Blow-up phenomena in nonlocal eigenvalue problems: when theories of $L^1$ and $L^2$ meet

We develop a linear theory of very weak solutions for nonlocal eigenvalue problems $\mathcal L u = λu + f$ involving integro-differential operators posed in bounded domains with homogeneous Dirichlet exterior condition, with and without singular boundary data. We consider mild hypotheses on the Green's function and the standard eigenbasis of the operator. The main examples in mind are the fractional Laplacian operators. Without singular boundary datum and when $λ$ is not an eigenvalue of the operator, we construct an $L^2$-projected theory of solutions, which we extend to the optimal space of data for the operator $\mathcal L$. We present a Fredholm alternative as $λ$ tends to the eigenspace and characterise the possible blow-up limit. The main new ingredient is the transfer of orthogonality to the test function. We then extend the results to singular boundary data and study the so-called large solutions, which blow up at the boundary. For that problem we show that, for any regular value $λ$, there exist "large eigenfunctions" that are singular on the boundary and regular inside. We are also able to present a Fredholm alternative in this setting, as $λ$ approaches the values of the spectrum. We also obtain a maximum principle for weighted $L^1$ solutions when the operator is $L^2$-positive. It yields a global blow-up phenomenon as the first eigenvalue is approached from below. Finally, we recover the classical Dirichlet problem as the fractional exponent approaches one under mild assumptions on the Green's functions. Thus "large eigenfunctions" represent a purely nonlocal phenomenon.

Nonlinear aggregation-diffusion equations with Riesz potentials

We consider an aggregation-diffusion model, where the diffusion is nonlinear of porous medium type and the aggregation is governed by the Riesz potential of order s. The addition of a quadratic diffusion term produces a more precise competition with the aggregation term for small s, as they have the same scaling if s=0. We prove existence and uniqueness of stationary states and we characterize their asymptotic behavior as s goes to zero. Moreover, we prove existence of gradient flow solutions to the evolution problem by applying the JKO scheme.

The one-phase fractional Stefan problem

We study the existence and properties of solutions and free boundaries of the one-phase Stefan problem with fractional diffusion posed in $\mathbb{R}^N$. In terms of the enthalpy $h(x,t)$, the evolution equation reads $\partial_t h+(-Δ)^sΦ(h) =0$, while the temperature is defined as $u:=Φ(h):=\max\{h-L,0\}$ for some constant $L>0$ called the latent heat, and $(-Δ)^s$ stands for the fractional Laplacian with exponent $s\in(0,1)$. We prove the existence of a continuous and bounded selfsimilar solution of the form $h(x,t)=H(x\,t^{-1/(2s)})$ which exhibits a free boundary at the change-of-phase level $h(x,t)=L$. This level is located at the line (called the free boundary) $x(t)=ξ_0 t^{1/(2s)}$ for some $ξ_0>0$. The construction is done in 1D, and its extension to $N$-dimensional space is shown. We also provide well-posedness and basic properties of very weak solutions for general bounded data $h_0$ in several dimensions. The temperatures $u$ of these solutions are continuous functions that have finite speed of propagation, with possible free boundaries. We obtain estimates on the growth in time of the support of $u$ for solutions with compactly supported initial temperatures. Besides, we show the property of conservation of positivity for $u$ so that the support never recedes. On the contrary, the enthalpy $h$ has infinite speed of propagation and we obtain precise estimates on the tail. The limits $L\to0^+$, $L\to +\infty$, $s\to0^+$ and $s\to 1^-$ are also explored, and we find interesting connections with well-studied diffusion problems. Finally, we propose convergent monotone finite-difference schemes and include numerical experiments aimed at illustrating some of the obtained theoretical results, as well as other interesting phenomena.

Characterisation of homogeneous fractional Sobolev spaces

Our aim is to characterize the homogeneous fractional Sobolev-Slobodecki\uı spaces $\mathcal{D}^{s,p} (\mathbb{R}^n)$ and their embeddings, for $s \in (0,1]$ and $p\ge 1$. They are defined as the completion of the set of smooth and compactly supported test functions with respect to the Gagliardo-Slobodecki\uı seminorms. For $s\,p < n$ or $s = p = n = 1$ we show that $\mathcal{D}^{s,p}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ is isomorphic to a suitable function space, whereas for $s\,p \ge n$ it is isomorphic to a space of equivalence classes of functions, differing by an additive constant. As one of our main tools, we present a Morrey-Campanato inequality where the Gagliardo-Slobodecki\uı seminorm controls from above a suitable Campanato seminorm.

The fractional p-Laplacian evolution equation in $\mathbb{R}^N$ in the sublinear case

We consider the natural time-dependent fractional $p$-Laplacian equation posed in the whole Euclidean space, with parameter $1<p<2$ and fractional exponent $s\in (0,1)$. Rather standard theory shows that the Cauchy Problem for data in the Lebesgue $L^q$ spaces is well posed, and the solutions form a family of non-expansive semigroups with regularity and other interesting properties. The superlinear case $p>2$ has been dealt with in a recent paper. We study here the "fast" regime $1<p<2$ which is more complex. As main results, we construct the self-similar fundamental solution for every mass value $M$ and any $p$ in the subrange $p_c=2N/(N+s)<p<2$, and we show that this is the precise range where they can exist. We also prove that general finite-mass solutions converge towards the fundamental solution having the same mass, and convergence holds in all $L^q$ spaces. Fine bounds in the form of global Harnack inequalities are obtained. Another main topic of the paper is the study of solutions having strong singularities. We find a type of singular solution called Very Singular Solution that exists for $p_c<p<p_1$, where $p_1$ is a new critical number that we introduce, $p_1\in (p_c,2)$. We extend this type of singular solutions to the "very fast range" $1<p<p_c$. They represent examples of weak solutions having finite-time extinction in that lower $p$ range. We briefly examine the situation in the limit case $p=p_c$. Finally, very singular solutions are related to fractional elliptic problems of nonlinear eigenvalue form.in the limit case $p=p_c$. Finally, very singular solutions are related to fractional elliptic problems of nonlinear eigenvalue form.

Vortex formation for a non-local interaction model with Newtonian repulsion and superlinear mobility

We consider density solutions for gradient flow equations of the form $u_t = \nabla \cdot ( γ(u) \nabla \mathrm N(u))$, where $\mathrm N$ is the Newtonian repulsive potential in the whole space $\mathbb R^d$ with the nonlinear convex mobility $γ(u)=u^α$, and $α>1$. We show that solutions corresponding to compactly supported initial data remain compactly supported for all times leading to moving free boundaries as in the linear mobility case $γ(u)=u$. For linear mobility it was shown that there is a special solution in the form of a disk vortex of constant intensity in space $u=c_1t^{-1}$ supported in a ball that spreads in time like $c_2t^{1/d}$, thus showing a discontinuous leading front or shock. Our present results are in sharp contrast with the case of concave mobilities of the form $γ(u)=u^α$, with $0<α<1$ studied in [9]. There, we developed a well-posedness theory of viscosity solutions that are positive everywhere and moreover display a fat tail at infinity. Here, we also develop a well-posedness theory of viscosity solutions that in the radial case leads to a very detail analysis allowing us to show a waiting time phenomena. This is a typical behavior for nonlinear degenerate diffusion equations such as the porous medium equation. We will also construct explicit self-similar solutions exhibiting similar vortex-like behaviour characterizing the long time asymptotics of general radial solutions under certain assumptions. Convergent numerical schemes based on the viscosity solution theory are proposed analysing their rate of convergence. We complement our analytical results with numerical simulations ilustrating the proven results and showcasing some open problems.

Estimates on translations and Taylor expansions in fractional Sobolev spaces

In this paper we study how the (normalised) Gagliardo semi-norms $[u]_{W^{s,p} (\mathbb{R}^n)}$ control translations. In particular, we prove that $\| u(\cdot + y) - u \|_{L^p (\mathbb{R}^n)} \le C [ u ] _{W^{s,p} (\mathbb{R}^n)} |y|^s$ for $n\geq1$, $s \in [0,1]$ and $p \in [1,+\infty]$, where $C$ depends only on $n$. We then obtain a corresponding higher-order version of this result: we get fractional rates of the error term in the Taylor expansion. We also present relevant implications of our two results. First, we obtain a direct proof of several compact embedding of $W^{s,p}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ where the Fréchet-Kolmogorov Theorem is applied with known rates. We also derive fractional rates of convergence of the convolution of a function with suitable mollifiers. Thirdly, we obtain fractional rates of convergence of finite-difference discretizations for $W^{s,p} (\mathbb{R}^n))$.

On a fractional thin film equation

This paper deals with a nonlinear degenerate parabolic equation of order $α$ between 2 and 4 which is a kind of fractional version of the Thin Film Equation. Actually, this one corresponds to the limit value $α=4$ while the Porous Medium Equation is the limit $α=2$. We prove existence of a nonnegative weak solution for a general class of initial data, and establish its main properties. We also construct the special solutions in self-similar form which turn out to be explicit and compactly supported. As in the porous medium case, they are supposed to give the long time behaviour or the wide class of solutions. This last result is proved to be true under some assumptions. Lastly, we consider nonlocal equations with the same nonlinear structure but with order from 4 to 6. For these equations we construct self-similar solutions that are positive and compactly supported, thus contributing to the higher order theory.

On the two-phase fractional Stefan problem

The classical Stefan problem is one of the most studied free boundary problems of evolution type. Recently, there has been interest in treating the corresponding free boundary problem with nonlocal diffusion. We start the paper by reviewing the main properties of the classical problem that are of interest for us. Then we introduce the fractional Stefan problem and develop the basic theory. After that we center our attention on selfsimilar solutions, their properties and consequences. We first discuss the results of the one-phase fractional Stefan problem which have recently been studied by the authors. Finally, we address the theory of the two-phase fractional Stefan problem which contains the main original contributions of this paper. Rigorous numerical studies support our results and claims.

Separatrices in the Hamilton-Jacobi Formalism of Inflaton Models

We consider separatrix solutions of the differential equations for inflaton models with a single scalar field in a zero-curvature Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker universe. The existence and properties of separatrices are investigated in the framework of the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism, where the main quantity is the Hubble parameter considered as a function of the inflaton field. A wide class of inflaton models that have separatrix solutions (and include many of the most physically relevant potentials) is introduced, and the properties of the corresponding separatrices are investigated, in particular, asymptotic inflationary stages, leading approximations to the separatrices, and full asymptotic expansions thereof. We also prove an optimal growth criterion for potentials that do not have separatrices.

Singular solutions for fractional parabolic boundary value problems

The standard problem for the classical heat equation posed in a bounded domain $Ω$ of $\mathbb R^n$ is the initial and boundary value problem. If the Laplace operator is replaced by a version of the fractional Laplacian, the initial and boundary value problem can still be solved on the condition that the non-zero boundary data must be singular, i.e., the solution $u(t,x)$ blows up as $x$ approaches $\partial Ω$ in a definite way. In this paper we construct a theory of existence and uniqueness of solutions of the parabolic problem with singular data taken in a very precise sense, and also admitting initial data and a forcing term. When the boundary data are zero we recover the standard fractional heat semigroup. A general class of integro-differential operators may replace the classical fractional Laplacian operators, thus enlarging the scope of the work. As further results on the spectral theory of the fractional heat semigroup, we show that a one-sided Weyl-type law holds in the general class, which was previously known for the restricted and spectral fractional Laplacians, but is new for the censored (or regional) fractional Laplacian. This yields bounds on the fractional heat kernel.

The evolution fractional p-Laplacian equation in $\mathbb{R}^N$. Fundamental solution and asymptotic behaviour

We consider the natural time-dependent fractional $p$-Laplacian equation posed in the whole Euclidean space, with parameters $p>2$ and $s\in (0,1)$ (fractional exponent). We show that the Cauchy Problem for data in the Lebesgue $L^q$ spaces is well posed, and show that the solutions form a family of non-expansive semigroups with regularity and other interesting properties. As main results, we construct the self-similar fundamental solution for every mass value $M,$ and prove that general finite-mass solutions converge towards that fundamental solution having the same mass in all $L^q$ spaces.A number of additional properties and estimates complete the picture.

The fractional Schrödinger equation with general nonnegative potentials. The weighted space approach

We study the Dirichlet problem for the stationary Schrödinger fractional Laplacian equation $(-Δ)^s u + V u = f$ posed in bounded domain $ Ω\subset \mathbb R^n$ with zero outside conditions. We consider general nonnegative potentials $V\in L^1_{loc}(Ω)$ and prove well-posedness of very weak solutions when the data are chosen in an optimal class of weighted integrable functions $f$. Important properties of the solutions, such as its boundary behaviour, are derived. The case of super singular potentials that blow up near the boundary is given special consideration. Related literature is commented.

The Fisher-KPP problem with doubly nonlinear diffusion

The famous Fisher-KPP reaction-diffusion model combines linear diffusion with the typical KPP reaction term, and appears in a number of relevant applications in biology and chemistry. It is remarkable as a mathematical model since it possesses a family of travelling waves that describe the asymptotic behaviour of a large class solutions $0\le u(x,t)\le 1$ of the problem posed in the real line. The existence of propagation waves with finite speed has been confirmed in some related models and disproved in others. We investigate here the corresponding theory when the linear diffusion is replaced by the "slow" doubly nonlinear diffusion and we find travelling waves that represent the wave propagation of more general solutions even when we extend the study to several space dimensions. A similar study is performed in the critical case that we call "pseudo-linear", i.e., when the operator is still nonlinear but has homogeneity one. With respect to the classical model and the "pseudo-linear" case, the "slow" travelling waves exhibit free boundaries.

The porous medium equation on Riemannian manifolds with negative curvature. The large-time behaviour

We consider nonnegative solutions of the porous medium equation (PME) on a Cartan-Hadamard manifold whose negative curvature can be unbounded. We take compactly supported initial data because we are also interested in free boundaries. We classify the geometrical cases we study into quasi-hyperbolic, quasi-Euclidean and critical cases, depending on the growth rate of the curvature at infinity. We prove sharp upper and lower bounds on the long-time behaviour of the solutions in terms of corresponding bounds on the curvature. In particular we obtain a sharp form of the smoothing effect on such manifolds. We also estimate the location of the free boundary. A global Harnack principle follows. We also present a change of variables that allows to transform radially symmetric solutions of the PME on model manifolds into radially symmetric solutions of a corresponding weighted PME on Euclidean space and back. This equivalence turns out to be an important tool of the theory.

Finite and infinite speed of propagation for porous medium equations with nonlocal pressure

We study a porous medium equation with fractional potential pressure: $$ \partial_t u= \nabla \cdot (u^{m-1} \nabla p), \quad p=(-Δ)^{-s}u, $$ for $m>1$, $0<s<1$ and $u(x,t)\ge 0$. The problem is posed for $x\in \mathbb{R}^N$, $N\geq 1$, and $t>0$. The initial data $u(x,0)$ is assumed to be a bounded function with compact support or fast decay at infinity. We establish existence of a class of weak solutions for which we determine whether the property of compact support is conserved in time depending on the parameter $m$, starting from the result of finite propagation known for $m=2$. We find that when $m\in [1,2)$ the problem has infinite speed of propagation, while for $m\in [2,3)$ it has finite speed of propagation. In other words $m=2$ is critical exponent regarding propagation.

Fractional Nonlinear Degenerate Diffusion Equations on Bounded Domains Part I. Existence, Uniqueness and Upper Bounds

We investigate quantitative properties of nonnegative solutions $u(t,x)\ge 0$ to the nonlinear fractional diffusion equation, $\partial_t u + \mathcal{L}F(u)=0$ posed in a bounded domain, $x\inΩ\subset \mathbb{R}^N$, with appropriate homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. As $\mathcal{L}$ we can use a quite general class of linear operators that includes the two most common versions of the fractional Laplacian $(-Δ)^s$, $0<s<1$, in a bounded domain with zero Dirichlet boundary conditions, but it also includes many other examples since our theory only needs some basic properties that are typical of "linear heat semigroups." The nonlinearity $F$ is assumed to be increasing and is allowed to be degenerate, the prototype is the power case $F(u)=|u|^{m-1}u$, with $m>1$. In this paper we propose a suitable class of solutions of the equation, and cover the basic theory: we prove existence, uniqueness of such solutions, and we establish upper bounds of two forms (absolute bounds and smoothing effects), as well as weighted-$L^1$ estimates. The class of solutions is very well suited for that work. The standard Laplacian case $s=1$ is included and the linear case $m=1$ can be recovered in the limit. In a companion paper [12], we will complete the study with more advanced estimates, like the upper and lower boundary behaviour and Harnack inequalities, for which the results of this paper are needed.

The Dirichlet Problem for the fractional p-Laplacian evolution equation

We consider a model of fractional diffusion involving the natural nonlocal version of the $p$-Laplacian operator. We study the Dirichlet problem posed in a bounded domain $Ω$ of ${\mathbb{R}}^N$ with zero data outside of $Ω$, for which the existence and uniqueness of strong nonnegative solutions is proved, and a number of quantitative properties are established. A main objective is proving the existence of a special separate variable solution $U(x,t)=t^{-1/(p-2)}F(x)$, called the friendly giant, which produces a universal upper bound and explains the large-time behaviour of all nontrivial nonnegative solutions in a sharp way. Moreover, the spatial profile $F$ of this solution solves an interesting nonlocal elliptic problem. We also prove everywhere positivity of nonnegative solutions with any nontrivial data, a property that separates this equation from the standard $p$-Laplacian equation.

Recent progress in the theory of Nonlinear Diffusion with Fractional Laplacian Operators

We report on recent progress in the study of nonlinear diffusion equations involving nonlocal, long-range diffusion effects. Our main concern is the so-called fractional porous medium equation, $\partial_t u +(-Δ)^{s}(u^m)=0$, and some of its generalizations. Contrary to usual porous medium flows, the fractional version has infinite speed of propagation for all exponents $0<s<1$ and $m>0$; on the other hand, it also generates an $L^1$-contraction semigroup which depends continuously on the exponent of fractional differentiation and the exponent of the nonlinearity. After establishing the general existence and uniqueness theory, the main properties are described: positivity, regularity, continuous dependence, a priori estimates, Schwarz symmetrization, among others. Self-similar solutions are constructed (fractional Barenblatt solutions) and they explain the asymptotic behaviour of a large class of solutions. In the fast diffusion range we study extinction in finite time and we find suitable special solutions. We discuss KPP type propagation. We also examine some related equations that extend the model and briefly comment on current work.

Regularity of solutions of the fractional porous medium flow with exponent 1/2

We study the regularity of a porous medium equation with nonlocal diffusion effects given by an inverse fractional Laplacian operator. The precise model is $u_t=\nabla\cdot(u\nabla (-Δ)^{-1/2}u).$ For definiteness, the problem is posed in $\{x\in\mathbb{R}^N, t\in \mathbb{R}\}$ with nonnegative initial data $u(x,0)$ that are integrable and decay at infinity. Previous papers have established the existence of mass-preserving, nonnegative weak solutions satisfying energy estimates and finite propagation, as well as the boundedness of nonnegative solutions with $L^1$ data, for the more general family of equations $u_t=\nabla\cdot(u\nabla (-Δ)^{-s}u)$, $0<s<1$. Here we establish the $C^α$ regularity of such weak solutions in the difficult fractional exponent case $s=1/2$. For the other fractional exponents $s\in (0,1)$ this Hölder regularity has been proved in $[5]$. The method combines delicate De Giorgi type estimates with iterated geometric corrections that are needed to avoid the divergence of some essential energy integrals due to fractional long-range effects.

The Mesa Problem for the Fractional Porous Medium Equation

We investigate the behaviour of the solutions $u_m(x,t)$ of the fractional porous medium equation $$ u_t+(-Δ)^s (u^m)=0, \quad x\in {\mathbb{R}}^N, \ t>0. $$ with initial data $u(x,0)\ge 0$, $x\in {\mathbb{R}}^N$, in the limit as $m\to\infty$ with fixed $s\in (0,1)$. We first identify the limit of the Barenblatt solutions as the solution of a fractional obstacle problem, and we observe that, contrary to the case $s=1$, the limit is not compactly supported but exhibits a typical fractional tail with power-like decay. In other words, we do not get a plain mesa in the limit, but a mesa with tails. We then study the limit for a class of nonnegative initial data and derive counterexamples to expected propagation and comparison properties based on symmetrization.

Transformations of Self-Similar Solutions for porous medium equations of fractional type

We consider four different models of nonlinear diffusion equations involving fractional Laplacians and study the existence and properties of classes of self-similar solutions. Such solutions are an important tool in developing the general theory. We introduce a number of transformations that allow us to map complete classes of solutions of one equation into those of another one, thus providing us with a number of new solutions, as well as interesting connections. Special attention is paid to the property of finite propagation.

A Priori Estimates for Fractional Nonlinear Degenerate Diffusion Equations on bounded domains

We investigate quantitative properties of the nonnegative solutions $u(t,x)\ge 0$ to the nonlinear fractional diffusion equation, $\partial_t u + {\mathcal L} (u^m)=0$, posed in a bounded domain, $x\inΩ\subset {\mathbb R}^N$ with $m>1$ for $t>0$. As ${\mathcal L}$ we use one of the most common definitions of the fractional Laplacian $(-Δ)^s$, $0<s<1$, in a bounded domain with zero Dirichlet boundary conditions. We consider a general class of very weak solutions of the equation, and obtain a priori estimates in the form of smoothing effects, absolute upper bounds, lower bounds, and Harnack inequalities. We also investigate the boundary behaviour and we obtain sharp estimates from above and below. The standard Laplacian case $s=1$ or the linear case $m=1$ are recovered as limits. The method is quite general, suitable to be applied to a number of similar problems.

Classical solutions and higher regularity for nonlinear fractional diffusion equations

We study the regularity properties of the solutions to the nonlinear equation with fractional diffusion $$ \partial_tu+(-Δ)^{σ/2}φ(u)=0, $$ posed for $x\in \mathbb{R}^N$, $t>0$, with $0<σ<2$, $N\ge1$. If the nonlinearity satisfies some not very restrictive conditions: $φ\in C^{1,γ}(\mathbb{R})$, $1+γ>σ$, and $φ'(u)>0$ for every $u\in\mathbb{R}$, we prove that bounded weak solutions are classical solutions for all positive times. We also explore sufficient conditions on the non-linearity to obtain higher regularity for the solutions, even $C^\infty$ regularity. Degenerate and singular cases, including the power nonlinearity $φ(u)=|u|^{m-1}u$, $m>0$, are also considered, and the existence of classical solutions in the power case is proved.

Finite and infinite speed of propagation for porous medium equations with fractional pressure

We study a porous medium equation with fractional potential pressure: $$ \partial_t u= \nabla \cdot (u^{m-1} \nabla p), \quad p=(-Δ)^{-s}u, $$ for $m>1$, $0<s<1$ and $u(x,t)\ge 0$. To be specific, the problem is posed for $x\in \mathbb{R}^N$, $N\geq 1$, and $t>0$. The initial data $u(x,0)$ is assumed to be a bounded function with compact support or fast decay at infinity. We establish existence of a class of weak solutions for which we determine whether, depending on the parameter $m$, the property of compact support is conserved in time or not, starting from the result of finite propagation known for $m=2$. We find that when $m\in [1,2)$ the problem has infinite speed of propagation, while for $m\in [2,\infty)$ it has finite speed of propagation. Comparison is made with other nonlinear diffusion models where the results are widely different.

We prove existence and uniqueness of the solution of the numerical method and also the convergence to the theoretical solution of the equation with an order depending on $σ$. We also propose a two points approximation to a $σ$-derivative with order $O(h^{2-σ})$.

Optimal estimates for Fractional Fast diffusion equations

We obtain a priori estimates with best constants for the solutions of the fractional fast diffusion equation $u_t+(-Δ)^{σ/2}u^m=0$, posed in the whole space with $0<σ<2$, $0<m\le 1$. The estimates are expressed in terms of convenient norms of the initial data, the preferred norms being the $L^1$-norm and the Marcinkiewicz norm. The estimates contain exact exponents and best constants. We also obtain optimal estimates for the extinction time of the solutions in the range $m$ near 0 where solutions may vanish completely in finite time. Actually, our results apply to equations with a more general nonlinearity. Our main tools are symmetrization techniques and comparison of concentrations. Classical results for $σ=2$ are recovered in the limit.

Symmetrization for Linear and Nonlinear Fractional Parabolic Equations of Porous Medium Type

We establish symmetrization results for the solutions of the linear fractional diffusion equation $\partial_t u +(-Δ)^{σ/2}u=f$ and itselliptic counterpart $h v +(-Δ)^{σ/2}v=f$, $h>0$, using the concept of comparison of concentrations. The results extend to the nonlinear version, $\partial_t u+(-Δ)^{σ/2}A(u)=f$, but only when $A:\re_+\to\re_+$ is a concave function. In the elliptic case, complete symmetrization results are proved for $\,B(v)+(-Δ)^{σ/2}v=f$ \ when $B(v)$ is a convex nonnegative function for $v>0$ with $B(0)=0$, and partial results when $B$ is concave. Remarkable counterexamples are constructed for the parabolic equation when $A$ is convex, resp. for the elliptic equation when $B$ is concave. Such counterexamples do not exist in the standard diffusion case $σ=2$.

The Fisher-KPP equation with nonlinear fractional diffusion

We study the propagation properties of nonnegative and bounded solutions of the class of reaction-diffusion equations with nonlinear fractional diffusion: $u_{t} + (-Δ)^s (u^m)=f(u)$. For all $0<s<1$ and $m> m_c=(N-2s)_+/N $, we consider the solution of the initial-value problem with initial data having fast decay at infinity and prove that its level sets propagate exponentially fast in time, in contradiction to the traveling wave behaviour of the standard KPP case, which corresponds to putting $s=1$, $m=1$ and $f(u)=u(1-u)$. The proof of this fact uses as an essential ingredient the recently established decay properties of the self-similar solutions of the purely diffusive equation, $u_{t} + (-Δ)^s u^m=0$.

The Hele-Shaw asymptotics for mechanical models of tumor growth

Models of tumor growth, now commonly used, present several levels of complexity, both in terms of the biomedical ingredients and the mathematical description. The simplest ones contain competition for space using purely fluid mechanical concepts. Another possible ingredient is the supply of nutrients through vasculature. The models can describe the tissue either at the level of cell densities, or at the scale of the solid tumor, in this latter case by means of a free boundary problem. Our first goal here is to formulate a free boundary model of Hele-Shaw type, a variant including growth terms, starting from the description at the cell level and passing to a certain limit. A detailed mathematical analysis of this purely mechanical model is performed. Indeed, we are able to prove strong convergence in passing to the limit, with various uniform gradient estimates; we also prove uniqueness for the asymptotic Hele-Shaw type problem. The main tools are nonlinear regularizing effects for certain porous medium type equations, regularization techniques à la Steklov, and a Hilbert duality method for uniqueness. At variance with the classical Hele-Shaw problem, here the geometric motion governed by the pressure is not sufficient to completely describe the dynamics. A complete description requires the equation on the cell number density. Using this theory as a basis, we go on to consider the more complex model including nutrients. We obtain the equation for the limit of the coupled system; the method relies on some BV bounds and space/time a priori estimates. Here, new technical difficulties appear, and they reduce the generality of the results in terms of the initial data. Finally, we prove uniqueness for the system, a main mathematical difficulty.

The solutions are shown to become bounded and $C^\infty$ smooth in $(x,t)$ for all positive times. A general fractional porous medium equation

We develop a theory of existence and uniqueness for the following porous medium equation with fractional diffusion, $$ \{ll} \dfrac{\partial u}{\partial t} + (-Δ)^{σ/2} (|u|^{m-1}u)=0, & \qquad x\in\mathbb{R}^N,\; t>0, [8pt] u(x,0) = f(x), & \qquad x\in\mathbb{R}^N.%. $$ We consider data $f\in L^1(\mathbb{R}^N)$ and all exponents $0<σ<2$ and $m>0$. Existence and uniqueness of a weak solution is established for $m> m_*=(N-σ)_+ /N$, giving rise to an $L^1$-contraction semigroup. In addition, we obtain the main qualitative properties of these solutions. In the lower range $0<m\le m_*$ existence and uniqueness of solutions with good properties happen under some restrictions, and the properties are different from the case above $m_*$. We also study the dependence of solutions on $f,m$ and $σ$. Moreover, we consider the above questions for the problem posed in a bounded domain.

Classification of radial solutions to the Emden-Fowler equation on the hyperbolic space

We study the Emden-Fowler equation $-Δu=|u|^{p-1}u$ on the hyperbolic space ${\mathbb H}^n$. We are interested in radial solutions, namely solutions depending only on the geodesic distance from a given point. The critical exponent for such equation is $p=(n+2)/(n-2)$ as in the Euclidean setting, but the properties of the solutions show striking differences with the Euclidean case. While the papers \cite{mancini, bhakta} consider finite energy solutions, we shall deal here with infinite energy solutions and we determine the exact asymptotic behavior of wide classes of finite and infinite energy solutions.

Asymptotic Behaviour of a Nonlinear Parabolic Equation with Gradient Absorption and Critical Exponent

We study the large-time behaviour of the solutions of the evolution equation involving nonlinear diffusion and gradient absorption, $$ \partial_t u - Δ_p u + |\nabla u|^q=0 . $$ We consider the problem posed for $x\in \real^N$ and t>0 with nonnegative and compactly supported initial data. We take the exponent p>2 which corresponds to slow p-Laplacian diffusion. The main feature of the paper is that the exponent q takes the critical value q=p-1 which leads to interesting asymptotics. This is due to the fact that in this case both the Hamilton-Jacobi term $ |\nabla u|^q$ and the diffusive term $Δ_p u$ have a similar size for large times. The study performed in this paper shows that a delicate asymptotic equilibrium happens, so that the large-time behaviour of the solutions is described by a rescaled version of a suitable self-similar solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation $|\nabla W|^{p-1}=W$, with logarithmic time corrections. The asymptotic rescaled profile is a kind of sandpile with a cusp on top, and it is independent of the space dimension.

Degenerate homogeneous parabolic equations associated with the infinity-Laplacian

We prove existence and uniqueness of viscosity solutions to the degenerate parabolic problem $u_t = Δ_\infty^h u$ where $Δ_\infty^h$ is the $h$-homogeneous operator associated with the infinity-Laplacian, $Δ_\infty^h u = |Du|^{h-3} < D^2uDu,Du>$. We also derive the asymptotic behavior of $u$ for the problem posed in the whole space and for the Dirichlet problem with zero boundary conditions.
