in terms of weighted norm inequalities for parabolic maximal operators, a reverse Hölder inequality, and a Jones-type factorization result for this class of weights. The connection between the space of parabolic bounded mean oscillation and parabolic Muckenhoupt weights is studied by applying a parabolic John--Nirenberg lemma. A Coifman--Rochberg-type characterization of the space of parabolic bounded mean oscillation in terms of parabolic maximal functions is also given. The main challenges in the parabolic theory are related to the time lag in the estimates. The results are motivated by the corresponding Euclidean theory and the regularity theory for parabolic variational problems on metric measure spaces.

Characterizations of weak reverse Hölder inequalities on metric measure spaces

We present ten different characterizations of functions satisfying a weak reverse Hölder inequality on an open subset of a metric measure space with a doubling measure. Among others, we describe these functions as a class of weak $A_\infty$ weights, which is a generalization of Muckenhoupt weights that allows for nondoubling weights. Although our main results are modeled after conditions that hold true for Muckenhoupt weights, we also discuss two conditions for Muckenhoupt $A_\infty$ weights that fail to hold for weak $A_\infty$ weights.

Lower semicontinuity and pointwise behavior of supersolutions for some doubly nonlinear nonlocal parabolic $p$-Laplace equations

We discuss pointwise behavior of weak supersolutions for a class of doubly nonlinear parabolic fractional $p$-Laplace equations which includes the fractional parabolic $p$-Laplace equation and the fractional porous medium equation. More precisely, we show that weak supersolutions have lower semicontinuous representative. We also prove that the semicontinuous representative at an instant of time is determined by the values at previous times. This gives a pointwise interpretation for a weak supersolution at every point. The corresponding results hold true also for weak subsolutions. Our results extend some recent results in the local parabolic case and in the nonlocal elliptic case to the nonlocal parabolic case. We prove the required energy estimates and measure theoretic De Giorgi type lemmas in the fractional setting.

Nonexistence of variational minimizers related to a quasilinear singular problem in metric measure spaces

In this article we consider a variational problem related to a quasilinear singular problem and obtain a nonexistence result in a metric measure space with a doubling measure and a Poincaré inequality. Our method is purely variational and to the best of our knowledge, this is the first work concerning singular problems in a general metric setting.

Parabolic weighted norm inequalities and partial differential equations

We investigate parabolic Muckenhoupt weights and functions of bounded mean oscillation (BMO) related to nonlinear parabolic partial differential equations. The main result gives a full characterization of weak and strong type weighted norm inequalities for parabolic forward in time maximal operators. In addition, we give a Jones type factorization result for the parabolic Muckenhoupt weights and a Coifman-Rochberg type characterization of the parabolic BMO from Moser's seminal paper through parabolic Muckenhoupt weights and maximal functions.

A characterization of BMO self-maps of a metric measure space

This paper studies functions of bounded mean oscillation (BMO) on metric spaces equipped with a doubling measure. The main result gives characterizations for mappings that preserve BMO. This extends the corresponding Euclidean results by Gotoh to metric measure spaces. The argument is based on a generalizations Uchiyama's construction of certain extremal BMO-functions and John-Nirenberg's lemma.

Relaxation and integral representation for functionals of linear growth on metric measure spaces

This article studies an integral representation of functionals of linear growth on metric measure spaces with a doubling measure and a Poincaré inequality. Such a functional is defined through relaxation, and it defines a Radon measure on the space. For the singular part of the functional, we get the expected integral representation with respect to the variation measure. A new feature is that in the representation for the absolutely continuous part, a constant appears already in the weighted Euclidean case. As an application we show that in a variational minimization problem related to the functional, boundary values can be presented as a penalty term.

Parabolic comparison principle and quasiminimizers in metric measure spaces

We give several characterizations of parabolic (quasisuper)- minimizers in a metric measure space equipped with a doubling measure and supporting a Poincaré inequality. We also prove a version of comparison principle for super- and subminimizers on parabolic space-time cylinders and a uniqueness result for minimizers of a boundary value problem. We also give an example showing that the corresponding results do not hold, in general, for quasiminimizers even in the Euclidean case.

Regularity of the local fractional maximal function

This paper studies smoothing properties of the local fractional maximal operator, which is defined in a proper subdomain of the Euclidean space. We prove new pointwise estimates for the weak gradient of the maximal function, which imply norm estimates in Sobolev spaces. An unexpected feature is that these estimates contain extra terms involving spherical and fractional maximal functions. Moreover, we construct several explicit examples which show that our results are essentially optimal. Extensions to metric measure spaces are also discussed.

Local approximation of superharmonic and superparabolic functions in nonlinear potential theory

We prove that arbitrary superharmonic functions and superparabolic functions related to the $p$-Laplace and the $p$-parabolic equations are locally obtained as limits of supersolutions with desired convergence properties of the corresponding Riesz measures. As an application we show that a family of uniformly bounded supersolutions to the $p$-parabolic equation contains a subsequence that converges to a supersolution.

Regularity of sets with quasiminimal boundary surfaces in metric spaces

This paper studies regularity of perimiter quasiminimizing sets in metric measure spaces with a doubling measure and a Poincare inequality. The main result shows that the measure theoretic boundary of a quasiminimizing set coincides with the topological boundary. We also show that such a set has finite Minkowski content and apply the regularity theory to study rectifiability issues related to quasiminimal sets in strong A_{\infty}-weighted Euclidean case.
